blogger on MLBTR commenting on Matt Joyce said something like Z is basically stockpiling guys at AAA to fill in should someone get hurt or underperform. Like Snarkk said yesterday, it does appear there could be number of guys shuffling in/out. Surprised Ferguson got whacked, but he had awful spring and there are obviously some players for whom that matters a lot.

Smrdz…I think in his mind he’s back in the ’60s playing the role of Drysdale. Pitch every 5th day, throw hard for as long as you can, and if someone blasts a loud foul off you aim the next pitch at his ribs. He’s always healthy and ready to go 9, until he isn’t. But as with above, Giants have enough depth in rotation he can be shelved when it becomes necessary/whether he likes it or not.

According to AP story, Pence already has 48 ABs in ST, batting .333 3 HRs/7 rbis. Good for him, he’s disappointed how he went out last year and wants to keep playing. But making roster says more about the bottom feeder Rangers than anything else, doesn’t it?

bardball.com just put up my ‘The Oracles of Oracle Park.’

Interesting note on the Rule 5 guys—Joe would have to go back to LA if Giants do not keep him on 25. Ferguson can be kept in Sac if Stros decide they don’t want or need him. If Giants keep Joe and dump Pablo I could dig that.
They need to move on from this guy and fact that Sox are still paying him is irrelevant. Get a younger player and try to improve the roster. Sandoval brings very little as RH hitter and that isn’t likely to change.

    Yeah Willied,
Boch has to get over his lovefest with Panda and move on,He can’t hit Right Handed anymore, yet they still let him try ,which is a waste of AB’s,Zman needs to crack the whip on Boch regarding Panda..

Nicely done on the poem, Pawlie. I haven’t embraced the new name of the ballpark yet, but your poem will help in that regard. 🙂

    Pasted from KNBR’s Facebook page:

Giants spring training is quickly coming to an end, and the final 25-man roster remains a headscratcher. There’s lots of competition all over the diamond for outfield jobs, rotation spots, bullpen jobs, and bench roles. The one area that remains the biggest question mark heading into the season is the over-crowded bullpen.

Marty Lurie joined Gary & Larry Tuesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming roster crunch the team will endure throughout the final week of camp. With an abundance of relievers, including some promising new arms, tough decisions are going to be made, and that could include Mark Melancon.

Throughout his first two seasons with the Giants, Melancon has been far from impressive. Struggling in 2017 and 2018, Melancon has battled multiple injuries as well. Signing a four-year, $62 million contract with the Giants before the 2017 season, Melancon’s contract remains the lone reason to keep him on board, but even that might not be enough.

“Mark Melancon could be cut,” Lurie said. “They sent Ray Black out yesterday, they sent Tyler Beede out yesterday as well. There may not be any compelling reason to give him a spot. I’ll tell you something if you watch him pitch down here, he just doesn’t get anybody out. Everybody, no matter a Double-A player or a major leaguer, they square him up. So my prediction is by the middle of May, if he’s still here, I would be surprised.”

In years past, the Giants front office would likely stick with the players they’ve invested a lot of money in. With Farhan Zaidi taking over, that may change if he believes the roster spot could be used better on someone else.

“I think they’ve turned it over to him (Zaidi), and if he says ‘look, I need this spot. Melancon’s not doing it, let’s get rid of him,’ they’re going to get rid of him.”

Melancon was signed to a large contract to be the teams closer after a disastrous 2016 season closing out games. Going into 2019, the Giants have multiple ninth-inning options they can turn to, and Melancon is not one of them.

“Will Smith is going to close. Moronta is going to get some shots too. There is no set closer on this team, but Moronta has been terrific and he’s just getting better each year. I’d also love to see Trevor Gott on the roster.”

Following Lurie’s sit-down with Gary & Larry on Tuesday, Mike Krukow joined Murph & Mac Wednesday morning to give his thoughts on the remainder of spring training. He doubled-down on the notion that Melancon could be on the outs come Opening Day.

“What do you do with Melancon?” Krukow said. “He hasn’t shown much yet, but what if he has a couple of good outings between now and the end of spring training? Obviously, his contract will give him the benefit of the doubt, but if he doesn’t show anything more than he has, I don’t think they would have a problem dealing him or cutting him a check (releasing him), I don’t know.”

Tough decisions are coming for Zaidi and the Giants, as they work through the obstacle that is assembling a crowded roster.

  9. unca_chuck said, on March 22, 2019 at 1:13 pm

Yeah, this was brought up a week ago by Schulman I think. That Melonhead was “50;50” to make the team.

That being said, I don’t think the ownership group is keen on eating contracts. We still owe him $30 mill.

  10. gianthead said, on March 22, 2019 at 2:03 pm

Hey what is the link to the March madness standings???

    • gianthead said, on March 22, 2019 at 2:10 pm

Never mind…realized I could click on the previous link…went conservative in our game. Add Murray State and UC Irvine in another pool that heavily rewards upsets…

I’m not saying for the season, but for last night, Bagley was the better player than Doncic, in the Kings/Mavs game.
I think both fan-bases are happy with their draft pick. In fact, it’s been pointed out that the top 5 picks in last year’s draft have played well this season. When’s the last time that happened, if ever?

