D-Rod hadn’t thrown a pitch off a mound, in his life, until 2013. Trip out on that…..

As you know, that’s only a year before we won #3. And now he’s regularly dominating big league line ups. It is still inconceivable to me that the Twins just let this dude flitter off into the wind for nada. Every article I read about this just glosses over the question we all have: Why did the Twins let him go? The best answer I’ve found is that he was simply “blocked”. Respectful question, but by who?

Talking heads on KNBR were issuing caution saying “Remember Hesto Presto.” To me, that’s nonsense. Rodriguez has sick stuff, Hesto Presto had one lucky night. The obvious issue going forward is going to be number of innings of that arm.

If Bumgarner is going to anchor something, today would be a good day to start doing that….

There’s some spotty history involved with guys who throw no hitters. A’s had a guy Mike Warren no hit the white sox end of 1983 and 2 years later he was gone. Almost forgot about Heston. Did I see Beede is in the pen now? wow what a waste of space, spacey little woman included.

  2. alleykat69 said, on July 21, 2018 at 10:07 am

You know I’m old school, this shit about a lot of innings on a arm is BS.This kid is young, strong, knows how to pitch, lm sure Boch and the pitching coach have a good idea when to pull him if needed, pitch count, situational matchups, skip will say give me 7 son and have fun..

    • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:07 pm

It really isn’t, especially when those innings start when a guy is younger. Stats back it up throughout baseball history. Rodriguez shouldn’t be included necessarily because he’s already 24 and hasn’t thrown that much, but a guy like Bum, yes, and witness Felix Hernandez. He’s only 32 and is now paying big time for his heavy use at a young age and has been the past few years.

Bochy and Giants making noises like Samardzxxx may come back next week. MRI shows nothing. 95.7 FM sportstalk random dudes this morning were spot friggin’ on calling out the Giants for managing their roster because of contracts. Pence, hello. Bringing this guy back and expecting different results on the mound is insanity, and its all because of his contract, not because of what he can do. If the team misses the WCII spot by a game — look no further than this string of Samardzxxx joke starts. Holland is better, Stratton is better (good game last night in AAA). At best, put him in the Pen for lost cause games…

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:59 pm

Yep, Tom. And I think many Flappers have said as much. I have said since Smardj’s first DL stint that he should have come back and pitched out of the pen. Fuck, the dude started his career there. And this bullshit that he (or any vet) gets the starting spot in these situations is bullshit. You should ALWAYS do what is best for the team’s chances to win, period. Slotting Smardj back into the rotation flies in the face of logic.

  4. alleykat69 said, on July 21, 2018 at 11:15 am

    Agree totally Snarkk!
Alphabet should not sniff a start, BP mop up games when he can give up some bombs when it doesn’t matter and save some innings for more useful arms is the only way they should play it!!
Shit their so far away from call ups that could possibly help, yet we will continue to play with 22 players, freakin absurd!!

  5. djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 11:29 am

I think management’s attitude is be happy with your 3 titles – you never thought you’d even see one.
    I can’t completely disagree…

    • Flavor said, on July 21, 2018 at 11:55 am

that’s a shitty attitude if you ask me

      • djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:01 pm

        Do you think it’s true?

      • Flavor said, on July 21, 2018 at 4:59 pm

        Yes

    • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:21 pm

I can believe management might thing that, but fuck taking that attitude for myself. There’s no reason in hell the Giants shouldn’t be one of the franchises in the mix for playoffs and titles every year. They have huge resources, a great park and a devoted fanbase. Any issues related to recent on-field play come down to crappy scouting and development and dubious decision making by the front office in the form of some horrible free agent signings and a penchant for never-ending dumpster-diving. They often seem to want to protect the bottom line over really going for broke and putting the best team possible on the field. The Dodgers work a deal for the highly talented Manny Machado, while the Giants, so far, have done squat. As usual.

      Just my opinion, of course.

      • alleykat69 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:18 pm

I think 🤔 you nailed it LJ great post!
They definitely don’t have a clue on some of these “bust signings” and they were fortunate some Dumber GM took are baggage away..

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:01 pm

I think that is a totally fucked-up attitude, and may be true. Would not be surprised that their logic is to keep milking that 3 in 5.

  6. snarkk said, on July 21, 2018 at 11:29 am

BTW, Slater is still on the 25, but apparently wearing an invisibility suit…

      Hologram…

  7. Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:14 pm

I don’t know that I agree that Rodriguez has “sick stuff.” He has an average fastball and two pretty good secondary pitches, both of which he left up a lot last night and that the A’s just didn’t hit. I think there’s some potential there and I hope he realizes it. The Giants are in desperate need of some young starting pitching and he and Suarez have kind of come out of nowhere to give us some hope for the future. Stratton looked good early on, then went and had a kid.

