Who Would You Target?
The Brewers have the second most wins in the NL? Not sure what that says about the NL. I’m not that worried about Milwaukee and I think D-Rod will pitch well enough for us to win tonight. Of course, our hitters look tired and ineffective lately so that could be an issue.
Bill Laskey, who I usually don’t like because he spends most of his show covering for the completely incompetent Vida Blue, brought up a good question on the radio last night: Who would the Giants realistically go after at the trade deadline? They don’t have too many bullets to fire. And if they did fire them, who would they target? The bullpen has been very good this year. Same with the starting pitching. I guess you could go after an outfielder but they can’t even seem to get Slater on the field so that tells me they don’t really want to add on there.
Longo coming back, Panik too. Doesn’t it seem like even if the Giants had a bullet they’d be willing to fire they wouldn’t do it because they don’t have any holes they are desperate to fill?
This would actually be perfect. But how hamstrung will the Giants be about $$$? Jones is a free agent after this season, he’s owned about 7 mil left on his 2018 deal….
yeah thought about this guy for couple years. Seems like the perfect vet fit for Giants mindset–just wonder how well he would hit here. O’s obviously not asking a lot for anyone beyond prospects.
poor man’s Ellis Burks? It would work for me.
Looks like the Giants brought down Facebook.
Didn’t someone here call that a couple days ago?
anything that involves that stupid fuck Zuckerberg losing boatloads of cash is a-ok with me
Longo and Panik are couple guys who haven’t had the seasons Giants expected going in. One will help them vs. LHP, the other won’t.
Looking back at last 2 series, Giants were only barely out bombed. Vs. A’s they gave up no HRs in either of first 2 games and then 4 in the last one (to just 2 guys, 3 off Cueto) and they hit 4 of their own. M’s hit 2 in 2 games, SF 1, by Pence of all people. Most of the games were decided by walks that came around to score.
sure it’s disappointing that most of their hitters including the C are not hitting as many HRs as we’d like but the fact the pitching is limiting them from other teams is significant gain over last season.
And they still can’t hit. They’re 3-5 in their past 8 against the A’s and M’s. With any decent hitting at all they’d likely have won 5 or 6 of those 8. At what point does this franchise start building a competent offensive team? Parts of the pitching have been good, others have not been good. They’re 9th in the 15-team NL in team ERA. That’s not great, that’s mediocre. Even so, with good hitting, something this team hasn’t had in years, they’d be in a lot better position than they are now.
In the WS years their pitching was not middle of the pack, it was utterly dominant, which is why they won despite less than stellar offensive numbers. That’s not the case anymore and it’s not likely to be again anytime soon. Personally, I’m sick of these anemic offensive teams and the pathetic excuses the Giants proffer to give them a pass. Boch needs to strongly consider retirement and Evans needs to be shown the door. He sucks.
You won’t believe who BR lists as the most similar batter to Adam Jones.
Guesses?
Slater? Lqtm
Pence!
Well, they’re having equally pissy seasons, so I can see that.
lol Pence and Jones are having the same seasons? Adam Jones would be a great addition to the team. Him in left, Duggar in CF and Cutch in RF. Make a run this summer, see what happens
No, just pissy. Jones is clearly better, albeit barely given the disparity in number of games played. The guy has 38 ribbies in 96 games. That’s pretty bad. Posey-esque, dare I say.
And what would they have to give up to get him? I’d rather keep Slater than trade him for Jones, if only because he’s younger.
Jones will be 33 years old next week and he’s having a mediocre season. He can stay in Baltimore as far as I’m concerned.
we only need him for 2 months. And getting him out of Baltimore might do a lot for his motivation. I’m guessing things have gotten rather staid around there….
Affeldt on KNBR now, saying SF needs a RH home run hitter, even if Longoria adds more bopperage when he come back, and there is no guarantee of that coming back from a broken hand. Also, confirming Posey just isn’t healthy, has no power…
Posey since AS break: 3 for 20, all singles…
and that’s after a cortisone shot and rest
I highly doubt Jones would waive his no trade to come to SF though so it’s not really worth debating
Why do I think it’ll end up being Adam Duvall? Anything at this point would be better than the limp noodle gang.
This feels like 2008 where we had a team with little power that Bochy refused to manufacture runs with.
Duvall would come here and go straight into the tank. I think he’s highly overrated to begin with.
