Continuing to Lose to Bad Teams
Another team with a worse record that us beats us. Not at all surprising. We are one of 15 teams in mlb that espn gives a 0.1% chance (or less) of making the playoffs. Somehow the Dodgers are at 61% and the Rox are at 39% even tho the Colorado has a better record than LA. Not sure how that works.
Buster getting cut up on Mon. This has been a wasted week and if he’s not ready by Spring Training I hope everyone remembers this debacle.
Full Metal Jacket was just ok. I liked the scene sets but the movie was too long and its length didn’t really allow it to tell a better story than it could have if it was shorter. I’m giving it 2 Flaps Up and feel pretty solid on that rating.
The Dodgers have an easier remaining schedule than the Rockies.
i know that but that’s worth a whopping 22%?
They probably also feel some under-performing Dodgers could get hot at the end. Taylor comes to mind. Bellinger is considered an under-performer in spite of his numbers. The Dodgers are always a threat to go on a 25-5 surge with that lineup. It hasn’t happened yet this season, though.
They did have a hot streak in June if I remember correctly.
I thought those percentages were just based off current record, strength of schedule remaining and home/road games left. No?
I share the same sentiment as Snarkk regarding FMJ. The first half is great but once they get to Vietnam it tends to just drag on.
One other thing I didn’t like about FMJ: that fat bastard should have been in better shape by the time he went crazy. That was unrealistic
Ha, very true!
why trip over how much $$ a guy makes? Giants with yard paid off and development on the way, are not small market team. Owner is already a billionaire.
The lux tax nonsense was a conscious decision they made, not something they had to do and something that’s cost them quite a bit in terms of talent they might have had. It was really dumb idea and big factor this year imo.
More important to me is how well someone is playing; Pence sucks because he’s terrible at any salary. I just don’t see Giants getting a better OF than Cutch. Duggar and Slater are fine, but neither shows much power at all. So if you can’t get much in a trade to go forward, I don’t have a problem keeping for a year, or less.
If you are already bad hitting team, hard to figure how dumping off your best hitter(s) helps improve the team—which should be what the goal for next year is, to get better.
At the end of the day, Cutch is going to be their team leader in just about everything outside of batting average. He could end up with 20 homers, which hardly ever happens to the Giants anymore, which is pathetic in and of itself. I’ve been as frustrated as anyone by his inconsistencies this year, but I agree with you that they just may bring him back after all. One thing he has done is stay on the field, and that’s no small thing with this team.
It’s hard to fathom how this former championship organization has gotten itself into this pickle, with few options to get out of it. They are absolutely hamstrung right now. Terrible front office at this point. Evans has to go, imo, if only to send a message.
Still think the whole lux tax deal with other big market teams vowing to stay under it to avoid penalty reeks of collusion, however unprovable it is. Over cigars and single malts post banquet one of them went off, likely over Boras name coming up for discussion and said he’d never give him or his players another dime. Everyone else in the room went along enthusiastically with a we’ll show them and there goes your offseason FA market. Mission accomplished.
Next year is already a nothing.
This team no matter what it does is going nowhere in 2019.
That’s why McCutchen possibly here makes no sense to me. He’s here, he’s just OK; hes not here — it doesn’t much matter either way. Him playing here next year just blocks a spot evaluating somebody else.
So trade him now, get a bag of balls, get younger players up to play.
FO needs to stop populating this roster with people they think are just good enough to get the team not to suck…
I think they’ll try hard to deal Belt this off-season.
Like it or not, I’m sure Buster will be playing a lot of 1B when he returns…
Since it’s not hip replacement surgery, I think he’ll be right back behind the plate when he’s ready. They may have back there less than before, but I think he wants to catch. I suppose Bart’s development will factor in as well.
Yes
Hearing this morning that the Posey hip surgery requires 6-8 months of recovery.
8 months from now is end of March 2019.
Giants had to know this surgery was needed at least at the AS break. I suspect they knew well before they drafted Bart. I’d like to know from our intrepid beat reporters when they knew this.
Having him catch the last several weeks makes absolutely no sense.
If he misses a couple months of next season, and any of it is because of this delay, the FO should be skewered …
Looks like Xoot knocked it out of the park, labral repair and the removal of a bone spur for Posey. Sorry to hear he has to go through this because he’s given everything to this team over the years and left it all on the field. Get well soon, dude, and finish out your career with a flourish.
I got really lucky last night. While having dinner at one of our favorite restaurants here, we met a kid from DC who is in Reno for some type of conference related to his work (OMB). He came over to Placerville to do some wine tasting. We ended up inviting him over after we all finished dinner and killed a couple bottles of some really good wine, and I never did turn on the game. Again…I got lucky.
