At Base Camp Without Oxygen
….and now we head to Colorado. Lulz, this should go smoothly. The Giants called up all the shitty arms they have left in Sacto this morning so at least we can run a bunch of dudes up and down the hill.
Whatever, it’s Labor Day and what a great day for baseball it is!
Side Bet: Get your picks in for how many games the Giants win in September. I am coming in at a solid SIX. 24 games remain….
Winner gets a coveted 2018 Flappy award for best prognosticator.
I’ll go with 8. One per series.
The Cardinal series in a few weeks is almost exactly 50 years after the Perry-Washburn back to back no hitters.
I recall that as a moment when it was really starting to sink in how much agony being a Giant fan was – even for a kid…
2018 Flappy award is payable in Flappycoin, aye?
aye!
I’ll be crazy and pick 10 wins.
the obvious number is 12 since they’ve been at .500 all year. I just can’t see this putrid collection of AAA hitters do anything consistently against some very good teams who are still playing for something.
Long ago, end of March or early April, I projected 80-82. 12 more wins is all they need. Of course they’ll do that, exactly that, although the team in Sept. doesn’t much resemble the team that came out of ST.
that’s the prob with March predictions. The team isn’t ever the same. But we have a good idea of who is going to be out here this month. And it’s not good.
Pence is still starting in LF, though. I’d laugh if I could.
what happens first today? A longo-dongo or a slater-tater? I’m calling lead off Slater-Tater and then nothing for several innings…..
I’ll go 10. Much could depend on that final series vs. the Bums, depending on whether they will have clinched the division by then or still need to still one or two that weekend.
*win one or two*
When Pete LaCock takes you deep:
Pence starting must be Bochy’s way to avoid seeing another Shaw strikeout, so he can see a familiar Pence swinging K on a slider 18″ down and outside in the dirt. Pence should be relegated to making and serving coffee in the pre-game caffeination room…
I’ll go with 7 wins…
Lost in the boredom was the insane day Hanson had at SS yesterday.
Where did that come from?
I called it out in my 3:35 yesterday.
To me, it showed he has the potential D to make Panik expendable.
They should trade Panik next Spring, after schooling Hanson hard on D in the off season — take 20K grounders and a ton of DP turns and pop ups at second. He should play winter ball; work on his RH hitting, or decide to abandon it if warranted. The guy is one of the few difference makers on the Giants…
How is he a difference maker? He has a .283 OBP and a .261 BA. He’s had some nice plays this year and driven in a few runs and he’s fast, but I don’t see him making that much of a difference. He’s struck out 7 times more than he’s walked this season.
And regardless of how hard he works on his D in the off season, right now he’s too often a stone-handed fielder. I’m not against dumping Panik at all, I just don’t think Hanson is worthy of such status.
He’s the only dude other than Duggar that has any speed. He can play infield or outfield. He does have pop left handed. We know what Panik can do, he’s not going to get better. Hanson is an open book…
Pence starting today makes me laugh, but with a ‘Tom Hanks in “Money Pit”‘ laugh.
Krueg’s on fire…..
Hanson is good to keep around because he plays with energy and fuels the team a little AND he’s nearly free. We need cheapo guys sprinkled in here if we’re gonna fix this. And I’m Hanson > Panik all day long. Panik is worthless at this point
Now that I’m inclined to agree with.
Why is Hundley starting 3 straight?
Garcia only caught a shutout and hit a dinger in his first MLB game.
He should start at least every other game the rest of the season.
WTF is management thinking — Hundley will make the difference to win meaningless games?…
it’s possible they’re tossing him a bone because he really wants to play against his former team. If that’s the case, hey, Hundley has earned it, he’s been a rockstar this year for us
Especially since Hundley hasn’t a HR since late July.
Krueg is livid these days…
Like I constantly say, this is what you get with ossified management, and a big season tix base.
Season tix holders should stop re-upping for more of this S.
The entire org needs an Augean stable clean the day after the season is over…
9
Before the season is over, I’m hoping to hear that Bochy is moving upstairs after the season.
He did a good job with what he was given this year.
