Slow Weekend
The weirdest part of this week: no wind at all. Not even a breath of wind. The smoke just came here and sat down on us. Another fire stirred up in Boulder Creek yesterday but I wasn’t worried about it. No way for it to move anywhere with no wind. There’s talk of rain next Wednesday but I’ll believe it when I see it….
With my Big Game plans torpedoed there isn’t much going on in the sports world around here. Dubs trying to rebound from that pathetic effort in Houston. They just aren’t the same without Curry on the floor.
Note to trolls who have nothing else to do with their lives except haunt a Giants blog: You can post here but you need to be creative. If you just post the same bland, boring stuff I’m banning you. I’m basically saying “Don’t be stupid.” If that’s too much of a challenge maybe it’s best if you stay at home at a Dodgers blog with like-minded fans such as yourself…..
took a look at Panik numbers just to refresh memory. 2015 he blew up with .833 OPS, and 2017 he finished strong with .288 BA and .768 OPS. Maybe he’s an odd year type of guy.
Career .733 OPS in a yard not friendly to LHs. I think 2017hit 10 bombs almost all were on road.
He’s only struck out 200 times in his 2000 ABs for Giants and doesn’t walk much either.
NY guy who went to St. John’s. Seems like perfect fit especially with the glove for Yanks.
Dunno what went wrong for him last year (.639 OPS) here…freak injury when ahole Puig jammed his thumb going back standing up to 2b on pickoff play. Maybe just needs change of scenery to rebound.
he’s slow and weak. The 2015 OPS was an obvious outlier. And that was 4 seasons ago….Time to cut the cord with this guy, if we can find a sucker who will trade for him by all means do it. Otherwise, just DFA and move on…..
And he’s not some scrappy little dude either.
They list him at 6’1/200.
He could hit 20 by accident in the Bronx…
This Panik stuff trips me out. We aren’t seeing the same dude.
I’m the last guy to defend him but you can make argument thumb injury and pulled groin messed him up last year and the low OPS is also an outlier. Reasonable candidate for a bounce back season somewhere else in yard friendlier to LH. Just think he is overall better player than he showed last year for whatever reason.
Even if you see him as a bounce back candidate his trade value is at an all time low so I’m thinking any rebound would have to be with us. I’m not interested in waiting on this guy anymore
If you throw out last year, take a look at what Panik did 2017 when he was healthy enough to get 500 ABs.
He had an OPS of .800 vs. RHP, .700 vs. LHP. He hit for almost exact same BA, .287 vs. .290 but the difference was in the power numbers–9 of his 10 bombs vs. RHP.
Here’s another set–.636 OPS at home .878 on road with .500 (!) slugging. All 10 HRs hit on the road.
At the least seems like a Descalso type of hitter you plug in platoon wise.
I think Flav is onto something as far as way game is played today in what he said in main thread about signing the Muncys of the world.pearcewho Sox just re signed for another year at X$mil. He didn’t really ever start to hit much until after he hit 30. Now he’s cult hero Series MVP and isn’t even full time player.
Btw “what’s wrong with caring about your hair” is POTD worthy.
Also love to find original context of when Sabes lashed out at critics with Lunatic Fringe comment.
The Matt Williams trade for Kent vizcaino tavares. Some were critical of him Because Williams a fan fav and good hitter.
With hind site maybe one of the best trades ever. Kent is a HOF who gets no love and won’t make it. How can the best homerun hitter at his position EVER not even get any consideration?
And he wasn’t a bad defensive 2B either.
The HOF is an asshole…
It is becoming the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its stupidity,
The funny thing is Kent was a basically a throwin in that trade. This Guy should easily be in the HOF with his numbers at 2nd base, including all time homers at the position!
Yeah HOF is a freakin joke!
“Im bascially saying dont be stupid” lol
They cant help themselves BF, they were already born with stupid genes in their brains!
“Stupid is as Stupid does Forrest”
Follow up on Loo’s previous Splash comment: I looked into this a while ago, and it seems likely that the only parts of the Splash that you might be able to retrieve as a history are Schulman’s threads. They would have had to establish rules about when commenting on a thread closed down, with an eye towards creating a complete history rather than treating the wit and wisdom of the Splash crew as lowly ephemera. Just like the Flap now, it was possible to go back to earlier threads and post additional comments. I recall that the blogging and/or commenting software changed over that time, too, which adds to the complexity.

Maybe SFGate was more careful than I suspect . . . . I’d read the book!
No, comments close after 5 days on wordpress. I can’t see any comments on those old ones.
Interesting, so WP enforces good practices now? I thought that in the past admins controlled when commenting was turned off.
Are you referring to the old Splash comments? Yep, they are unavailable, unfortunately. I think the comments were managed by software separate from the blog technology SFGate used.