To LJ’s point this is why I’d trade pitching to acquire hitting, either vet or prospects. Giants farm gets much maligned but the guys brought up this year to help pitching have done very well. Less sure about the hitters, tho Slater hopefully is a keeper. But he’s not a HR threat and Duggar isn’t either.
Cutch hit 28 bombs last year, stuck on 10 right now. He’ll walk and SF will need a replacement who is lot better player than Gorks.
True, there really isn’t one position that management is desperate to change, so it’s tough to peg a possible move. Evans is incapable of pulling off something surprising and interesting, but it would be cool if Sabes pulled off something like that summer trade with the White Sox, ballsy… and of course, Williams for Kent et al. I had just moved to SF when that one happened, what was the discussion about the team at that time? Did anyone see something like that coming?
Getting poor man’s Ellis Burks would be great. Loved that guy, beautiful high finish on his swing.
Snarkk’s post at the end of the last thread compared the Giants and the A’s. The A’s are just across the Bay, having a loosey-goosey fun season with a line-up full of power. Hard not to be envious of their talent.
The Giants do have Rodriguez and Suarez showing us something this season. They’ve been a great story this season.
But that Giants offense….struggling for consistency. Struggling for power.
Mm 2014 pitching wasn’t really dominant, more middle of road 7th in league (Cain and Lincecum 4.00+ ERAs), lot like the hitting that year. Pablo got hot in playoffs, Craw and Belt won early games with bombs and of course bum dominated. guys like Ishi Blanco and Perez were in OF.
In order for Giants to get to middle of pack for runs today they’d have to improve hitting quite a bit. Don’t see that happening in house and Longo Panik won’t do much to move needle either. Hopefully someone gets hot and brings rest of LU along with them.
It was in the playoffs, mostly because of Bum and the pen, but that was definitely the tail-end their run of dominant team pitching. Timely hitting was always the hallmark of those offensive clubs.
How about Archer???? We can trade Stratton, Blach 2-3 other arms (Moronta?) and throw in a Williamson and another non-current big league bat. Smardjam for the bullpen permanently…
To Flav’s point in the last paragraph of this tread, unless they can free up significant money (think Smardj, which is highly inlikely), I do not see them getting someone who will make a huge impact with the inconsistent offense. So, I won’t be surprised if they stand pat.
If they do get someone, they need someone with some pop…probably an OFer, and again, in reading the tea leaves, that just does not seem too likely. Plus, as someone else mentioned, I don’t think Booby has the balls or competence to make something of that magnitude happen.
Hard to know who the club should pursue. I guess Jones would be good but keep in mind that he’s played mostly CF this year and Bochy will just roll out an all geriatric OF of Pence, Jones & McCutchen. Other than the supposedly untouchables, who’s even going to get any kind of value in return? Watson, Dyason, Holland and maybe Stickland? Getting anything in return for Samardzija is Room B nonsense.
I think Baltimore would want Heliot. If Jones waived his no trade would u do.that for 2 mos of Jones? I wouldn’t
Heck no.
Jones will end up in Philly. Heliot has become the one no-trade prospect…the money with the salary cap just does not work on an Adam Jones deal. The Orioles are taking no salary back in any deal….
Hell no. His potential impact doesn’t justify what the Giants would give up, IMO.
Ethier retired. No team wanted him. It’s a tough sabermetric world now.
Yanks trade for Happ.
Yanks are making moves
Getting good grades
The future’s so bright they gotta wear shades
😎
Not sure how Jones grades on Sabevans critical Do Some Damage stat but with a 0.3 WAR, .304 OBP and .727 OPS he would be a very Giantsy pick up.
obviously he’d need to bump production. It’s not the healthiest situation in Baltimore, I imagine a lot of those dudes are just sleep walking the year out.
And, I don’t think he’d want to come here and have to fight the park with his pending free agency. He’d much more prefer staying in the AL and going to Boston or some place like that.
But theoretically I think it would work
Fun fact: Just had my 9th career tooth extraction…
Was it a grand slam?
With or without replacement of some sort?…
Nope just another vacancy.
Down to 23.
I liked when I was balanced – 12/top- 12/bottom.
D-Backs blow the save.
Why Jones? A rental not worth giving up a decent prospect. Instead Giants should roll with playing their own OF prospects to evaluate for impact on off season moves. They have to win the division to get to the playoffs. Slim chance of that….
