Shoptalk, with Daniel

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 5, 2019

Our good friend Daniel is getting ready for his Playing Pepper series and, as usual, has given me plenty of advance notice on the questions. Here’s a look at them if you want to chime in before I send him my responses:

    The Andreoli era is over.

    • Bozo said, on February 5, 2019 at 12:48 pm

Wow, did the guy even have time to get a hat?

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 12:50 pm

Goddamit watching his at bats was going to be my answer to #6

      • Macdog said, on February 5, 2019 at 1:25 pm

Haha, right, now you’ll have to adjust your answers after this latest transaction.

      • sandog said, on February 5, 2019 at 1:25 pm

Very similar to what I was going to say for #6. Care to hazzard a guess to who I would have gone with instead of Andreotti?

  2. sandog said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:03 pm

This is how I would answer those questions—I’m pretty sure its in lockstep with how most of you would answer them as well:

    1. The off season has been a bit disappointing at this point. The good is that we haven’t traded Belt or Bumgarner and we have made a few low cost pick-ups that seem to be Zaidi’s specialty. The bad is that we haven’t brought in any free agent who can hit–even though it has been a total buyers market and there are all kinds of guys still out there who could help us–Gattis, Jones, Bautista, Harrison, Reynolds, Maybin–just to name a few. The fact that we don’t seem to be players in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes is also a major disappointment.

    2. No, they won’t trade Bum. They should and hopefully will sign him to a long term deal that keeps him in orange and black for the rest of his career. He is a San Francisco Giants legend. In the past, we have always traded our legendary players. I hope we don’t repeat that mistake here. Plus, he knows how to pitch and I think he can still be effective for years to come.

    3. A blip. Buster can still hit and I still think he has some good years in him—especially if that surgery worked.

    4. If we can bring in a few decent bats I am mildly optimistic that this team can be in the hunt for the wild card.

    5. Biggest question is whether or not Zaidi will bring in some free agent talent. I haven’t given up on this. I think it is totally possible he is just biding his time before going after a few bats. And I also choose to believe in the dream that we are still in on Harper.
Biggest in season question is whether our catcher/infield can bounce back and once again be one of the top outfits in the league. I think they can. The contracts are awful and it won’t be pretty a little further down the road, but in the short term, I still really like this group.

    6. Watching Drew Ferguson realize his immense potential.

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:47 pm

Lol this is epic. I disagree with some of it, notably bum/posey answer, but I might still just cut and paste this over to Daniel. He’s gotta be tired of my shtick bnow anyway

      • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:58 pm

You deserve to lighten your workload…

  3. zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:26 pm

    1. I’m fine with the off-season. I would rather see a complete rebuild going on, but Baer probably won’t allow that to happen. So the rebuild is a little more incremental, but is still happening. Most of the rebuild will be with the Giants’ minor league system, moves that aren’t quickly visible to the eye, but make for a longterm overhaul of the organization’s player development system.
    2. There’s a decent chance Bum will traded at the trade deadline, for prospects.
    3. I’m very hopeful for a good rebound from Buster with the surgery. It seems logical that he ends up playing firstbase in the future, with Bart catching, and Belt playing leftfield perhaps, or Belt traded. Maybe that’s more like the year 2020.
    4. I don’t care where they finish in the division this season. It’s not important this season, IMO. If they’re alive for a wild card chase late in the season, that will be fun, and an unexpected bonus to the season. And could keep Bum from getting traded. It’s hard to imagine them being a serious playoff threat this season, though. It’s been tough to get a wild card spot the last couple of seasons.
    5. The biggest question, IMO, is how much change will Baer allow Zaidi to make this season? How unleashed will Zaidi be? The answer I’m sure is “not as much as I’d like.”
    6. I will watch as many Giants games as possible this season, as I always do, and it will bring me joy because baseball does that. But I’m also going to try to get to some San Jose Giants games this season, to see our three brightest prospects: Bart, Ramos, and Anderson. I can see the SJ Giants when they come to visit Stockton or Modesto. This reminds me of the SJ team that had Posey, Crawford, and Culberson. That was a stacked team and fun to watch.

    • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:34 pm

The Giants need to get back to where they have minor league teams that are competing for league championships, instead of having minor league teams that are league doormats.

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 2:48 pm

Good call on the SJ Giants

  4. alleykat69 said, on February 5, 2019 at 3:10 pm

Funny the Giants are turning into the A’s when you needed Velcro on the back of your jersey with the one you bought before they traded that player.
Difference is the Giants are dumping players they just acquired,Anderilo,Gerber who can’t even make to ST for the latest scraps of forgettable players..Atleast you can save money now and cancel your Anderilo,Gerber Jersey…

  5. djloo27 said, on February 5, 2019 at 3:38 pm

I wouldn’t let Belt near LF.
It’s pointless – and an accident waiting to happen…

    • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 4:19 pm

I disagree on that. He has very good instincts on defense, and I think he’d adjust OK out there. Leftfield doesn’t have to be a stellar fielder, as long as he’s hitting well. He could try to be kind of a lesser Bellinger out there. The Dodgers are going to give Bellinger a lot of outfield time this season in order to get Muncy starts at firstbase.

      • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2019 at 5:01 pm

He’s a stellar 1B, Zum – no doubt, but he’s accident prone in general.
Sticking him in the outfield has so little upside, IMO anyway…

  6. Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 5:15 pm

Belt has less of a chance of a ball hitting him in the head if he’s in the OF, so there’s that. More time for him to react.

  7. gianthead said, on February 5, 2019 at 5:31 pm

One thing I would like us to ask Daniel. It does not seem like Card fans think that Ozuna will stay in St. Lou. Why do they think that?

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 5:52 pm

cool. Will forward. And if you guys can think of any other Q’s for him fire away. He loves this shit.

Signing a vet FA outfielder to a short term deal wouldn’t surprise me if more creative stuff can’t be done.
Adam Jones would be a classic Giant move…

      • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 7:16 pm

the thing is, why would Zaidi give a shit if Buster pushed for this? He might consider it I guess. But Jones is not the type of guy Zaidi is interested in. At least, I don’t think he is.

  12. blade3colorado said, on February 5, 2019 at 7:17 pm

Speaking of Buster . . . this is the bat he (supposedly) uses and how it is described:

    “POSEY28 PRO MODEL
This bat is a bona fide bomb dropper. Inspired by Marucci Partner Buster Posey, the POSEY28 Pro Model wood baseball bat features a massive barrel and thin handle, resulting in the end-loaded feel power hitters love and the unmistakable BOOM that goes with it.”

Umm, maybe he should start using it???

Re: Nightengale, it’s not *shameful* that Jones and other FAs “don’t have jobs”. What’s shameful is the kind of money Harper and Machado are looking for. These FAs will get signed at some point. In fact, unless EVERYone gets signed in the next 10 days, this might make spring training more interesting this year, perhaps with some major signings sprinkled throughout the often otherwise boring ST schedule.

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2019 at 7:26 pm

      totally agree. Shameful? Ludicrous.

It’s a nice sunny morning on the central coast of Vietnam: gentle breeze, incoming tide, tropical birds… and first thing this morning, confronted with the image of Loo’s balls mashing in Nancy Pelosi’s face. Might take until at least noon for that image to fade into the sea mist…. 🙂

  16. blade3colorado said, on February 5, 2019 at 7:45 pm

Preface this by saying I find everything about Trump disgusting and still think I’ll wake up one day and this has all been a dream. That being said, he gave a good speech, which was amazingly conciliatory. He even threw a couple of bones (infrastructure and prescription drugs) to the Dems, which might compel them to work with the Republicans in a bi-partisan fashion to get something done this year.

Melania is a hoe in my opinion. She’s done everything for money (e.g., near porn modeling, marrying this moron, and worse, sticking with him).

