giants suck

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 4, 2018

5 hits, 6 hits….11 hits in 2 games at Coors Field? Max Muncy has hit 18 bombs in the last 46 days. This is what we get when Bochy runs Hunter Pence out there instead of a good Stanford man like Slater…

It is the 4th of July, probably the best day of the year. Go eat 40 hot dogs, slams some beers and maybe somehow, some way the Giants don’t suck for a day and win a game in Colorado….

I’m headed to Black Butte this morning.

The 4th of July probably doesn’t even make my top 50 of days of the year.
Usually 100 degrees in the Valley (although much cooler this year.)
    I don’t drink alcohol.
Neighbors’ fireworks are unpleasant to hear. The fireworks torment dogs in the area.
Basically, to me, it just seems like a drinking holiday, like New Years Eve, another of my least favorite.
I DO like all the baseball that’s on all day, starting with a very early game this morning, so maybe it makes my top 50 after all. 🙂
The patriotic aspect of the holiday is something I don’t have to have the holiday for. I read a lot of books about American history every year. I think about the U.S. on an ongoing basis. There are many times I feel very proud and moved by our history, and our nation’s ongoing potential; and other times I feel shame, outrage, or despair about certain things.
I’m currently reading a book by Simon Winchester about the growth of the U.S. in the West. An excellent book. The book starts with Lewis and Clark, and Winchester brings lots of new interesting things to a story I thought I already knew a lot about. Winchester is great. Any book by him is a treat.

i can’t recall ever seeing a single person in a bad mood on the 4th of July. That’s a reason right there that it should make your top 50.

Happy Independence Day, Flap Universe. Cool to see El Hefe Sr. flapping last night.

I bailed on that POS game. Wow…we scored a fucking run.

Battle of the lefties today. I am with Snarkk, get one win today, and get the fuck outta dodge.

I am ecstatic that Stratton is the short man out. Win total be damned, I wanted to see D-Rod weather the return of Cueto and keep his spot in the rotation. Enjoy the sweltering Sacto heat, Strat, and don’t let the door hit ya in the ass on the way outta the clubhouse.

  3. Flavor said, on July 4, 2018 at 7:23 am

Here is the #1 reason Strat has to go. If he doesn’t have that *elite spin rate* nonsense he’s doomed.
Opponents batted .116 against the high-spin pitch last year. They entered Tuesday night hitting .310 against it this year.

  4. Flavor said, on July 4, 2018 at 7:26 am

This Cueto thing isn’t getting enough pub. Whether he can pitch effectively the rest of the year is the MAIN determinant of our success or failure this year. Sounds like nobody really knows what his arm will do. We’re about to find out….

    • chipower9 said, on July 4, 2018 at 2:38 pm

Specifically, tomorrow. If his two rehabs in Sacto were any indication, he’s ready. He had two very good starts and was throwing all of his pitches for strikes. Said he feels great.

  5. willedav said, on July 4, 2018 at 7:32 am

mm I think the other guys, Suarez and DRod, ,have a higher ceiling that Strat/Holland. Still a bit concerned how many innings they are pitching if they continue through end of year but we’ll see how that plays out.

I’ve ragged on Pence for a long time and I get how bad Jackson has been, but…these are 2 guys who play the least at the end of the bench. They aren’t going to be replaced by M Trout. Williamson wasn’t hitting either when he went down nor was Specs and Hanson is in a big slump/doesn’t have smoothest glove at any position.

The Giants are gonna win/lose due to how well the everyday guys play—Posey Belt Panik Craw sando/longo
Gorks Cutch fill in the blank. And of course SPs, who usually account for 75% of decisions. This is who they are and they’ve been playing pretty well lately (as DBax will attest), especially at home.

    • Flavor said, on July 4, 2018 at 7:39 am

for reasons you noted early in your post, I don’t think it’s a good idea to count on any of these young 5’s for meaningful, regular contributions in Sept or beyond. Bum can’t do it all by himself. Cueto is going to have to establish himself again as a #2 or this season is toast no matter how well everyone hits…

      • willedav said, on July 4, 2018 at 7:59 am

Agreed. If he can return to what he was doing before he got hurt and re establish himself it would be big boost. SDawg and I watched him that first time out vs. LA at the Goose and he dominated.