Agree with ya Snarkk about the timing of Posey’s surgery. Regardless, I think Evans absolutely needs to go.
Oh, how I long for those slugging Giants teams of yore. 65 ribbies may well lead this team, and that is bad beyond description, especially in today’s game. D-Rod utterly screwed last night, and in front of his ‘rents no less. Wow. He’s about all there is left worth watching.
Here are Bart’s pro stats, to date. Pretty good numbers at Salem-Keizer.

ice. Showing some pop too.
D-Rod isn’t as good as Lincecum but his arrival reminds me of Lincecum arriving in the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, bringing some life to a dead-in-the-water team.
Bochy signed through next season.
I guess he’ll finish it out and be done…
Yeah, he’ll probably be offered a fake front-office position, but he’ll probably pass on that.
I don’t see the point of jettisoning Booby only to have Sabean remain. It’s not like he’s been making moves in a vacuum. Moving Belt doesn’t make sense to me either considering he could play LF and Posey’s level of play won’t be known until he returns. Panik’s dog shit performance this year should reduce his value in arbitration so he’s probably sticking around too. As has been said, this is the club for the next year or two with tweaks around the edges as salaries expire.
The Giants are sitting 12th in the only race left that matters-‘19 draft order. Fortunately this is a race in which the club actually has a chance to catch the teams ahead of them.
Yep. Giants need to lose out and move up in the draft order. Another reason to jettison McCutchen. Play youngsters, lose while evaluating, get a top 7 or 8 pick, and pick a damn outfielder with RH pop next year…
A problem I have with FMJ is the film shows its ’80s production values. The film never fully feels “real” to me.
Having said that, war can be surreal, and the film captures that.
I don’t want to see any trades in the off season. I don’t even want us to go after Harper or Machado. Make the qualifying offer to Cutch. If he takes it—great—he is our best hitter and we NEED short term rental players for this 3-4 year stretch where we turn this battleship around. If he turns it down—also great—we get a draft pick. Then look for other cheaper short term free agents (Lucas Duda/Lance Lynn types) to add to the mix. Glad to have Bochy back at manager and Belt, Posey, Craw, Longoria back at their positions. Booby and Sabean doing a helluva job in my book these days—keep up the good work!
Bringing the fences in, moving the bullpens, and firing Kuiper would all be awesome moves in my book as well. Also, ink Bum to a budget friendly long term deal asap while we still have a sliver of leverage. No trades as this year winds down either—everyone goes down with the ship.
Yes, we are going into the wilderness, BUT our core is going to keep us from having to go into the horrific 100+ loss season portions of the wilderness. As Flavor has asked for before, drafts needs to be heavily slanted toward hitters—we can turn damn near anyone into a decent pitcher in our ridiculous park. I’ve been saying 2021 is the target for us having a young and talented team on the rise. I think I need to change that to 2022 as I see Craw, Belt, Cueto, Longo, and Buster are still on the books thru 2021. 2022 is going to be awesome and our core 7 albatross contracts are going to be our bridge to get us there while still sniffing .500 from time to time. Enjoy going to games and watching the guys who made 3 in 5 possible. Three Rings!! ( I still have to remind myself of that sometimes) Not one, not two, but THREE rings. Go Giants!
Good post SanD.
I disagree with all of that except stay away from wasting time with even a PR campaign for Harper. Everbody is on the block, including management…
At least it’s realistic. If you have a plan for transforming this franchise any sooner that doesn’t involve a Magic Genie, I’d love to hear it.
I don’t, that’s the point. There’s no magic so get on with it. Don’t keep playing a losing hand. I’m full on for a tear down and a few years of crap ball 2007 style. Other teams have done it, so can the Giants. Why keep a guy like McCutchen? Trade all you can trade including Bum and stock up with youngsters on the farm…
I don’t think it is that far fetched that we make the playoffs in the next year or two. Hell, 99 things went wrong this year and we were 5 games out after 120 games. Cutch helps us keep that dream alive—and if he turns down the offer, we get a draft pick that we desperately need. The draft is our main lifeline for turning this thing around.
What you said!!!
1. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
3. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
4. Nick Hundley (R) C
5. Austin Slater (R) LF
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Chase d’Arnaud (R) 2B
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Andrew Suarez (L) P
“No trades as this year winds down either—everyone goes down with the ship.”
lulz!
I know . . . This entire wacky post (all of which I disagree with) should go in the POTD HOF.
they’ve been interviewing all the guys from 2010 this morning on KNBR. Fun to listen to. Twinner had a great post about those guys, it’s in the POTD-HOF I’ll go find it and repost below
Eh, couldn’t find it. Maybe it wasn’t in the Flap HOF. There was this one, tho

These men will be heroes in SF for as long as they live- and beyond…
“Booby and Sabean doing a helluva job in my book these days—keep up the good work!”— Diggity
What is this, what do you mean by this?