Yeah, the complete lack of air movement has been pretty bizarre. Especially when you consider it was the wind that contributed to the fires being so destructive. I’m working near the San Jose airport these days and the visibility is just terrible. We can usually see across to Avaya Stadium which is maybe a mile away. These last few days we haven’t even been able to see the airport at all. Colleagues from India have been saying the visibility is on par or worse than New Delhi which typically has some of the worse pollution in the world. Hitting a Sharks game tonight to do something indoors.
I’ve seen AA referred to as the most competitive minor league level for pitching. During his stop there Panik posted a .680 OPS. Most likely his performance last year (.639) and in 2016 (.695) is just who he is and the club has overvalued him. My biggest issue with Panik (who sucks?) is the total lack of power and that he’s slow as fuck. Since the club is pretty much stuck with him I’d like to see a competition at 2b this spring between Panik, Hansen & Slater who are both slightly younger and might still improve. If Panik can’t win the position put him on the bench to PH in situations that calls for a slappy singles hitter.
slow and weak. Excellent observation, I was starting to feel like I was the only one seeing this
This one worked. . . Old names, Ferrethead, SOAD, dean1234. Twinfan dogging Snarkk. Too funny.

Yikes!
Panik is an enigma. He won the first 2 games of last season with HRs. We see exciting flashes from him, then long droughts. Well, that describes almost all of the Giants hitters these days.
For some reason, Snarkk would really set off TF.
TF: “Snark is precisely the kind of “fan” who should be mandated by GOD to forfeit the right to ever see a baseball game as long as he lives and to watch Molina run to first base for eternity after he dies.”
Oh man. 🙂
2 thoughts about that archive Chuck posted:
1) twin could really keep a blog humming
2) twin was such a dick
Bozo the Troll, here. Is it true the Bye week right now is 4 1/2 point favorite over the Niners?
“I’m to drive you to Wichita to catch a train?”
Here in Jersey, we’ve got the Piscataway Special.
Still cracking up about Private bone spurs on Friday telling Fox News host Chris Wallace that he believes wildfires in California could be eradicated if the state had raked all 33 million acres of forest. What an embarrassment he is.
I’m currently reading Greg Miller’s book, “The Apprentice,” another of the great books out now about Trump’s Russia connections and collusion.
Whether Trump himself ever has to stand trial for anything, history will remember him as one of the biggest threats ever to our nation’s democracy.
Speaking of books, I chatted with Pawlie the other day and his book – which I bought recently, but haven’t yet read . . . I have 3 others in the queue – Chasing Willie Mays, was a finalist for the CNY Book Awards.
Trump’s made so many ridiculous statements and lies, it’s impossible to keep track (which is a strategy he uses.) His statement about people wearing disguises to vote more than once may be the stupidest thing I’ve heard in quite a while.
Looks like Unca Chuck has uncovered the link to our checkered past.
If you click on any of those “categories” to the right of the page, it will take you to hundreds of other Splash threads with comments intact…
Doing a little scanning, I don’t see anything from me. I thought I was already posting by 2007, but I guess not. I don’t remember what year I started. It might have been ’08.
wow thx. that one thread alone was pretty funny.
And Snarkk did predict that if certain stuff happened in 3 yrs they’d be good.
50 years ago at this moment Heidi was happening…
A Dave Roberts to Giants scenario. Meh.

Absolutely FUCK THAT idea!!!
Interesting to see the old Splash, good digging there, Charlie. I would also love to be able to find threads from the Splash (before it was called the Splash, I think), back around 2000. I was posting there a bunch, and there was a guy named the Captain who, in retrospect, coulda been Twin; he was always dissing other posters, calling them undiapered monkeys. I finally got off that blog when things got nasty between some posters. The Splash then came later. Good times.
Anybody here post there at that time? Pretty sure it was 2000, the year the G’s finished with the best record in the NL and then lost to the Mets in the NLDS…..
The Rockets looked pretty darned good vs. the Kings.
It’s mid-November.
Willedav, I think the lunatic fringe comment erupted after Sabean was taking heat for not bothering to even talk to Sabathia’s agents and led to a lot of fan WTF…at last meet with the guy and his reps…but as we know, Sabathia won once right with the Yanks? And we got 3×5…
Magnus, your Trouble in Dynastyland lead is a fine bit of prose. You are an excellent writer. Thanks for that, and this hangout.
Thanks PK, hope you’re doing well. We don’t see you around here anymore. Where ya living?
Syracuse. Loft apartment. Just sent 11th book to designer.
nice. You should link more of your books here, I don’t think everyone knows where to buy them
Those of you on the Twitter might enjoy this guy’s feed.
that’s better than the one he did with his nipples a few months back. How many kidnapped girls are on the other side of that basement? lqtm
Glad to hear the the Michigan player carted off the field yesterday is basically OK. It looked real scary.
The sport is real scary.
I chickened out of playing high school football. I don’t regret the decision at all.
Alex Smith not so lucky today.
somewhere in Pinole that sick fuck Denny celebrated that injury. I know it.
