I Go, We Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 24, 2018

Well, if my first game of the year had to be a non-Bum start I am perfectly fine with it being a Baby Pudge start. I am still obsessing on why the Twins just gave up on this guy. It’s not like they (or any team) is so stocked with young pitching they can just cast off a dude with such limited experience, obvious potential and hall of fame lineage. So I will inspect him closely in between my knowing dude head nods this afternoon.

The Giants usually rake when I attend so this one is in the bag….

(Mac bomb also in the bag in El Paso at Raley Field today)

And……I’m calling a foul ball for me. Why not? Some day that has to happen and we’ve got the seats for plenty of opportunities. So my advice to anyone sitting near me: Practice your duck and cover routine now. There will be an unannounced stop by the Big Flavor train in your row at some point today….

Hey Flav have fun. Should be warm day there too (not as hot as yesterday when it was 95 here) so surprised lack of bombs yesterday.
congrats on that FD play, second out of 30K is amazing.

  2. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 9:32 am

Oh Bochy says Pence in LF today no Slater. Also appears Hanson will get more run out there vs. RHP.
Last time I looked he was around .300 batting LH, .200 RH.

Nice to see Giants SPs steadily lowering ERA, at least at home.
smrdz supposed to throw 90 pitches in next start for Sac on Tuesday.
Cueto gave up only 1 IF hit no walks 4 Ks 48 pitches in 3 and a third. Supposed to make couple more starts.

so Flav might see DRod last start for big club for awhile.

    • snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 11:54 am

I hope they haven’t called Slater up so he can twiddle his thumbs…

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:07 pm

Yeah no kidding, snarkk. Maybe he can sit on the bench and get inconsistent reps until his swing and timing are off and get swapped for Williamson in a month.

      • alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:35 pm

Slater will be the bongô head replacement guy for Pence instead of Gary Brown!!
Boch is still clueless about Pence and his non skills.,

      • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:38 pm

he can’t be 5th OF, no way. Maybe he gets some starts in CF. Longo still long way off too and Panik is hitting .247. Gotta other places to slide Hanson in the LU.

Incredible day up here. SF amazing when the sun shines.

  4. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:06 pm

At the game on wed I came as close as I ever have to getting a foul ball. Two within 15 to my left that ricocheted off of a wheel chair bound fan. One three seats to my right that bounced off of an old timers hip. Just didn’t feel right about getting into the scrums for those balls. Good luck, Flavor.

  5. Flavor said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:31 pm

Sect 218 on the aisle. This is in the bag. They should just give me a ball now and save those around me

  6. Macdog said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:36 pm

Dodgers have hit 6 home runs today.

  7. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2018 at 12:44 pm

Speaking of wheel chair fans,I had a beat right on a Barry Bonds GW HR in the bleachers years ago, I had it all lined up and a dude in the wheelchair bumped into me! I was sort of pissed off, but then other stupid moron fans knocked the guy right out of his wheelchair and I was the only one to offer him help back in it,sad world we live in when shit like that happens over a ball.,

  8. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 1:06 pm

quick flash of Pads LU–1 guy hitting above .250, Hos at .273.

  9. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 1:08 pm

so much for lack of bombs.

  10. Macdog said, on June 24, 2018 at 1:09 pm

The LF bleachers may be a better spot for getting a ball.

  11. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 1:23 pm

I’ve gotten a few foul balls at minor league games, but never at a major league game. I came relatively close once at a game at Candlestick.

  12. Macdog said, on June 24, 2018 at 1:52 pm

    7 Dodgers HRs.

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:05 pm

The Mets were the Dodgers’ piñata all weekend.

    Samardzija or Pudgelet?
If you can only have one tatted up longhair in the rotation

After Bumgarner/Cueto, how the starters rank:
    3- Stratton
    4- Suarez
    5- Holland
    6-Rodriguez
(Only a suggestion, as one could easily make a case for any combination of pitchers listed above)
    7- Samardzija
    8- Blach
    9- Beede

    Gorks!

  15. Macdog said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:33 pm

    Gorks bomb!

