They Can Have Him
So the Dodgers are now IN on the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. I’d personally be fine with that. Saddle a 300 million dollar deal that will come up woefully short of paying off for them? Hell yeah.
Harper is going to sink whatever franchise he signs with. He’s got a nice beard and great hair–his two most important possessions.
Until that guy figures out how to deal with the shift he’s going to be nothing but an on again, off again power hitter. Machado is a better all around player, they should have just tried to keep him.
As he ages, I could see him having a Matt Stairs type of ending to his career….
Phils got rid of C Santana (and high prospect) and acquired Segura.
Santana had almost exact same slugging/OPS numbers as Belt, hitting in bandbox warm weather Philly. He did have 24 HRs. He also makes almost exact same $$$, for one less year, and is a year older.
IF Z wanted to trade Belt I think that is very doable though it might bring back someone with similar salary.
I’m really afraid LA makes a big move to improve the team but signing Harper would surprise me. You could make the argument Puig has had better seasons last couple years, and is of course way cheaper. Wonder how often Roberts analytics guys would have him on bench instead of Kike Hernandez and how that might go over.
Noticed D Dedmon out of USC played C for Hawks last night. Warriors did have this guy briefly 5 yrs ago…have to look into what happened at the time but man their draft and development of bigs sucks.
I have no recollection of dedmon as a Dub, gonna look this up later
thx let me know. I don’t really recall what was up…I liked him in college though I think he left early.
It just bugs me GS can’t find anyone better than Bell or Zaza. Cousins could stay but I doubt it. No idea why no one else wanted to take chance on him either.
Dedmon? Nope. Me either. It’s the Robert Parrish/Joe Barely Cares curse. Parrish was their last great, or even decent, big man.
Puig AND Harper on the same team would be some fun shit to watch. Between the preening, the bat licking, the coach humping and the hair shows, it’d be an epic disaster.
Harper could decide on short term contact with opt out right?
What Flav said. However, what really cracks me up about this potential scenario, is that a basketball player is overseeing the pitch for Harper. That’s fucking hilarious!

I love Magic but he knows very little about baseball.
Harper met with Magic and Jim Thome yesterday (as, apparently, the White Sox are in on him). Who would knock your socks off, Magic or fucking Jim Thome, lol
For red-ass like Harper, it’s prolly Thome.
It would ratchet up the rivalry a little bit more, that’s for sure.
Kyler Murray, likely to win the Heisman Trophy this year, is probably going to forgo an NFL career and go with the A’s who selected him as the 9th overall pick. Who said football players are dumb?
Baseball: more money, guaranteed contracts, and hugely less violent and less dangerous. Good choice for him.
If I had his skills, just the high risk of getting CTE would scare the shit out of me and cause me to go with baseball.
Unless you are a quarterback, yeah, baseball is the way to go.
If the Dogs sign Harper, we need to get Stricknyne back.
Sober take on the state of the club’s finances per MLBTR.

TLDR gif version

“While Major League spending has increased dramatically over the time period above, the Giants haven’t allocated substantial resources to international amateur bonuses. It seems as though the cash increases were focused nearly exclusively on the Major League roster that made regular trips to late October throughout this decade.” It’s a shame that SF hasn’t developed really any significant international talent for the big club’s use the last few years…
BTW that is an awesome gif.
IDK wherein hell you guys get this stuff, but it’s great the way you use ’em in context. I’m trying to think of what the possible reality of this “firetruck” situation was — did this come out of Russia or some Eastern Block ‘stan where there is always some crazy crap going on? Either that or Louisiana…
Corbin to Nats for 6Y $140M.
He’s 13 days older than Bumgarner…
Loo, you would agree Corbin is much, much better than Madbum at this stage of their careers, right?
13 days older, and a whole lot richer.
I don’t know who’s really better, kind of apples and oranges. But, the high value makes me happy; IMO that pushes up Bum’s trade value. It’s bad if the Z man has been told to sign him instead to a LT deal…
I would not agree, Blade.
If you had to win one game for all the marbles who would you start?
Like I said, “. . . at this stage in their careers.” Easily, I would select Corbin today. In 2014? Madbum.
Just my take, but the Nats are very, very fortunate that Harper told them to pound salt when they offered him $300 million. They don’t have to sign Harper when an outfield of Juan Soto, Victor Robles and Adam Eaton, with Michael Taylor off the bench, would still project as one of the best in the game. I have no idea why any team would want to squander that many millions by signing the inconsistent Harper. Especially, after a .249/.393/.496 season (and minus-26 defensive runs saved).
Smart move using their resources elsewhere (e.g., Corbin) IMO. Right now, I think their only weakness is the bullpen.
I think there is zero chance of it, but if the Giants did sign Harper, it would be the worst possible roster move for this team…
agree with all of this.
snarkk, go to gify and just put in what’s on your mind-you’ll find what you need. That one has got to be eastern euro or Russian. The blurb on international players caught my eye too. The ongoing lack of information regarding Samardzija is sort of odd to me as well. Dude is just done?
Not impressed…