Belt to the DL with a bum knee.
One way to get him out of a slump…
The good news is Longoria is back!
Also, Stratton back, Specs out.
Specs always gets rear-ended by the Giants…
Sent down two days after 2-3 1 R, 1 RBI. Kinda like Ryder Jones getting sent down after hitting a HR.
Id take a versatile player like KC ‘s RH Whit Merrifield in a heartbeat.Plays 2B/LF has some pop (19bombs last year) has speed good D and since the Royals suck as bad as the Orioles might not take that big of package to get him.,
Slater getting the start at 1st. Giddy up….
1. Chase d’Arnaud (R) 2B
2. Austin Slater (R) 1B
3. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
4. Buster Posey (R) C
5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Hunter Pence (R) LF
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Dereck Rodriguez (R) P
Yeah I’m so giddy that Hunter’s getting a start in Left..🤯😱
Interesting story and fun to watch the Nats forthcoming implosion.
But who would people rather have on the Giants (not that either will even consider coming to ATT), Harper or Machado??? And without consideration of Crawford. Just a straight debate on Harper or Machado. I vote Machado hands down…
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/sports/nationals/the-nationals-must-think-about-the-unthinkable–trading-bryce-harper/2018/07/26/443b061e-90ff-11e8-8322-b5482bf5e0f5_story.html
For me, Harper. We have depth in the IF, but could sorely use an OFer with his stick. There are a number of stories out there that say he likes SF. Whether we get him or not, I am certain the Giants make a hard run at him.
If you access the flap on your pH and scroll down, the masterpiece is pictured right below the most recent comment. That’s my favorite thing about this year so far…..Loo walk me through the 9 tooth extractions. My dad was a dentist for 50 years, maybe I can help. 🙂
No shit? That’s a lot of dentistry.
Flavor…so nice of you to put the Nightmare house (as it’s owner calls it) in such a prestigious place.
Maybe it’ll be lucky for us. We need something!
The 9 extractions were just gradual over the years. First the wisdom teeth had to go, then one by one each back tooth directly in front of them. Today #19 (as your dad would refer to it) departed. It had already had a root canal and a crown so there was nothing left to do but yank it. (TMI yet?) It had been pulling away from the gum on its own and although not painful it was slightly infected and basically a little time bomb. I try to do the right stuff (water pik, floss, sugarless gum), but this is how it’s gone…
Oh, and a box of these a day…

If lm the A’s I would jump on Harper even if he’s a rental.Harper&Davis down the stretch is down right scary with the way Oakland is playing! A’s yeah I’ll say it,can win it all this year, their a solid deep team.Yeah Harper is just a stats man,all about himself, but I think Melvin could turn the light 💡 on his game .I highly respect Melvin as a manager, wish he was the Giants manager going forward!
With you Kat.
I’d love Melvin as Giants manager.
Giants pedigree, national league background, he’s cool managing young players.
Can we trade for him before the deadline? …
I’m down!
Bring Back Bob! Bring Back Bob! Bring Back Bob!
Giants need to win 3 of 4, here. If they lose 3 of 4, IMO they’re done and should be sellers…
Let’s go D-Rod!
Does Rodriguez have a tat of Catwoman on his left arm? Sure looks that way. If so, wonder what the story is there.
he’s apparently really into legos and playing with kids toys and shit. Weird, I know.
When the Giants get a lead off double they usually struggle mightily to get the run in. Brewers get that here, and boom, boom, two quick grounders to the right side, score the run. It’s better talent…
McCutchen is as bad, really worse in than Belt In hitting directly into the shift. And his D is fair to suckage. Dude can go back to the Pirates tomorrow, he would not be missed after a few days…
Kuiper: “Longoria should receive a big ovation from the crowd.”
The Crowd: (nothing)
lulz!
Then he got a hit and the crowd gave him an ovation.
that WAS pretty funny
Lulz.
Knowledgeable crowd tonight.
It’s one thing to root for laundry.
But, it’s another to root for laundry that’s barely been worn…
That was the first time I have seen Duggar at bat besides in Richmond couple years ago (nothing stood out then), that was a great, patient at-bat…
Buster misread that by about 60′. WTF? 3 DPs in 4 innings.
