This guy Canha…I don’t like this guy. Did you catch his interview after the game? He apologizes for the bat flip and then 2 seconds pass and he takes the apology back. I could care less about bat flips but this was a double barreled moronic dispute he had with himself. As many have said on Twitter, it wasn’t the bat flip that he should apologize for it was the “This is my house!” that this now .143 career hitter at AT&T shouted to his teammates after his bomb. Kuip ended it well with this exchange with Kruk:

Anyway, I’d encourage you all to read Daniel’s thoughtful blog post today about Matheny’s firing. I’ve never been a fan, he’s always just seemed to me like a former player just standing around and spitting seeds and hoping for the best. The long, blank stares he directed toward the infield after the 2012 and 2014 NLCS deciding games were an outrageous sight to behold. Here’s the link:

Now, let’s see Croatia win one for the motherland and then we can be done with soccer for a while…..

i love watching athletes from other countries sing along to their natty anthems with tears in their eyes with me not knowing any of the words or what the fuck they are saying. I lulz to myself every time, not sure why….

now THAT was a sick goal by Cro.

  3. snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 8:37 am

I would like to see Bochy ride off this post-season for a long fishing trip to the Sea of Cortez. And, forget he’s signed through 2019. Maybe Matheny can join him as the BaitBoy. Unfortunately, Bob Melvin is signed through 2019. Maybe the A’s will be stupid and fire him at the end of this season…

Nobody seems to know why the ASG is a week later this year, especially strange in a season that began in March. Could it possibly be because MLB didn’t want any competition from the soccer tournament?

    • Macdog said, on July 15, 2018 at 8:58 am

Hard to imagine that. There was only one WC game last Tuesday, a semi, and that was played during the day U.S. time, so there would’ve been no conflict with ASG.

      • djloo27 said, on July 15, 2018 at 9:12 am

        Like I said…

      • Macdog said, on July 15, 2018 at 9:17 am

That said, I certainly have no idea why the ASG is a week later than usual.

Flav watching the World Cup final, this is a pleasant surprise! I just got done watching Djokovic dismantle Anderson to win Wimbledon, so now I’m on the Cup. Cool stuff on a Sunday morning.

    • Flavor said, on July 15, 2018 at 10:11 am

I watched the first half and then went for a run with my daughter. Still, that’s a lot of soccer for me.

A’s pen outdid SF last night. Kenley Jansen gave up a bomb too and took the L in 10th vs. Angels.
someone mentioned Strick yesterday…doesn’t seem like Giants miss him much. time to move on esp with how well Moronta has been along with most others in pen.

Thought SF and Cards matched up for a deal in off season. They always seem to have OF and young talent from farm to spare.

Thx for that link to Daniel, very well thought post as per usual. Don’t think he and fanbase expected Cards to be so up and down and .500 team. Someone’s head had to roll.

When Melancon got Canha out in the 8th, I was hoping he’d say something to him. Maybe fuck with his head and tell him, it’s our house, a very, very very fine house. With two cats in the yard. Or just skip off the field doing the la la la part.

    Error-filled World Cup final.
At least it’s not 0-0 headed for PKs…

  9. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 15, 2018 at 10:11 am

Even with Belt getting tossed and all the bat flip nonsense the Giants still had 11 LOB and let that game get away. Win today and take the series.

    • Flavor said, on July 15, 2018 at 10:12 am

Yes. Lost in all this is that we only scored 3 runs in a game Brett Anderson pitched in. Embarrassing

  10. snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 10:25 am

Giants haven’t yet gotten a mash job from the A’s bats.
I’m looking for a good game from Suarez; Giants need to get out in front early today so an HR or two by the A’s doesn’t pressurize them early.
Giants need to run and put pressure on Manaea and A’s defense, which is worse than SF’s…

    • willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 11:19 am

bunch of near misses last night esp while smrdz was in there. Duggar made hella nice grab on one.

Curious who you’d like to see replace Bochy–a Girardi type vet with winning hist and experience or someone younger?
I’m more worried about type of team Sabe/Evans gives mgr. to work with.

      • snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 12:20 pm

I want a younger guy, from outside.
A guy that is up for dealing with younger players when its not absolutely necessary and dictated by emergency or injury. Hello Melvin.
I think Bochy’s vaunted rep as a Svengali to the Pen is overblown. When he had a great Pen, he was great with the Pen. When the Pen sucks (last year), the genius disappears…

      • willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 1:34 pm

yeah I like Melvin a lot. didn’t realize he was such a local guy–Menlo School canada college JC and Cal.
But he’ll be 57 later this year; 15 years experience.