  14. Macdog said, on March 22, 2019 at 4:58 pm

Maybin released, so getting Connor Joe was good for something.

  18. snarkk said, on March 22, 2019 at 6:45 pm

    This Conor Joe dude.
Since he’s rule 5, they have to keep him on the 25 for all year or let him go before the season starts.
Pretty late in the ST season under those conditions just to kick the tires now. But, the Giants OF still sucks.
ZMan knows him, I’d guess this means he’s on the 25 unless he insults Bochy’s wife…

  19. zumiee said, on March 22, 2019 at 6:49 pm

Bum needs to tap out of this one.

  20. zumiee said, on March 22, 2019 at 8:30 pm

    Solarte has grown on me.

  21. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 22, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Immediately upon hearing about the Connor Joe signing, two thoughts were a) he probably instantly joins the lineup because he’s likely better than a good handful of options currently in camp, and eeek! that’s kind of scary, and b) maybe from here on, Z’s pickups will actually improve the team, unlike the earlier pickups like Maybe Not Maybin. Maybe that’s not saying much, but it’s kind of critical to, you know, improve the team…

  22. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 22, 2019 at 8:56 pm

Righty-lefty issues are key and the team seems to struggle with this. Playing at China Basin 81 games a season, you’d better have right-handed power hitters, and you’d better have good righty pitchers to turn the opposing batters around to the left side. Yet here’s the team a week away from the start of the season, still struggling to find righty power bats and also slotting (at least) 3 lefty starting pitchers in the rotation. Doesn’t seem like a winning strategy to me. Fondly remember ’02 with its righty power from Kent, Sanders, Aurelia, Santiago… and 2010 with Buster, Pat the Bat, Uribe, Renteria, of course the nice surprise of Cody Ross… Need more righty dudes, offense and pitching….

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2019 at 9:14 pm

You make good points, but in leiu of that at the moment, they like how Parra, Solarte, and Duggar use the whole field to hit line drives. They’re hoping Williamson turns into something.
Bart may be up before the season is over. For sure at some point next season.

  23. zumiee said, on March 22, 2019 at 9:46 pm

    • willedav said, on March 23, 2019 at 9:11 am

Magic ruined them, what a tool of a GM. Clippers and KIngs and of course Warriors have eclipsed them in their own home state.

  27. willedav said, on March 23, 2019 at 9:08 am

MLBTR says Cards to announce contract extension with Golds. Lot of good things here including at least Giants would only face him few times a year. Also, maybe opens up room for a deal to acquire Jose Martinez or J Gyorko, couple RH with pop that don’t have place to play much on Cards but could help Giants a lot.

  28. pawliekokonuts said, on March 23, 2019 at 10:56 am

Back-up catcher Rivera has been released. Garcia is the back-up. Vogt could be in play eventually.

    • blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2019 at 3:11 pm

This is hilarious . . . I just read this article and Reed is now our top outfielder per Steamer projections. 🙂

  33. unca_chuck said, on March 23, 2019 at 3:40 pm

    MLB Trade Rumors:

“Incredibly, Michael Reed may slot in as the San Francisco’s top projected outfielder for the upcoming season – Steamer, at least, seems to agree. The Giants may not, but the righty-swinging Reed should see plenty of time at each outfield position in ’19, which he may well begin by serving as the weak-side platoon option in center field for lefty Steven Duggar.”

    • djloo27 said, on March 23, 2019 at 3:54 pm

    Okrap DFA’ed off the 40.

  35. unca_chuck said, on March 23, 2019 at 3:55 pm

Fast and furious. Well, slow and tedious? Yazzz

Per team releases, the Orioles and Giants have swung a minor deal, with righty Tyler Herb headed to Baltimore and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski going to San Francisco.

Yastrzemski, 28, is the grandson of Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski. He’s made a six-year lap through the Oriole farm, with early highs eventually offset by upper-minors woes.

    • djloo27 said, on March 23, 2019 at 4:25 pm

    • Macdog said, on March 23, 2019 at 6:02 pm

  38. willedav said, on March 23, 2019 at 4:12 pm

Unc Wiscos the only big Ten team to lose so far in 8 games. They will lose another when Mich St/Minn square off later. UM ahead of Florida right now too. Tough conference.
Bad look other day for Izzo definitely, when your best player has both arms out trying to calm you down in the huddle from going off on a younger player. Then he defended the tirade later even after they won the game. Unnecessary…just admit you lost your head in the moment and it shouldn’t have happened.

    • Flavor said, on March 23, 2019 at 4:27 pm

there was nothing wrong with what Izzo did. He’s coaches with a lot of fire, the kids and their parents know this about him. He didn’t hit him or anything. He yelled at him. I am embarrassed for our future, we have gotten soft and it sucks.

