Me And The Giants, Both On The Road
Tough one. A very winnable game that got away from us. Can’t win with only 5 hits in Nepal, though.
I’m headed up to Oregon today on a long and meandering trip up and down the west coast. I’ll have a laptop and will keep the threads humming.
Go Giants.
Enjoy, Craig, I’m envious. I don’t miss too much living over here, but road trips in the west, yep….
Have a safe and fun trip, Craig. And like Paul, I am jealous. I love the Oregon Coast. Enjoy.
Yeah, you would think 2-0 in the 7th, with Bum on the hill, that the game would be in the bag. But Coors Field again shows what a house of horrors it can be. Moranta struggled in throwing strikes, and if Crawford makes the play he routinely makes, that would have kept the game tied. Tough loss. Oh well, dust that shit off and get ‘em today.
Latest on Samardj – in his previous start in Sacto (before yesterday’s start), he threw a 40-pitch first inning, completed only four innings, and gave up six earned via seven hits. UGH….
Last night – Samardj went six, throwing 90 pitches, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 HR.
I know it will never happen, but IMO, Smardj should come back and do long relief.
He and Cueto both might make starts vs. STL this weekend. Hope the next 2 in Sherpland don’t blow up the pen, which didn’t help the cause much last night.
Only 2 runs on 2 bombs is fine for Samrjizz
Taking Bum out was tough call and I don’t fault Bochy. He wasn’t hit hard that inning and Blackmon was the key. If he’d been able to get him out they could have walked Arenado to load bases and maybe gotten out unscathed. As it was if not for Craw error game would have been tied. Tough L which seems to come with territory but 2 still to play.
W Davis seems to be exactly the high priced FA closer in question. See that ultimately works out for Rox.
Tough loss but 2 runs ain’t gonna cut it at Coors Canaveral.
So here’s the club’s international signings from yesterday. I don’t know about any of these kids but it is interesting to see their approach to younger prospects – more position players than pitchers. Anyone ever seen a game in Venezuela?
Marco Luciano, ss, Dominican Republic (No. 2 prospect) — $2.6 million signing bonus
Jairo Pomares, of, Cuba (No. 11 prospect) — $975,000 signing bonus
Luis Matos, of, Venezuela (No. 37 prospect)
Odue Civada, rhp, Venezuela/
Eduardo Jaramillo, c, Venezuela
Melvin Marte, rhp, Dominican Republic
Roberto Monegro, ss, Dominican Republic
Aaron Peniche, lhp, Dominican Republic
Victor Bericoto, cf, Venezuela
Yeiver Torrealba, 2b, Venezuela
Anthony Torres, lhp, Venezuela
Moronta was overthrowing big time last night, way too pumped up. He needs to get that under control to attain any kind of consistency. He has an unbelievable arm, but just going in and uncorking wild 99 mph heaters with no idea where they’re going ain’t going to get it done.
Felipe Alou does have his own Academy in the DR. You’d think that would help Giants somehow.
Daniel’s Cards started 9 game road trip by beating AZ and Ray last night 6-3, 4th L in row for Dbax. Cards had been swept at home by Braves so probably felt good to get out of Dodge. Giants have 2 more Ws 1 less L than them at this point in season. Would not have seen that coming.
Off-topic a bit. Just saw this article. I have read on more than one occasion that Giant management’s prime motivation on skirting the luxury tax is to set them up for going hard into free-agency, as buyers next year. And also on more than one occasion, the target is supposedly Harper. This is an interesting read on him…
I was wondering where the rest of FU stood on the potential to bring Harper into the fold?

Smarj only 3 K’s and 2 Hrs against a AAA line up? That’s not so good when you think about it…
Dude has shown no consistency since he started his rehab…other than giving-up the long ball…
Wow, some pretty harsh words from the unnamed exec. I wonder how widespread that belief is. It’s not like he hasn’t had some phenomenal years.
LJ – I am talking specifically since he started his rehab, which was I believe a start in San Jose (maybe two), and the latest two in Sacramento. Looking only at that sample, he has been less than stellar. I am NOT talking his career…
And seriously, the way he has looked vs. what D-Rod has shown us, I would rather have the kid taking the ball every fifth day, and have Shark doing long relief.
Just my opinion…one of many here.
