Rivalry Fueled
Longo with what has to be, sadly, his signature San Francisco moment. Hey, that only took 153 games….
Gotta admit, when I read it, I called bullshit on Zumiee’s post last night:
The Giants usually play the Dodgers competitively. The rivalry brings it out.
With the occasional blowout loss.
I didn’t think they had it in them to play LA competitively last night. Nice call, Zoom.
Of course in my typical fashion I woke up just as Duggar put down the bunt in the bottom of the 7th for the first out (happy game was on MLB channel) and managed to stay awake for the rally and the rest of the game. I was quite surprised to see them in it and actually score runs with 2 outs after Posey’s meager swing on strike 3…
Theme of the weekend was SPs putting them in hole all 3 games and pen sometimes making it worse. Smardz went 5 strong and after Watson meltdown rest of them held LA off. Giants bats still not doing much but 3 runs was enough last night. Nice bounce back from Smith too.
Dat was fun, let’s do it again.
Even last year they played LA tough, only losing season series on the final 3 days. They split first series last year in LA with good pitching and Panik hitting 2 game winning bombs and then another when LA came up here.
Evaluating any mgr of this team doesn’t make much sense if collectively they don’t hit. Giants are worst in league in almost every offensive category and I don’t think that has much to do with Bochy. And it would work the same for Bam Bam or anyone else–pitching is so far very good/offense sucks as we all know. Figuring out whether the guy knows what he is doing strategically during the game and can be motivational to his players goes out the window if they can’t hit or score. Even more so if someone is telling him who to play in first place.
Z can factor in all this during the evaluation. How else can you evaluate BamBam besides just talking to him? Seems to me letting him run the games for a while is something that would yield, at the very least, info greater than what you would get from simply interviewing him.
Still think Bochy doesn’t make it through the entire season. Either through exhaustion, health, or simply him being tired of losing with this sub-par team.
Flav, you are right, there isn’t any way to reasonably evaluate Meulens unless you give him the reins and sit back and watch. Which I doubt ever happens here, period. Z will have different players and mgr./ coaching staff in here next year is my guess. And maybe sooner than that.
So much of today’s game depends little on mgr. themselves, it’s how the teams are hitting. look at Red Sox, who btw have the same record as Giants do despite obviously having way more talent across board.
Did Cora suddenly get stupider in the off season? No. His team led league in most offensive categories last year, runs hit OPS yada yada. Right now they are 11th in league. Run differential last year was plus 200, right now it’s minus 30. And he has 3 SPs Rodriguez Sale and Porcello with ERAs over 6.00 and their pitching is 12th vs. 3rd best last year. It’s not him and imo SF problems aren’t Bochy either.
BamBam may never happen here and I’m fine with that. But letting him give it a go seems like the better route than just watching Bochy do this fake-goodbye tour where nothing happens except he sits on the bench and makes outdated decisions.
Tonight you may see a record number of fouls called in the Warrior game tonight as Scott Foster is working the game. I mean, no one likes him, least of all the Warriors, but Houston has had a running feud with him for years now. As does most of the league. He’s by far always voted the worst ref in the league.
The NBA went so far as to not let Foster work Houston games since the February blow up against the Lakers with Chris Paul and Harden both being ejected.
So much for a fast-moving game.
Why would the NBA ever let him near this game???
Because they want to create excitement and slow the Warriors down. They did this in last year’s finals.
The NBA assigning Foster to this game, after he hasn’t worked a single game since Harden had his cry about him in feb, is one of the most direct “fuck you’s” I’ve seen in a long time…..
Thing is, Both teams (well, the entire league) hates Foster with a passion, and he reffed games last year in the finals to a grinding halt with all the whistles.
Fucking Harden to whine when he routinely kicks his legs out and lands 4′ ahead of his shooting spot to create contact is ridiculous. I’m glad the refs are looking at how he creates contact on his 3s.
I understand they would never “fire” Bochy. It’s gotta come from him.
Tom Goodwin is my preferred successor, but Bam-Bam was a finalist for the Yankee job and is worth a look…
Agree. Giants will never fire him or strong arm him into an advisor role. It would have to come from Bochy and I can’t see him choosing to go out that way.
So he’s gonna go out like this? What possible joy could he get piloting this team into the ground?
He’s not a glamorous guy. He’s a grinder—a guy who takes pride in showing up for work in good times and bad and seeing things through.
these are his guys, some of whom he won WS with. He has military background and they are under his command so he goes out there every day and does his job. He says he still enjoys doing what he’s doing, preparing and leading his team into battle every day. Of course it’s not enjoyable to lose but you soldier on.
And knocking off LA is still quite enjoyable I would guess.
Bochy’s not really a military guy. His father was sergeant, in the army, iirc. But that doesn’t make Bochy one, believe me. (In my experience, officers’ kids are more likely to follow take the armed services route.) I agree though that Bochy’ll see this through, if his health holds. I can’t imagine him abandoning the team just because it’s losing.
