ROY Freebie

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 13, 2018

If I told you that the only thing you could take from this season was the surprise of Dereck Rodriguez, would that be enough for you? I’m not talking about one of these *Stratton/Suarez* fliers that work out a little and then fall apart, I’m talking about a legit ace of the staff. A free ace can’t be understated.

We’re still screwed going forward because one or two aces isn’t gonna get ‘er done. After him and Bum we just have a bunch of guys (assuming Smargerine is done and we don’t see Cueto till 2020).

That’s the problem with building a staff. Nobody wants to give out the big 5 year deals anymore and I get that. But it’s not like there are any low hanging fruit freebies like D-Rod out there.

And then there is the unpleasant thought that maybe Rodriguez is a mirage. That this will all flitter away into a warm summer breeze and never be seen again…

Fixing this mess is going to require a lot of luck. How many times does a lotto winner hit the lotto? D-Rod could be it and then nothing but a bunch of losing tickets thereafter….

One thing about Sat game is that the Kelley kid looked pretty good. Giants might have something with the SP they got from Sox in the Nunez deal, Anderson who was promoted from Richmond to Sac while ago.
Going forward the whole Blach Suarez Strat thing behind Holland Bum DRod leaves lot to be desired.

Interested to see how Giants all LHP rotation fares vs. Dodgers, who beefed up with Dozier and Machado and have Turner back now too.

Just a thought, but would Astros be a fit for Posey? He’s a better C than McCann and could certainly help their LU. And maybe no one would care how many HRs he hits.

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:39 am

McCann isn’t even playing anymore, I think he’s hurt. Posey would be an upgrade over Gattis or Maldonado or whoever they’re using but my gut is that a team like Houston isn’t going to want to commit tons of salary to a guy who would probably be the 7th or 8th best hitter in the line up day in and day out.

      • Flavor said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:40 am

aside from the dough tho, I think Posey would be a fantastic fit for them

Watching end of Nats Cubs, meetings on the mound, guys nodding their heads and then boom game ova.
And it happened before that to Maddon when Nats scored twice after he walked Harper to load bases.

Blown save almost happened to Watson too and Rox have had all kinds of problems despite all the $$$ they spent off season. See how Roberts handles things without Jansen for at least next week. so far not so good.

  3. alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:29 am

I don’t see Catwoman being a “One hit wonder” this guy has unbelievable control for a Rook.Posey are Hundley sets their target and he’s spot on most of the time. He elevated pitches, he changes the sightlines of hitters constantly, he just light years better then most Rook pitchers…

    • alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:33 am

Should also have a few more wins, been Cained by the pen.8-1 easily maybe 9 . Probably lose out the ROY to Soto? It’s a shame but east coast bias will prevail..

  4. snarkk said, on August 13, 2018 at 10:25 am

I don’t care right now about the pitching. It’s good enough. This team can’t hit. It hasn’t hit for two seasons. The core position players are getting no younger. You can trot Bum out there every 5th day, D-Rod every 5th day and get 7 shutout innings. That’s meaningless if you score 1 or two runs, and the Pen isn’t absolute nails, there is no margin for Pen error. We’ve seen enough how this scenario happens, it sucks. Blow this puppy up to get people that can hit and hit with power. It will take time. MLB is a power game now; you are nowhere if you can’t hit HRs. That’s where the Giants are and will be for the next 2-3 years…

    • alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2018 at 10:29 am

Maybe the hitters need to drink more whiskey 🥃

    • snarkk said, on August 13, 2018 at 11:02 am

      Couldn’t hurt.
Giants HRs now 14 of 15 in the NL. Only the gutted Marlins are worse.
Giants OPS now at 12 of 15.
Giants runs scored at 12 of 15.
Giants staff ERA at 9 of 15.
Giants defense: errors per total chances at 9 of 15.
If they had better power numbers, they’d be clearly better than the current .500 hovering team…

Gotta give props to the Panda this year. Not only did he do everything the Giants asked of him, he played a part in getting Rodriguez to sign with SF.

the hitting we all knew was a problem going in.. Belt will help a little unless he trips over the chalk line in the on-deck circle. He’s coming back Tuesday according to the interwebs.

