Monday!
Lots of chatter preparing us for the possibility of Buster not being ready for opening day. If he’s a week late then you can chalk pretty much any loss in the first 7 games of the season up to the dumbass mismanagement of the team by Sabean and anyone else in charge of that petrified move.
I’m sorry I questioned Boch yesterday for bringing in Melancon on Sat. Obviously he needs to see if Melancon is healed enough to help the team in a high leverage situation. And we should all be happy if Double M has taken another step in the healing process to be counted on next season…..
Now, please, pretty please with sugar on top, trade Andrew McCutchen this week….
Pretty unseasonably cool weather out here this month. San Francisco hasn’t see the temps his 70 degrees since August 9th. Trip out on that, east coasters.
I think Niners fans would tell you SF seems to get better weather for football season. Everyone has frozen their asses off once sun shifted for day games at Stick. Good luck trying to light smoke in dirt lot afterwards too.
Any contribution from M is gratefully rec’d, esp this time of year when pen guys are showing wear and tear. Not just Giants either, it happens everywhere.
Once Beatles music took off there were more TV shows with music on them beside D Clark and Am Bandstand, with the artists lip synching their hits.
Since to this day I have zero dancing skills, watching crowd on floor on these shows was a trip. A guy called Famous Hooks (only in LA) was on that show with his partner, some beautiful black gal, fabulous dancers.
I distinctly recall seeing a weekly program in ’60s from Philly with a white DJ guy playing mostly soul music and a crowd full of mostly black dancers. Guy’s stage name was Hy Lit. Out here there wasn’t anything like this in deepest darkest suburbia.
Trading Cutch makes no sense. We need him next year to help us remain competitive. Yeah, 18 mil would be an overpay, but we can handle it for one year. Plus, I think he’d probably turn us down anyway and then we get a draft pick we could use big time.
We didn’t shut Buster down because we were still in it. DId we have a great chance? No, but we were in the hunt. You gotta ride those chances out when they come along.
Props to you for the Melancon/Bochy love.
we have nothing in the outfield. Without looking at the FA crop for this winter, I’m guessing we can get 2 OF’s who would meet or exceed what Cutch could do (and would probably cost less than 18 mil). And really this has more to do with an organizational shift AWAY from paying vets big deals. I’m tired of it. It doesn’t work anymore.
See ya Cutch…
Ham sandwiches are a fair deal…
What I read about the Garcia kid they called up to back up Hundley wasn’t real complimentary. He hasn’t hit much despite being 2nd round pick 2014 and has had 2 concussions in the minors. Asking Hundley to C every day and reverse roles for another month will take its toll on him, rest assured.
In the MLBTR story about posey having the surgery there were blogger comments on Giants C back ups which of course over the were mostly fails like Hacktor and Susac. C Stewart just got DFA’d by Braves. 2011 was just awful watching the Prez and him behind the plate.
It’s only for a month. I’m sure Hundley will be fine. I wonder if Bart will get a September call-up.
I will be very surprised if he gets the call. I don’t think they want to start the clock on him so soon, and he has minimal minor league experience.
Have the worse OF in baseball power wise, where’s the big thumper going to come from?
Heliot? not ready, Honky Oaf? always hurt..
You need power at 1st&3rd kinda have that, but you need it in the outfield as well and it’s not there..
There’s not going to be a big thumper, unless one of the aforementioned develops into one down the road. The Giants just seem to be wholly unconcerned with playing the power game, because they play in a “pitcher’s park.”
The FA guys on the list I saw not named Machado or Harper are all 30 yrs old +. MLBTR has a list updated spring of this year. Best OF option I saw was M Brantley, good hitter with injury hist and oh btw bats LH.
Still don’t buy the idea anyone over 30 sucks and will fall apart soon. Exhibit A: M Carpenter of STL. M Kemp has unfortunately been pretty good pick up for Dodgers too.
Brantley will be 32 next May and makes $11.5 mil this year. Dubious SF can find better and younger hitter as FA OF. Plus he missed all of 2016 and only played 90 some games last year.
Don’t care about cheaper player, only finding a better one. As Loo said, too bad SF missed out on Marlins trade sweepstakes.