  6. snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 10:41 am

LA has the most talent in the West. I don’t see how that doesn’t translate to winning the division, unless more talent gets hurt and/or Roberts mismanages things. So, that leaves WC spots. Giants are no more than a .500 team, unless they get stellar pitching with Cueto back, and these young kids kick it up and their arms don’t fall off at the end of August. Otherwise, even the 2nd WC spot seems problematic. IMO you can’t have 2 end benchers as bad as Pence and Actionless, and expect to do something special. Look again at that Pence play at the fence in RF yesterday. The guy played the ball like Walter Brennan on ice. His defense suxxx, his offense suxx. What else is there? Any ownership/management that really wants to win would not have this guy on the roster. This ownership values money more than winning. Period. End of story. Which is understandable for a dogmeat organization like the White Sox, but a shame for a top revenue team. If this lux tax third rail thing is all about avoiding it to go after Harper next off season, that is a pipe dream. If Bochy wants Pence around to play a cheerleader/pastor role, then he can get DFA’d and become a coach doling out platitudes and overpriced coffee in the clubhouse. Else trade his ass to Pittsburgh, eat most of his paystub, but save just enough salary from that to move away from the third rail a bit to make a move to improve the team…

  7. snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 10:58 am

I am encouraged by the Giants two top gets in the international draft. Young kids, sure. Long way to go — 4 to 5 years even if that Luciano kid is the real deal. But, hey, they are in the mix of getting consensus top young offshore talent…

    • Macdog said, on July 4, 2018 at 11:01 am

This line from you last night sums it up best: The LTLL is now the real General Manager of the Giants…

  8. Lurker John said, on July 4, 2018 at 11:01 am

Happy 4th everyone. I agree, BF, easily one of my favorite days of the year, if not my favorite. Always has been.

  9. zumiee said, on July 4, 2018 at 11:04 am

The way the Nats are plummeting, there are some baseball pundits wondering if the Nats would trade Harper. That would be wild to see both Harper and Machado getting traded.

    • snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 11:47 am

Dusty may be having a major case of schadenfreude right now, and I wouldn’t blame him…

    Happy 4th of July !
I’m celebrating our nation’s birthday by giving money to politicians for the first time in my life. Ever. Online contributions to several politicians in toss up Congressional districts, none my own. I’ll do more as I research where the money will do the most good. It is time for me to put up or shut up about what is going on in this country; before we allow a minority governance to turn tail on the founding principles that July 4th is all about. People at Lexington and Concord and Omaha Beach gave far more than just money to secure and preserve bedrock principles I see being pissed away under this current disaster of a federal government…

I just re-read 1984 about six months ago. It was as great this time as it was when I first read it in high school.

    • chipower9 said, on July 4, 2018 at 2:43 pm

Great post, and my sentiments exactly. I am fucking livid with the shenanigans being pulled by tRump and his cronies. I too have been making contributions to some of the toss-up congressional races. Time to take back our country.

      • snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 3:41 pm

I’m with you Chi. Did you see that group of 7 US senators (all Rs, no Ds invited) groveling in front of a bunch of Russkie regime apparatchiks yesterday in Moscow? The group begged for a meet with Putin and he said no, he was busy. WTF is going on, are we now reduced to asking Russians advice on how to run our country, or being told? This is just whacko, off the rails…

      • Lurker John said, on July 4, 2018 at 4:30 pm

Exactly. I felt the same way with 8 years of the incompetent Obummer. I’m so glad we’re taking our country back under Trump’s fine leadership.

    Happy 4th of July ladies!
Speaking of which anyone know how many hotdogs Joey Chestnut inhaled in Coney Island?Think he was shooting for 80 dogs this year!! My god my ass would blow chunks for a week clearing that shit out!!

  13. djloo27 said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:23 pm

Like a lot of things, July 4th was 1,000 times better as a kid…

    • zumiee said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:31 pm

When we’re kids we think hotdogs are the greatest food ever, and then as adults we know they’re not.
But they’re still pretty tasty off a BBQ grill. And we just accept the fact we’re eating pig snout.

  14. alleykat69 said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:35 pm

    Agree Loo!
Used to be legal growing up.Every kid, parents on the block lit them up, from fire 🔥 crackers, bottle rockets, cherry bombs,M-80’s(especially effective for blowing up a mailbox)Roman Candles, pick a low Petes, spinning fire wheels nailed to a telephone pole, the stupid smoke snakes 🐍, that my parents hated cause they left a black mark on the driveway for awhile lol 😂
If you have ever watched the Zodiac killer movie the opening scene was all about fireworks on neighborhood blocks, just reminded me how cool 😎 it really was!!

