And….We Suck

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 28, 2018

It’s not even August and I’m already tired of this team. Boring. Slow. Weak. The pitching is better than last season but the hitting feels like it’s settled into last year’s squad. We’ve been lulled into a mild sense of belief just because they haven’t been on pace to lose 98 games. But .500 ball is nearly as bad. They are more competitive than last year but there is just a huge gap between how they play the game and how the rest of baseball plays the game.

I had secretly hoped that The Masterpiece would have acted as “Rally! Masterpiece!” but who was I kidding? It’s a house where people went to die…..

It’s time to wave the white flag on this season. Feel free to join me, it’ll make watching this shit a lot easier to tolerate……

like I said yesterday making the next move from middle of pack to the top is gonna be lot harder than getting from the bottom to the middle. Taking a look at the WC standings on B/R, one of the teams near SF already fired a mgr and I bet Nats would have too if they hadn’t just hired new guy this year.

Hey did anyone hear anything about the yard from locals–Pavs Baggs yada yada? Never noticed how funky field looks until last night tho LJ had brought it up earlier. Ownership put the kibosh on saying anything about the field except for Kruk gushing about the great job by grounds crew? Imagine what it looked like before that. ugh.

  2. willedav said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:09 am

Here’s a contrasting stat—top 3 teams in NL West, LA AZ Rox are all at least 7 games over .500 on the road and LA is now 30-22. Giants 11 games under at 21-32 and home record taking a little beating lately too.

  3. gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:27 am

Was that Busted Posey weakly grounding out to third with bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th????

I have not been paying attention to Bochy’s overall record but it is now 3 games under .500. I pray they play 4 over .500 ball the rest of the year so he can drift off into the sunset.

    • willedav said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:34 am

yes same guy who doubled and scored their only run. Also same guy who went 2-3 night before with BB scored 1 drove in 1.

      • gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:09 am

But nothing clutch that I have seen in weeks…when it came time for a big hit to tie the game, he grounds out weakly. Earlier double and run when the game is 0-0 is fairly meaningless…

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 10:15 am

      Busted Posey. LOL

    • Jon R. Weeks said, on July 28, 2018 at 10:29 am

It’s time for him to leave now…..

      • djloo27 said, on July 28, 2018 at 10:57 am

        Great idea!
Why don’t you give him a call and see if he’s open to walking away from the $70 million he has coming to him?
I miss Twin more than ever at moments like this…

  4. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:50 am

Bochy gets the record he gets. He is part of the problem now. He refuses to hit and run and manufacture runs and instead waits for the home run that never comes. He’s on autopilot. He needs to go.

I was hoping the A’s would get tired of Melvin but with their roaring success that’s not gonna happen. Decker was the guy I thought they were grooming but he dropped off the planet. aybe they can just sign a random ex-player. Jeff Kent, come on down! He’s a fiery in-your-face guy the kids need. It would be something to see, anyway. This team is as boring as fuck right now. And don’t kid yourself. These guys could go right back down to the 90 loss territory.

    • gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:10 am

Totally agree…my interest is Flav level bordering on disinterest…

  5. willedav said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:56 am

reading story on cbs site about Yanks and replacements for A Judge, B Olney mentions Cutch if Giants were selling…would that blast he hit off the wall for double the other night be a bomb in NY? wonder if he could turn it on in that yard for them over last couple months of season.

Also love to be fly on the wall next year when a teammate on whomever he’s playing for asks about playing at ATT. KNBR guys complained about how cold it was the other night, end of july when it’s 85 degrees half hour south or east of yard and 100 lot of other places. I’d guess night games there a rude awakening.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:01 am

It is pretty brutal I must say. Although I just think that’s me getting older. Seattle has much the same weather.

    • gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:11 am

Fantastic potential to get him to the Yanks. What level prospect would they give up? Probably not much…

  6. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:58 am

Yeah, the team is fading into the background of my daily life. I saw the 9th inning of yesterday’s game and wasn’t disappointed by the blehhh they]ve become. If management doesn’t care, why should I?

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 11:56 am

Especially with the 49ers starting to spool up. Waaaay more interesting things happening in SC these days. I’ll set aside the perpetual heartache that is the Giants and go with the exciting football team for $100, Alex.