It’s just time to move on – for his sake, too…
I will stick to my preseason prediction, meaning 7 more wins for this season.
I’ve forgotten what I predicted. I think at first I said 83, maybe 82. When Bum got hurt at end of ST, I think I changed it to 75. Looks like it’ll end up around the latter…
Well, that didn’t take long.
Rox get their favorite Coors punching bag to at least keep them on pace with L.A. this week.
Panik’s trade value has been lowered a lot and that McNeil guy has compromised my deal with the Mets.
Hanson’s a breath of fresh air, but I still have doubts about him as an every day player.
Except for the obvious Pence, the whole gang could be back…
Affeldt is in no condition to broadcast this game. He’s croaking like a frog.
but he’s talking a lot less than usual . . . . thumbs up
Good point.
Sounds like the game is not going well. I went to Xoot’s burger spot in North Beach yesterday. Let me know if we get to a point where my review would be a nice distraction.
At SFO waiting to board back down to SanDog now.
Bring on the review!
i never understood how The Joker rigged all his shit up. How did he do all that?
Craw hitting .177 since July 1.
3rd worst BA in that period in the entire MLB.
2 HRs over the last 50 games.
Yet, Craw gets nowhere near Belt’s share of crap…
Craw had that month and a half where he was on fire. He made the All Star game. Plus, shortstop offensive production expectation is not as much as firstbase.
Not sure I would call .177 over 2+ months at $15 million/year any kind of “production”…
Defense is a big factor at shortstop. He’s still a top rate defender.
But, yeah, other than that month and a half, he’s been terrible on offense this season.
Bring on the burger review.
Diggity how was that burger joint?
Looks like the usual stink on ice for the giants in Denver…
Garcia had a hit to keep the rally going. Play the rook!
Wild Man Hanson keeps the Giants alive!
Hanny!!!!
New guy!!!!
and it turns out Shaw can hit? nice
As I said, Hanson = difference maker…
Hanson, big clutch singer.
Shaw, mammoth dinger for first MLB hit. Garcia, another hard shot single for 3rd straight hit since last game.
Giants have to play these guys every game. To do otherwise is nonsense…
Clutch dinger, too…
The Giants are hopeless in this ballpark.
Bochy overused Watson the first half, he was nails then. He’s gassed now…
Wow, Shaw with some big time pop. 468 feet. Let’s hope he can do that consistently in the bigs. And his gf is a bombshell. Massive home run.
Keeping in mind that the ball travels further (farther?) at Coors, is it possible Shaw’s bomb is a 420′ out in triples alley?
I can’t imagine too many balls have been hit there at Coors. That was 5 rows back of that first deck behind the bullpen. Just a bomb. And Hanson too. I hope he can figure out how to get on base more, because with his speed he is a weapon, but the .283 OBP isn’t going to cut it. Fingers crossed that Shaw turns out to be the real deal because this team is desperate for power.
At the end of the day, another sucky loss at Coors fucking Field.
This dude Krueger is unequivocally correct when he says that it’s mind boggling to see this is the piece of shit team that our “ossified” (thank you Snarkk) brain dead front office put together this season at . . . cha ching . . . $206 million dollars.
Fucking absurd.
Heads need to roll, starting with Booby’s.
Eddie D. and the late Bill Walsh would clean house, starting at the top (bye bye Booby).
None of this frickin’ shit would stand. In fact, last season, they would have canned the entire front office and half the roster.
For comparison, essentially the same record can be bought for $90 million dollars in Pittsburgh.
I’m happy that Nike and many fans are still backing Kaepernick.
http://larrybrownsports.com/football/colin-kaepernick-face-of-nike-new-just-do-it-campaign/462550
Backlash to follow.
So tired of this whole thing…
Kaepernick sure surprised me. He used his stage, such as it was — a near washout backup QB on the sideline — to say something really important, and when pressed to explain he did, very well. It took off. To hell with the owners and Trump et al. If Kaep wins his collusion case, in that kangaroo court known as arbitration, that’ll just be a minor finishing touch. He’s already accomplished a lot.
