A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Zaidi Watches Others Work

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 10, 2019

Brian Dozier wasn’t going to change the 2019 fortunes of the Giants but he just went to the Nats for 1 year, 9 million and I’m starting to get pissed off. It’s not cool to just write off entire seasons without even trying and that’s what it looks like SF is going to do. Again, I don’t expect us to be good this year but I would like to see the farm system get replenished and/or I’d like to see some *Muncy-like* pieces added to the current roster. Doing absolutely nothing is not something I can support.

Dozier would have been a nice fit for us. Right handed pop, willing to take a short term contract.
Could probably handle himself in left field when not playing 2B. I hope we at least took a run at him.

well just off yesterday—Brewers sign Grandal for 1 yr $15 mil or so and Dozier (who sucked big time for LA last year) got $9 mil from Nats. Neither of these 2 would be good fits for SF and imo are way overpaid. So it’s better both of these 2 are going somewhere else. Doing nothing better than making a bad and expensive move.
It also means LA is still looking for C in a week market that mostly has been filled by other teams.

Chron reporting (and so did cbs site) the Murray kid is going to try to play pro football. Deciding factor would be timing of NFL combine Feb. 26 vs. Feb 15 when A’s position players report to camp for which he does have an invite.

Talking about FTs yesterday. Seton Hall kid hit 13 of 15 including 2 with couple seconds left and his team up 2 to seal a W. Rest of team went 10-22 including 2 guys combined 2-10.
Stanford last night at home 15-26 vs. AZ 16-18 in a very close game that unfortunately featured 41 fouls called.
Cards best player Okpala 29 points but only 7-12 FT line. Cards almost had them 1 3pt made all game.

Really used to bother me watch HS players at practice casually toss them up and use some weird routine. Focus use your legs rinse repeat. 15 footer no one’s guarding you plenty of time. In a game it’s free money.

Not sure I can find it, but forward Bob Boozer used to stand couple big strides to right of middle to shoot his.

      Wali Jones, too?

Doing nothing is exactly what I think the vast majority of us thought the Giants would do this year…except the Dawg from San….

MLB rumors: Giants make Joe Panik available via trade as second base market heats up

His contract is not of the albatross variety. Not going to get much in return, especially anything that can help immediately. I would trade him for a couple of low A prospects with really high ceiling but risky to get there. They won’t help for 3+ years, but you gotta re-stock this moribund minor league organization…

So Oracle just gave the Giants $350 million smackeroos to change our ballpark’s name to Corporate Sponsorship Park? We should simply turn that money around and give it all to Bryce Harper! Imagine all of the double plays he would ground into here. And, more importantly, imagine how amazing his hair would look with all of the chic salons and mild, humid SF weather!

  7. willedav said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:03 am

Dozier I would guess wants to play every day to build back resume for his next deal. He knew Roberts wouldn’t give him the chance, especially with Seager coming back and LA maybe still in on Machado.
If Giants had traded away Panik I could see it.

There is still over a month til P/C report and OF FAs out there. As couple guys said yesterday .500 team not of question with some upgrades. I don’t have any issue with Giants playing .500 ball which they did for quite a long time last year despite injury problems to SP OF and entire IF. Keep developing pitching which imo still is more important than how many bombs you hit. Exhibit A being Red Sox post season success vs. LA NY HOU.
Giants did well vs. division last year including LA except for Rox. That in itself is recipe for success.

  9. zumiee said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:15 am

The Giants’ brass hasn’t said anything to prepare fans for another bad season. That’s not good. They need to be honest with the fans. Trust the fans.

  10. zumiee said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:19 am

Several years ago, the Warriors’ owner famously took a microphone at center-court and asked the fans to trust the rebuild as boos rained down upon him.

    • zumiee said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:23 am

Baer starts from a position of having lots of goodwill capital already stocked up with the fans.

      • alleykat69 said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:27 am

Baer doesn’t have the backing of Flap Nation diehards ..