  7. gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:07 am

After hitting his 23rd home run last night, Nelson Cruz now has 149 over the last 4 years. I’m not going to look it up but will guess 149 is easily twice as many as any Giant has hit hit over the last 4 years.

He was easily acquirable back in 2015 and maybe is the difference maker in our 2016 season and obviously would been hugely impactful this year.

I read back through my earlier post couple days ago about building a speed team ala 80s Cards to counter the current game of strike out, strike out, home run, strike out, strike out, home run had picked up some agreement outside of Flav.

We can’t get power hitters as free agents and obviously not producing any consistent ones in-house, would be easier to rebuild around speed, defense and pitching…anyone else have a comment about trying to trade for Archer???

He has 3 team option years of $7.5, $9 and $11 mill. Very reasonable contract. With Bum likely getting his $12 mill option next year, payroll will be roughly $137 mill. Archer takes them to $145. Leaving us $55 mill to replace McCutch and other holes.

We are stuck with 2 more years of Smadjam and Melancant and we can’t do anything about it. Bury them in the pen and have a rotation of Bum, Cueto, Archer, Suarez and Pudge Jr.

How can the Ray’s say no to 8-9 prospects with two potential starters in Stratton and Blach??? We got snookered on taking Longoria’s contract off their hands. They owe us…

  8. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:13 am

Pitching isn’t this team’s problem. As yesterday showed, and plenty of other games, you don;t score you don;t win. They can go after free agents next year. Like Harper. No way in hell I’d blow up the farm for a middling starter. Shit, he’s 54-68. His era is OK, and so is his whip, but he’s a 3 at best. You want to give up 8-9 prospects for him?

And the Rays don’t owe us shit. Our stupidity doesn’t behoove them to deal with us. Better they try to fuck us over again.

  9. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 9:26 am

Not that they’d ever ask me, but this team needs to just play Duggar and Slater, bench Pence forever, and send Smargle to the hinterlands of the garden. Deal Cutch and Smargle for a bag of balls and some fungo bats, deal Panik for whatever, and play out the string. They can get s jump on next year’s re(build)tool and get a sense of what they have when September call-ups happen. Longo? Fuck, I don’t know. He goes at next year’s trade deadline if he does anything,

With the injury to Judge, I could see Cutch to the Yanks, who I think still have a ton of rain outs to make up.

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:04 pm

Suarez has been equally as good, imo, though his numbers aren’t quite there.

  21. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:03 pm

I’ve said for several years now that Bochy manages like Earl Weaver — pitch well, wait for a 3 run homer. Well, I don’t see Frank Robinson and Boog Powell anywhere around here the last few years. He has an aversion to manage to manufacture runs. When it fails on the rare occasion he tries it, he goes back to the old 3-run homer management that doesn’t work with his roster. Anyway, is Bochy to the HOF overblown? I guess he gets the golden ticket for the 3 trophies. But, he had great pitching and a great Pen for the first two. You can be a Penmaster when the Pen is masterful. When the Pen has rag arms, you’re a janitor manager. In 2014, maybe that was his best job — a trophy out of a pretty marginal team…

    • Flavor said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:14 pm

his use of Lincecum in 2012 was brilliant. I think he deserves to be in the HOF for his career work and the 3 beauties

Awesomely written, BF. Made me laugh in a poignant sort of way.

  24. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:27 pm

Oh people, please don’t use the phrase “Busted Posey.” It was used on the Splash by Dodger and A’s trolls whenever Posey had an injury, especially when his leg was broken. It just brings back (to me) memories of those trolls on the Splash, and how they destroyed that forum.
But, hey, you have the freedom to say what you want. I definitely don’t want to limit any Flapper’s free speech.

  25. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Bochy is a slam-dunk for the Hall of Fame. The 3 championships, plus the Padres making it to the World Series, plus his career win total.
Every other manager with at least 3 championships is in the Hall of Fame.

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:34 pm

He should make it on the first ballot.

  26. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:40 pm

And, it would be fine to see him retire after this season…

    • Flavor said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:43 pm

exactly. And two things can be true: he deserves to be in the HOF and it’s time for him to hang it up

    • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:54 pm

If Bobby Cox is in, Bochy is a shoe in…

  27. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 12:43 pm

The Giants are hamstrung by the lux tax. So, any move they make can’t be very significant.
To really make some material move, they have to offload a ton of salary somehow…

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 1:17 pm

That’s a problem of their own making. That’s the main reason Evans should be canned, imo.

