A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 9, 2019

Not only will there be rain today but it sounds like “high winds” too. Man, Baer must be shaking in his boots about this shit show he’s about to host. Who is going to be on the main stage? The Core? Lol. Can’t wait to see what those guys have to say. Maybe he’s setting up a side stage for the *Where are they now?” group. Law and Andreoli could be featured there. Lqtm.

I have kicked around the idea of going just because I am fascinated with Zaidi’s inertia and want to see if my fellow Giants fans are still doing their “happy clam” presentation or if they are waking up and realizing it’s time to revolt. We’ll see, right now I’m leaning towards not going.

Still, a ballpark hot dog sounds pretty good….

Update: We have Flap representation at Fanfest! San Dawg’s son Matty is there. He and his buddies were having a drink at Momo’s, heard it was going on and just wandered over:

Actually I think you should. Sun is out right now. Why not bring the “WE suck” or “We’re old we’re weak we’re slow that is all” take right to those who are responsible for it?

That panhandler out front might be Marvin Bernard, be kind.

If you go your hotdog will probably turn out looking like the one you purchased with SanDog??
Wrinkled up with no inspiring life to it, kind of like the Giants heading into today’s lamefest and ST..

Zum, the Cubs are interesting but they didn’t go complete rebuild to get from winning 73 games 2013 to winning WS 3 years later. Yes, they have fine young team for position players that were results of great drafts.
But they also spent big on FAs. 2016 they got lucky with the one off great year from Dexter Fowler, and also spent big on Ben Zobrist (great move) and Jason Heyward (not so great).

All 5 of SPs 2016 came from outside the organization as FAs or trades–Lester Lackey Arrieta Hendrcks Hammel, plus Aroldis Chapman. Lot of money spent there and they didn’t stop after Maddon burned out Chapman.
Currently all 5 of their SPs are from outside the organization including Quintana and Cole Hammels Tyler Chatwood, not to mention big money spent on Yu Darvish plus the closer Brandon Morrow. This on a team that won 95 games. Clearly they use trades/FAs to fill their needs and aren’t afraid to spend money to do so.

One more interesting stat on Cubs 2018. They were 4th in NL for runs scored yet only 11th in HRs.
League best BA, 2nd OB helped them quite a bit.

Fanfest caters to season ticket holders. They enter early, if they want to (via the entrance by the Marichal statue, I think). No long lines, special treatment, front row seats I suppose. Their conversations today, as they waited for the cattle gate to open, might’ve been interesting to hear.

Zaidi on KNBR just now, I only was able to catch the beginning. What I did not like: He started off saying he’s “still in meet and greet mode”. Uh, fuck that, do something. That was a cop out statement. What I did like: he stressed repeatedly how he’s looking to build a team with players who are flexible to multiple positions—something Sabean and Evans didn’t seem to understand.

I’m not going to make it, the weather sucks and I was thinking about Caltrain but they’re doing some work so that’ll be a pain in the ass, it’s just not worth it.

Before Zaidi was on, Marty Lurie was interviewing some marketing guy from the front office. He was basically begging people to come to fanfest and *go to section 119* where you can partner with other season ticket holders. It’s actually a good idea for people who don’t want to buy entire season packages. It was funny though, when he was selling the perks to being a season ticket holder he said nothing about access to post season tickets, he just kept saying “you get 20% off all food purchases* lol

this is the only shot I’ve seen of the ballpark right now. Seems to be a lot less people but maybe this is just a bad shot

What does that tell us about their hopes for the current bunch on the roster?
Their very own teammates think they suck…

even considering the weather, that is an incredibly tiny crowd for Fanfest this year

These interviews with Fitz and Brooks are really good. Radnich was terrible as expected

The Jim Abbott documentary on the MLB Network is very good. Well worth looking for.

I heard Smarj on KNBR. He said he doesn’t like the trend of starters pitching less innings.
He has a career record of 69-92.