  11. willedav said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:46 am

Speaking of bombs Dodgers have now lost 73 of them off last year league leading 235 HR team re: Kemp Puig Grandal and Dozier.
Machado would rep another 13. also have a hard time believing Muncy hits another 35. Hmmnn.

  12. snarkk said, on January 10, 2019 at 10:00 am

The kid from Oklahoma needs to play ball first for the As. Take the 3 years needed to find out if U are MLB material. If yes, U will make a lot of Money. If not, still plenty of years left to get your brain scrambled…

    • Flavor said, on January 10, 2019 at 10:08 am

his first love is football. Try it, get a guaranteed 15 mil or so, if that doesn’t work he can go back to baseball in a couple of years with a bunch of $$$ in the bank. Makes sense to me why he’s doing this.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 10, 2019 at 10:39 am

Bingo. Would you rather toil with Single A Beloit Snappers in Wisconsin, or enter the NFL as a highly touted star?

  13. sandog said, on January 10, 2019 at 10:11 am

I bet Willie’s right—Dozier didn’t want to go somewhere and platoon—which rules us out.

You guys are gonna hate this idea, but I’d give Joey Bats a phone call and bring him to spring training. Dead pull RH bat–perfect for Oracle. I watched him play a fair amount for the Mets last year and he didn’t look bad. Still in good shape and even Keith Hernandez liked his bat speed.

  14. Bozo said, on January 10, 2019 at 10:22 am

I guess Sandog and I are the only ones that think we have a chance this year…

I still say that getting a corner OFer, another starter and a backup for Posey will make us competitive in the West. Actually, fuck competitive, the West can be had. The Rule 5 guys will help push the Vets and give ST a kick in the butt.Yeah, we will also need a healthy year from the long list of last year’s DL guys.

Pitchers and catchers report on 2/13 so I expect to see some moves very soon.

    • sandog said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:04 am

I’m with you Bozo. I think Dirt might be in our camp as well. Get a Rolling Rock or 2 in him and I’m sure he is with us 100%.
I think you and I share some skepticism about the Z Man as well.

      • sandog said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:07 am

Speaking of beer, went out for a burger at little place at the beach last night and got charged $6.50 for a pint of Pacifico. This place is not a dive, but maybe only one rung above dive bar status. That seemed like kind of a rip off to me.

      • Bozo said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:42 am

His first 6 pack of Rolling Rock is on me.

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:49 am

I’m positive going into the season. With all the dinged up and unmovable players we may as well be – nobody rises to low expectations right?

        Shoulda gotten a Tecate, dawg.

      • sandog said, on January 10, 2019 at 12:21 pm

You got that right. I don’t know how it is in other parts of the country, but in this border area, Tecate is dirt cheap and usually Corona/Dos Equis/Pacifico/Modelo are pretty reasonable.

      • djloo27 said, on January 10, 2019 at 4:18 pm

        Tecate is excellent…

    • willedav said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:23 am

Sure very doable imo. Hope they keep Holland too kinda worried/surprised that hasn’t happened yet. I thought he was good fit with younger guys on pithing staff and seemed to do well with C Young first year together.
Really think M Gonzalez is perfect Z type guy fit who can fill in lot of places. With Craw Belt Duggar Panik Giants are still LH heavy without lot of pop coming from those guys.

      • Bozo said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:41 am

I think Marwin Gonzalez would be a good fit, maybe not the masher that most want, but he’d be a Doubles machine at home.

Nice to see the Giants pay tribute to Twin by naming the park after him. At least that was my favorite nickname, that I believe Snarkk gave him.

    • Flavor said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:10 am

Ha, I hadn’t thought about it that way, nice

  16. Flavor said, on January 10, 2019 at 11:09 am

Diggity, I would be open to a Joey Bats spring training invite. WE NEED RIGHT HANDED POP. I don’t understand why so many people don’t understand this. He’s passed his prime obviously but a year of him banging out 25 bombs or so might make the season a little more interesting to follow.

