And….We Suck
It’s not even August and I’m already tired of this team. Boring. Slow. Weak. The pitching is better than last season but the hitting feels like it’s settled into last year’s squad. We’ve been lulled into a mild sense of belief just because they haven’t been on pace to lose 98 games. But .500 ball is nearly as bad. They are more competitive than last year but there is just a huge gap between how they play the game and how the rest of baseball plays the game.
I had secretly hoped that The Masterpiece would have acted as “Rally! Masterpiece!” but who was I kidding? It’s a house where people went to die…..
It’s time to wave the white flag on this season. Feel free to join me, it’ll make watching this shit a lot easier to tolerate……
It would be easier to sell rebuild to the fans with a new young manager. A total house-clean.
I’ve never been a “trade Bum” guy, but I’m starting to weaken on that. For one thing, it would be fun to see him pitching in the playoffs, even for another team. His playoff aura makes him desirable to teams, plus one more year of team-friendly contract. He should get a decent return.
Obviously not traded to the Dodgers, though.
He just pitched 8 very good innings, had his control.
If he’s on the Yanks, he probably goes 8-2 the rest of the season…
The trade is a good fit, but it goes against every fiber in Baer’s body. At his core, Baer is a marketing guy. He got his start selling season tickets for the Giants.
A Lexington lawyer I know is on one of those visit-every-mlb-ballpark-in-the-country trips and Thursday night was his stop in SF. He enjoyed the grand tour. A well-timed climb to the Splash Cam probably did him in. Late sun on both spans of the bridge, the small boats and huge freighters on the Bay, the Oakland hills, etc. This is the view from the cheap seats. The moon rises right over there.
Back down in his field club seats we ordered two crab sandwiches and two beers from the travelling attendant. ($65, before tips.) I looked around at the gathering crowd and suddenly remembered a DJLoo post from years ago. He’d attended a Giants game at Shea and found Peter Magowan sitting near him. Similar behind the dugout seats, I guess. DJLoo said that upon approach Magowan was very gracious. I thought about that old post because I noticed that right across the aisle from me sat Bobby Evans and Dick Tidrow. Evans wore one of his WS rings. Both of them also wore sour, annoyed looks as they watched the end of BP. Unhappy doesn’t begin to cover it. By the time they finally rose and walked down into the tunnel they looked even more malcontent.
I can imagine DJLoo thanking Magowan for his leadership role in everything good that occurred after 1992. Easy conversation to have back in 2008 or 2009. If the Giants were in first place right now, maybe I could’ve given Evans and Tidrow some thanks too for the way their many off-season moves worked out. But, of course: no such luck. I decided that I would gain nothing by saying you know the season ticket holders I usually sit with up in view box think you’ve screwed this team completely and all the fans on the blogs call you fucking idiots. I just saw no reason to breach civility in that way. I certainly didn’t want to upset my Lexington host; and, to be honest,Tidrow, old as he is, still looks like one tough motherfucker.
I don’t see this team bouncing back this season. Evans and Tidrow don’t really look like survivors, either.
Great post; thanks for sharing that story.
Yeah, great story.
Awesome memory by you Xoot. This was the game:

It was a brutally hot weekday afternoon. Zito was awful. I did have a pleasant little chat with Magowan and just as you remembered, he was very gracious. He actually apologized for the way the Giants were playing. When I posted about it, Twin had one of the funniest remarks ever. This is as close as I can remember it:
“So you’re telling us that Magowan was wandering around the stadium apologizing to midgets?”
great stories from both you guys. Love the box, thx loo.
zito had an ERA over 5.00 in July and Jose Castillo had 13 errors. Some great names in there too including the gang leader. Osiris Matos?
I was at this game too, my last at Shea, though I don’t think Magowan made a visit to the upper level.
This game was an embarrassment.
They’ve cratered since the AS break
7 1/2 out of the division lead.
I’m calling it. No playoffs for this team.
If the Giants give up at the deadline a prospect or two for some rental player of B quality, that’s insane.
Imagine blowing $500+ on Club level tix and food for 4 at this POS. Wow, I would not be pleased.
Dump McCutchen, bring up Shaw,
And, sell, sell, sell…
“Sell! sell! sell!”, I keep picturing Ralph Bellamy’s character in Trading Places as he watches his storied brokerage firm go down in flames over orange juice futures. Or maybe I’m just picturing Boch and Sabes sitting in Bochy’s office after another loss playing “Glory Days” on their boombox over and over again.
First game back, Puig HRs.
Post game radio?
Kruk and Kuip talking about the earlier Cain, the Beard, and Vogie wall of Fame celebration.
Tonight’s game? Not in the discussion…
Latest from clubhouse:
Cueto has elbow pain…
and a weak fast ball
Well, Cueto being done would certainly further confirm your call of Giants being done this season.
Cueto just said through his translator that he’s toast. His elbow is hurting. It’s pretty fucked up that the Giants are trotting his ass out there when he’s in pain every pitch he threw. Turned on the game for 30 seconds, and I was right about the blow out. Wrong about who did what, but . . .
God, please trade Cutch. For anything. This is going down like last year. We were good for a while, but the wheels are off. There is no reason to trot out Pence, Smargle, and Melonhead. They need to play the young guys.
Giants just wasted two months of rehab time for a Cueto TJ surgery. I’d like to know what Andrews told them about the elbow…
Cutch to Yanks–I was thinking maybe he makes a turnaround like Madlock did and helps lead them all the way.
Silver lining to all the injuries are the young guys who have provided most of spark so far.
Cutch and Bum to the Yanks for a truckload of minor leaguers.
Baer couldn’t bear it, though.
I would get out the Saran Wrap for that.
Won’t happen…
Bochy was asking the scribes tonight at the presser for suggestions about how to get some offense.
Either hitting bottom, or that’s some not bad Bochy humor…
Fire your hitting coaches would be a start..
NY Post reporting that Giant scouts among others were at Yankee games yesterday.
Also announced the passing of Tony Cloninger – a name of infamy in Giant history if you remember July 3, 1966…