Even Marty Lurie has given up. Even he the last optimist standing said this morning NOBODY should be untouchable for trade heading into next season…
Yeah I don’t know the gal talking with Marty(Ca
Shit hit the post too quick.Anyway Carmen? I think she said, Marty you said earlier in the season a list of guys were untouchable,Bum,Craw,Posey etc now your backtracking? Caught him alittle flatfooted , but he did finally agree to blow things up..
For someone to believe that, they would have to think that this team was good enough as constructed and was done in by injuries…
I mean I totally support what they did this past off season. DIdn’t work out as planned, but I support it. Also love that they haven’t traded for anyone or traded away anyone this year. Also agree with staying under luxury tax. We’re in a real bind with all of these contracts that seemed like a good idea at the time, but blew up on us. I think they are proceeding correctly given all that. I hope they follow the blueprint I laid out earlier—-and I kind of suspect they will.
i supported their moves in the off season too. But the writing has been on the wall. There was zero reason to keep playing Buster and even less than zero to keep Cutch on the team with them so backed up to the CBT. He is a luxury they can’t afford. Time to get rid of him for the salary relief alone.
We were in it dude. Yeah, yeah, yeah……lots of teams ahead of us hardly anyone worse, but we were 5 games out after 120 games. You can’t shut Buster down when you’re 5 games out.
Sandawg always being the class contrarian. Others zig and he zags, I love it.
From what I have been reading several teams are in on Cutch. Yankees, Indians and Astros all with strong interest. I think he could bring back a couple mid to upper tier lower level prospect if a bidding war ensues. Get it done. If the Giants could trade Bum and Belt in the off-season for top lower level (not ML ready) prospects it could go a long way towards turning this putrid farm system around. I can handle a couple more crap seasons while the ship rights itself. Unfortunately I think Sandawg’s theory wins out.
Get ‘er done …
Choo’s nickname should be Ah.
Excellent!
In a non-PC world it would be…
Nice little ceremony before the game. The guys still look great. Freddie Sanchez is kind of thicker; but still looks in pretty good shape.
Underpants is good for Pence’s nickname, cause he plays with soiled skid marks…
Ah, Hunter Pence this season….
At a -.5 WAR and a .545 OPS, and 25th person on the roster.
I hope the Giants owners think it was worth it.
An HR!!!
Well, Bochy waits long enough, there will be a 3 run dong every 7-8 weeks or so…
3 run bomb. Excellent. That’s what they need to do to compete in today’s game.
Giants with a mini 2010 celebration today with Texas in town. Pat the Bat was funny with Miller on radio 📻. Get ready for more celebrations the next few years as the Giants execute their plan to achieve .480 ball…
Sitting down to watch The Gambler right now. Game is on w/o sound.
That movie was in heavy rotation on Channel 40 when I was growing up. I remember liking it, not loving it—even though I’ve always been a big Jimmy Caan guy. Maybe I was too young to appreciate it and need to give it another shot.
The novel is really good
Zum, did you get one of those 50 cent frosties when you were at Wendy’s the other day?
I certainly hope you did.
No, unfortunately. I went through the drive-thru and only got the burger.
Shoot. I’m not a big Wendy’s fan but I do like those frosties. They used to serve something very similar in the cafeteria at Woodland High. They were great and cost I think 15 cents.
Bullpen mounds. I recently noticed that those mounds are graded steeply in back like the field mound. Why? That’s what trips OFs over there. Fill it in, make the backs of those mounds spread gently toward field level. Never no more risky stumbles.
Anyone else experiencing TV picture problems with today’s game? My picture is kind of pixelating sometimes.
I’m watching Ranger broadcast, which is coming in fine. I’m enjoying their announcers. They were talking earlier about how nice it has been to be at the St Francis for a week this time of year while playing A’s and now Giants.
I remember the rangers writers and announcers getting excited about the scent of smoke in the air back in October 2010. Funny stuff
Burgers at The Habit are pretty good. More expensive than In n Out, but tastier and better quality…
I’m with you on that. We don’t agree on the Giants pathway moving forward, but at least we got Habit Burger as common ground.
I checked their web site, the Habit’s got a few locations in Jersey, I may have to try this place.
Try the tempura green beans in lieu of fries. Excellent.
We can definitely haggle over the Giants future over a couple of double chars and rings, and I’ll be 😃
Resign Pence!
Underpants HR off Moore, haha.
Well, you almost have to laugh. Of course, Pence hit an HR off of Matt Moore.
Ha! Macdog did laugh.