  11. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 15, 2018 at 10:58 am

Impressive outing from Black last night. Tough one for Watson but he’s been so good all season. Bullpen decisions are going to be interesting.

Yeah, I heard on radio earlier this morning Pavlovic say that Samardzxxx was still obviously hurt, that the FO was going to have to make a decision, but he mentioned possibiity of surgery, not specifically now to the DL. Shoulder issues are no bueno. Shut him down, do the surgery if needed. There goes any trade to the Yanks…

      • djloo27 said, on July 15, 2018 at 2:18 pm

Snarkk, I don’t know where you got that Smarj to the Yanks thing. The only thing you might get back for him is Ellsbury and his equally shit contract. The Yanks want to catch Boston, not get blown out every 5th day…

      • snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:33 pm

The only thing I got on that was a local report a few days ago that the Giants had let the Yanks know Smardjy was available.
Kinda like telling Penelope Cruz that I’m available, too…

  13. snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 1:22 pm

Bochy phucks daily with the LU hole that regulars find themselves in. One day Duggar might leadoff, next day he’s in the 7 hole. Same with Belt, Craw, Gorkys, whomever. IMO that can’t be good for your hitting…

    Chase d’Arnaud 3B R
    Brandon Belt C-1B L
    Andrew McCutchen RF R
    Buster Posey C-1B R
    Brandon Crawford SS L
    Gorkys Hernandez LF R
    Steven Duggar CF L
    Kelby Tomlinson 2B R
    Andrew Suarez P

Flemm going on and on in the broadcast about the speed of the A’s hits.
Dude, hits are hits. 4 straight hits can’t all be luck. Strike somebody out, pop somebody up. They’re putting bat on the ball and hitting ’em where they ain’t. That’s baseball…

  30. Flavor said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:38 pm

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell that Posey gets to 10 bombs this year. He might hit one, two max after the break.

    • snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:41 pm

Hell, if that cortisone shot doesn’t work, he might go onto the DL for a while. In fact, he probably should anyway…

    • Lurker John said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:26 pm

Go with Loo’s 11.5 over/under for Pence/Posey combined HR’s. Taking the over is a fool’s bet. It’s hard to see Pence even running into one, let alone the 5 or 6 it’d take to beat that number. 50 RBI’s isn’t looking too good for Posey either.

  31. Flavor said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:45 pm

    • xoot said, on July 15, 2018 at 5:39 pm

that’s true. He’s probably lucky he just missed out on the AS festivities. He can work out and sleep and watch some recent video of the umps jobbing him. Should further sharpen his edge.

  32. snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:47 pm

I said before this series that the Giants had to outpitch the A’s, they can’t outhit them.
In their only win Friday night, Giants basically got gifted the win; these last two losses the A’s outpitched them and had more SLG. Giants look old and beat up, with a couple of young guys that look like they can help, but no great shakes, and still trying to find the clubhouse and make sure Bochy doesn’t forget them…

  33. willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:48 pm

well HR didn’t beat Giants today and they still have given up 6 fewer than they have hit, big improvement over last year. Losing Longo who had 10 hasn’t helped them vs. LHP. Sando and Hanson don’t do much hitting from right side. The guys who are there that Mac mentioned earlier plus Belt are the culprits and I still don’t much care for Gorks.

So…with Smardz gone again, what happens to roster/rotation? Leave the extra bench guy up and move Holland back in as SP? Leave him where he is and recall Strat? Someone else beside Specs from Sac?

    • snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:51 pm

I’m guessing Stratton because of RH. I think they partly sent him down to give him a breather…

  34. zumiee said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:56 pm

A’s fans can enjoy the series win, yet also know that a bunch of these A’s players will be traded off in the next few years.

    • Lurker John said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:23 pm

They’re having a far better season than the Giants. As a Giants fan, you really don’t have much leverage to criticize them. They just spanked your team 2 of 3 and today wasn’t even competitive. Maybe the Giants should try something different because what they’ve been doing the last three years isn’t generating much more than a lot of yawns.