The defense is a bit of a shocker though. Crawfish has been inconsistent lately, Longo is clanging shit all the time, and Cutch of course is shit in RF.

Can’t say enough about the importance of this series. Until one of these 3 teams runs away, we are still in it. We have a bunch of games with the 3 teams in front of us, so let’s get on that roll everyone keeps hoping for.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2018 at 1:48 pm

You have to have round tires to roll. The Giants are square, just don’t see a roll with this bunch..

In a Bum/Kershaw match-up, it’s always interesting to see what the homeplate ump is going to give to each pitcher.
Kershaw needs that fastball a few inches off the outside of the plate to right-handed hitters to be called a strike.
And Bum needs that wrap-around curve for strikes to right-handed hitters. Sometimes Bum doesn’t get that curveball called strikes, and that’s when he starts to get irritated.
9 times out of 10 Kershaw gets that fastball off the plate called for a strike. The umps like Kershaw. That’s just the way it is. Who knows why? Maybe he never complains and they like him for that. But why should he complain? He gets a big strikezone. It’s a chicken and egg thing. Hard to tell which came first.

That ’82 Giants team was entertaining.

  15. zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 4:54 pm

I was wrong. I really thought Bochy would go Pence in left tonight. Bummer for Pence. Pretty embarrassing.
But as was mentioned the other day- any of us would put up with a lot of embarrassment for $18 million.

  16. zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 4:55 pm

Duggar will struggle to make any contact against Kershaw tonight.

    • zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 4:58 pm

New York Post writer Joel Sherman, looking to dump Jay Bruce on the Giants for Melancon.
The money matches up pretty close. I’d do it…

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:27 pm

pffftttt whenever the topic is traded one bad deal for another I lose interest. You’re just trading for another guy who can’t help you. I think he’s got a Posey hip, too, right?

      • djloo27 said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:37 pm

Yeah, he’s got some injury. The truth is trading a bad contract for a bad contract hardly ever happens.
I can’t even come up with one off the top of my head…

      • sandog said, on August 13, 2018 at 7:24 pm

        Edgardo Alfonso for Steve Finley?

    • blade3colorado said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:39 pm

I read the article Loo. Quite entertaining – a half dozen plus trades he threw out there. Now, I have irrefutable proof that Joel Sherman is Giant Head.

    • Bozo said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:41 pm

Melancon has a full no-trade contract and Jay Bruce has a limited no-trade, he can block 5 teams. I’d bet that trade doesn’t happen and I’m OK with that

  19. djloo27 said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:40 pm

Of the 5 Met HRs at Yankee Stadium tonight, I would say only one would’ve gone out at AT &T…

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:51 pm

I’m sure that’s going over well in Yankee Stadium. Man, what’s happened to Severino? Guy was untouchable earlier this year, now he’s as bad as one of our 5 Fives.

  20. Flavor said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:52 pm

I agree with what Snarkk said earlier today. Our problem really isn’t our pitching. The pitching has actually been good this year. Our hitters, as usual, smoke massive and copious amounts of pole. That’s the problem, not the pitching

  21. snarkk said, on August 13, 2018 at 6:52 pm

Is Melancon actually still in the Pen?
Or, is he up sawing wood at the Heritage Salvage yard in Petaluma?…

    • blade3colorado said, on August 13, 2018 at 7:10 pm

Giants have at least 6 (I keep losing count) unbelievably bad contracts. By my count, Melanoma, Smarg, Longo, Cueto, Pence, and Cutch). The latter 2 coming off the books this season.