Come on. Hell to the no to Cutch. He plays poor defense and is hologramming himself back to Pittsburgh. He barely wants to be here and his play shows it.
Little power and indifferent defense for $18 mill? Fuck that. Play all the AAAers before going down that road.
His little power is by far better then any other outfielder they have, but yeah they should move him, for a couple more slap hitters..
You can’t compete with 3 outfielders next year that will get you 10-15( generous on my part)HR’s once Gorky comes off his roids.,
First of all, I was trying to look through comments from the weekend late last night and dirt’s dig had me laughing my arse off…getting potd tops it all off.
Technically I am not working for Commerce directly now. Accepted a senior position with the new Director of the Patent Office after I was able to get him confirmed through the Senate 97-0:)
It is going to be mid-90s here all week and humid as hell. I am rethinking an invite to play at Trump National tomorrow..
G-Head navigating The Swamp flawlessly!
Name of the game…I am prepping to insulate new boss if dems do take over the House…
Yeah this team remained more competitive than I thought they would and especially with the injuries to our 1-3 starters and various position players…
But if mgmt thinks they can continue to patch the lineup with over-paid vets, let everyone take a look at what the Phillies have done to rebuild and to rebuild their lineup entirely based on drafts and their minor leagues. That has to be the model and we need mgmt and a coach who can see through a proper rebuild.
The Phillies have built a competitive team and watch them land Trout in 2019 and bulk up their pitching and they will compete for a pennant.
And there is free agent squat this year. If we dont spend the year playing every potential prospect and trading what we can, all we will be doing is sustaining a mediocre team playing. 500 ball instead of a proper rebuild…
A rebuild like that is problematic for this team with all of the contracts on which they are locked-in. It will be a couple of years before they start turning this thing over with a host of fresh faces. Sabean said it, and it will happen…expect incremental changes for the next couple of years.
I agree that is likely the path…and that is a horrendous mistake. They attempted to get one more year out of this team and it fizzled..
Listen to McCutchen’s interview by Marty Lurie on Lurie’s website podcast, done several weeks ago. The dude doesn’t like right field at ATT. Sounds like he is passing time here, doesn’t want to be here, without coming out and saying so. Make his wish come true…
Sounds like he’ll turn down the QO. Awesome!
He ain’t getting $18 mill anywhere else dawg..
True, but the desire to go back to Pitt, or get a multi year deal, or get out of our park might override that.
We gotta take some chances to get out of this hole we’re in. Offering the QO to Cutch is one risk we need to take. Inking Bum to a long term deal asap is another.
Was busy as hell working on the motorcycles this weekend (prepping my ‘05 Road King to sell her), so had minimal Flap action.
I am sure you guys covered this, but those “nickname” unis were butt fucking ugly, IMO. Fucking lame ass idea.
Not sure if you guys saw it, or it it was commented on, but Bochy on yesterday’s post game was talking about them “going on a little run” and “gettin’ back in it.” Really? Pass the pipe, Bruce.
I am a BIG NO on Cutch @ $18 mil. They can get similar production for a year, for a lot less coin. Plus, as others have alluded, the dude flat out sucks in the field.
Garcia missed nearly all of 2016 with what was called a ‘facial fracture’. Don’t know what the details of that are, but he then had a concussion in 2017 as well but he only missed a couple weeks and hasn’t felt any aftereffects.
“NAME HERE” wasn’t bad for a nickname.
Tell ya one thing, it would be funny to see the Giants reel off 6 in a row vs AZ snd the Mets. Although all that would do is help the Dodgers.
Face Plant might be better Chuck..
NOBODY is giving McCutchen 18 million dollars. For one year. For 3. Maybe 4 or 5. And if there’s a lost first round pick attached to the offer than there’s even less than a zero chance he’d get the offer. Dude is at the end of the road without a big offer coming in. Of course he’d take 18 mil for a season. That’s not ever a question. I’d like to hear the context this was discussed on Lurie’s show, anyone got a link?
