Wild Card Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 5, 2019

The Dodgers have won the NL West 6 straight years. I did not know that. Do they have a ring ceremony for that before each opener? I think they do….

Anyway, we needed a new thread. NFL chatter?

Indy +2. Luck looks healthy again and while I like Watson a lot, gimmie Luck in a game like this. Points too? Sure, thanks.

Dallas -2.5. Seattle has been pretty gimmicky this year with all the running. My guess is that the Cowboys roll in this one….

Baltimore -2.5. Everyone is jizzing about Rivers getting a ring. Who cares? Baltimore D seems to be clicking right now, I’ll go with the Ravens giving 2.5

Philly money line. If I were betting it the ML is where I’d go with this. +220 is a little low for my tastes on a -6 spread for an NFL road playoff game but I really think Chicago is overrated and I believe in Foles magic.

Those are my picks. What are yours?

question for you east coasters: what do you think of Mike Francesca? Recently I’ve been following a guy on twitter that just uploads all of his dumbest moments on the radio. So I’m obviously biased since that’s all I see. But does this guy know anything? How has he kept his job for this long?
I say the same thing about Radnich who knows nothing about sports and has the same 3 talking points since he started the gig 30 years ago: 1) he equates everything to how much a guy makes or how someone is getting paid or trying to get paid 2) almost everything he says has to do with “when you’ve been in the business as long as I have…” 3) he only cares about watching something if it’s entertaining or has a star player playing (ie, if Steph is sitting out there game he doesn’t watch the game)
In terms of sports and the details of it and the players etc….Gary Radnich knows literally nothing

I’m not sure who Mike Francesca is, so I can’t help ya.

Back when NBC owned KRON, I thought Radnich did a good job. When KRON became independent and Radnich was about the only one still at the station, I thought he became an arrogant, biased little baby. I stopped listening to him even before I left SF in 08.

Joe’s outfit looks like it was made by both Polly and Ester.

If you’ve ever seen Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on the MLB Network, the hyperactive guy with the loud voice; he and Francesca used to have a very popular long-running sports radio show in the New York City area. Russo eventually left, and Francesca has a solo radio show now, I think.

The Chargers always disappoint in the playoffs.
But I’m predicting they play the Saints in the Super Bowl.
    Some serious crazy talk.

I’ll occasionally tune in to Francesa if I’m on the road; there’s not much of an alternative if one wants to listen to NYC sports talk radio in the afternoon, although I usually listen to a couple of cool college-radio type FM stations these days. Sometimes he has good things to say, and it’s kinda fun to hear him go off on a rant. But more often than not his opinions are lazy and ill-informed, and he’s become even more arrogant and condescending to his listeners, as idiotic as some of them are, than usual. Perhaps his most annoying trait is that he’s a terrible interviewer. He’ll have on a guest who you’re interested to hear, but Francesa constantly interrupts by injecting his opinion on whatever is being discussed.

Yes, Zum, Russo and Francesa had a very popular afternoon show for about 20 years before Russo left for Sirius.

Francesca got inducted into the radio HOF this year. I only know this because Jim Nance does a weekly spot on KNBR in the morning and he said he gave the speech that inducted him into the HOF. Nance is pretty legit, he was glowing about the guy but most of that was *longevity* stuff. Then I started following this guy….
      https://twitter.com/BackAftaThis?lang=en
and I was shocked at what a dumbass Francesca is…..
thanks for the east coast take, Mac

6 straight NL champions stills equals 6 straight playoff “LOSER RINGS”!! Fuck LA!!
I like the Colts with Luck who’s clicking on all cyclinders with a OL that’s been solid with only 16 sacks allowed all year in over 600 passes for Luck!Colts did a excellent job in the draft getting OL men to keep him upright!!

Seattle over Dallas..I’ll take an experienced Russell Wilson over Dak Prescott anyday anytime.Wilson’s never lost a 1st rd playoff game in his career and that streak will continue!
Taking SD over Balt just cause of Rivers and a much better offensive weapons over a rookie QB in his 1st playoff game! Should be a grinding game though but Chargers prevail..