I think Machado will end up with the White Sox so think that means Harper will be a Yankee…

  21. gianthead said, on January 10, 2019 at 3:52 pm

I believe I threw out last year as a prediction that Bautista would end up on the Giants so would not be shocked but why take at bats away from the Big Cheesey Mac and Shaw??? Let’s see if they are major leagues…

No way in my mind do we keep Holland…some one will offer him a 2 year deal and that is one too many for us..

    • sandog said, on January 10, 2019 at 5:00 pm

I think the outfield is going to be platoon city, so I don’t think Bautista would take AB’s from Shaw. And I think there is enough demand for RH pop to keep Mac and JBats busy.

  22. alleykat69 said, on January 10, 2019 at 4:48 pm

Second baseman DJ LeMahieu supposedly is on the Giants radar.Make it so Farhan ,throw a bone 🍖 for the Flap to naw on!
Panik is on the way out it seems in a trade, but probably not a NY team…

  23. snarkk said, on January 10, 2019 at 5:02 pm

Referencing above, yes, I bestowed the moniker Oracle upon Twin. I believe from context he both liked and disliked it; I can’t remember a direct comment on it by him…

    • alleykat69 said, on January 10, 2019 at 5:30 pm

I always got a laugh when you called Twin, Oracle,Snarkk.
Just reminds me of “The Matrix”
The almighty, the profefcy of all wisdom!
Fit Twin to a tee. We were all just his disciples looking up to him until we had a point he could not come up (rarely in his world)and even then he would begrudgely give you credit with a still your a dickwad thrown in lol 😂

    • djloo27 said, on January 10, 2019 at 6:39 pm

      Super nickname…

  24. snarkk said, on January 10, 2019 at 5:11 pm

Like I’ve said before, Giants should draft for / acquire LHed speed and RHed pop, given park dimensions. Acquiring a bunch of LH pop makes no sense unless it is cloned from a guy named Bonds…

SanDawg, Bozo and Dirt, I’m with you in thinking the team will avoid an endless wilderness wander and rather will be competitive starting this year and growing to contention shortly thereafter. But interestingly enough, you say you’re skeptical of Z, and yet IMO, Z is going to be the architect and plan implementer to make it happen. 2 months til Spring Training, no problem. Yeah, impatient for something, but patience must win out.

  26. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on January 10, 2019 at 7:22 pm

I guess what I’m saying is, if there had been a signing here, another signing there, this off-season, it might seem to me to be just another attempt to plug a hole, when hole-plugging isn’t what this team needs. I’m glad they haven’t made a move yet. I think once they’ve figured out what they want to do, then a series of plays will be made and a picture will form on the near future direction of the team. Yes, Loo…. I guess that’s called hope… The other side of it being a dangerous thing is that it’s the greatest thing when *the wilderness* is stretching out in front of us….

We all want the Giants to ultimately get back to the playoffs. It’s just a question of the best way forward. The Mariners have missed the playoffs for 15 straight years. None of us want that.

  28. zumiee said, on January 10, 2019 at 8:06 pm

MLB has an article about “10 teams with unfinished Hot Stove business.” You won’t find the Giants mentioned in that article; you’ll have to wait for the article “One team that hasn’t even started yet….”…

    • alleykat69 said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:18 pm

Yeah I guess you can’t finish what you’ve never started..

  30. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on January 10, 2019 at 8:12 pm

I never even heard of this guy (article says he’s got the fastest fastball on the Giants):
Giants: Melvin Adon, RHP, (Giants No. 19)
The Giants have developed Adon as a starter since signing him out of the Dominican Republic, but he looked better suited for a relief role while dominating out of the bullpen in the Arizona Fall League. He ran his four-seam fastball up to 102 mph and showed encouraging feel for a mid-90s two-seamer.

  31. mrsprtdude said, on January 10, 2019 at 9:36 pm

Hope is a dangerous thing indeed. I won’t say i have none, but not much. I’m glad some of you do:)