  16. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:38 pm

Craw almost burned them, nice snag by Galvis.

    Order: One Gorkys Juice Bomb!!!

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:45 pm

He and Muncy are in a race to see who can win the Juice Newton questionable HR award this season.

  18. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:43 pm

Smarj’s contract is the only reason he’ll get to replace someone in the rotation. I don’t look forward to watching him pitch.

    • Macdog said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:46 pm

It’s hard to imagine he’d even match what Pudge Jr. has done today.

  19. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:46 pm

wow nice outing from the kid. One bomb from first hitter, not much since then. Got the ERA under 4.00 too, lower than Holland Strat Suarez and Blach.

  20. YogiBarrister (@Yogi47951368) said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:46 pm

    A legit quality start!

  21. chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:48 pm

Damned fine outing by D-Rod. 99 pitches, 69 for strikes. 4 H, 6 Ks, 1 BB, and that lead-off tater. Nice job by the kid.

  22. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:49 pm

If you’re a struggling journeyman hitter trying to get a job in the majors, and get some major league money, how tempting would it be to juice up?
Especially with teams so on the look for power in this juice ball/SABR-heavy era.

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:10 pm

or a kid growing up in less than ideal circumstances from a third world country where drug laws are quite different.

Btw,saw a book out today by writer who will be in Bay Area named Ace Smith. It’s about Satchel Paige (and couple others from Negro Leagues) being recruited to play in the DR by Trujillo 1937. “the Pitcher and the Dictator.”

      • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:17 pm

I hope my local library gets it.
I’m currently reading “Dead Wake,” by Erik Larson, about the sinking of the Lusitania during WWI. Very interesting book. Larson always does a great job with his books.

  23. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 2:53 pm

Pence is rockin’ a .456 OPS now.

  24. YogiBarrister (@Yogi47951368) said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:17 pm

Nice play by Renfro; I wish BF’s seats were right there where he made the catch.

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:22 pm

That’s pretty funny. BF is pretty good sized dude, and fit. He stands up and yells “MINE!” renfroe is toast.

  25. chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:27 pm

    Oh my. Pence sucks.

  26. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:30 pm

    another dribbler, what a surprise.
what bochy said in Chron re: Pence/Jackson was that everyone gave up on Gorks last year (guilty as charged) and now he’s productive player “You never forget the history of the players and the heart they have.”

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:35 pm

The Dodgers front office would just laugh at that quote from Bochy. There’s no way the Dodgers would keep two washed up guys like Pence and Jackson on their roster. The Red Sox wouldn’t do it either.

      • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:36 pm

The Sox are eating HanRam’s contract and Pablo’s still.

      • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:49 pm

Sox also went out and dropped $100 mil plus on J D Martinez who currently has OPS over 1.000 and 23 bombs.
Meanwhile, Giants FO worried about going $1 over the lux tax.

  27. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:41 pm

    Nice hit by Panik.
But um might want a faster runner out there to win this.
    Slater on deck to hit.
Bad AB there by Hanson who really likes low stuff from left side.

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:48 pm

With 5 outfielders, infield depth is thin. I know, I’m sounding like a broken record. 🙂
The younger generations don’t know that expression “sounding like a broken record.” A figure of speech that will eventually disappear.

  28. chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:57 pm

Unfuckingreal…Giants missed chances and then this….

  29. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:57 pm

That’s such a B.S. quote from Bochy. It’s all about the contracts with Pence and Jackson, nothing else.

    • chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:00 pm

Yep. There was discussion on that (and the luxury tax) on Marty’s show this morn. It Is pure BS…

Charles Johnson is a tight ass. Maybe that’s how he became the richest owner in MLB….

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:04 pm

Here’s other half of it. “Nobody is working harder than A-Jax or Pence. It would be different if that weren’t the case.”