  28. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 1:49 pm

The club Bochy should manage is the Doghairs.
With their offensive firepower, his by the book unimaginative game management plus vaunted pitching management would probably push them to win the Series…

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 2:03 pm

Those were the days….there were some big HRs in the Giants’ playoff runs in ’10, ’12, and ’14.
Just off the top of my head:
-Uribe vs. Phillies, Game 6 ’10
      -Renteria ’10 WS HR
-all those HRs Ross hit in the ’10 playoffs
      -Posey GS vs. Reds ’12
      -Pablo 3-HR WS game ’12
      -Belt vs. Nats ’14
      -Morse vs. Cards ’14
      -Ishi vs. Cards ’14
-Pence Game 1 vs. Royals ’14

  29. YogiBarrister (@Yogi47951368) said, on July 28, 2018 at 1:55 pm

There’s still some entertainment value left in the regular season. True, the Giants chances of making the playoffs are virtually nil, but it’s possible they could go 34-23 the rest of the way to go ten games over.
It’s back to plan A, win a wild card slot. They have to finish ahead of the D-Backs and Rockies (-4.5 games), obviously. Figure either the Cubs or Brewers for one WC slot, so that leaves the Cards, Pirates?, and two out of three of the not terrible NL East teams.
So in effect, the Gianrs are battling for second in the NL West, NL East, and third in the NL Central.
It’s like those games where the Giants are down a few runs in the ninth. You figure for sure they’ll lose, but if they can just get the tying run to the plate…who knows, maybe Alen Hanson hits a HR.

  30. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2018 at 1:59 pm

I wouldn’t even pin this on Evans, LJ. He is constrained by the Charlie Johnsons of the team. The prime directive is to not go over the cap. Granted we overpaid for guys, but we did make moves. I certainly didn’t think Cutch would be a festering offensive turd who forgot how to catch balls, and that Longo would get hurt every other 2 weeks, but that is what transpired. They were decent enough moves. MINAJ turned out like he did, and Melonhead/Smargle are 2 bigger ooopsies, but, well, fuck it. You’re right. Can his ass!

    • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 2:08 pm

I seriously doubt any move made by Evans was not vetted and approved personally by Sabean. Sabes wasn’t out all the time at some junior college field in Florida watching 19 year olds. This mess is on both of them, and Baer.
How can the Yanks and BoSox who print and spend money like drunken sailors continue to buy seemingly whatever pieces they need before the deadline, and sign FA studs like JD Martinez and Stanton? Compare the Giants who also print money. They end up playing dudes like Gorkys, Duggar and Slater — making chicken feed salaries –yet the Giants still have their nose up against the lux tax line? Friggin’ malpractice faceplant by the Giants management…

      • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 3:05 pm

The Giants in the last few years became a cautionary tale for other teams. Stop signing declining players to expensive long contracts.

And you can add the freakin Dodgers too! Hey Seager goes down, no problem ,we’re just get Machado for not even their top prospects! And I say he won’t just be a rental,Dodgers will lock him, they will move Turner to 2nd, he’s played their before..

    Who are you kidding Snarkk?
Yeah we’re all gonna go with the 3 beauties for Bochy over 1 for Cox But Bochy can’t sniff Cox’s jock strap after that.,
Bobby Cox career managerial record 2,504-2,001,555 pct, 15 division titles including 11 straight!!!
Bochy..career managerial record 1,905-1908 under .500 and will drop more..6 division titles. Not even close 600 more wins, yeah if you want to beat him down for only1W/S title to Bochy’s 3 so be it , but that’s all Boch has on him..

    • djloo27 said, on July 28, 2018 at 3:34 pm

The problem is he always gets hurt around the trade deadlines, so now nobody wants are “damaged goods” and I don’t believe you can trade a guy while he’s on the DL..

  37. alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 5:46 pm

Wow I just can’t believe the Giants didn’t sign Matt Holliday, he just signed a minor league deal back with the Rockies!

  38. Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 5:48 pm

I’m not trying to pin the whole thing on Evans, Chuck, but it’s the quality of the moves I have issue with, not that they made them. They clearly needed to after the 98 loss debacle. As snarkk said, Sabean is every bit as culpable as Evans is. I say send them both packing.