I think all of these stiffs get a pass from the fans because there’s so many of them. Conversely, when Benitez was here blowing saves, he was an easy target being the lone ranger, insofar as bad contracts. Especially, when he was saying stupid shit after a loss, where he claimed, “I did my job.”

  22. zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 7:04 pm

Then when he decides to get this burger 🍔 and the picture shows this full hearty burger with all the fixings on it, and his looked that sorry ass polish you got at a game once, he’s loses it! 37. willedav said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:41 pm

Disagree about pitching not being an issue. Other than Bum and DRod, very ordinary. Suarez has gotten his ass kicked last 3 times out. Blach Strat are 5s and even Holland the ace has ERA 4.00 ish. The others are all higher than that.
They have the benefit of pitching at ATT, which last year and this allows fewest bombs and they are still 9th in the league. Pen guys I like, but otherwise team should still be top 5.

    • Lurker John said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:44 pm

Giants are 9th in a 15 team league. That’s pretty mediocre.

  38. unca_chuck said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:44 pm

Of the problems, hitting is a much bigger problem. I don’t think anyone is saying we are fantastic at pitching, but we flat suck at the plate,

    • James said, on August 13, 2018 at 8:56 pm

Bum looks fine to me. K pop out broken bat bloop single and another K in 6th. Game should be tied if his 2 fielders didn’t smash into one another on fluke play.
I think he and Posey know what he can do these days, and how he’s gonna get hitters out.

    • zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:15 pm

Well, he is what he is these days. It’s a new normal fans will have to get used to. A six-inning guy, who nibbles a lot. He’s still good, but some of us were discussing Hall of Fame chances before last season. That looks out the window now.

    • willedav said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:35 pm

oh you’re right Bum’s different. Op tho has also lost couple mph off the fastball, mostly 91 nowadays. They are both still pretty tough. Miller just said Op’s first time going 8 all season, and retired last 9 in a row.

Coming into tonight’s game I figure the odds of the Giants winning the division or a wildcard are about 100-1. Even if they win, say 9 out of the next 10 games. The odds will still be about the same. Win only 6 out of 10. It’s 200-1.
In lieu of making the playoffs, fucking up the Dodgers shit will have to suffice.

Great. The obligatory out. Putting up a fight at least.

That was a filthy set of pitches he just laid on Duggar.

On a laundry list of what’s wrong with this team – I’m down with what Willie said about Posey. Dude is almost 32, playing injured, and is the best player on this team, not named Rodriguez.

Also, Willie props for your pitching comments. Pitching is horrible and is tiring out our good bullpen. Hitting ditto. Comparing both is comparable to determining the differences between vomit and crap. 💩

Hey Blade-congrats on the restaurant! And that was a great pic of you and Paul.

Thank you much Peter! Still struggling a bit, but the food is delicious and Linh works tirelessly.

So tired of Kershaw. Wonder how many more years we’ll have to watch him shut down the Giants.

Pence gave it his best dribbler.

One of Pence’s better dribbler of the year, I’ll give him that much..

    Pence with a wallop to . . . wait for it . . . the pitcher. Meh.

Hey Puig how did you like that heater from Black chump?? Actually I wouldn’t of minded Black drilling his sorry ass!!

  65. willedav said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:43 pm

whoosh! black blows that 98 right by Puig’s arrogant whiny ass. Fooled him and Taylor pretty badly with the breaking ball too. Black vs. Puig has to happen again this week, last time SF sees LA.

  67. Bozo said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:48 pm

    Come on Longo, your turn.

  68. alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:48 pm

Sure glad Posey’s not batting 5-6 th now, your best hitter needs the most times automatic 4ab’s

  69. sandog said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:49 pm

Bellinger in CF. Dodgers crack me up. They’re like a beer league softball team. Try to launch one every time up and don’t sweat the other aspects of the game. Looks fun.

  70. Bozo said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:50 pm

Come on Slater, do it for Stanford.

  71. zumiee said, on August 13, 2018 at 9:51 pm