Shark is dogmeat and Cueto is very iffy right now. Bum? Who knows, I’m hoping this “extended spring training” starts winding down and he gets back on track and finds his sharpness again.

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:03 pm

Interesting comments just now by the Mets broadcast crew (including Darling and Hernandez) about how the nature of the SF crowd changed when they moved out of Candlestick. They said it went from “gritty” to “gentrified, urban, and festive”…

    • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:25 pm

Why would the Mets broadcasting crew be talking about the Giants fans now? Candlestick Park’s grittiness contributed to the fans being that way, too, imo.

      • djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:29 pm

They were discussing parks with a lot of foul territory and just went off on a tangent…

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:06 pm

Lots of truth there…not sure you wanted to bring the kids to a Giant-bum Friday night game at the Stick. Those were some wild times in the bleachers….

  11. djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:42 pm

Ironically, by winning last night the Giants put themselves in the position of having to sweep the weekend series to win the trophy. Had they lost, they would’ve only needed to win today and tomorrow…

    • zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:52 pm

I don’t think that is correct.

      • djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:03 pm

        You’re right – it’s not…

    • Flavor said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:11 pm

      • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:12 pm

        Agree…MOST asinine tie-breaker, ever.

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:11 pm

I mentioned this last night. Regarding “the trophy,” today’s game is meaningless. Tomorrow’s winner wins the trophy.

  12. Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:51 pm

I remember visiting teams had to walk down the right field line to get to the clubhouse at the Stick. One year Reggie Smith had a full beer dumped on his head down there. Ah, those were the days. When the Dodgers came to town, it was ON.

    • zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:56 pm

And the visiting team had the third base dugout. Any opposing player thrown out of the game had to take a long walk of shame.

    • djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 12:57 pm

Darling was talking about that walk and the abuse the visitors would get from about 1,000 fans wearing hats covered in pins…

      • zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm

The poor Dodgers were usually facing a near sold-out Stick. Giants fans got so up for those games with the Dodgers.

      • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:03 pm

And lubed up on cheap beers. LOL

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:16 pm

The best was prior to the games against the bums when tommy lasagna was managing them….he would do a slow walk to the dugout to a loud chorus of boos, all while blowing kisses to the crowd. Those were good days…even though the Giants rarely had a team worth a fuck…

  13. Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:06 pm

People loved to hate on the Stick for its obvious flaws, but when it was packed with 58,000 rabid fans it was a pretty good homefield advantage for the Giants. Not many crowds in baseball were larger or louder on those days. I miss that place.

    • Flavor said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:09 pm

I loved the Stick. I miss it, I’m not just being nostalgic, I really miss it.

      • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:15 pm

Yep, me too, warts and all.

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:19 pm

Loved it. Miss it. I’m with Flav…I truly miss that old shithole. And the troughs in the men’s room, too. It was definitely a much different vibe than the phone park…

And it had a REAL parking lot in which you could tailgate. Damn, we had some bad ass pre-game parties in that parking lot!

  14. zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:07 pm

The Stick was just so horribly cold at night. When I went to a night game, I had to dress like I was climbing Mt. Everest.

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:20 pm

That is why they issued the Croix De Candlestick pins for extra inning night games. It WAS a badge of honor.

  17. zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 1:15 pm

Speaking of Mt. Everest, it blows my mind that if people die high up on the mountain, their bodies are left up there. Some of the bodies have even become directional landmarks for climbers. It’s too hard and risky for oxygen-deprived people to try to carry down heavy frozen bodies.
The high-level mountain-climbing thing is something I don’t really get.

Hell the Stick was great 👍 well especially when the Dogpile was in town.Big crowds , I was down the right field line for some of the games, and yeah when a Dodger needed to use the can,58,000 plus let him have it, cause they made the “Piss man Walking 🚶‍♂️ “ jaunt to their clubhouse since no toilet facilities were available back then, it was wild 😜 to see some of their faces in extreme anxiety mode!!!

  20. snarkk said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:16 pm

I don’t understand talk on radio about SF getting some other Pen arm before the trade deadline. They’ve got Pen guys hanging from the woodwork, plus Musclehead coming back in a few weeks who will kick a guy out the Pen, and Samardzxxx who should be relegated to the end of the Pen bench…

  21. Macdog said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:20 pm

What the hell do the A’s need Familia for? They already have one of the top closers with Treinen, and from what I saw last weekend, their set-up guys Trivino and Buchter are pretty damn good, too.

  22. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 2:52 pm

Anyone watching any of the Rugby Sevens being played this weekend at the phone park? I just watched the U.S. destroy Wales about half an hour ago.

Fun game…very open and fast-paced. Two 7 1/2 minute halves, with like a five minute halftime. Boom, and the game is over…

Jones hits a mammoth HR and gets sent down, as if having Pence on the bench is better than having Jones.

