A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

FWAR >All Other WAR

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 12, 2019

Pillar niggled his FWAR (Flavor WAR) up to 4.0 last night. Four wins generated by him in 8 games played. That’s a rate everyone here can live with, eh? As a reminder, calculating FWAR is done as follows: Did the player do anything major to contribute to a win or a game the team should have won? If so, that’s one (1.0) in the bank. If not, 0.0. Of course Buster’s FWAR this year sits at an even 0.0. Actually, that should be his new nickname……

Pilly’s OPS is still an underwhelming .623. I hope this puts an end to the misguided take at the blog that you have to have an OPS of .800 to help your team win games.

The rest of the bats continue to smoke the most copious amounts of pole. We’d be in the cellar without Pillar right now, GUARANTEED.

Hoping Zaidi can pull off another magic trick or two, we have a lot of dead, old, over the hill weight still on this team…..

We’re averaging 2.78 runs per game. With any type of offense we might be in first place today…

last night it rained so hard at 2am it felt like it was destroying our metal roof. It felt like we were under nuclear attack.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:59 am

The place we stayed in Jaco, coconuts and tree branches hit the roof all night. It sounded like bombs going off.

  2. Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:36 am

Belt’s only batting .217 but he’s still held his own at the plate this year. He has contributed to the team winning or at least he can’t be blamed as a problem. Panik, Buster, Longo and Crawford have a combined 5 rbi’s this season. They should all be benched or released…….

    • snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:08 am

When I saw Posey in Phoenix, he looked slow, slow and slower. Including his bat speed. All I heard on the radio was that he was looking and feeling good. WTF? They treat the guy like he’s 40 years old. Flemm extolled his defense the other night, OK, he can still throw. Nobody on Giants radio ever focuses on his sorry ass hitting start. It’s like some open secret nobody wants to touch. Maybe that broken ankle in 2011 just messed him up physically for the rest of his career, and its really showing now. He’s heading into his 10th year in MLB, and the guy seems to be imploding at 31. Molina’s stats are down from historical, but still better so far than Buster, and Molina is 36. If Posey is hurt still, let’s hear it. $20+ million a year for a defensive catcher? Anyway, Bart can’t get here fast enough. And, Garcia should be here catching, that cat can hit — now at .550 SLG in Sac. This is mostly a veteran pitching staff, they can pitch to a young catcher…

Didnt the Giants have some trade discussions last year about Domingo Santana??? We probably cheap-assed the offer and he has come out smoking for the Mariners…4 homers and 19 rbis… or if Pillar had been at this pace all season…which is not going to keep happening or Santana may have been smoking on pole as a Giant. But that would have been a creative pickup.

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:06 am

the good news is that we finally have a GM who, at the very least, knows who all the players are. I do not believe the same could have been said about Bobby Evans. Picking up Pillar and Austin would never have been on his radar. So, going forward, I am confident that creative moves will be made by Z….

      • snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:31 am

Agree that ZMan’s trade and moves universe is much bigger than SabEvans’. Seems like their trade partners were what, the Pirates, Texas and one or two others? This guy has been in the FO in both leagues for extended periods. I bet he knows more FO people at deeper familiarity than Sabes and Evans combined. Do I have proof of that ? No. But, just the number of deals he’s made in the past tells me he’s got more phone numbers than they ever did…

  4. snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:14 am

Longoria is still looking like a huge bust, a catastrophic move by SabEvans. Maybe the guy heats up soon, I dunno. He’s had the benefit of the changing leagues excuse, but no more. If he keeps up hitting with a linguini bat, I’d almost rather see Panda play 3rd, and Longo off the bench…

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:23 am

absolutely. But as with Posey and all the other limp bats I’m willing to wait a bit until the weather warms up. Warmer weather really does seem to impact certain baseball players.

      • snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:27 am

Well, he has to play until he doesn’t, with that contract. When the weather heats up elsewhere, it’s cold in SF in the summer. Another season of desultory batting from Longo means they have to get rid of him somehow next offseason. You can’t have linguini at 3rd base for the next half decade and hope to win a division at some point…

      • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:33 am

they should be able to cut bait. They don’t make THAT much money. Shit Chris Davis makes more than both of them. I’m hoping that with the Zaidi regime now in place he will have some freedom that Sabes did not— that is, not having to play a guy just because he’s got a big deal. And again, 15 mil a year (Longo’s salary next year) isn’t THAT big of an anchor.

  5. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:28 am

Apparently the Phillies are doing their ‘due diligence’ on Bummie.

    https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1755876/report-phillies-doing-due-diligence-on-bumgarner

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:33 am

good. Trade him today. His value is only going down from here on out.

    • snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:35 am

Trade him now. Demand their top two outfielder prospects (if they’re any good), and start the back and forth. Or, demand two of their top five prospects whoever they are and whatever they play, and ZMan parlays that with a 3rd and/or 4th team to get OF prospects. Make it happen…

      • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:38 am

Absolutely. And the thing Z has going for him is that most of the ace pitchers, even on bad teams, aren’t available right now. If Z waits until July not only will their be a glut of inventory but the offer will go down because it’s just a 2 month rental.

  6. snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:38 am

Some say Bum won’t generate much trade value back. But, you have to look at WHO the trade partner is. Other teams that need a Bum can friggin hit. They can friggin score runs. They don’t need the Bum of 2012, of game 7 of the WS 2014. They need a Bum that’s pitching like he is now, and that’s better than good enough for them…

  7. Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:39 am

If Z can give up jack shit for Pillar, guys who weren’t even playing at all for us, he should be able to get a nice return on our best trade piece. But it has to happen ASAP

    • snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:57 am

The power surge from Pillar only confirms that for Oracle Park, you’ve got to draft and trade for RHed pop, and LHed speed. A LHed heavy Giants lineup is just dumb…

  8. snarkk said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:43 am

Bum says above all that he wants to win. So, he should be breaking down ZMan’s door to tell him he wants to get traded to a contender…

    Now 1.085 OPS…

    • Bozo said, on April 12, 2019 at 10:11 am

After watching Posey’s decline, I keep thinking the Giants should move Bart to another position now, what do you think?

  11. Bozo said, on April 12, 2019 at 10:14 am

Before any other moves, can we at the very least dump Kratz and bring up Vogt now?

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 10:17 am

      KRATZ!

      • Bozo said, on April 12, 2019 at 12:39 pm

I’ve been slipping that into my barrage of cuss words when I screw something up.

    • Macdog said, on April 12, 2019 at 12:54 pm

Seriously, why is Kratz still on the roster? He should’ve been gone after that spastic route he took to home and then not bothering to slide the other day vs. the Pads.

      • alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2019 at 1:19 pm

The dude is close to 40 Kratz should be collecting his baseball pension not taking up a roster spot!!!

  12. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2019 at 1:32 pm

No shit. that one baffles me as we had Vogt and some other guy for 10 minutes and we settle on him? With Garcia available?

  15. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2019 at 2:28 pm

Walton fired as well. He would be a good fit in Sacto I’d think. Young team and all.

  16. zumiee said, on April 12, 2019 at 3:09 pm

I think Zaidi’s view on Vogt is that he’s still physically rehabbing. Once they feel he’s physically ready, I’m sure he’ll be up and Kratz will be gone.

  17. pawliekokonuts said, on April 12, 2019 at 4:06 pm

None of these comments are cheering me up. Back to the demimonde.

  18. Macdog said, on April 12, 2019 at 4:08 pm

Tiger missed about a 5-6 foot putt that would’ve put him in a tie for 1st with five others. Still has 18th left.

  19. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2019 at 4:57 pm

Agree Zumie on Vogt that he needs a little more time in the squat to physically be ready to go full time.
Just wish the Giants would Just bring up Garcia to get the AB’s instead of Kratz!
Really the Giants should realize Kratz should be on the physically unable to play list even on the everyday roster, shit give Panda 🐼 the backup job for now,if their to stubborn to bring Garcia back up..