  35. snarkk said, on July 15, 2018 at 3:58 pm

Well, what’s the Conclusion on the first half+ of this season?
For me, a competitive team, that’s first. Definite improvement over least year’s debacle. Watchable. Mostly because of Rodriguez, Suarez, Hanson, Slater, Duggar.
    Disappoints: Jackson, McCutchen, Longoria.
    Plusses: Smith, Hundley, Pablo.
Good enough to win division? No, not with current roster.
Good enough to get at least WC II? Only if everything goes right, meaning the offense catches fire, the two young starters don’t crater, and the Pen’s arms don’t fall off after being overused in the first 100 games…

    • djloo27 said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:11 pm

      No love for the Brandons?

    • Lurker John said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:17 pm

Fuck no they’re not good enough to win the division and the WC is a very, very long shot. The Giants have settled into a philosophy whereby they are completely satisfied to be a mediocre offensive team. Why? Because they play in a “pitcher’s park” and “that’s who they are?” Who the fuck knows, but it makes for some very boring baseball at times. And the front office seems okay with that, likely because they’re raking in millions every year.

I miss the days when the Giants regularly had among the best hitting teams in the game. Using the park as an excuse for not drafting and developing talented young hitters is a joke.

  36. Lurker John said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:11 pm

More Giant fun against the A’s, a team the Giants have never been able to handle, no matter the era. Pathetic series. Expect more of the same next weekend.

  37. zumiee said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:45 pm

Baseball is now in the juiced ball launch-angle era, and the Giants aren’t built that way. It’s a pretty simple era. Hit home runs and strike people out. I don’t know how the Giants are going to navigate the future with the current front office. It’s not their fault that the baseballs were changed, and the Giants got caught with the wrong kind of team. It’s a perfect storm. They chose not to blow things up and start over, so we’re in that area in the middle, hoping to eek into a second Wild Card spot. The front office has much deep thinking to do, or the ownership group could just clean house in the front office.
And why was Dusty Baker hired?

  38. zumiee said, on July 15, 2018 at 4:57 pm

While driving lately, I’ve been listening to a Kinks best-of CD. A really good band that is somewhat under-rated.
I dedicate the song “Better Days” to the Giants for their next series with the A’s, next weekend.

“Here’s wishing you the bluest sky
And hoping something better comes tomorrow
    Hoping all the verses rhyme
And the very best of choruses, too
Follow all the doubt and sadness
I know that better things are on the way
Here’s hoping all the days ahead
Won’t be as bitter as the ones behind you
    Be an optimist instead
And somehow happiness will find you
    Forget what happened yesterday
I know that better things are on the way
It’s really good to see you rocking out
    And having fun
    Living like you’ve just begun
Accept your life and what it brings
I hope tomorrow you’ll find better things
I know tomorrow you’ll find better things”

    • willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 6:12 pm

well for one the A’s won’t have to play K Davis in LF, which to me makes it not real baseball.

I will say this tho–watching the A’s they seem like the perfect type of team for Giants to be (in NL West) if they had better SPs—young athletic (except for Lucroy) with pop from both sides of the plate, tho predominantly honky. Neither Davis nor Semien are very good fielders.

  40. djloo27 said, on July 15, 2018 at 6:08 pm

Just wondering: Have the Giants had anyone in the HR Derby since Bonds?

  41. willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 6:37 pm

Loved the Kinks from their first hits over here in ’60s. Doors actually stole the opening riff for Hello I love you from their song All Day and All of the Night.

  42. willedav said, on July 15, 2018 at 7:07 pm

for all the bombs LA Dodgers have hit they are what 4-5 games ahead of SF? And that’s with the scrapheap find of Muncy who has 22.

If you want a bet on bombs, 10 is about what I’d guess for Duggar and Slater combined too. these guys might help win some games but they aren’t gonna help with bombs. Giants have to address this in off season—get a legit .800 OPS bat with some pop for the OF, since I doubt Shaw has this type of capability being a LH.

This was supposed to be Cutch and Longo which for most part hasn’t worked out. But if you don’t have one in system you have to go get one next year. I’d try and improve 2b too while they’re at it. Why not get in on bidding for Scooter Gennett?

    • djloo27 said, on July 15, 2018 at 7:21 pm

Would love to have Gennett, but Giants have nothing to offer…

This is a pretty interesting and recent article for the intellectual crowd here. Not for me.