The analytics guys are ga-ga for strikeouts.
A strikeout per inning used to be a big deal.
Not anymore…
Kings led the Suns 36-9 after one quarter. The Suns are really bad.
Bum’ll get 6/$165M from someone.
Whoever it is will be thrilled with 3 good years and a title…
That’s a ballsy call, my man. If we’re stuck with him I’d settle for him staying healthy and cobbling together serviceable starts for a few years before his shoulder flies off one day. John Lund was yammering on about why a team would *overpay* for him and he cited his work in the post season. That was going on half a decade ago…….
You wonder how sustainable what Corbin did last year will be going forward, as opposed to 2 meh years before that. Nats trying to get leg up on division rivals right now.
It is nice to have him out of NL West tho.
and speaking of guys it would be nice to have leave the NL West, wonder what AZ does with Golds. Or for that matter, what Rox do with Arenado who is also in walk year (I think).
Does this stat line affect how anyone would view value of N Arenado who will be FA in 2020:
last year splits
Home .347 ,424 ,681 with 23 HRs 1.105 OPS
Road .248 .325 447 with 15 HRs .772 OPS
No. Those 15 road numbers would be a huge improvement compared to anyone on the Giants.
MLB winter meetings begin Sunday through the 13th . . . My top 5 predictions:
1. Golds is gone. Where? I don’t know, but his contract is the easiest to move for the Snakes. Yeah, they would like to move Grienke too or instead, but his contract is too onerous.
2. Gray to the Padres.
3. Madbum to the Phillies. They missed out on Corbin and this is the last chance to have a co-ace lefty to go along with their ace righty, Nola. If the Giants don’t move Madbum during the winter meetings, the decision will be considered again during the July/August trade deadline. The obvious risk is that his performance continues to go south.
4. Harper to the Phillies.
5. Machado to the Phillies (if they can convince him to play 3rd).
Side prediction – Puig is traded, especially if the Bums sign Harper.
Cards reportedly close to acquiring Goldschmidt. If Zaidi sits on his hands a little longer all of the worthwhile trade prospects dry up and he gives us some version of “well, we kicked the tires on that one. Due diligence and whatnot. yada, yada, yada.”
Yeah Cards get Goldy in a steal trade.
Weaver&Kelly lol.🤣
Not that the Giants have anybody the Cards want, but that RH power bat at 1st that gives you 30 Jack’s &100 ribs would at least get my juices flowing some..
And a Giant nemesis is out of the division.
It’s cool that 4 teams in the NL East are trying to improve and be competitive. The Marlins? Umm, they got rid of that fish statue. lqtm.
If the Fodgers do land Harper, we would need to bring Strickland back…bring hair boy on. Still think he ends up in Chicago if the dollars are comparable…
And Goldschmidt will be a free agent after next season along with Ozuna…Goldy will never sign with the Gigantes. I much rather have Trout than any of the Harpers, Machados or Goldschmidts…
Since I’m fully onboard with a tear-down, I don’t see the point of a big free agent signing. We don’t know how much freedom Zaidi has, but he needs to start jettisoning all the big contracts he can. Bum isn’t a big contract, so he’s his own separate category. I see him as a mid-season trade, because I think that Baer will see that as a nice compromise between the “trade Bum” and “don’t trade Bum” camps. Bum should go onto the open market after next season and find his market value, for his own sake. He doesn’t owe the Giants anything. He’s been a super-hero over the years. it would be cool for him to get a huge contract, if someone is willing to give him one.
Agree with Zum all the way.
As we know the problem with getting rid of the big contracts is how?
The Giants should be ashamed of themselves for the way they’ve treated Bumgarner.
I almost hope he signs with the Dodgers and pitches them to 5 titles…
Then me and the Roooster can hit Barney’s Beanery…
A couple things that not many, if any here, will agree with me on.
1) Zaidi is an ex Dodger and an ex A, both rivals of ours, until he does something to help our team that also doesn’t help either of those clubs, I won’t trust the fuck.
2) What I remember most about JP Ricciardi is that he said fuck you to his scouts so he could draft Ricky Romero instead of Troy Tulowitzki.
3) I don’t want to see a Padres, Marlins, Reds, Mariners, White Sox etc. style of rebuild (complete tear down). After staying under the cap, the Giants have money and would be able to do a (stay) competitive rebuild like the Red Sox and Yanks tend to do. If you can’t trade a bad contract, cut it but keep adding pieces.
4) I think some of Bumgarner’s problems are due to lingering issues to the shoulder thing, so I do think he’ll bounce back. Why trade him now? You can trade him if needed at the deadline or go the whole season and give him a qualifying offer, worse that happens we get a draft pick. If he pitches really well, sign him and build around him.
5) You really want prospects and to dump salary, then pony up Baby Pudge and Longo. You get rid of a large salary, you also will get prospects and a membership in the Padres way…
6) NL West will be weak this year and can be had, the giants should go for it.
7) Puig will be able to get around $11 mil in arb, not many teams want to pay full price for that E ticket and hopefully that includes Zaidi.
8-10) I’m actually looking forward to Spring Training, Opening Day and the 2019 season.
I would be ok with a tear it down to the studs rebuild, if that were necessary. I have confidence that Z will be able to work his under the radar magic. The way the Giants are hamstrung with these terrible contracts I don’t see them making any huge moves, throwing good money after bad. Either way you slice it, they’re gonna suck for a few years.
They’re gonna suck for a long, long time.
It’s your grandchildren’s problem.
We got ours x 3…
We don’t eat contracts. It got Duke Neukom fired. THe powers that be won’t go that far if the last 20 years have told us anything.