He didn’t discuss contract stuff with Lurie. Only touchy feely and especially how tough it’s been for him in RF at ATT. Seemed not happy…
Check loveofthegameproductions.com and the August archives for McCutchen interview. One of Marty’s ladies did the interview. He seems more focused in having his wife and son on the road with him than getting his S together in the outfield…
What you said . . . Ludicrous that this less than zero hologram is even being discussed as a potential return. Even more hilarious is that a team would match an $18 million dollar QO . . . What am I saying???? In effect, if our dumbass FO gives him that $18 gazillion QO, I will personally return from Vietnam to Willie Mays Plaza and bring the rope for Sabes and Evans lynching. 😉
I don’t know if it’s it triple’s alley, the angles of the walls in right/right center and the huge amount players play off RF line to comprar-te the gap, but over the years only Winn, Pence, and a smaller degree Scheirholtz are the only Giant players that could do it…,
Cutch isn’t misplaying ball off the wall. He’s misplaying shit hit at or near him.
That’s true. He’s gotten a lot of bad reads on balls in the air this year.
Good article from Baggarly on Buster’s hip surgery (The Athletic). The crucial part:
“During the procedure, the surgeon will address the bony impingement by shaving down bone either on the ball or the socket, removing the “bone spur” that collides with the labrum every time the hip is flexed. The tear in the labrum is repaired by stapling or suturing the torn piece back onto the rim of the hip socket.
“If the surgery is limited to “just” those procedures, Posey is likely to return to play closer to six months after the surgery.
“But here’s the unknown. Labrums are made of cartilage, a type that can be repaired.
“What nobody knows, and won’t until the surgeon completes the surgery, is the extent of the damage to the other cartilage in the hip, the articular cartilage that lines the joint, which can’t be so easily repaired.
“This is critically important because both the short- and long-term recovery will hinge on the amount of damage to this cartilage. If there is arthritis in the hip joint, necessitating the inclusion of a procedure called microfracture — used to repair damaged cartilage by poking small holes in the joint surface to stimulate growth of a new, scar-like layer of cartilage — the recovery will be longer and a return to catching potentially more difficult, primarily because that new layer cartilage isn’t as good as the old, with less ability to protect the joint.”
Thanks, Mike. I had microfracture surgery on one of my ankles. And while my ankle is better now than before, it does flare-up once in a while. I got the same line from my surgeon, that the “pseudo-cartilage” created from the procedure is not as resilient as the original. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.
Can’t they just take some of Belt’s vag stem cells and grow some new cartilage for Posey or something?
lol! Oh man, I needed that laugh, thanks
the new and improved Belt would kick your ass for a joke like that, and then never think about it in the field
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
LOL. That’s brutal.
On yesterday’s thread, thanks for all the Beatles stuff, you cool Flappers. I had never seen the car karaoke episode. Very nice!
And the deconstruction of the opening chord to A Hard Day’s Night, very cool!
And the Hey Jude video, an awesome video!
The Giants have done well against the NL West so far this season. Unfortunately, not so well against a bunch of other divisions.
I’m pretty sure they’ll find a taker for McCutchen by 8/31.
Someone will sign him next season for $ 5 million at most…
I’d guess he’s back in Pittsburgh…
Mac’s girlfriend blogged about this ordeal. Heavy stuff
http://thelymeygypsy.com/2018/08/27/dealing-with-macs-concussion/
That’s very revealing. It’s so easy to underestimate what someone is going through with a concussion, but an insider’s perspective really hammers it home. Hopefully he’ll be completely over it and ready to go next season.
even tho she sounds pretty ditzy, I agree with you, very revealing. It must really fuck with you to have your brain betray you like that.
she’s fine. she did a good job describing the trauma. what a fucking ordeal.
Anyone see a lawsuit down the road?
headed to Kentucky Downs next weekend to cross an item off my bucket list. I’m assuming we’ve got no Flappers in Tenn or Kentucky, eh? I can’t wait…..
Hot diggity Duggar!
OH YEAH!
Duggar development would really go a long way to San Dawg’s “Competing in 2019 plan” or whatever he titled it
I think he was talking about 2021 or something.
2022. The battleship completes its turn in 2022.
…..while remaining marginally competitive until then. Yes, Duggar may have a role in all that.