At the end of the day, I think a hungry, smart younger guy, a la Theo Epstein, is what the Giants need to bring in. I know they don’t grow on trees, but their current style of baseball management is all but obsolete at this point and it’s just not working. Does anyone really have confidence that they’ll do any better next year putting together a team? I don’t.

Scouting and development has also been a big problem and we haven’t had enough time to see if bringing in David Bell is going to start paying dividends. That area just takes time to rebuild. As for Bochy, I just feel like he’s near the end of his career. The idea of getting Melvin sounds good, but how would they pry him away from the A’s? Would Wotus be a good candidate? I really don’t know. Decker was mentioned earlier today, but we haven’t heard hide nor hair of him in quite a while.

The Giants need to start getting younger (and more talented), on the field and in the FO. Just my $.02.

    • alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 5:58 pm

Wotus will never be a manager!!!!
He’s been passed over like moldy bread 🍞 at a dinner table by every team he’s interviewed with.. Giants will stick with him cause they don’t know any better.
Hey might as well let him be the hitting coach next, cause we sure have 2 headed chimpanzees doing it now..

I’ve been watching the Mets-Pirates broadcast on MLB and the Mets announcers said that the Brewers acquired Moustakis with the idea of moving Travis Shaw to second base, a position he’s never played professionally, and plugging Moustakis in at third. If that doesn’t work, they’ll move Shaw back and put Moustakis at second. Talk about some questionable deadline moves.

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:14 pm

I think their analytics says it’s OK. The Dodgers started Muncy at second quite a bit. He was OK. His offense outweighed (literally) his defensive liabilities.

      • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:25 pm

That’s probably it. Potential offensive benefits outweigh any defensive liabilities.

  40. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:10 pm

  41. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:10 pm

Off-season and now, Brewers pick up Cain, Mustakis, and Yelich.
Giants pickup Actionless (already traded away that cost SF a decent SJ pitcher prospect to unload him), McCutchen and Longo.
Yikes, no doubt who wins that comparison…

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:18 pm

Trades circle back to our weak farm system. Our prospects haven’t been enticing to other teams.

  42. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:15 pm

WTF is McCutchen doing on that delayed steal?
    Dumb…

  43. Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:16 pm

Cutch is also an excellent baserunner.

  44. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:20 pm

K&K tried to give him cover, but it was terrible.

3-0 too early to mail this one in?

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:36 pm

      What, with our high-powered offense?

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:37 pm

Why not, the Giants are playing like they’re mailing it in.

  49. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:53 pm

Is this kind of sleep-inducing ball worthy of paying $13 for a pint of Lagunitas, or $19 for a 22 ounce?
I have no doubt the answer is no…

  50. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:56 pm

How can Vogie get a plaque on the Wall of Fame before Timmy ?
I have to assume they asked Timmy and he said, “maybe later.” That better be the case…

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:59 pm

They wait for the official retirement of the player. Timmy is technically a free agent right now.

      • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:01 pm

        OK, that’s good. Thanks, zum…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:01 pm

Didn’t they reach out to Bowker about his plaque?

  51. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 6:57 pm

    This one is looking nasty.
    Cueto is no bueno, again…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:06 pm

Should of shit canned the season and had the TJ surgery..Losing faith in Dr.Andrews, but he’ll he has to be in his high 80’s maybe demitna is setting in.

  52. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:01 pm

The Braves got their terrible Alex Wood trade shoved right in their face today.

  53. alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:10 pm

This has the makings of a no-hitter..

  54. willedav said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:13 pm

the words are barely out of Kruk’s mouth..”he’s transitioned very well to the bullpen” and Yelich homers off Blach on the second pitch he sees.
    Can’t make this stuff up.

    • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:27 pm

He smokes pole all game long, every game, so it’s bound to happen with some frequency…

  55. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:14 pm

I can’t see McCutchen getting much of a contract from anyone next season.
Maybe 2 years/$15 million or so.

  56. willedav said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:15 pm

Brewers providing clinic on how to score runs this series. Couple bombs moving runners over stealing bags sac flies yada yada.

    The Giants’ theme song tonight:

When I’m in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)
Please, don’t wake me, no, don’t shake me
Leave me where I am, I’m only sleeping

  58. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:26 pm

  59. Macdog said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:29 pm

The Brewers have 12 hits. The Giants have none. We have now reached complete unwatchability.

