A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Status Quo

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 7, 2018

Schoop gone, he signed with the Twins. Royals probably signing Billy Ham. Not sure if this off season could get more boring for a Giants fan. Winter meetings coming up but nothing seems to happen at those anymore except a lot of steaks get devoured and the strippers get rained on a little harder.

I really don’t care what Zaidi does. His pulsating brain is bigger and grander than I could ever hope to understand. All I know is that I couldn’t be more tired of every single player on our team. Individually they put you to sleep, collectively they lose regularly.

I guess this is the price we paid for winning 3 in 5.

Luis Vabuena and Jose Castillo died in car accident playing winter ball in Venezuela.
Yes this is the guy who was Giants 3b in 2008 , one of Sabes darker years (72-90).
Check out the roster when you have chance.
Fred was in LF, hit .282 with .791 OPS, second only to Ray Ray as top Giants hitter. Which says a lot right there obviously.

Found a wonderful book based on ESPN feature Basketball: A Love Story. Read a section on ABA (thx for the tip from SanDog) which features interviews and comments from players coaches writers, just fantastic. All sections (pros college going back to 50s 60s to LB and Curry) are like this so it moves pretty fast and there are 2 separate blocks of photos in the middle including one of Dr. J wearing #32 of Nets with full fro.

Love to be able to see some of these shows if they come back around or on vid anywhere.
    Meantime a great read.

Phills have hired Kevin Frandsen to do a lot more radio work next year.
Thankfully, that will mean less of him on KNBR, hopefully gone entirely…

Jose Castillo died in a car crash this morning. I remember him vaguely during some dark years before we won beauty #1

  8. unca_chuck said, on December 7, 2018 at 2:04 pm

Yeah, and some other guy with him. The DR ain’t no place to be driving apparently. Didn’t Jose \Uribe die in a car crash there? And like 3 other guys?

Hopefully there will be *something* happening this off season, and soon. The way I see it, the Giants are likely going with a 2-front approach: a bit of a rebuild (not a tear-down) by giving some youngsters a good look, and also trying to field a team that is still competitive throughout the season. If that’s the case, the FO would really need at least 3 major new pieces, maybe 4, and the needs are spread out: 1) Outfield: a middle to top OFer to anchor the group of mostly younger players. Someone like Brantley. Fill around him with Mac, Slater, Duggar, and Shaw. In any kind of rebuild, you have to look at the kids in hand first anyway, so give ’em the 1st half of the season to see what they can do. 2) Infield: need a good young-ish 3rd bagger. I don’t mind Wrongo and Pablo on the bench, good pop for pinch-hitting, etc., but could really use a good player in that spot. No idea who’s available. 3) Rotation: need a middle to top end starter. Cueto and Smarge are question marks. I don’t mind Suarez and maybe Stratton as 4 and 5, but without bringing in someone new, they’re 3 and 4…. not good. And finally, maybe a 4), if Posey’s rehab isn’t going well, might need a new catcher, as they’re reportedly considering anyway. Bullpen is fine but can easily pick up another arm or two along the way. So that’s 3 major pieces, maybe 4. Plus a trade here or there (Panik). That would be a very busy off-season. Please, just no more McCutcheons or Wrongos…..

Does this count as Farny’s 1st sign?
Giants sign Catcher Cameron Rupp formerly with the Phils to a minor league contract tied plus invite to camp for 750K if he sticks to the show to start the year. Rupp hit 14 bombs last year in Philly, which would of tied Brandon Belt for 4th last year.
Could be a good sign, only cause the Giants are carrying only 2 catchers on their active roster and no depth in the minors to speak of..

    • Flavor said, on December 7, 2018 at 6:18 pm

I like Rupp, always have. Right handed catcher with pop. Zero risk, good signing.

    • pawliekokonuts said, on December 7, 2018 at 8:07 pm

I love the nicknames you guys come up with. Farny. Or maybe that really is what he’s called??

Baggs tweets on a couple of front-office hires:

#sfgiants have hired a new pro scouting director, sources tell @TheAthleticMLB : Zack Minasian, formerly a special advisor to the GM in Milwaukee. Started in baseball as an 11-year-old assistant to his father, Zack Sr., the longtime clubhouse attendant for the Texas Rangers.

Another important front-office hire for #sfgiants under Farhan Zaidi: Michael Holmes will replace John Barr as amateur scouting director and draft point person, sources tell @TheAthleticMLB. Holmes was assistant scouting director with the A’s, where he has worked since 2004.

I can’t say I remember Jose Castillo. And there’s like 26 Castillos who have played MLB, it seems.

  17. pawliekokonuts said, on December 7, 2018 at 8:03 pm

Did you know Zaidi was born in Canada, eh?

P-in-asia, the Giants aren’t going to park Longo on the bench at $14.5 mill per. Not gonna happen. I’d love to see, it but highly doubt it. Apparently Smarglebargle was activated from the DL and put on the 40-man on 10/29. He hopes to be ready by spring training. Oh boy.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 7, 2018 at 9:28 pm

Yeah, Charlie, I wasn’t really thinking they *would* do that, just that they *should* do that… who knows, maybe with new management… ah, nevermind…

Rupp and Lovegrove battery mates. Lovegrove replaces Strickland in the uncontrolled high heat department, hopefully he doesn’t replace him in the hothead department.