Dirt going back 2 back at POTD—that’s rarified Loo air.
Hundley went 0-13 on road trip, and he’s 1-6 since. Hey he turns 35 early next month; he’s had a nice season I just don’t think it ends well and his O numbers are going to go downhill playing 5+ days a week.
Ole!!!
Fuck off Krukow. Cutch misplyed that horribly. He took the wrong route and whiffed on the recovery.
critical inning for Strat. This is where he usually implodes. 2 groundballs to SS, great sign.
and a K. wow 6 shutout innings. AZ is in first place and he’s kept them off scoreboard so far.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you had to leave one foot in the box on a called strike?
I just watched Stratton completely leave the box on one.Baseball rules committee are letting these rules slide again..
What’s the alternative? Stratton gets a ball for leaving the box during a pitch?
Oh boy. If he breaks and stops, then all are safe. They don’t turn 2 either way. Kruk is full of shit.
Kruk is always full of shit💩nothing new there..
Loo’s right. It would be easier for Pence to hit that pitch from the other batters box.
Jesus. This team can’t get out of its own way. It you don’t send the runner on a grounder to the OF, then why put on the contact play when the IF is playing in?
If things pay out the way they usually do, AZ scores because we just puked on our shoes. And Strat usually goes wonky after 5 or 6.
I hope I’m wrong . . .
Do the Giants still have to play the Pence farewell tour all the way thru Sept as well??
Oh yes, it’s happening.
If Duggar or Slater finish next year within 50 points below Cutch’s season OPS this year . . . it ain’t gonna happen. These guys are 24 and 25 already, not 21. I like that Slater knows how to draw a walk.
He’s a good Stanford man. He can do anything….
That doesn’t make Cutch worth $18 mill, though.
Nope, but he’s not played nearly as terribly as the commentary suggests. He’s having a similar season to 2016. He was better in 2017. He’s shown enough this year that a 2019 like 2017 is not out of the question.
Define ‘not nearly as terrible’. 98th in slugging percentage? Poor defense?
Yes exactly James. Last thing I want to see Giants do is play some dumpster dive replacement level guy on the cheap like Gorks in his stead.
He’s playing like someone who doesn’t give a shit. His defense is lousy. Pittsburgh didn’t want him in CF. He doesn’t want to be here. I know we don’t have much, but I’d rather see Slater and Duggar out there than another year of Cutch.
Your final sentence is a nice little poem, Chuck…
lqtm
Impressive outing by Strat. He just might win 10 games.
In 1966, Marichal won his 10th on May 31st…
I’d bet they were al complete games as well.
And went on too win 25 games..
All but this one – with good reason…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN196605070.shtml
13 run 3rd inning. lol
The 13 run inning ended the ML career of a Cardinal pitcher named Dennis Aust…
3 team trifecta that will still want Cutch, will be Yanks, Philadelphia, and Astros, with Houston going down the stretch for the win..
He would probably do ok in LF at Minute Maid due to the short porch their and not needing as strong an arm in Left over Right..
Fuck, Watson. Get it over.
For what it’s worth, Cutch’s WAR is at 1.6 so far. Pretty meh. His defense hurts his WAR.
Oh fuck me. Let the guy pitch.
Suck my bowls, Jack.
Looks like the Jack in the Box Crave Van is gone. Those were entertaining commercials.
I firmly believe Bochy won’t be back next season.
They’ll figure out a way to make it look good…
How about a horses head in his bed like in “The Godfather”? That’s a good going away gift right?
There was no reason to take Watson out,. It better not bite him in the ass.
Wow, Stratton back to his pre-baby form.
Stix nods his approval
That’s not the texas chump rangers out there. giants 10-7 vs. AZ on the year. Don’t tell me the Giants are uninspired don’t care and the mgr is mailing it in.
AZ guys tweeting that’s first bomb Corbin has given up in months. Duggar with gwrbi second day in a row, XBH no less. That’s now 3 bombs total for him and Slater combined and he has retaken lead 2-1.
Chuck the Cutch, please…
Did I hear this right?
Longo has something like a .289 OBP? WTF?…
