Saying Goodbye to McCovey

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 8, 2018

Now I’m thinking Zaidi keeps Bumgarner because the haul he’d pull back really wouldn’t be worth it. And don’t you think the plan is probably to go unearth a bunch of Max Muncy’s and Chris Taylors to platoon with Belt, Crawford, etc????? You don’t need to ditch our best pitcher to find those dudes……

If you guys want to watch the Willie Mac celebration of life there is a link in here that should work:

https://abc7news.com/sports/watch-live-tomorrow-sf-giants-to-celebrate-willie-mccoveys-life/4642219/

If you are going to the celebration you should take public trans. The Giants aren’t opening Parking Lot A for some unknown reason. Sounds like Unca Chuck is gonna be there, good for him. If anyone goes please email me some pics.

If the team tanks but Bum is pitching well at the deadline, that would be the time to get something for him. If the team surprises and he’s a horse, I say ride that pony to the end.

Things about LA that impressed me were the guys who could play multiple positions and others still hit with power even in a platoon. Guys like Grandal Pederson K Hernandez and Muncy were in/out of LU and still hit .800 OPS/20 bombs.

A blogger on MLBTR said that LA was not into long term deals either so see how Bum negotiations pan out.
It’s interesting they only did QOs for FAs Grandal and Ryu–one year take it or leave it offer.

Shea mentioned that Z might grab his old buddy B Owens from the A’s to be GM, where he is currently assistant. A’s and Dodgers both do tremendous job of scouting and development; this would be great and sea change from last few seasons post 3/5.

Now that the nutjob in the White House continues to unravel, I’ll be keeping one eye on that and the other on what direction the Giants take. In any case, for my 70th B-Day in April, (unless the earth swallows me up) I’ll be in SF for 2 games of Yankees vs Giants.
I’ll enjoy nothing better than to come home with something to crow about to my Yankee friends.

The McCovey memorial service will also be on the Giants’ Bay Area NBC sports channel today. (for Direct TV: 696)

    • zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 8:24 am

Or it’s called NBC Sports Bay Area, or whatever. The new name is confusing to me.

Agree about Bum, he’s worth more to the team than anything they’d get. And, or but, if ever the time was right for a shakeup of some kind, this is it (this off season). Last time there was a major GM change, the Williams/Kent trade happened and the Giants went from worst in the division to first in the division and began a rather long run of good baseball….

Wish I was closer. Would love to go down and be a part of the McCovey memorial. RIP, Stretch.

Still ecstatic about the hiring of Zaidi. I truly think we got the best for our needs.

    And Happy Birthday to Zumiee.

I just saw a Wash Post story that Bryce Harper was offered $300 mill for 10 years by the Nats at the end of September and he at this point obviously turned it down. So that I guess is likely the floor…you still in San Dawg???

    I say ahhhhh heeeelllll noooooo…

    • sandog said, on November 8, 2018 at 10:32 am

Hell yes. 300/10. Let’s do it. I think he really wants to come out west and would take that offer from us.

    • Bozo said, on November 8, 2018 at 11:07 am

I was against signing Harper at first, but now I’m kind of on the fence.
After going 72-90 in 1992 we added a Left Fielder named Bonds and the next year we went 103-59. True we had different ownership and managers but I don’t think going from Roger Craig to Dusty created that kind of swing. Adding a guy that could hit 40+ HRs sure helped, but he also helped Matt Williams and Robby Thompson’s stats, they went from hitting 37 HRs in 1992 to 57 in 1993. Also, Harper is only 26 and the dude loves Dusty Baker so the Giants might have an in there if they want to sign him.
What I don’t like are his stats at AT&T, he is a good enough hitter to be able to adjust but how much? Also I don’t like long term contacts, I absolutely hate them for pitchers but they also make me nervous when a position player gets them. But, this is also a year when the Giants could afford it without penalties, so I’m a fence sitter right now.

    HBD, Zumie!!!

  11. unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2018 at 11:45 am

Hell no to 300/10 for Harper. We can get 3-4 middling pieces for that kind of coin.

Bummie will get more for us at the trade deadline. If we are in it, no harm, no foul. We stand pat. At least with him.

  12. zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 11:53 am

Thanks for the birthday wishes, folks! I turn 58 today. How did that happen??!! 🙂

Find a deal where he gave away large contracts during his tenure with the A’s and Bums. Never happened. Not his style. Seriously, does anyone think he’s going to “push in all his chips” on one player? I find that hilarious.

