Wait, Wait…That’s What We Do
What is this, like the 3rd year in a row where nothing happens in the off season? I’m not just talking about the Giants, who Loo deftly nailed cold as a 95 loss team this year. Nobody is doing anything. Collusion? Tough for me to feel sorry for anyone getting affected by a 200 million dollar deal instead of the *uncolluded* 300 million dollar deal they were seeking. We’ll see.
Until then we pass our time stories, other sports, trivia, and recipes.
The last band to tell us to *Wait, Wait*
I’m convinced last year was collusion. Owners of big $$ clubs all decide in the same season to stay below lux tax? Not a coincidence more of a backroom deal over cigars.
“I’m not giving that unprintable’s client one more dime than what I want.”
to a chorus of hear hear.
White Lion was horrible—-and I’m a guy who likes a lot of those Hair Metal bands.
Everybody is doing nothing????? I think it’s just us that has done nothing. Preet Bharra or whatever this guy’s name is we got from Baltimore ain’t doing it for me.
Dr. Z has been a huge flop so far. If Sabean and Evans were in charge and our off season looked like this, you guys would be crucifying them.
I’m anti-teardown, so I am glad he has not made trades. I’m still holding out hope we add some value free agents before long.
I think ZMan was genius the other day to acquire Sofia Vergara. Columbian pedigree, in great shape, will be a great clubhouse add…
I thought the Pat Dinizio signing was solid as well. Versatile—can sing and play guitar and a good leader/frontman. More of a lead by example guy. Not a big rah-rah guy.
RIP PD. You were a great one.
I don’t think losing Hunter Pence makes this a 95 loss team.
Maybe Zaidi feels that with just a couple of tweaks this team will compete. We’ve already leapfrogged AZ, LA has what, two RH hitters? I’m telling you guys, one more starter, another catcher and a ML level OFer and we are good to go. There are plenty of players left in FA land to fill those positions.
I stand by what I said a few days ago . . . “I’m down with everything that Zaidi is doing. A couple of weeks ago, I think San Dog alluded to some Flappers not being okay with what’s going on. If that’s the case, what did you expect Zaidi to do with this sh*t sandwich of a team? Most of our existing roster is dead weight, i.e., old as Methuselah ball players, along with their wretched contracts that no one wants. Get serious if you’re thinking blockbuster deals. Not going to happen. As Flavor and a few others have indicated, this is as good as it gets this off season. Yeah, there may be one significant pick up before April, but it wont be anyone that’s a game changer for our club. Any significant movement will be dependent on our existing roster having “show me” first halves and praying that they can be moved for decent pieces prior to the trade deadline. Honestly, I am not sure any of our stiffs can rise to the occasion. In this situation, I like using the “jackass analogy.” Specifically, Zaidi could add a silver saddle to a jackass, but it would still be a jackass. Zaidi is doing fine with what he has to work with. I like these small deals. We’re in the wilderness years folks. Understand that and you’ll be able to get through next season.”
Personally, I think Loo is a bit optimistic. In lieu of the above, I’m thinking 100 + loses as the roster stands today.
I think there were some Flappers out there who honestly thought that if we could just get rid of Sabean and Evans and bring in a shiny new progressive baseball guy he would have the magic power to fasttrack the transformation of this team through creative trades and moves that Sabean and Evans were too stupid to see.
Not happening.
There is one way to make the next couple of seasons interesting and to give us fans some hope of sniffing the playoffs. And that is to open the checkbook and sign some free agents.
I certainly underestimated how bad this team was. Consequently, my bad that I was probably one of those Flappers you were talking about Peter. Fast forward today, I have smelled the coffee. No one, not even Zaidi and his brilliance (and I do think he is brilliant) can make this shit sandwich of a team palatable. In effect, no one wants any of our players, with the possible exception of MadBum and some bullpen pieces.
Regarding your 2nd paragraph, I respectfully disagree. The checkbook would have to be WIDE OPEN. Moreover, our existing players are “anchors” and are going to be worse next season. Sort of a moot point IMO. Again, I think we are in the wilderness for at least 2, possibly more seasons.
Baer refuses to tell it like it is to Giants fans.
He’s just hoping for a pointless ‘close to.500’ season this year, and ‘close to 3 million’ tickets sold.
Actually, he’d be pretty happy with 2.5 million tickets sold.
This off season has to be driving Baer nuts. He is all about bells and whistles and sexy names and having something to market—even if the new pieces don’t make a ton of sense.
I don’t think Drew Ferguson and Mike Gerber are what he had in mind.
Nice Smithereens reference, SD!
Zaidi needs to blow up the current Giants roster to smithereens. 🙂
I was hoping you’d notice.
The White Lion guy didn’t learn from Frampton: the big hair can ultimately be an unbearable burden. A Faustian bargain.
I know I’m a bit of a dreamer, but I still think our Catcher/Infield group can be one of the best in the National League. Longo HAS to be better than last year. We all know Belt has a breakout season in him somewhere. Panik and Craw are both volatile, but I still think they can put together solid years. And maybe this surgery allows Buster to regain some pop.
If we can just get some hitters in the outfield I think we can compete. Who knows, maybe Gerber and Ferguson can do something for us. We were scaring .500 last year before we threw up the white flag and shut down Buster and dumped McCutchen for chump change.
I’m all for some Josh Donaldson type moves. Short contracts, for top dollar. Bring some bats in here, stat.
I agree. My only issue with the infield is Panik’s slow ass on the basepaths but he’s solid on the defensive side and maybe some camp competition will be good for him. I’d rather not see Hundley return but that’s just me. Assuming Duggar is penciled in at CF the defense up the middle is plus. As much as I liked Pence his contract coming to an end and departure is addition by subtraction imo. Williamson, Slater, Shaw and whoever the hell Drew Furguson is can sort out the other two positions with competition from non roster invitees or a late spring move and maybe the club gets league average production from the outfield. I’d like to see Holland return but hey whatever. It’s a new year, let’s be positive!
ZMan will be a miracle worker if he can offload any of SFs albatross deals for some young talent. Other than Madbum, which is the only marketable contract. ZMan needs to do that trade and believe he will do before end of Spring unless Bum is injured. Giants need talented minor leaguers. That top SF minor league player list the other day was scary. The roster in League Of Their Own was better…