“One consistent theme that has emerged over the past two days: Almost all of the #SFGiants veterans have made a case for the front office to go out and add one or two big pieces.”

Umm, how about all or even some of these “#SFGiants veterans” living up to their contracts? I know . . . what a concept. 🙂

  16. zumiee said, on February 9, 2019 at 5:15 pm

Who says the 2019 Giants aren’t going to be interesting?

    Alex Pavlovic
Bochy said Bumgarner sent him a text after Zaidi said Giants might use openers. “If you use an opener in my game I’m walking right out of the ballpark.”

    • djloo27 said, on February 9, 2019 at 5:17 pm

      Zumiee by a nose!

I’m the one usually getting scooped by everyone else. 🙂

  17. alleykat69 said, on February 9, 2019 at 5:45 pm

Good for Bum, most teams Ace’s would say the same thing about “Openers” save it for 2-5 starters instead!!

  18. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 9, 2019 at 6:42 pm

Not surprised Bum would say that, and good for him. A little surprised reading the comments after that article, in that most comments are critical of Bum’s viewpoint (not a good team player, etc.). I know, they’re just comments, probably mostly by idiots. If this season starts out ugly, we might actually see some exciting little conflicts in the dugout and clubhouse, as in, spreads being overturned… I could go for that, at least there’d be some spark and energy….

There’s another article there on Yahoo Sports written by Mark Townsend about Posey’s tweet about the importance of always being in win-now mode. Townsend says Posey was praising the Giants for in fact always being in win-now mode, but it comes at a time when the team has not really appeared to be in win-now mode. I think the writer completely missed Buster’s point. I don’t think he was praising the G’s for anything, seems more like he was taking a jab at management to not lose sight of winning, now. I’m guessing part of Buster’s viewpoint is that even thinking about trading MadBum is antithesis to winning now…

Ah, maybe I’m just feeling a little feisty this morning, Sunday morning at the end of 2-week holiday and I must go back to work tomorrow, not happily. (I like my job, just don’t like the holiday being over.) I just want to see some life in the team this year after 3 or so years of looking at a decidedly dead-ass team…. That is all.

    • Flavor said, on February 9, 2019 at 7:48 pm

Fitz spent all week on his radio show skewering Zaidi for not doing anything. And then today he had the mic telling everyone at Oracle “hey, don’t write these guys off, the back of their baseball cards say they can do this!” I was like, Dawg you understand people can hear you on your radio show, right?

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:00 pm

1 message for his radio fans, and a different more sanitized rah-rah message at FanFest as directed by the FO?

      • Flavor said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:42 pm

yes. Crap. Don’t fucking sell two different messages to the exact same market.

  21. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Steve made a short but good point about the *veterans* maybe should focus on performing instead of talking about needing help. Yeah, that *core*… which I guess is Buster, Belt, Crawford, Panik… maybe Pablo, dunno… That’s what the team is (yet again) relying on. I don’t really even remember how well this core did last season, but because of that, I’m thinking it was nothing memorable. And they DID get “help” last off-season, right?, with Longo and Cutch coming in. So… core must perform. And the team still needs significant help. Odds of both of those things happening? …….

Zaidi speaking to the Giants veteran players:

  23. zumiee said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:33 pm

On the Wash./Arizona St. broadcast on ESPN, Walton mentioned he played for 6 Hall of Fame coaches. That would be a good trivia question.
Without looking it up, I thought of Wooden, Ramsey, and Jones. The other 3 have me stumped.

    • Flavor said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:41 pm

      obviously Auerbach, right?

      • Flavor said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:45 pm

i looked it up, he only played 2 years for Bos and it was Jones. He played for Wilkins, too

      • zumiee said, on February 9, 2019 at 8:56 pm

I wonder if he was including assistant coaches.

    • djloo27 said, on February 10, 2019 at 3:58 am

      I was gonna guess Heinsohn…