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 7:50 pm

    • blade3colorado said, on February 5, 2019 at 8:07 pm

Agree John. He really stepped up his game in NY (in less than 125 at bats) and got rewarded for it by the Phillies. Good for him.

  18. willedav said, on February 5, 2019 at 8:37 pm

I read somewhere maybe Heyman suggested this about Machado, but wouldn’t it behoove Harper to sign short term 1- 2 yr deal and then go for big $$$? Say Giants offered him 2yrs $40-45 mil with built in incentives for 30 bombs or x amount of PAs like 600 some. If he rakes and gets the incentives he adds couple more mil and positions himself for big future deal.

  19. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Incentivized contracts, that’s the way to go. Problem is, every team would have to do that for it to work.

  20. willedav said, on February 5, 2019 at 8:42 pm

#6 for me would be next stage development of either/both of D Rod and Moronta. Moronta has Casilla like breaking ball and high 90s heat and I like his no nonsense demeanor out there. DRod again is all business old school type of player, and btw much respect for Bochy. Keeps developing with help of C and pitching coach C Young he’s counter to W Buehler.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 8:46 pm

I gotta tell ya, Willie, you often have a lot of meat in your posts, but your frequent use of initials that I don’t understand make it challenging reading sometimes…. 🙂

      • willedav said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:07 pm

sorry man I’ll try and stop doing that. Curt Young is the Giants pitching coach from last season who used to be with A’s.
walker buehler is Dodgers new kid phenom from last year.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:12 pm

Yeah, I knew who Young was. Actually it’s your basketball posts that go way over my head, but that’s mainly because I don’t follow basketball… 🙂

  22. zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:24 pm

One of the baseball magazines lists the Dodgers farm system as the 5th best in talent right now. The Dodgers have won 6 division titles in a row, and are drafting in a low spot each round, yet still have the #5 farm system. It’s kind of like Zaidi knew what he was doing as GM over there. 🙂

    • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:27 pm

I know he didn’t win a championship over there, and I’m glad of that; but that seems like just a fluke. For some reason Kershaw is uneven in the the playoffs. Hard to figure.

  23. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:37 pm

Something I’m still not clear about: Is Z the Giants GM? I thought his title was higher than that and that he would be hiring a GM. Inquiring minds want to know.

    • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:46 pm

He is President of baseball operations for the Giants and basically the acting GM until he eventually hires a GM.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:49 pm

Thanks for clarifying. Earlier, I found it odd he hadn’t hired a GM to help him tune up the team going into ST. Now I guess he’s going to take a first stab at it himself…. maybe not a bad idea…

      • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:52 pm

Baer is his boss. Baer is franchise president, or something like that. Baer is the liaison between the owners and the baseball front office.

      • zumiee said, on February 5, 2019 at 9:54 pm

I looked it up, Baer’s title is CEO of the Giants.

Goldschmidt going to the Cards could end up being the most significant free agent signing this season.

    • snarkk said, on February 6, 2019 at 12:18 am

The Cards always seem to have at least one new, good farmhand come up and contribute every year. And, they make smart deals like getting guys like Goldy….

      • djloo27 said, on February 6, 2019 at 3:56 am

They not only robbed future MVP Cepeda from us, they later flipped him to the Braves for future MVP Joe Torre…

    • willedav said, on February 6, 2019 at 7:20 am

key would be if they can re sign him beyond this year. I would think he’d do pretty well there and if he does then you are looking at big payday, with Cards or elsewhere.

  26. unca_chuck said, on February 6, 2019 at 4:45 am

Yahoo sports reported tweet from Ian Rappaport on NFL Network that Niners unlikely to allow Raiders to play at Oracle, invoking territorial rights to SF. As one blogger noted in original story in Chron, anyone ask Crawford and Panik what they think?
Remember last season how torn up the OF looked after some event (concert?) there? Maybe Niners will step in here and save Baer from further embarrassment.