      • willedav said, on March 23, 2019 at 5:07 pm

Nah man. He walked out on the court to chew him out, fine. but then he continued to rant and rave and wouldn’t let it go in the huddle. Excessive and unnecessary. Continuing the tirade in the huddle while Winston is trying to calm him down tells me he could tell Izzo lost control
You tell your players not to let their emotions get best of them and do stupid shit when things go wrong on the court. As a coach it’s your responsibility to hold yourself to higher standard and lead by example.

Kruk on KNBR last week had Rivera all but written onto the LU card 3X a week. He may have even said a few weeks ago he was a “great” catcher or some such nonsense, and the pitchers all loved him. So today, aur revoir Rivera….

    • zumiee said, on March 23, 2019 at 5:44 pm

Zaidi wants versatility from all the bench players, even the back-up catcher. He was impressed enough with Garcia.
Although Zaidi’s looking for Vogt to eventually take it,

  44. blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2019 at 5:43 pm

I’m having a difficult time wrapping my mind around the Oaf making the team. Most ABs of anyone in Spring Training and 2nd most Ks (2 behind Hanson). If you just go by Spring Training, Duggar, Parra, and Gerber (or the versatile Solarte) are your starting outfield. Anyway, I am predicting that if Oaf doesn’t make a quick impact – let’s say by the end of April – he’s gone regardless.

    • zumiee said, on March 23, 2019 at 5:46 pm

I totally agree. I think Zaidi wants to give him one last chance, and if it ain’t happening he’ll be let go or traded for a bag of balls.

      • blade3colorado said, on March 23, 2019 at 5:51 pm

Sandoval isn’t making the team either in my opinion, albeit, he helped his cause today. The bottom line? These pick ups of Joe, and earlier, Joyce, should have both Pablo and Mac worried.

  45. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 23, 2019 at 8:11 pm

As much as I want to see as many new younger players “try out” this season (sort of how this season is feeling, and I’m fine with that as long as it’s entertaining and the team is moving in the right direction), I must confess to wanting Pablo on the team. Sentimentalist, I guess. Hey, if Z likes versatility, Pablo fits the bill in a way. The “personality” of this team is impossible to gauge. Pablo’s outsized personality would not be unwelcome, IMO. But talent-wise relative to other players, yeah, not sure he’s gonna make it.

  46. dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 23, 2019 at 8:30 pm

Pretty sure Joyce was moved to Atl today. Sure it’s possible but hard to see Sandoval not making the club. Dumping Melancon would solve a lot of the club’s roster questions.

  47. djloo27 said, on March 24, 2019 at 4:24 am

From the article on the Giants website, it sounds like most of the off season spending went into the new scoreboard and additional food options at the ballpark. The latter pretty much guarantees a record amount of crowd shots of people stuffing their faces in between looking at their phones. Another reason to go all radio this year…

  48. djloo27 said, on March 24, 2019 at 4:44 am

Probably only MacDog will remember this, but back in the early 80’s, Wayne Gretzky (at the height of his greatness) publicly called the hapless NJ Devils a “Mickey Mouse organization” after an especially brutal beat down. The quote made pretty big news at the time. I think the way they are doing business, our Giants may have officially become an MMO…

    • Macdog said, on March 24, 2019 at 8:23 am

      Loo, yep, absolutely remember that.

    • Macdog said, on March 24, 2019 at 8:37 am

I couldn’t remember what year Gretzky said that, so of course I had to look it up. Interesting, he said it after a 13-4 thrashing early in ’83-84, when the Oilers hadn’t yet won the Cup but would start their dynasty by the end of the season. According to Wiki, Gretzky said that the Devils were “putting a Mickey Mouse operation on the ice.”

A part of me hopes that Zaidi becomes Billy Bean’s character in the Moneyball movie and ruffles Art Howe’s, I mean, Bruce Bochy’s feathers with his day to day involvement. Maybe he trades Carlos Pena, er Brandon Belt, and moves Scott Hatterberg, sorry meant Yangervis Solarte to 1B.

    • willedav said, on March 24, 2019 at 10:00 am

Kinda funny but in Chron analyses of A’s today they mention how much they appreciate defense, especially at corners with Chapman and Olson (who is now hurt and out for maybe couple months). Goes on to talk about how their journeyman pitch to contact SPs like Jackson Fiers yada yada dug having elite defenders behind them last season. Irony of course being Beane’s disdain for it in first place that got Hatteberg and his bat moved there and burden it placed on coach (Washington?) to teach him the position.

Article in the Chron today by Bruce Jenkins, stat in the article shows in 1970 5.32 pitchers used per game has increased to 2018 8.72 pitchers per game. Hmmm…could that be one of the reasons the game is longer. I could not find the article online. 😡😡😡

  54. willedav said, on March 24, 2019 at 11:20 am

anything in chron is available at either sfchronicle or sfgate sites; I read stuff there every day but they’ve changed log in policy so that you have to sign in and create password yada yada. You could make an argument for playing Sando strictly vs. RHP. Last year he hit 8 bombs in 175 ABs and had OPS .816. But where do you play him? And what happens to those numbers if you play him more often?

What a fucking awful loss by UCF, they had Duke beat, from the blown layup that would’ve put them up 6, to the needless foul on Zion that fouled out the big guy, to the failure to box out on the missed free throw.