No wonder the A’s hit a lot of HRs, they play this team 18 times.
Appropriate it’s a #2 for underpants,I almost soiled my underwear..
Oh fuck, here we go again.
Same old Strickland.
It doesn’t get any uglier than this, to paraphrase Steve Earle
Nice of Musclehead to drop in just long enough to lay a steaming 3 run 💩…
that movie was weird as fuck. But I liked it. Never saw it going where it went, I like that. 3.5 Flaps Up.
You have to watch it dozens of times to appreciate the many brilliant nuances of Caan’s performance…
Did you happen to notice how ball handling wiz, Spencer Lewis basically couldn’t do anything with his left hand…
lol wow. The look on Smitty’s face said it all there.
Melancon? W.T.F.
I’d rather have Smith continue this even near 30 pitches than play the brain dead righty lefty thing and rolll dice on the game with Melancon…
My picture (only on this channel) is still pixelating. Really annoying.
Game! Easy Peasy nice and ….
Yay!
Mel’s Bowl gets it done…
Wow, way too much drama to hang on and end that thing.
Anyway, back up towards .500 again, that’s cool.
This game just shows importance again of the HR.
Without their one big fly to counter the Rangers’ big fly, Giants are likely losers in this one…
Melancon with the save! Building him back up into a totally decent late inning guy is a key part of the SanDawg “Transition Competitively” plan to 2022.

🙂
You didn’t think he was gonna ever pitch again this year Zum! Now he’s closed a game. I’m happy as hell for the guy.
Good luck with that. Not gonna happen. Then again Pence killed my prediction that neither he or Posey would hit a bomb after the break.
Sure the grand total is likely a whopping Uno, but I digress. Been watching the Niners play some mistake filled football. Shan’t should rip these guys.
Shanny needs to tear them a new one, unacceptable penalties and mistakes with 1 preseason game left, oh now a pick for the game ender..
Yeah Chuck, you’re still looking gold on the under 4.5. My casino is gonna take a beating on that one……
Your killing me Smalls!
We can rebuild him, we have the technology!
Your killing me Smalls!
We can rebuild him, we have the technology!
You’re the Oscar Goldman of the The Flap Kat!
I had to Google Oscar Goldman…
Pence homered???? I win! I WIN!
Posey played yday we lost…Hundley played today we won!!!;)
Full Metal Jacket…classic! Great movie…for the first half….drags in second half as Flav acknowledges. Can you believe they filmed the whole movie in England? Even the war scenes.
nice FMJ knowledge
So what, we only get the Caesar GIF when Smith closes out the game?
UNACCEPTABLE LOO!
The dummy is a little under the weather today, SD…
love Habit great burger/shake for buck, and fries are good too and you get a big serving. Place down the street from work charges twice as much and the shake is smaller. Really trying to avoid all the places springing up with $10-15 burgers. Ugh.
YES College football is on. Watching NC A&T out of the MEAC (which produced Niner stars like Dwaine Board) vs. Jacksonville St. Not to be confused with Jacksonville U home to one of the largest athletes I ever saw play live, Artis Gilmore who was on Spurs at that time with his awesome ‘fro.
Gilmore had a 7 foot teammate at Jacksonville named Pembrook Burrows…
what was the Posey/Pence bomb bet again? I forget the parameters
4.5 was the over/under. I said they wouldn’t hit 1 between ’em.
Dodgers are feasting on the Padres like Flappers feasting on burgers.
The burgers are momentarily fighting back.
this was the Pence/Posey bomb thread
https://oneflapdown77.com/2018/07/25/making-sense-of-hunter-pence/comment-page-1/#comments
Man, Altuve absolutely drilled by a pitch. So many hard-throwing relievers now, so many players getting drilled.
He’s still in the game (for now), but it looks like a golfball was inserted into his arm.
D-Backs blow the save. Boxberger’s ERA is now 3.63. That’s an issue for that team.
Jansen blows the save! Padres go yard off of him!
Cost Kershaw a win. (sad trombone)
Other than his first few, Kubrick made his films in England.
He left the US after making Spartacus in the early 60s, and never came back…
Span hit the game-winning HR vs. the D-Backs because of course he did.
Electrical power out at Dodger Stadium. The old ballpark is having kind of a rough season.
Dodgers won the game, but at least the Padres made them work for it.
Yeah their plumbing system is the shits too!
Holland got some heat over the weekend for doing an impression of a Japanese person on the MLB Network; it seemed somewhat racist to a lot of people. I’m perplexed why he thought that was some kind of funny schtick.
Because Holland’s a complete idiot…
Yeah. baseball players aren’t known for their sense or propriety. If you showed Holland Josh Hader’s tweets 10 minutes before his shit, he wouldn’t make the connection.