Excellent post Xoot. Agree completely.
Giants have to be 2 games over .500 to get Boch exactly .500. So three games under now with 23 to play. Giants would have to go 13-10. So I will pray for 13-10 and get Boch to .500 and hope he goes quietly into the sunset…
man, you have spent a LOT of time worrying about Bochy’s career record, lulz. .500, .600, .400 does it really matter? It’s just a number. Those 3 beauties matter the most to him.
Because I think that milestone ends his reign…and my math sucks. They have to be two over .500, which means going 14-9…no way in hell they won 14…but there is my hopeful prediction…
If his career record is below .500, I guarantee he is back next year…also chasing 2000 wins..
Of course I consider this a good worthwhile loss…more a Colorado and Arizona win, better chance Flodgers not making the playoffs…
wow if we’re quoting Krueger for advice it’s a new low. He’s not on fire, he’s FOS.
Fire Sabean Now was handle of a guy Twin used to light up. got a feeling he’d feel same way now.
way I look at it, .500 ball was played for 4 months and I have zero problem with it…same as the Cardinals. New mgr didn’t get off to good start but his hitters came around. Most notably M Carpenter, proving the lie in all that anyone over 30 is done stuff.
As opposed to Giants whose hitters all went south especially the holdover vets.
so there’s the solution–fortify and develop pitching (Young seems great addition) and get couple more hitters.
And imo vs. a year ago, the rebuild /reload from 64-98 has already started, because of Sabes. He added 3 primo bargains in Holland the ace, D Rod the true ace and Hanson most exciting currently healthy guy out there.
And he’s the same guy who drafted not only Bart but Slater Moronta Duggar Shaw Strat and Suarez. That already represents over a third of roster, all in a positive direction.
The danger is if the Giants just slosh around .500 for the next 4 or 5 years, just spinning their wheels, if more dramatic action isn’t taken.
Shaw will NOT have a career in my opinion. One bomb at Coors doesn’t change my opinion one iota. The dude up until today, has yet to see more than three pitches in a plate appearance and he had never seen a Major League pitch called for a ball. Wow! In short, he is a human billboard for striking out.
I was impressed with Hanson’s defense the other day, but can he do it consistently? I don’t know. Similarly, can he get on base consistently? To date, he’s been terrible. That being said, keep.putting him out there, as Panik has face planted and obviously isn’t the answer. Maybe Hanson elevates himself above utility player. Wait and see . . .
Slater, Duggar, Suarez, and Stratton are just “guys.” They haven’t proven anything to date.
Regarding Twin, I could give 2 shits about what he would say back than or now . . . Moreover, I disagree with you. I think he would be calling for people to be fired. Equally important, why even bring up what Twin would say? Is that supposed to buttress your argument? Make me quiver in my shoes? 😂
We’ll just have to agree to disagree on the direction of this team and those in charge of running it. I think they’re doing a terrible job and the GM minimally, should.be fired.
Bochy’s career record could be a couple of games under .500 and still round off to a .500 winning percentage.
I think the math supports me on that. 🙂
Very clever, Zum!
Thanks! I’m kind of fascinated by Bochy’s career dance with .500 in his regular season career.
Nimmo bombs Bums!
Whoa, Nimmo 3-run bomb in top 9th to give Mets 4-1 lead over Bums.
Nimmo goes yard. Big HR off Maeda.
Craig I weigh in at 10 wins the rest of the way. Play Pence in the last 1-2 home games. Tip the cap and get out. Playing now is lame!!!
Mets will try to blow it of course.
Dodgers lost!

I admire this scene for other reasons, but still, it sort of applies
I agree with Blade. Slater, Duggar, Hanson — they look like just some “guys” that on any good team would be bench jockeys. But, they are all the Giants have, so play ’em. Hanson has some spark, I see him as a possible spark player. Anyway, see if they discover some magic (Duggar next Spring after his surgery). Shaw could be just another guy, too , or maybe another Judge. He needs to play to figure that out. We don’t need Pence or Blanco to play, that just is nonsense the rest of the season regardless of who is oppo pitching…