Bears 🐻 over Philly their D reminds me of that 86 team,Foles dicey with his ribs, that Chicago will feast on and maybe knock him out of the game! Philadelphia lucked into the playoffs, their luck has run out..

I hate when interviewers do that. I change the channel.
On MSNBC, Chris Hayes and Chris Matthews do that. They’re awful. I ignore their shows. Lawrence O’Donnell lets his guests speak. I like his show.

Damon Minor is the River Cats’ hitting coach?
    No wonder we’re screwed.

    • alleykat69 said, on January 5, 2019 at 12:54 pm

We’re screwed still with the 2 headed idiots we have on the ML staff in Schu&Powell now.
Minor ?lol guess the Giants like Mendoza line hitting coaches, works well for a team that can’t hit..

Stupid fat-ass Francesa, the voice of NY sports radio for 25 years, keeps calling him BAUMGARDNER.
    What a fuckin’ idiot…

    • djloo27 said, on January 5, 2019 at 1:34 pm

And of course the bully goes on to berate the caller who corrected him. One of my favorites was a few years ago. He was arguing with a fan about the aging Derek Jeter:

Francesa: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE LED THE LEAGUE IN AN OFFENSIVE CATEGORY???
Caller: Well, he led the league in hits last year…
      Francesa: HITS ISN’T A CATEGORY!!!

Colts putting the early ass whipping on Texans 14-0 dominating running&throwing the pigskin!

My picks are off and running…

  12. unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 3:09 pm

Yeah, I have Indy (Before the game started), Seattle, Balt, and the Phiily Pholes Phemonomenon.

Much as I would like to see the former SanDawgs go far into the playoffs, I think Balt’s defense will crush them. You have to wonder about the 21 year old QB starting his first playoff game, though. Lamar could make some costly mistakes.

I would be terribly conflicted if Dawgs and Chiefs met in the playoffs.

  13. zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 3:29 pm

For the Texans, if your biggest star is a defensive lineman, that’s usually not a good sign.

  14. zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 3:36 pm

Kings/Warriors again tonight. At some point, I expect the Warriors to just blow out the Kings in one of these games.

  15. djloo27 said, on January 5, 2019 at 4:26 pm

As San Dog reminded me the other day KC is 0-4 lifetime vs. Colts in playoffs.
    Probably be 6-7 point fave?

  16. alleykat69 said, on January 5, 2019 at 4:33 pm

There will be no partying in the state of Texas tonight, after the Cowboys lay a field dump 💩against Seattle tonight! Which will make Kat’s picks 2-0 going into tomorrow’s matchups..

  23. willedav said, on January 5, 2019 at 4:59 pm

Seattle and Dallas? Too bad one has to advance.
I’m watching college b-ball starting with Duke.
Man locals are bad. Cal got swept (and the gals lost at home) Cards got rolled by UCLA guy who just took ove for Alford. USF probably best of bunch.
And out Jersey way, Seton Hall is dominating.

Cardinal women are #6 in country

      • willedav said, on January 5, 2019 at 5:12 pm

yes nice team. TVD can recruit and coach and is younger/ more athletic this year. Men will be lucky to be 6th in league, and Pac12 sucks.

    • Macdog said, on January 5, 2019 at 5:17 pm

MU got win #2 today, beating St. Peter’s after stunning Penn on New Year’s Eve.

Ok late here but I had the Colts with the ML (had that pick in a ESPN streak game) and going same on Seattle. I’ll take the Bears and Ravens tomorrow…

Whenever I was anywhere near NY in theb90s and early 2000s…I had to put on Mike and the Mad Dog (everyone here should know Mad Dog Russo from Sirius XM and MLB channel but especially becuae he is a total die hard Giants fan). Was just plain entertaining sports radio and just listening to the NY attitude front the two was further entertaining. The guy on YouTube who does a Francesca impersonation is hysterical. But Francesca on his own from what little I have heard since Mad Dog left (didnt the Yes network also telecast his radio show???) is surly and does not really care about what callers ever say. But he has done Bill Simmons’ podcast a number of times and in that format I think listening to him has been interesting.