That was supposed to be in reply to your Harper link, Chi. I swung and missed, just like the Giants.
Ah, my bad. Thought it was in reference to me throwing Smardj under the bus. 😉
No, I’m with you on the Shark. About Harper, if any of this stuff is true, it makes bringing him to the Giants less appealing.
Nice article, Chi; thanks!
Ken Rosenthal, on the MLB Network recently, has the thought that maybe Bryce’s pressure in this contract year is infecting the whole team, bringing more pressure on everyone. It’s a gloomy cloud hanging over the team.
Rosenthal also wonders how much the team misses Dusty Baker, who seemed to be a master psychologist with the Nats.
Harper is interesting. I think he’s tremendous talent and way less dislikable now. If you bounce some rudimentary B/R stats around the difference btw he and Stanton isn’t substantial at least for this year.
But yeah a hot streak where he carries his team back into first place wouldn’t hurt.
I would hope off season SF addresses the OF. Slater isn’t a power guy, Duggar wouldn’t be either and Gorks power etc hard to trust. Harper would be good place to start, and if you don’t get him adjust sights lower.
It will be interesting to see if they can land Harper. I doubt he would be interested but who knows? Put him in RF rounded out by some combination of Gorky/Duggar/Slater/Williamson and its a pretty good defensive alignment.
Yeah, it’s not like they aren’t getting a ton of production from Harper. And I don’t buy in to the me-first shit that floats around him
It ain’t my money, Chuck. If they can get him, get him.
That article is fairly alarming at his decline both offensively and defensively though.
Liked “Nepal.”

Pence? WTF? Let’s put the slowest guy at the top of the order? Brilliant. Surprised Strat isn’t leading off.
BF, enjoy your trip up Oregon Coast. What type of sights are you looking for: beaches, drunk bars, eateries, fishing, etc. Newport (my home town for now) is half way up. Lots of dope shops.
OSF
Flavor runs his own dope shop, Seal…
I understand OSF’s interest in dope shops. Here in Oakland they go out of their way to be friendly to us senior citizens. I’ll bet the discounts are even deeper in Oregon.
1. Alen Hanson (S) LF
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
4. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
5. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
6. Hunter Pence (R) RF
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Gorkys Hernandez (R) CF
9. Chris Stratton (R) P
It feels like an L is inevitable tonight.
The gravitational pull of .500 is very strong.
Over/Under on the number of times the Rockie announcers say “the narrative” per game: 11.5
So fuckin’ annoying…
Fucking Stratton sucks ass. Get him the fuck out of there, Bochy, before it’s 10-0.
Pence in the outfield sometimes resembles a kick returner trying to field a bouncing punt.
I never saw a baseball player lose all of his skills so quickly…
How can being 35 and washed up mean you’re fated to ridiculous looking plays like that? It really should show just a little more subtly …
Nice to see he’s learned to go oppo with his infield dribblers…
As always these holiday uniforms are hideous.
From the CF camera, the Rockies catcher looks like a dish towel…
Just got back from my workout. This team is driving me fucking crazy. So, we score 9 runs without a long ball in AZ, and now can’t hit the Rox shitty pitching (they are 29th in team ERA, and 26th in WHIP). AZ is 3rd in team ERA, 9th in WHIP (ML-wide). fffttt….
Come on, score some fucking runs, already…
Not to pile on but WTF?? Pence is in and Slater out? His defense kept us in the game, and he is hitting. lets keep him in there daily..
I told you to get his out of there. Now it’s 6-0. Game over.
Of course just as this piece of shit game moved toward some sort of record for sad, dull and desultory play, the rockies decided to inject some purpose and excitement.
Nice job by that homo fan in the CF stands one hopping Arenado’s bomb like he had it all the way…
Bochy listened to Lurker John after all …
I don’t think the time off strengthened Pence’s arm.
I have very real concerns about his health.
I think he needs a thorough check-up…
I think he needs to FUCKING RETIRE and go make videos with his bimbo wife. I’m done – He’s done!
every Giants fan I know from the youngest kid to the oldest dope fiend codger says, “I love Hunter Pence, but . . . . “
I swear the Giants mail it in every time they go to Denver. I hate that place. If MLB had half a clue, they’d raze that POS and force the Rockies to move to a lower altitude.