    • willedav said, on November 8, 2018 at 12:19 pm

      Agreed.
Harper I think just wants out of dysfunctional Nats org.

Happy B day Zumiee! I hope you are having a blast on your special day.

I’ve always thought Cards (along with Yanks) and SF would be match up for a deal…they are talking about LH bat/corner IF (hmmn) and have obvious need for LHP in pen.
They always have great prospects in farm too, esp for hitters.
On Daniel’s blog he really thinks Harper is special one time opportunity player but quotes column in Athletic that says Cards are interested in Golds, who he doesn’t feel is a good fit at all. Interesting take.

I think Flav mentioned the KNBR interview with Zaidi yesterday and I caught it too. Zaidi made some comments about contact rate and a few other things that struck me as a more polished/media savy version of Sabean. I’m sure he’ll have a more data driven approach but I think Sabean gets that side of the game more than he is generally given credit for. Hopefully he’s shared his super duper, double top secret ‘do some damage’ stat with Zaidi. I agree with the sentiment that it’s time for Sabean and say what you will about him I don’t see any other GMs putting together a club to take down the AL 3x.

Kinda disappointed at the middling turnout for the memorial. There were a fair amount of former Giants, and a few Willie Mac winners, and Gaylord, Orlando, Willie, Dravecky, Hacman, Boch, Buster, Kruk & Kuip. I came in on Cepeda’s speech. Very moving stuff, when he got t the point of talking about how hard it was for McCovey to simply get around. The prep to go to a game took hours, but he never wanted to miss them. And he never complained about any of it.

Kruk had some good stories as well. He said he faced McCovey with the bases loaded at the Stick near the end of his career, and his firdt curveball he threw Mac, he jacked down the right field line. As the ump was running down the line to see if it was fair or foul, the ump tripped and fell. Kruk saw that it was fair, but the ump, seeing it land foul, called it foul. Krukow struck him out, and as Kruk came off the mound, Mac said, “that was 19!” And from that moment on, McCovey and the other Giants called Kruk “19.” Bonds had some nice things to say as well.

    I’ll post some pics soon.

Very cool that you were there Chuck. My brother Mark was there too. He sent me a pic and I look forward to hearing more about it from him.

    Silver Slugger Awards just announced.
No surprise no Giants, though theirs rumors they had the most fungo award winners!
This is pretty bizzare JD Martinez won 2 Silver Slugger Awards? For Outfield&DH … whatever

    • Flavor said, on November 8, 2018 at 6:04 pm

and Kris Davis won none. Idiotic award.

    Well now…..

“With several races hanging in the balance, including the battle for the 10th Congressional District seat, nearly 80,000 ballots still need processing, Registrar of Voters Lee Lundrigan reported Wednesday night.
With a little more than 1,300 votes separating Congressional candidates Jeff Denham, a Republican, and his Democratic challenger Josh Harder, it could be weeks before an outcome is determined.
The elections office has until Dec. 6 to certify the election.”

  20. unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2018 at 8:21 pm

Kemp resigns as the sec of state for messing with the race he’s in for governor? Too funny. Florida is still in play as well. 2 seats in the senate could turn blue.

This is unreal. Trump’s appointment to replace Sessions is unconstitutional as well.

    Giannis A. is dang amazing.

    • zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 8:28 pm

      Refs let him travel, though.

      • zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 8:32 pm

All of you that played high school basketball- think how better you could have played if allowed to take 3 steps with the ball.

      • zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 8:33 pm

        Or 4 steps.

      • djloo27 said, on November 8, 2018 at 9:15 pm

        Remember palming? Ancient history.
In Brooklyn, and I guess a lot of other places, “traveling” was called “walking” – there was also a version of it known as “up & down”…

      • unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2018 at 10:02 pm

Yeah, up and down was leaving your feet to shoot, and not shooting. Do they even call palming anymore?

  22. zumiee said, on November 8, 2018 at 9:13 pm

    The Bucks look for real.

  23. unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2018 at 9:37 pm

And being able to dribble over your shoulder height and palm the shit out o the ball.

  24. unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2018 at 10:04 pm

Steph got hurt. Draymond out, and poor shooting = a blowout.