  28. gianthead said, on January 5, 2019 at 6:46 pm

That fantastic athelete in Sebastian Janikowski just pulled a hammy kicking a fucking a ball..

    • unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 6:59 pm

      Seabass ate that fantastic athlete.

    • alleykat69 said, on January 5, 2019 at 7:02 pm

When your 75 those things happen.
Shit Seabass was drafted in 2000??
Guessing only Vinateari (sp) is older than him?

  29. gianthead said, on January 5, 2019 at 6:51 pm

And the thing about the old Francesca and Mad Dog show was that it was on the legendary WFAN radio station and it has probably an even stronger radio signal than KNBR. We would be in Rhode Island on vacation for many years and you could hear the FAN clearly all day long…

  30. unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 6:58 pm

As a kid I could listen to Giants games from Sun Valley Idaho. Don’t know if that still works or not.

  31. zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 7:15 pm

3 on 1 fast-break three-point shot. Sigh. I’ll never get used to that.

  32. willedav said, on January 5, 2019 at 7:51 pm

Mac, yeah monmouth doubles the win total and beats St. Peter’s.
did you see end of Fla-So Carolina game? Fla ties it up with FT 3 seconds left. SC throws 90 ft inbounc pass to C, who goes up and catches it behind everyone (with a push off) and dunks it home.

Man Warriors just don’t have same intensity on D this year. Kings right back in it 50-49 after being down 16.

    • Macdog said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:04 pm

Just watched it. No one guarding the inbounds, that’s criminal.

      • djloo27 said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:15 pm

As a player, that was Phil Jackson’s specialty…

  35. Bozo said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:30 pm

Working out by pushing cars in PR? Not sure if this is such a good idea for Rodriguez but hey, the Giants did get rid of their strength coach so maybe it’s every man for himself.

  36. willedav said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:37 pm

Kings giving Warriors all they can handle and then some.. they are fun to watch.

  37. unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Looks like the dubs are the ones getting stomped. 18 to 4 run by the Kings puts them up by 9

  38. zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 8:47 pm

Finishing the deal against the great teams has been an obstacle for the Kings this season. It’s part of the learning curve.

  39. zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 9:13 pm

End of game execution is so crucial.

  40. unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 9:14 pm

Right. Fox with a costly turnover.

  41. willedav said, on January 5, 2019 at 9:15 pm

3 bad possessions from Kings there–no ball movement nothing going to hoop. Bad pass and 2 bad shots cost them the game.

    • zumiee said, on January 5, 2019 at 9:34 pm

Yeah, just Bogdanovic flinging up bad shots at the end. They need to get better at the end.

  42. unca_chuck said, on January 5, 2019 at 9:16 pm

Then again,KD has made a few turnovers late.

Off topic (lqtm) . . . I’m down with everything that Zaidi is doing. A couple of weeks ago, I think San Dog alluded to some Flappers not being okay with what’s going on. If that’s the case, what did you expect Zaidi to do with this sh*t sandwich of a roster? Most of our existing roster is dead weight, i.e., old as Methuselah ball players, along with their wretched contracts that no one wants. Get serious if you’re thinking blockbuster deals. Not going to happen. As Flavor and a few others have indicated, this is as good as it gets this off season. Yeah, there may be one significant pick up before April, but it wont be anyone that’s a game changer for our club. Any significant movement will be dependent on our existing roster having “show me” first halves and praying that they can be moved for decent pieces prior to the trade deadline. Honestly, I am not sure any of our stiffs can rise to the occasion.

In this situation, I like using the “jackass analogy.” Specifically, Zaidi could add a silver saddle to a jackass, but it would still be a jackass. Zaidi is doing fine with what he has to work with. I like these small deals. We’re in the wilderness years folks. Understand that and you’ll be able to get through next season.