  60. Flavor said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:29 pm

there is now a very solid chance that the 3 hits I gave this LU @5:11pm is gonna be a reach…..

I like my chances with my 7:10 post!!
Betting windows are now open Flappers..

  61. zumiee said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:31 pm

Now we get K&K rambling about the food at the ballpark for the rest of the game. Baseball’s equivalent of garbage time.

  62. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:31 pm

I’m with Kat. I would not be surprised if Cueto hits the DL after this game. He had nothing. Could be a TJ’s in his future. If he needs it, no use waiting around, get it done…

  63. snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:36 pm

Barring a miracle, Giants lose this one and that’s losing 3 of 4 in the series. I said before the series that if they did that, they were done. I’m prepared to call the season over for playfoffs if this one ends in a loss. This squad sucks dong; it will be 2-6 after the AS game…

  64. Bozo said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:39 pm

    Goodbye no hitter.

  65. Macdog said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:39 pm

One down, two hits to go.

  66. alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:45 pm

It’s not a difficult job Krukow being a 3B coach, “IT STARTS WITH RUNNERS ON BASE”Wotus doesn’t need to do anything except adjust his cup with this team..

  67. gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:47 pm

I am going online and putting some money down on the Brewers to win the world series at 30-1 and to face the Astros at 35-1.

They have built one hell of a bullpen and imagine if they can add Dozier at second….this is a butt kicking that they are administering to us. Their bullpen is potentially as dominate as the Giants had in 2010 that helped lead us to our first SF Championship. Gives me someone to root for now this season…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:50 pm

I might throw some coin on the A’s.No team wants to face them in the playoffs..

  68. alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:48 pm

Smart baserunning there Duggar, Down 5??
Yeah that will put you on the end of the bench tomorrow, and unfortunately give Pence another start..

    • Macdog said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:56 pm

Normally I’d agree, but this offense is so fucking impotent, why not take a chance and try a steal down 6-1? It’s not like Crawford was gonna hit a bomb.

  69. wilcojoe said, on July 28, 2018 at 7:55 pm

The Brewers GM is David Stearns who previously was assistant GM for the Astros under Jeff Luhnow. If the Giants were smart they would go after Mike Elias the current second in command to Luhnow.

    • Lurker John said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:58 pm

        NOW!

  70. gianthead said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:00 pm

Message back to Chuck about the idea of 8-9 prospects for Archer. I’m not talking about Yankee or Dodger level prospects but the mediocre ones we have!!! Blach and Stratton are not going to be starters for us long-term nor Beede at this point.

Williamson is likely a DH level possibility…better suited to the AL. What else we would put in that type of deal is just low-grade prospects that are replete in our farm system…Heliot is the only super plus prospect at this point. Archer also potentially steps into Cueto’s spot if the speculation about an arm injury is serious.

Lock up pitching with Archer’s reasonable contract and then add potential slugging big bats via free agency that we seem lacking an ability to develop internally.

  71. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:00 pm

Just curious, but does anyone know the contract situations for Bochy and Evans? Team made all those *coaching* moves in the off-season, but they may have been looking at the wrong contracts, or maybe it was just a start…. well, hopeful thinking.

    • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:06 pm

Bochy has a deal through 2019.
Sabes I think is signed same term as Bochy.
      Evans, I dunno…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:20 pm

I’m guessing Bochy (and obviously the front office) is a bit stubborn and “early retirement” (like, at the end of this year, not waiting until next year) won’t be seriously considered. If I was Boch, I think I would just admit it’s over, don’t need this shit, where’s my fishing rod….

    • Bozo said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:34 pm

Per Cot’s Contracts, Bochy and Sabean are both signed through 2019. Evans just says 2015 -, which I assume is a year to year contract (2015 is when he got the promotion to GM and Sabean was promoted to executive VP). At the start of this year Evans leash was shorten when Sabean was asked to get more involved with the GM duties.

I’m looking at the list of free agents and outside of Harper (and we ain’t getting him) for 2019 it is a whole lotta shit…how depressing. Not getting out of this for a couple of years…Mike Trout for $400 mill anyone???

    • snarkk said, on July 28, 2018 at 8:36 pm

I would take Trout over Harper, not even close…