  30. snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 3:59 pm

Not sure Blach was a guy you want to bring in to get one out in that situation. Lefty lefty, OK, whatever. And Moronta could throw another one in the dirt. But, Blach is a guy I’d want to bring in to start an inning. Moronta is way more likely to get a strike out, or the hitter won’t square one up hard, which Spangenberg did to drive in the run…

  47. snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:26 pm

This is the comment by MLB to its Pence walk off video.
I am not making this up:
“Hunter Pence lifts the Giants to a 3-2 win in 11 innings as he rips a double down the line in right to bring home two runs”…

    • xoot said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:29 pm

    • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:29 pm

gotta find twitter feed or something. Looked like 3 hopper at least lol.

      • willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:35 pm

um maybe not but it wasn’t moving much by time RF got to it.

  48. xoot said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:28 pm

These days Pence swings at those low breaking balls like an old woman swatting a broom at rats on the floor, but that’s one angry old woman who sometimes connects. Exit velocity on that rolling rodent was about 50 mph, but he fucking managed to hit it past a 1B playing off the line. Despite the frustrating moments, that was a fun game.

  49. chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:34 pm

“Pence swings at those low breaking balls like an old woman swatting a broom at rats on the floor…” That is fucking hilarious, xoot. Agree, damned entertaining game!

Too bad Rodriguez doesn’t get the W, because he sure as hell deserved it. Kid pitched his ass off today.

Interesting talk on KNBR pre-game about what will happen when Smardj and Cueto return. Was discussion of Rodriguez or Suarez going into the pen, and some of the dead wood, like Gearrin getting jettisoned…

    • snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:41 pm

I would keep Rodriguez starting, put Smardzxxx in the Pen. Does anybody here think Smardzxxx is going to throw a game like Rodriguez did today? Smardzxxx came up as a reliever, use him in that role…

      • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2018 at 6:41 pm

I suggested that, too – I think he had one real good year out of the pen.
Why the fuck is he entitled to reclaim his spot in the rotation?
Timmy and his big salary went to the fuckin’ pen – and this big dope couldn’t roll Timmy’s joint…

      • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2018 at 6:54 pm

Fuckin’ consonant crazy cocksucker’s done nothing here for his $90 million.
        Timmy’s a friggin’ legend.
I’m getting angry thinking about it…

      • chipower9 said, on June 24, 2018 at 8:21 pm

I agree, but we all know that probably isn’t how Bochy will play it. He has too much of a hard-on for his vets

  50. zumiee said, on June 24, 2018 at 4:38 pm

That was Hand’s 4th blown save btw, altho tough way to lose a ballgame.
Props to Pads for not (so far anyway) trading him away. Keeping an elite closer on team that’s now 10 games under .500 might not happen to other teams.

  52. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 5:01 pm

  55. djloo27 said, on June 24, 2018 at 6:35 pm

This was a big win if the Giants have any postseason dreams. A loss today would’ve put them 7 back of AZ in the LC with LA in between. With the WC probably not an option, they can’t afford to fall back much further…

    • snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 7:22 pm

      • Flavor said, on June 24, 2018 at 8:00 pm

i’ll check into that, that may be totally possible. I remember in the beginning twin asked me to take them OUT because he felt it was a way flappers could bully him. True story.

  56. willedav said, on June 24, 2018 at 7:07 pm

I would hope Giants do something like what LA did last season and put SPs on 10 day DL occasionally like say Holland or Strat. that way they hopefully stay fresher and the 2 kids DRod and Suarez go back down and continue to work every 5th day then come back up for couple starts as needed. If you put these guys in already crowded pen I don’t think they get much work—dyson melancon watson FLR Blach Moronta yada yada.

Smrdz imo ain’t going anywhere near the pen unless he totally craters when he comes back. He said he feels great right now so he can play the I wasn’t ever healthy card. Cueto apparently is couple more rehab starts away.