Shaw listed as our #4 prospect was a little shocking. I view him as JR Phillips redux. I hope I’m wrong.
I’m completely fired up for a Duggar/Drew Ferguson platoon in center field. Sign that Harper fella and put him in right. Let the best of the other flotsam and jetsam play left.
Let’s Do Thi!s
i’ve had that goddamn White Lion song in my head all day…..
That’s some serious Dick Cheney-approved torture.
Malcolm Brogdon has missed one free throw this season. That’s pretty incredible.
Out of how many? Calvin Murphy was the best I ever saw…
71 for 72. Crazy!
it’s outrageous. And he’s 2/2 tonight so that’s 73/74. I wonder how many he hits in a row at practice
Welcome to Oracle Park (at China Basin), home of a huuuuuuge new scoreboard.
would it have killed Pavlovic (who blocked me like a girl on twitter over nothing 2 years ago) to ask what Oracle paid for this? That would have been far more interesting than the entire rest of this story.

Schulman says it’s a 20 year deal — I skipped over the money.
“Terms of the deal are not being disclosed, but in an interview Wednesday, Giants President and CEO Larry Baer termed it “very much in line with other recent naming-rights deals for top-tier facilities.”
“That would make it worth $300 million to $350 million, a significant increase over the roughly $100 million the Giants received over 22 years in the original naming-rights and marketing deal that they signed with an AT&T predecessor in 1996.”
300-350mil seems like an incredible amount and much higher than I would have guessed.
maybe the good news here is that Baer has found a lot of things to keep him occupied — other than baseball
Brogdon 4/4 tonight so far. God I want him to miss one, I’m gonna obsess on this hard if he doesn’t
That’s 98.684210526315789473684210526316%
Minnesota ‘s Michael Williams made 97 consecutive FT’s back in 1993 for the alltime record..
In 1988, I consecutively threw 136 pairs of socks into my laundry basket from across the room..
i feel like you could have easily crested 200 if you hadn’t been interrupted by something. I wonder what finally distracted you?
I think Murphy and Ricky Pierce each hit about 75 in a row in their heyday.
How many in a row does Brodgon have?
how great was this shit? Wish teams still did stuff like this
I think Z is holed up making plans, that’s why it seems that nothing is being done, but planning is *something* even if we don’t see it yet. I’d rather this whole thing unfold slowly over time (the wilderness years are vast, afterall) than he do the kind of *nothing* done last off-season (Longo, Cutch, etc.), none of which helped the team over the long term, at all. Guessing that he’s also not paying much attention to the Harper/Machado nonsense. It’s still only early January. Plenty of time. Making the plans. The Planmeister. One can only hope.
Bummer of a name change for the ballpark.
I prefer the name Stouffer’s Frozen Lasagna Field.
Stouffer’s could have afforded it.
Can’t help it, but when I hear or see the name Brogdon, all I can think of is ginormous eyebrows and a car wash….
Grandal to the Brewers.
MadBum next?
At IHOP they’re having a deal on “all you can eat” pancakes. Seriously, how many pancakes can any person eat?
Not sure 🤔 on the pancakes 🥞..
But Chevy Chase set the record on Sheep’s 🐑 testicular balls in one seating at 30 in the movie “Funny Farm”

Guess we’re see a fleet of Oracle racing yachts in McCoveys Cove all summer as part of the sponsorship deal in the naming rights..
Guess we’re see a fleet of Oracle racing yachts in McCoveys Cove all summer as part of the sponsorship deal in the naming rights..
So, Vegas has SF with 73 wins in 2019. I think that’s not far off..
I wish Larry Ellison would buy the Giants, not just name the park…
I was thinking the same thing. Actually, I was thinking that the Flap should start a GoFundMe thing and WE buy the Giants. Can you imagine the fun we’d have with that….
It would be a blast…
Some of Loo’s great trade ideas might actually happen… 🙂
In that article Loo posted, it said the guy ate five and a half pounds of pancakes. Man, that’s as insane as the hotdog guy.