Pretty good season for Mookie Betts.
World Series champion
AL MVP
Gold Glove
Silver Slugger award
Did you guys see the article on The Athletic by Eno Harris recently where he detailed the 5 moves he would make to start remaking the Giants? While I don’t agree with that course of action, I give him credit for coming up with 5 realistic moves and totally explaining the reasons for them. He even came up with realistic trade value. In a nutshell his plan was this:
Trade Bum, Trade Belt, Trade Dereck Rodriguez, Trade Smardz, and next season once demand heats up, trade off any and all bullpen pieces.
He mentioned the same thing we have said around here about Panik having little trade value and also mentioned Crawford would likely not waive his no-trade with all the ties he has to the bay area.
Not only was the article great, but it generated a ton of interesting comments from both sides of the issue and Harris commented quite a bit in the comments section as well.
Great read, that I recommend if you have a subscription.
He thought one top 100 prospect for Bum was about the best we could do. His Smardz deal was a bad contract swap with the Mets for Cespedes and a prospect.
He felt we should sell high on D-Rod, who is never going to be a top of the rotation guy. Compared him to Mike Leake, which I thought was pretty good.
Belt for Greg Bird and Sonny Gray. D-Rod for one of the Brewers excess outfielders.
I let my Athletic sub end. It just wasn’t that interesting for me.
nice to see that guy agree with me on Panik as well as what Bum is actually worth.
I like his effort SanDog – but not crazy about those deals. Agree with him on D-Rod, but I think he seriously undervalues Bum, and to a lesser extent Panik and Belt. Smarj is of no real use to the Mets either, and the time to sign Cespedes was after the 2015 season (he can’t even stand up now). Belt and Smarj also have significant deal blocking clauses…
I don’t want to go down this path, but I think his values are pretty good. The Mets have to be itching to have somebody take Cespedes off their hands. Like Flav, I think Bum has limited value—that’s one of the reasons I want to keep him.
Wish we could hash it out over some cold ones…
Agree!
Should clarify, I don’t think his trade returns are good, but that they are accurate.
Curious to hear from Blade and other members of the tear-down crew as to what they think of his plan.
I read some of that archive stuff. Can’t believe I’ve been blogging about the Giants for over 11 years. Criminy, that’s a lot of words. Heading back outtaAustin. Yesterday had massive amounts of barbecue. Baby backs, green Chile sausage, garlic sausage, pork steak, brisket. Baby backs were heavenly. I’m in a meat coma…
In that archived post, Babbler sounded like Loo. Did Loo used to go by the name Babbler on the Splash?
No, Zum. Babbler was a goofball and an occasional prick.
Like everyone else there basically…
So not only did Alex Smith break his leg on the 33 year anniversary of Theismann doing the same thing (with Joe in the house watching) but it was the exact same score 23-21. What in the actual fuck is happening?
Except this time the ‘Skins lost.
true but that’s still pretty crazy
Some dates coming up:
“Nov. 20 – Last date to set 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 draft
Nov. 30 – Last date to offer contracts to unsigned players on roster (tender deadline)
Dec. 9-13 – Winter Meetings
Dec. 13 – Rule 5 draft”
Barring injury, Brees will be NFL MVP.
Not a bad game in Arizona. The Raiders now have two wins just like the Cardinals but the funny thing is Arizona’s two wins are both against the Niners? How is this possible? We won our Super Bowl against the Raiders with a third stringer with a porn star cock but even the Vegas Raiders can close out a game in Phoenix. We need to take a long hard look at ourselves the way porno girls looks at our franchise quarterback’s long hard boners. Speaking of…were Chuck and Nipper really lovers?
“Trade Bum, Trade Belt, Trade Dereck Rodriguez, Trade Smardz, and next season once demand heats up, trade off any and all bullpen pieces.”
‘Dog, without seeing the actual article, I still like the housecleaning he proposes and his value assessment of the pieces mentioned. He’s especially accurate about DRod, i.e., although not a hologram – he will come back to Earth in his sophomore year. This isn’t just me saying it, but numerous analysts (including FanGraphs Steamer projections) predicting a big fall for him next season. So yeah, sell high while the gettin’ is good.
Regarding Panik, I seriously think he will be DFAed . . . Read this ESPN article about 2nd baseman being a dime a dozen next season:
http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/25184857/buster-mlb-buzz-second-basemen-dime-dozen-winter
However, in regard to the aforementioned, I still stand by what I said a few days ago, where I am down with whatever the boy wonder decides regarding trades, roster releases, and free agent signings. I have 100% confidence he will lead us out of the wilderness. It may take his entire 5 year contract to do it, but he will. I also don’t see any Harper signing, as that’s never been his MO with the Bums and A’s (doing a mega deal).
By the by, David Robertson is his own agent. He talks about it in this article. I think it’s great that he has the confidence and knowledge to be his own agent.

Thanks for sharing SD! 🙂