If you ever wanted to make the case that compiling RBIs represented some kind of skill, look no further than the absurd total Pence has this year – he’s still got it!
I think you were fairly impressed with Deron Johnson in 1965…
MINAJ might be the first mop-up outfielder in baseball…
Hey boys–Flavor set me up so I can post, I’m his dad. The Giants stink!
giants suck
Hey Hey….my old golfing partner! Good to have you on here, and yes the Giants do stink today.
If that’s Flavor’s dad, I’m Morris Stroud…
I almost made a Sophrosyne reference and thought better of it …
It is him. Flav is up visiting him right now.
That is my dad. He didn’t know how to post so I set him up. He’s not the most technologically sound Flapper put there but hey, he’s flapping away, that’s good enough for me!
Is he the one responsible for all those thumbs down today?
lol no. He hasn’t advanced to that level of trolling yet. He’s still working on posting something in real time. He watches all the games on tape. I finally broke it to him that they got killed tonight and that’s when he started posting
Bochy’s post-game interview impressed me, with his matter-of-fact, professionally respectful analysis of Stratton’s performance tonight, as if he couldn’t wait to see the asshole optioned away tomorrow.
Loo, a Raider guy I remember who only lasted one season was Richard Sligh, listed at 7 ft/300 lbs D tackle.
I think Mo Stroud is second tallest guy in history to play.
Hank says Holland to the pen and Bum is taking Strat’s next start with Cueto DRod Smardz set up Thurs-Sat.
Good. I guess Stratton will be headed to Sacramento.
I was going to say, someone has been running up and down this thread hitting the thumbs down button. My guess is Rooster or a reincarnated Sophrosyne.
Yeah, Loo and LJ, I was wondering the same thing, who’s the idiot “thumbs-downing” posts like wishing Craig a good road trip. Loser troll…..
I guess Stratton longed for the heat of Sac, he did his best to make it EZ for the FO to make that decision.
And, yes, BTW, what the hell was that lineup today?
Is there any chance anybody would take Pence if the Giants paid 90% of his salary? I assume that would take nearly $2 million off the most feared Lux Tax Limit Line. The LTLL is now the real General Manager of the Giants…
In two games so far, the Dodgers have out-scored the Pirates 25-3.
The Dodgers have hit 6 HRs tonight. Muncy now has 20 HRs. He’s hitting HRs like Barry Bonds. Interesting.
Until now I never heard of Muncy. Is he from Indiana?
Journeyman player suddenly hitting like Babe Ruth. Nothing suspicious.
Thames said he was drug-tested 10 times last season. I don’t know if he’s exaggerating, but I would hope MLB is diligent with Muncy, too.
The media won’t speculate because they don’t want to get accused of slander; but all the players, even the Dodgers, have to be wondering.
Welcome to Magnus el Senior.
DJLoo’s biting humor is intact, one of my guilty pleasures in coming back here.
Who was that guy who no-hit the Mets in 2015 or 2016 and poof! was gone (I don’t mean poof the way the Brits do). Chris Hester? Heston? Hester Prynne?
You were close: Chris Heston.
I mean your second guess was correct. 🙂
but if Hester Prynne were to marry him, she’d be Hester Heston
Giants just historically don’t do well at Coors.
I said yesterday after the first loss I’d take one win at Coors and be happy to get outta town.
Still sayin’ that…
August 24, 2009 at Coors — just the epitome of the Giants experience there, before and since.
You guys remember that game — in the 14th, after the Giants had taken the lead, the Rockies came back in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Spilborghs hit a walk off grand salami off Merkin Valdez. As soon as he hit the pitch and the crowd still there started to scream, Kuiper said a great line something like: “You’re not gonna like this…”
So Jameis Winston, who got away with raping a woman while he was at Florida St., has been suspended for 3 games this season for groping a female Uber driver. He should have been sitting in prison.
I saw a replay of Pence fielding that Story double in the 3rd, that he turned into a triple by flubbing the carom off the wall out there. And then a throw he made in the general direction of home plate later in the game that ended halfway up the first base line. My goodness, his defense just suxx eggs. Add to that he can’t hit. That double to left he got the other day was the first extra base hit to his pull field all season. How much longer are they going to put him out there — social media is full of fans asking the same question…