The sluggin’ G-Men strike again.
a succesful bunt!!! huzzah!
Hung that lollipop 🍭
But Catwoman is still nails in my book!
You got one with Eartha Kitt?
That is one nice set of hips.
Giants sure missed the boat on the Miami fire sale…
The Giants don’t need offense, they’re a pitching team.
Duggar boned the shit out of that one.
I can’t tell which part of the rugby field Duggar missed that diving catch.
Yeah, the field is kind of screwy looking.
I was gonna say, Mac, WTF is wrong with the field? Its trashed.
DR0d hung a lot of shit that inning. Lucky we didn’t fall behind.
Rugby tournament last weekend. I knew it’d screw up the field.
And this is after a lot of repair work was done to the field.
Liked Chi said,
It’s Harper if we can get him.Not only will he fill the now empty seats with his swagger, he’s a legit# 4 power hitterand RBI producer this team doesn’t have, and all teams know that.
If they want to hang with the power clubs you have to start matching them,,
You get baggage with Harper, that’s the only thing.
I’ll take the baggage if he produces.Bonds had more baggage than anyone, and he produced, even if he was a cancer in the clubhouse..
It ain’t Puig baggage.
Exactly.
Cutch is as damn near worthless as MINAJ at this point. 5 RBIs in July. And his defense has fallen off a cliff.
I’d dump him in a heartbeat at the deadline if somebody would eat half his salary…
Hader coming in for his round of boos from the fan.Guy sure has taken his share of shit .,
He did Nazi that coming.
whoosh 98 and a K from the Mountain
Pence can see what happened to Werth and Ethier. Ain’t nobody gonna sign you, dude.
Gorkys is experiencing the cruel fate of mathematical regression.
Melonhead is giving me no confidence.
Like I’ve said before, I loved the Melancon signing and I’m pulling hard for the guy, but he doesnt have much out there. A 91 mph heater, a curve, and guts and guile. Has to hit his spots or it aint gonna be pretty.
Catwoman = Julie Newmar now well into her 80s. Web photos show she looks pretty good for that age.
Not as good as 50+ years ago in that leather suit, though…
😻😻🙀😺
You don’t have to give in. You don’t have to give in. Melonhead gives in.
I’m tired of this $64 million Phuck.
Why is he pitching again in high leverage situation in the 8th?
No excuses of seeing eye crap. He’s paid to get outs. And, he’s not getting outs.
Bust city…
Bochy loves him some Melancon.
Fans Booing this Phuck after the 2nd run allowed, and likely giving away the game.
DL this guy already…
Whatever Krukow, stop sucking major pole for Melonoma who sucks!!
Looks like we are sellers. We aren’t getting away from the pull of mediocrity.
Yeah but who do we have to sell that anyone wants??
Crawfish, Panik. Bummie. Watson.
Nothing but ropes off this chump!!
A walk, and more Booing.
Well deserved. He likely just blew the game.
I saw that crap live last Sunday.
Sorry, but this guy has been a total Bust.
And, Bochy is now feeding the usual “big contract, play him” menu.
On Sabean…
The galling thing is just that, Boch sticking with Pence while Slater sits, Melonhead, Smargle, and now Cutch is hologramming himself to oblivion as we speak.
The worst case scenario is playing itself out.
About 5 batters to late Boch, thank you,go fill up your wine cup again..
This might be a little unrealistic, but I sometimes think Slater could develop into a Lou Piniella caliber of player. Give you good at bats, hit .280, good fielder, smart player. Good type of player to have in our ballpark as presently situated.
“That gal can easily plant a mustache farm with Smardxx,Melonoma,Pence,MIAJ,Gearrin “
Cutch of course, asleep at the switch.
Jesus Christ . The DP is going to happen if they don;t send Cutch
Lucked ouf there. And O. M. G! They pinch run for leadfoot.
We’d have a RISP if Cutch isn’t sleeping on 1st.
Keep sipping that wine Boch, don’t worry about sending your fastest runner (Hanson) in a 1 run game late to scoring position..
Would be tied now if Boch pulled his head ass
and let Hanson steal 2nd,,
They won’t score now for sure with Pence up, such a waste..
Krukow: “Pence will give you a spirited at-bat.”
His at-bats tonight have been dispiriting, actually.
SanDog, yeah, I agree, Slater should be playing, and every day at that….