    • Macdog said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:44 pm

Come to my neighborhood, there’s been no shortage of people setting off fireworks and firecrackers at all hours of the night (and day, for that matter) for at least the last two weeks.

    • zumiee said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:46 pm

Everybody’s parents hated those snakes, so that made it even more appealing to try to get away with burning those things.
Those snakes were the strangest thing in retrospect. They make no sense.

    • snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 2:01 pm

My Dad always bought a big box of “Safe and Sane” miscellaneous fireworks called the “Block Party”, and we set them off in the back yard on a big piece of plywood with neighbors attending. I never did get the snakes thing, it was a pain cleaning them up. Our dog hated the fireworks, we had to keep him inside because he would attack the spewing cones and burn himself, the doofus…

  15. Macdog said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:42 pm

The July 4th fireworks display near where I live in NJ has been canceled, apparently because the fireworks company didn’t have a hazmat-licensed driver to deliver the fireworks.

  16. snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:43 pm

    Hey Kat, this just in:
Joey Chestnut took his 11th title in the Hot Dog Eating contest at Nathans Coney Island.
    74 dogs in 10 minutes…

“I found a vicious rhythm,” the 34-year-old Chestnut said after the stuffing session. “I was feeling good today.”…

    • zumiee said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:51 pm

The contestants after the contest is over:

      • snarkk said, on July 4, 2018 at 1:54 pm

According to Nathans, 70 hot dogs weighs 15 pounds, so Chestnut chugged a little more than that with 74.
That’s not counting the water they dip the buns in so they can shove the dogs down.
I have no idea how these guys keep all that down, without rupturing the stomach…

  20. chipower9 said, on July 4, 2018 at 2:48 pm

Independence Day for me has lost its luster, but as a kid, it was right up there with Xmas as my favorite holiday. We would gather at our house, a relative’s house, or head to Osage Hills State Park. It was always a BBQ and party. Great memories. Other than reminding me of the true meaning of the day (our independence from oppression), and a day off from work, this holiday doesn’t do much for me, anymore.

  21. chipower9 said, on July 4, 2018 at 2:55 pm

While he doesn’t show on the 25 on sfgiants.com, Cueto takes the bump tomorrow. Hoping he returns to his form prior to going on the DL. Dude was pitching lights-out!

3-0 in five starts with a 0.84 ERA, and a 0.688 WHIP. Small sample size, but dominant numbers. And dominance is what we need from him now.

“all men are created equal”–well, all monied and landed white men were. That’s the fourth of July. The majority of people down there in the southern plantation states were only 3/5 of a person, according to the constitution that followed, although that 3/5 per slave capita turned out to be important for purposes of calculating representation in congress and electoral college members. The southern states dominated the federal government for a long long time, until Lincoln was elected, in fact. I think 10 of the first 12 USA presidents were substantial southern slave owners. Washington, Jefferson and Madison sure as shit were. The myth of “states’ rights” didn’t rise until new states joined the country and refused to support slavery.

    • xoot said, on July 4, 2018 at 4:42 pm

lighter note, the funniest fourth of July celebration I’ve ever seen occurred back in the 70s in a shitty Panamanian port town on the Caribe side. You know your bus has crossed the border between Costa Rica and Panama when you see kids carrying baseball gloves instead of soccer balls. (Rod Carew and Mariano Rivera and about 75 more Panamanians have succeed in mlb; not many Costa Ricans.) Anyway, I was stuck for a few days waiting on a small freighter to hop to the canal. It was the sort of place where you had to be sure to avoid the vultures scavenging in the muddy streets. On the fourth of July, a uniformed troop of the national army somberly marched through town bearing a USA flag. No music, no warning, and no reaction or interest at all from the residents of the town. The vultures grudgingly gave way to the thumping boots.

Muncy walked for the 45th time. Teams have no idea how to pitch to this guy, and they’re afraid to throw anything in the strikezone.

      • alleykat69 said, on July 4, 2018 at 6:16 pm

Agree on that Zumie, and Suarez see’s that he’s in his jock, so you have to push it right towards the 1B who gets a late break holding on Specs..These pitchers have to know basic shit like that, but never seem to excute in a game..