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2019 at 5:08 pm

Man, fuck kratz. We got other concerns like Posey, Crawford, long, etc. Kratz has a rad name, he can stay for a bit

    • zumiee said, on April 12, 2019 at 5:17 pm

The Giants want Garcia playing a lot in the minors. He may be trade bait, with Bart on the way.

  20. Bozo said, on April 12, 2019 at 6:09 pm

I mentioned this to Snarkk, but I’m curious what others think as well, should the Giants switch Bart to another position now? After watching Posey’s decline, I’ve been thinking maybe Bart would better serve us at another position. I know a guy can get injured at all positions and having an All Star Catcher is cool, but I gotta think a player’s offensive numbers have the potential to staying productive longer by not catching. What do y’all think?

    • unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2019 at 6:25 pm

Now that catchers are protected more, I don’t see a problem.

  21. willedav said, on April 12, 2019 at 6:13 pm

Smardz certainly deserves an FWAR for shutting out Rox through 7, including 3rd time through the order.

No way your best young hitter Bart, should be C and take all the wear/tear and abuse, from hands knees and concussions. Move him somewhere else so you can keep him LU every day.

  22. willedav said, on April 12, 2019 at 6:28 pm

Rox aren’t hitting either, yet. No one according to box is over .260 that played last night. the Hampson kid who played 2b got 2 hits and raised BA to .152. Meanwhile LeMahieu is hitting .430 for Yanks.

  23. willedav said, on April 12, 2019 at 6:41 pm

Nothing wrong with throwing Belt out in LF either, especially given what SF has gotten from Parra and solarte so far. iirc James posted evidence of how few balls hit to LF would hurt Giants if a Morse were out there and it was only a few over an entire season. They survived Burrell and Ishi just fine and Pillar can cover for them.

  24. djloo27 said, on April 12, 2019 at 7:30 pm

Totally agree with moving Bart. Catchers are just ball blockers and pitch framers…

    • alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2019 at 7:43 pm

Where do you want to move him too Loo, 3rd are LF ?? But 1st Zman needs to bring in 20 more catchers for tryouts..

      • djloo27 said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:08 pm

IDK, Kat. Any fuckin’ where. If you made major leagues you should be able to play almost anywhere without having an anxiety attack…

      • alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:34 pm

How come the Giants never did that with Posey? For a guy that played every position in college, he’s only been a Catcher and 1st basemen, with all the jizz of him playing 3rd base I don’t recall that ever happened..

  25. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2019 at 7:38 pm

Erik Kratz 29th round pick by Toronto in yes 2002!!

But the rad thing is, he has played for a minor league team called “Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs”🐷

  26. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:20 pm

The FO consistently has said (both under Sabes and Z) that a complete tear-down wasn’t going to happen but Z has indeed nodded toward a rebuild that will take a little time while still at least showing some sign of trying to win now. That requires a GM who is constantly paying attention and making moves, something Sabes never seemed to do once the season began (until the deadline, some years). The key to the “winning now” part was everyone’s hopes that *the core* would perform while youth was added. Fact is, the core sucks (Belt the only one showing signs of life). If any of the core is NOT helping with “win now”, and they are NOT going to be part of the team’s future (hello Longo, et al), then at some point this season, it will indeed be “goodbye Longo” et al. Watching who Z brings in is probably the most exciting part of this season for me, but I would be equally excited watching the core shown the door if they continue to suck… as they likely will.

  27. djloo27 said, on April 12, 2019 at 8:39 pm

  29. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 12, 2019 at 9:03 pm

I don’t mind Z bringing in some of these nobodies (like Kratz and Joe) as long as the team doesn’t just stick ’em in there and forget about them. It’s like constant try-outs this season. Cool. Kratz will probably be gone within a week….

Maybe the Giants page could have their own special tracker called Revolving Door: Who’s Next…. Might be kinda fun. Could even establish odds for some friendly betting.