  24. zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 3:58 pm

  25. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 4:02 pm

No surprises with the Pence/Jones situation. I think it was Snarkk who earlier mentioned how these types of decisions are all salary driven, and absolutely NOT what is in the best interest of the team.

Pence truly should develop some type of mystery ailment, such as lackanooky, retire, and ride off into the sunset. And Smardj should be riding shotgun with him…pfffttt…

    • djloo27 said, on July 21, 2018 at 4:15 pm

With Pence, I think it’s just not wanting to embarrass a major force in 2 titles. Exactly like Cain.

J.K. Simmons in Farmers Insurance commercials….what’s going on with that? Is he portraying a fictional insurance agent, or is he portraying himself, J.K. Simmons, as someone who is part of the corporation? Using a well-known actor messes with the suspension of disbelief of the viewer. I find the commercials off-putting. He uses the folksy fake-friendly tag-line “we’ve seen a thing or two.” An advertising strategy that I find annoying.

  32. willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 5:48 pm

Cueto is from San Pedro de Macoris, the old “home of the shortstops” in the DR.
One of the not so nice words Tony Pena (also from DR) used to use in a baseball book I read was “cono” rolling the n like in senor. As in, “I call a good game cono.”

Whatever zum. I saw a guy all over the place all night. Since he came back, more accurately.

About fucking time Bochy got off his ass and made the change. Bum had obviously lost it…

  54. xoot said, on July 21, 2018 at 7:36 pm

well, it’s not as if we don’t have experience with starters who can’t go five

    • chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 7:37 pm

      lulz…

  55. Macdog said, on July 21, 2018 at 7:36 pm

Does Bum just have no control, or is he afraid to throw a strike? Either way, he does not look good.

  56. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 7:40 pm

Nice DP. They need some serious damage control before the game gets away….

  57. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:01 pm

    Fucking Crawford….

  58. willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:08 pm

wow what a grab by Craw. F/G guys had wondered about drop off in D as he got older…ain’t happening.

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:09 pm

I did too. He is sure having super season and didn’t bring the AB out to the field with him.

  59. xoot said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:15 pm

on Macdog’s good question earlier, why did the a’s trade for another closer? Bob Melvin’s quick hook on Cahill suggests that the a’s have some experience with starters who need relief the third time the LU comes up.

  60. Macdog said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:16 pm

Amazing how the smartest baserunner on the Giants also happens to be the slowest.

    • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:42 pm

      That’s a hell of a good point.

  61. willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:21 pm

maybe that’s why they got Familia.

  62. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:21 pm

Pence has been way overdue. Timely hit…

  63. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:22 pm

I like the bunt there…wish the Giants would use the squeeze more….

  64. snarkk said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:26 pm

Giants must be one of the worst bunting teams in MLB. All Gorkys has to do there is just make contact, and Hanson scores the tying run. Sheezus…

  65. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:26 pm

Duggar looking a little overmatched tonight…

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:30 pm

yeah it’s gonna be learning experience. Still so far he’s got 15 Ks and 1 BB in 36 ABs…not typical leadoff numbers.

  66. snarkk said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:26 pm

Giants are expert at leaving men on third with 1 or fewer outs…

  67. Macdog said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:36 pm

Did I just hear “Like A Rolling Stone” for Canha’s walk-up song?

    • zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:38 pm

      Yes.

    • xoot said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:43 pm

yeah, that’s been annoying me every time I hear it. Not exactly sacrilege, but still . . . .

  68. zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:38 pm

I saw a stat earlier today; the A’s are something like 35-0 when leading after 7. Yikes.

    • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:44 pm

And on the cusp of 36-0.

  69. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:44 pm

Funny how MLB has an article on the top 10 “problems” that need to be fixed at the trading deadline, talking about mostly NL teams. Giants not even mentioned. Maybe they didn’t even know where to start…

  70. Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:44 pm

Very difficult listening to the A’s broadcast crew. It’s easy to get spoiled by Kruk, Kuip and Miller.

    • xoot said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:45 pm

are you suffering through Ray Fosse? he’s the worst

      • Lurker John said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:47 pm

Yeah. I usually watch the Giants feed on my computer, but MLB network has it on TV. He is bad.

  71. zumiee said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:46 pm

In the past, you wanted to get the starter out to get to a team’s bullpen. Now bullpens can be tough to deal with.

  72. willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 8:50 pm

Kid Black has some potential. Since that first night he hasn’t done too bad. Fastball regularly 97 and up.

  73. chipower9 said, on July 21, 2018 at 9:04 pm

    Fucking A Pence!

  74. willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 9:04 pm

unbelievable. foul territory burned A’s big time.

    • willedav said, on July 21, 2018 at 9:07 pm

      1b could have snagged that.

  75. Bozo said, on July 21, 2018 at 9:04 pm

I did not see that coming.
