It’s definitely raining today but they will get the game in with rain tapering off this afternoon. Of course, the Rays are better than we are. Austin Meadows is a star waiting to happen and I wished all off season for the Giants to trade for Kiermaier. I wonder if we will see old *friend* Christian Arroyo? He doesn’t start and Duffy is hurt again so don’t expect to see much of ex-Giants. Glasnow is a legit SP, he’s no opener or beginner or whatever that shit is called.

Hey, Pillar knows these guys well enough, maybe he can “tell us secrets that he’s learned” and Yoda us to a win today….

Listening to knbr on way to work, sounds like Public House is completely packed at 6:50am. Gotta give out props to Giants fans, they cone strong no matter what time it is.

Fire in our condo complex late last night and I, along with many other units, have water damage due to automatic sprinkler system activating and fire suppression efforts by the fire department. A bit exhausted. So, this was a much appreciated and needed chuckle this morning . . .

    • Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 7:46 am

that sucks. What time? Did it wake you up? Any damage worse than water damage?

  3. willedav said, on April 5, 2019 at 7:37 am

re: Giants pens on the field. Before the rain delayed game vs. A’s, host on KNBR said he thought MLB was gonna mandate those would be disallowed in near future. RCF reconfiguration or would SF ask for grandfather exemption?

    • Bozo said, on April 5, 2019 at 7:56 am

Goodbye kale garden I guess. Maybe they can bring back the bullpen cart.

  4. alleykat69 said, on April 5, 2019 at 7:45 am

Sorry to hear that Blade, glad everyone is safe atleast!Yeah that can make for some anxious & exhausting moments for sure.Guess your gonna need one of those Servpro outfits to come out for the water/smoke damage now..

  5. blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 8:27 am

Thanks guys. This is a “state of the art” complex, with all the security and fire protection bells and whistles. Three high pitched alarms in my unit (master bedroom, 2nd bedroom, and living room). I knew something was up because usually the fire department only sends one rig . . . However, I noticed 3 units arrive and set up around the perimeter of the building, so I got out after I pulled my “quick and dirty” document file (passport, insurance papers, etc.).

Fire occurred at around 10:45 pm on the 5th floor and I didn’t get back to sleep until 2:45 am. Essentially, what happened was that a tenant had a pile of oil/solvent filled rags and spontaneous combustion occurred. Homeowner is away on a trip, so he and/or she has no idea what the damage is. This is a million dollar plus penthouse suite (expensive for this area) and the tenants are going to be shocked. Actual fire damage was nil. Water damage unbelievably bad for his unit and other units below him and to the sides. I am on the 3rd floor and damage occurred from water going down the stairwell, into the common hallway and finding “the path of least resistance” seeping through the walls near the stairwell door, which is opposite my master bedroom walk in closet and a tiny area in the master bedroom. So right now, I have carpeting that will have to be replaced definitely in the closet and possibly in the bedroom, with a possibility of dry wall damage if it “creeps” up from the rug. Right now, I have blowers and a water vac going for mitigation.

I fought fires for a few years, before transferring to fire prevention and then OSH. Tenant was a complete idiot having soaked oily rags in his home. He was obviously unaware of the fire tetrahedron or even, earlier fire triangle theory. Anywho, need to go, as my insurance agent will probably call soon.

    • Macdog said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:33 am

Damn, glad you’re safe, sounds like it could’ve been worse, especially if you had been away on a trip.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:56 am

Thanks Mac. Yeah, I am heading out to Uruguay in about a month. This would have been an even greater disaster if I hadn’t been home. Just got done touring the various units on my floor and the two floors above me that got water damage. I am fortunate in comparison. Very grateful.

Found latest good read by Ken Bruen, one of the great Jack Taylor books. Early convo btw Jack and someone he knows in the Garda:
“Hey I just want to buy you a pint.”
Owen was already at the counter murdering a pint. Seeing me he said to the barman
    “Couple large Jamesons.”
The barman was a nonnational, asked
    “ice?”
    Like, seriously?
Owen gave him the look, said
“Not if you want to go on breathing.”

  7. Macdog said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:05 am

Talk about waiting for the home opener: The Cubs won’t play their first home game until Monday, and the Red Sox — the World Series champs — won’t play their home opener until Tuesday. That’s three road series to start the season for both. The weather sucks this time of year in both cities, but that’s still a rough way to open the season.

  8. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:59 am

Sorry to hear that, Blade. Major pain in the ass. And it sucks that everyone else has to suffer his stupidity. But you are right. How dumb is it to have oily rags in your penthouse apartment?

I’ve always wondered whether going to halon fire suppression for apartment buildings would be less expensive in the long run. I used to work for a company that installed halon systems in data centers and server farms. You’d have to get the people out in a fairly timely manner before firing that off!

    • Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 10:18 am

dumb question, but why do oily rags left around for a long time catch on fire…

    • blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 11:07 am

Good point Chuck. Basically, this is due to the 1989 Montreal Protocol, where they determined that halon depleted the ozone layer, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency subsequently banned its manufacture in 1994. Existing systems are grandfathered in.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 11:36 am

Wow, that tells you how long ago I worked at a fire suppression company!!! Master Protection Enterprises in South City. We had this strange contraption that I would put the handset of the phone into to these rubber cups and call the state regulatory board verify my calculations. It was a dial-up modem! This must have been 1987?

  9. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 10:41 am

The fumes get trapped in the pile as they dry out and heat builds up to the point of combustion.

Lawn clippings stuffed in a garbage can catch fire as well.

    • blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 11:11 am

Yep. You need heat, oxygen, fuel and a chemical chain reaction occurs (fire tetrahedron), which results in fire.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 12:35 pm

Wet lawn clippings I should say.

  10. theroooster said, on April 5, 2019 at 11:13 am

Yeah, spontaneous combustion – chemical reactions.
I remember when the original X-files show came out, I had a roommate who liked the show. One episode was on random people spontaneously combusting. PEOPLE, mind you. That was it for me, never watched it again.

    • snarkk said, on April 5, 2019 at 4:45 pm

Well, then you missed one of the great series of all time…

  11. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 11:37 am

Yup There are numerous cases of spontaneous human combustion.

Kinda like Clayton Kershaw in the playoffs!

A few of the drummers for Spinal Tap went up in flames. One of them left nothing but a stain.

  12. Irish Kevin said, on April 5, 2019 at 12:13 pm

From Kenny Kelly of the McCovey Chronicles
This team isn’t going to score a lot of runs or win even half their games. They will pitch, though. They’ll be like a cover band of the 2009 team, and like a cover band, they won’t be nearly as good. But if you lower your expectations (and add alcohol in responsible quantities) you can still have fun

    Love the last line

  13. Bozo said, on April 5, 2019 at 12:48 pm

I still get jacked up for the home opener. It was always a scheduled vacation day for me when I went every year and even now the day is pretty much centered around it. I have the Sierras iced up and some polish dogs at the ready for the grill. Bring it.

  14. sandog said, on April 5, 2019 at 12:57 pm

Reed cleared waivers and will be playing for the R-Cats.
James and I are greatly pleased by this development!
I guess it will be a good sign when other teams actually start claiming our discards, but we ain’t there yet!

    • unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 1:09 pm

      Mac AND Reed together?

      The AAA crown is ours!!

  15. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 1:05 pm

Sorry to hear about the damage, Blade. So glad you’re OK.

Jack London and his wife lost a new house to oily rags combusting. The newly built Wolf House burned before they could move in. A worker left oily rags in a sealed room in the summer heat. The ruins of the house are Jack London St. Park.
This site shows the architect’s model of the house, and a photo of the ruins. I’ve visited it a few times.

Giants fans really are some of the best in baseball as evidenced by the ovation they gave Bochy. Haven’t been to a Giants home opener since 1997 but will be attending the Astros opener tonight with my 10 year old….I posted on Twitter how unfair it is for Giants fans to no longer get season openers at home. Baer’s Idea made sense when you have a pennant contending team and you want to finish the season at home. That premise makes no sense with this years club and probably the next couple of years.

  21. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 1:59 pm

    Come on, rain!!!

  22. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 2:09 pm

  23. blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 2:14 pm

Waited a week to see what’s what in MLB, so tonight’s slate is my first Draft Kings line up, with a stack of Phillies leading the charge. I also like their pitcher in my #2 slot. A dude named Pivetta is going against the Twins. Going with Bieber in the #1 slot against the hapless Blue Jays. Watching the Giants game and yeah, come on rain.

    • Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:54 pm

yuck, not me, way too much weather in the area for me to play any bats from that game. Good luck tho

  24. Bozo said, on April 5, 2019 at 2:22 pm

I like the 44 behind first base, they should keep that all year.

  25. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 2:53 pm

Yeha they had that on the field at the McCovey memorial.

  26. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:03 pm

Laughily bad umpiring going on today.

  27. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:05 pm

Not pinch-hitting for D-Rod last inning was kind of questionable.

  28. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:11 pm

Esp when he can’t finish the next inning.

  29. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:24 pm

What annoys me is things like guys not tagging on fly balls. Runners on 1st and 2nd and a fly ball hit away from the CFer and the runner goes halfway. It was an obvious catchable ball so why not tag?

    • zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:36 pm

We’re slow, and can’t hit for power. Bad combination.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 3:59 pm

Yeah, but stiii. Fundamentals and all that. The Rays just ad te same situation and te guy tagged.

3 measly hits on a very uninspiring opener for the “Terror of the Bay LU”

  38. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 4:46 pm

The Rays had the right formula today for baseball as it is these days. HRs and power pitching. Their defense was suspect, though.

  40. Bozo said, on April 5, 2019 at 4:59 pm

We’ve only lost one game at home this year, so we’ve got that going for us.

  41. Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:08 pm

Was working through all of this, were the stands filled? I saw a video clip on twitter around 1pm and the bleachers looked empty (I know the game started later)

  42. blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:29 pm

    Hitting rank in parentheses

    AVG: .204 (24)
    Runs: 17 (28)
    Hits: 46 (22)
    Home Runs: 5 (21)
    Stolen Bases: 1 (27)
    OBP: .259 (27)
    SLG: .327 (23)
    Total Bases: 74 (21)

    Pitching rank in parentheses

    Earned Run Average: 2.64 (4)
    Runs Allowed: 24 (13)
    Saves: 2 (17)
    Strikeouts: 54 (19)
    OpBA: .237 (16)
    OBP: .303 (14)
    SLG: .386 (16)
    Run Support: 2.64 (26)

Nice ERA going, but I’m worried about SOs and of course, run support.

    • Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:41 pm

there isn’t much to worry about, we are clearly the worst team in the league. It’s too bad, the pitching isn’t terrible, we could have made a run this year with even half way decent hitting

  43. Macdog said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:33 pm

Nothing like seeing Rays 3B Diaz hit a 2-run bomb in the 1st and go 2 for 4 while their old 3B goes 0 for 5 and looks every bit like the worst contract in baseball.

    • blade3colorado said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:40 pm

Yeah. It’s early, but this seems like a mirror Longo performance thus far from 2018. Of course, you could say that about everyone on this team. I am happy and encouraged about Posey getting off the dime. Both of his hits were shots, insofar as velocity (both at or above 102 I think). Too bad the bat was taken out of his hands by Longo. in the bottom of the 9th.

  44. Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:45 pm

hey there goes another bomb for Adam Jones, that’s #4

    • Bozo said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:59 pm

Kind of makes me think he could have helped the Giants.
So, will we be picking up Altherr when the Phillies get rid of him?

Signing a vet FA outfielder to a short term deal wouldn’t surprise me if more creative stuff can’t be done.
Adam Jones would be a classic Giant move…

  45. Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:55 pm

How many Flappers were at the game today? I know Chuck went. And Ray Dilfy (he used to always be the first to post here every morning back in the early days of the Flap). Anyone else?

  46. snarkk said, on April 5, 2019 at 5:56 pm

Even with solid pitching, no team will be competitive with its scoring hovering around 25th or lower in the MLB team categories…

  47. Flavor said, on April 5, 2019 at 6:46 pm

nice to see the Giants pricing their tickets to the product they’re putting on the field….

  48. willedav said, on April 5, 2019 at 7:30 pm

Altuve yanks one to the wall off A;s pen putting Stros up 3-1 in 7th. Hope wilco and son having good time.
Btw, saw story from nbcsports BA on Bart and Ramos highlights in San Jose opener, clips included. Have to get down there and check them out. could be uh more interesting…

  49. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:29 pm

The ballpark looked pretty full by the middle of the game.

  50. zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:32 pm

So if Adam Jones helps Arizona have a .500 season, how does that really help the D-Backs get closer to winning a championship?

    • Flavor said, on April 6, 2019 at 6:26 am

I think you’re putting too much emphasis on getting a high draft pick. Sure, getting a Buster Posey is great. And Joey Bart might turn out to be just as great. But the damage of multiple years piled on multiple years of nothing but top 3 draft picks is not something I want to go through. How many seasons do we realistically have left? A .500 season is fine. And besides, it’s all the other shit Z has to do to make us competitive again, not just sit on his ass waiting for a high draft pick once a year.
Adam Jones hitting 25-30 home runs? GImmie. All day, gimmie. As Chuck said, “who is he blocking?”

  51. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:39 pm

Who is he holding back by not being there?

  52. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:45 pm

I guess the question is, would you rather have a fairly competitive team, or a doormat? Getting Jones and MG wouldn’t have noticeably changed the overall strategy, but the team would be hitting better I’d think.

My thought on this is it’s a pretty big disservice to Bochy to hand him such a shitty team on his send off.

    • zumiee said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:57 pm

The $6 million will hopefully get him through it OK.

    • Macdog said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:58 pm

  53. unca_chuck said, on April 5, 2019 at 9:47 pm