    • snarkk said, on June 24, 2018 at 7:24 pm

I’d be totally down with that. This Rodriguez kid looks like a keeper, he is MLB competitive right now. Suarez needs a bit more seasoning below, but he’s basically close to MLB ready. Beede is in the twilight zone with his needy wifey, he’s outta the picture…

  57. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 24, 2018 at 7:30 pm

That is a great pic, and it looks like someone is giving Pence a little nipple rub action. Lexi might get jealous. As for the Giants in the standings, they’re closer to the wildcard than the division lead, and even though there are 5 teams ahead of them for the WC, they might have a better chance of gaining on 4 of those teams than they do of passing both LA and AZ. Time will tell….

  58. Flavor said, on June 24, 2018 at 7:45 pm

No foul ball came my way so section 218 and its unsuspecting patrons were spared my wrath. There was a guy with a glove sitting in front of me. He was definitely going to be a problem. But in the end, it didn’t matter. We were sitting directly in front of Sabean and Evans box. They were watching the game with the shades up. After Pence struck out in the 6th or whenever I walked up the stairs and when I was right underneath Sabean’s box I yelled “Pence Sucks!!!!” and kept walking. When I returned, Sabean’s shade was down (although Evans’ was still up).
I haven’t seen any replays yet but I still don’t know how Belt didn’t catch that ball in the 11th. And Pence’s hit was just old glory at work there. He willed that damn ball down the line. Weakly hit but got the job done. He was celebrating like a madman running up the first base line and you all saw what happened after he got to the middle of the diamond.
All in all, a fantastic day at the yard…..

  59. Flavor said, on June 24, 2018 at 8:06 pm

ask and you shall receive. We now have thumbs up/down on comments. As I said above, years ago when I started the blog I had that feature but Twin emailed me asking me to take it down because he said it would encourage Flappers bullying of him.
It is past time to bring it back….

are those frantic people on the ground fleeing spectators or escaping passengers?

During the discussion on KNBR about the potential of Rodriguez or Suarez going to the pen, the thought was that since the starters are not going deep, there will be the innings available in the pen to keep these guys stretched-out. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Everything on Cueto is encouraging so far…

TF worrying about being cyber-bullied is pretty funny. Dude was possibly the biggest cyber-bully I’ve ever personally seen on George W. Bush’s internets.

I may try to give the McClain bat some real outdoor action soon.
I’ve been hitting ping pongs ball indoors with it.
    Really gives ’em a ride!

San Dawg would have already been to the park with the bat. Be careful. Oh what am I saying, if you snap it you’ll repair it good as new in a new york minute….
What do you guys out there think of that saying, btw? We use it out here a lot and I’m not sure why.

      • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2018 at 8:57 pm

I don’t think the saying applies anymore, Flavor.
        It’s from another era…

      • Flavor said, on June 24, 2018 at 9:08 pm

well than I’ll ditch it in a new york minute

        Yeah it’s like “lickety-split” and “toot-sweet”…

I haven’t hit a hardball in about 25 years, at a batting cage. I remember it being real hard to square a ball up. It truly is very difficult.

Holland last year pitched 135 innings. 2018 78 last time he made a lot of starts 5 yrs ago
Strat last year pitched 140 innings. 2018 87
    Suarez last year 153 innings. 2018 (AAA +) 88

bottom line they are all on pace to exceed what they’ve done with all the starts. At some point gotta wonder how they hold up.

Too lazy to check, but have our new pitchers done anything against anyone but Miami and San Diego?

I’m just really glad Loo explained the green tape on the McClain bat, cuz at first glance it was kinda bugging me. But the explanation was outstanding.

All I know is I’m going to welcome Smardzxxx back like the return of an old hemorrhoid…

He’s still owed about $50 million so he’ll be trotted out there for years to come.
He’s not much fun to watch pitch. The young pitchers are more fun to watch pitch.

Funny how many of us have bats laying around. I think I told the story of finding this bat (and a small gym bag with a mitt and a pro-style cap) at a game in 1978. A buddy and I had stuck around way after the game had ended and were just walking around down by 1st base side. Lost the mitt pretty quickly, lost the hat a dew years later, the bag fell apart in the 90s, but I still have the bat. It has a nice crack down by the handle that i taped with electrical tape.

I always hated Dale Murphy cuz he always seemed to kick our ass, but . . .