  29. gianthead said, on February 6, 2019 at 8:12 am

Not that I wish I’ll on players other than Kershaw and Brady, if this Machado/Harper “collusive conspiracy” (just egging on) goes past the start of spring training, would it not be ironic whomever signs them for lower than the expected dollars the world expected for them (maybe a 2 year deal at $40 mill each with opt-outs after a year) that they can get hurt not getting a full spring training and then missing big chunks of the season…

  30. gianthead said, on February 6, 2019 at 8:15 am

Flav, I have another Daniel question. What value do the Cards fans put on Jose Martinez. Do they think a bullpen arm like Will Smith would be enough to get him and maybe a mid-tier prospect back to the Giants?

  31. Bozo said, on February 6, 2019 at 9:16 am

I wonder what stray Zaidi is playing with today? How about this guy –

    • Flavor said, on February 6, 2019 at 9:20 am

  34. snarkk said, on February 6, 2019 at 9:46 am

Giants can sign Harper. Sign him for one year at $33 million. He can be like a circus attraction to get fans to pay attention. A huge long term deal is nunsense. Even if he were a right handed hitter, it’s nunsense with all the holes in this roster. I think this late in the game interest is another Baer PR stunt…

  35. alleykat69 said, on February 6, 2019 at 10:17 am

We’re always a mystery team when it comes to F/A players and in the end it’s just “Smoke&Mirrors”, no way Harper ends up here,Zman&Baer just trying to boost fans interest going into fanfest S/T..

  36. gianthead said, on February 6, 2019 at 10:39 am

Well I wonder if Boras was at this meeting. They should force at least a second year out of an offer. $35 mill for 2? I would be shocked he take it but we could afford it. We wont do shit this year but adding in Arenado and/or Osuna into the mix for 2020, provided we have a healthy Cueto and another legit arm in the rotation, we could compete in that light for a World Series in 2020, but lot of ifs.

One thing for certain, I am not giving Harper an out after one year…F That.

  37. sandog said, on February 6, 2019 at 10:40 am

    This does make my day!!

Snarkk—I don’t get that logic—“We’ve got too many holes, so don’t sign this guy who fills the fuck out of one of those holes”
I know he won’t solve all of our problems, but he sure as hell is a good start. And he is 26—roughly the same age as Duggar. I’d love to see a 10 year deal.

If Baer had anywhere near the say he used to have, we would have already signed him IMO.

    • snarkk said, on February 6, 2019 at 1:58 pm

Angels signed that 10 year Mega Deal with Pujols years ago haven’t done shit with him. And they’ve even had Trout at least half the time since. Artie Moreno has more money than God, and the Angels still haven’t done shit. Harper would be the Giants Pujols, with Duggar supporting, not Trout. Spend $35 million a year on building a roster and finding somebody half as good as Trout…

      • sandog said, on February 6, 2019 at 2:04 pm

Pujols wasn’t 26 when he signed that deal…..

I don’t want to suck for 5 years waiting for the farm system to get rebuilt from the studs. Gotta smoke em while you got em to give us a chance at competing.
Of course there is risk involved, but that comes with the territory.

      • blade3colorado said, on February 6, 2019 at 2:09 pm

Also, Pujols was already a HOF type player when he signed. I’m definitely not saying they should have signed Pujols. It’s complete insanity to give any player a 10 year contract – too much can go wrong.

Harper? He has been so inconsistent in his career, e.g., see last season where he essentially did jack shit (1.3 WAR). Go back further – 1.5 WAR in 2016 and 1.1 in 2014. Meh. Yeah, go ahead and buy the hype and give him $300 million plus or whatever lunatic number he has in mind. Snarkk named the only player that possibly deserves that type of coin in my opinion . . . Mike Trout.

      • sandog said, on February 6, 2019 at 4:11 pm

I’ll be honest….I don’t know what the fuck WAR is —and I don’t want to know either.
The dude has 3300 career at bats with a .900 OPS. If that isn’t good enough for you, then I wish you the best of luck in finding someone that meets your requirements AND IS AVAILABLE.

    • Irish Kevin said, on February 6, 2019 at 4:18 pm

IMO that is why he has not been signed yet, owners are not going to give him 10 years, they have learned their lessons giving long term contracts to players who will be in their mid 30’s when the contract ends. Sacramento radio station did a list of players who are not even playing anymore who are still on a teams payroll. Bonilla comes to mind.

  38. dirtnrocksnomo said, on February 6, 2019 at 12:28 pm

I’d be down with Harper bringing his act to the bay but 8 years max. How about 8 years @$25M? If 10 years is some sort of make or break requirement then it would have to be a team or mutual option. Maybe give him an opt out in the 5-7 year window to make it more enticing.

  39. Flavor said, on February 6, 2019 at 2:24 pm

I’m not spending more than a second or two wondering about this Harper thing until it happens, but if it did I have decided I would support the signing simply because of his age. Even if we don’t get good till 2021 the dude will only be 28 then. I can dig that.

    • snarkk said, on February 6, 2019 at 7:18 pm

I’ve spent at least 3 seconds on it, and it’s pissing me off.
Even this last second PR move by Baer has me a tad hacked…

  40. djloo27 said, on February 6, 2019 at 3:20 pm

Do we know if the Nats’ deal (10/300) is still on the table?

  41. xoot said, on February 6, 2019 at 3:21 pm

Signing Harper would be a startlingly good move–but I’ll believe it when I see it. Keeping football lines off the OF grass in September is essential unless Zaidi really intends to turn the Giants into the a’s for a while. (Do we truly need an ambidextrous pitcher?)

Trump’s SO the disunion address raised many questions, I suppose, but one that particularly interested me: Where was all that nationalistic bombast and Mussolini-style chin-thrust when he stood cowering, shoulder to shoulder with Putin, last year?

I can’t see how Harper going to the Giants would make any sense to Harper. Or make sense for the Giants, really. I was all in on the Giants going for it last year, and it didn’t work out, and now last year seems like a wasted season that actually messed the Giants up worse because of the Longoria trade. I could see Harper flipping out on all his deep drives that get caught in right-center field.

yes, that’s a huge risk. He doesn’t seem like the most *Let’s go team” guy I’ve ever seen. Often he cares more about his bat flips and hair flips. Still, he does have prodigious power and he’s only 26

Regarding the ballpark, I’ve always felt you have the have the right kind of personalities to deal with the park. Huff and Sandoval were the best at just kind of laughing off the absurdities of 415-foot outs. Crawford and Belt used to deal with it better when the Giants were winning rings, but lately it’s grinding on them.

I propose changing to a 3 ball walk, not 4.
It will force pitchers to throw goddam strikes, no screwing around with waste pitches.
Batters will have more strikes to swing at.
The AB will be decided sooner, one way or another. Time saver, faster game.
Though some more walks will likely ensue, more baserunners = more excitement and chances for baseball plays, not just HRs and strike outs…

        Too radical, Snarkky…

I thought holding up 4 fingers for an auto-walk instead of throwing 4 wide was radical…

I’m with blade on his point above on Trout.
Yes, if the Giants signed him for 10 years at $300MM, now I’d get behind that.
Young, right handed, not a “me” dude, and a defensive stud to patrol the big CF at Oracle/ATT for a decade…

I think Harper is just done with Nats. whatever it is, upper mgmt. or the mgr they brought in last year, or the yard, he just wants out. And having seen Phils a lot for last few years I don’t think he is too keen on them either.

Yeah, that was classic TF. Even his compliments had some sting in them. 🙂

Would chip in for Shoptalk but everyone said everything already. Maybe we get Harper for $250 M for 8 years! I’d take that. A Giant move, if only because they have to be worried about attendance..

I like that one, Sportsdude. He would definitely want an opt out somewhere in there, but I think it’s good for everyone…