I was thinking the same thing about Muellens being a finalist for the Yankee job. Our esteemed colleague djloo has his ear to the ground locally and probably knows best but at the time it seemed like NY was ready to hire and he sort of backed away from the opportunity. Probably because that greasy weasel Baer assured him he’s next in line in SF. If so, that’s too bad for Muellen’s but who knows maybe Zaidi gives him a shot. He led a Netherlands roster with Andrew Jones and a bunch of scrubs to a 4th place WBC finish in ’13 and seems to be well respected around the league, give the guy a look either this season or next. Why not?
Baer is gonna be interesting topic too. He’s supposed to be adamantly opposed to moving fences in. wouldn’t surprise me in least that certain Z roster moves were restricted by Baer as preconditions of him being hired, including Bochy. Just think next year, as Chinese proverb says, the new broom sweeps clean.
Thx to Mac for finding that box score too. Clyde King was same guy that later became longtime Yanks pitching coach, no?
Baer’s primary job after the 92 purchase of the team was getting the new ballpark approved and built. Magowan it turns out wanted triples alley to invoke, nostalgically, the absurd depth of CF at the Polo Grounds (abetted by the long narrow urban plot that park occupied), and magnificent lackey Baer bought in completely. Last year when the bullshit bullpens hit the fans, Baer claimed that he’d been among those who designed the pens to invoke, nostalgically, Candlestick and Wrigley. Now that Wrigley’s modernized, he’s left with what — the E Coli and maybe TB (I can’t remember)? Candlestick’s blown away and since Magowan died the interest in nostalgia has waned; meanwhile, Baer has been declawed. Not this offseason, but the next the pens will move into what we now know as the alley. Gotta be.
I just remember that game so vividly as I was stuck with my mom driving around doing shopping and shit, and I just sat in the car at every stop and ended up listening for about 2.5 hours.
Bochy is going nowhere till he hits 2000 wins. And a monkey managing should produce enough wins to get him to 2000. I think Baer and ownership/mgmt are doing nothing to push out the door and let him leave at the end of season or his own terms…I think Joe Maddon is going to be in the mix for manager….
Management did him NO favors this season. Thus nearly guaranteeing he doesn’t reach 2000.
He would have to go 62-71 from here on out. Not sure if we can do that.
He ain’t gonna get there. And it affects nothing about his hall of fame creds.
Just needs 49 wins…again a monkey could manage 49 wins…
In order not to get to 2000 wins, he would have to go no better than 48-85….I think the Giants are not going to win just 60 games or less this year…
Bochy’s record is 1938-1961 as of today.
He needs 62 wins from NOW to reach 2000.
He needs 49 wins to avoid losing 2000.
Doesn’t add up, Chucky.
How does 95 sound?
I was just looking at the schedule…Warriors dont play game 3 till saturday… bullcrap and then Monday. The series is going to have three days off. Should be playing Friday and Sunday…at least we have Sharks tonight and Thursday…
It’s good for Steph and Klay though.
The NBA crams as many games together as they can during the reg season so they can spread out the fucking playoffs, It is retarded.
Completely retarded
hilarious. Fuck the crybaby Rockets.
This is what Cruz finds ridiculous; not the sociopathic liar treasonous president he enables on a daily basis.
And make it 0-7 for the Rockets after tonight!!!
Who you watching tonight Flav???
Dubs, Giants or Sharks???
Dubs. Giants during commercial breaks of Dubs. And who? Also knee deep right now in the Sat Churchill card.
It’s a classic.
James wife literally has to do this for every Belt at bat. Can you imagine the time and effort this woman puts in to keeping their furniture *clean*?
1.0
Duggar may have Sac-town in his near future.
I predicted that Sunday, but instead, they had to find a pitcher after “Dutch”* was injured, thus Blach got the call.
*I used Dutch because I know you hate that name. lol 🙂
I do. 🙂
You just can’t take that pitch with the pitcher coming up next. That can’t happen.
Duggar, we dig you no more for a while.
Pomeranz is just a journeyman.
Curry back in, sprained finger. Harden out. Poked in the eye.
Big Mac the knife time.
Yes.
Pomegranate is already done?
It was all Bochy could stand.
He might have made better plays in his career, but that’s the best one I have seen Longo make (of those I’ve viewed).
Blahhhhch.
lulz….
Blach shakes off Posey then throws a pitch down the middle to Taylor that gets ripped.
. . . and Blach was doing so well in Sacramento. Pfffttt!
Batting practice pitches.
Sooo, how are the Dubs doiing?
exactly. good ballgame so far GS up 9 at half. Both Curry (finger) and Harden (poked in eye) missed time in first half.
We used to have the famous “conga line” with our World Series era hitters. Now, it can be applied to the Greyhound bus going back and forth from Sacramento and San Francisco.
Fuck sending him back to Sacramento. Just release him.
81 ERA . . . Must be a record. lqtm.
Zumiee called it two nights in a row. Wow!

I had the same thought!
Crawford is almost hitting under .200.
Bochy bats Blach in the 7th.

Fucking Comcast made the Sharks part of the ‘premiere’ sports package. Today.
Cocksuckers.
Sharks game is on NBCSN, is it blacked out for you locally?
They say I need the premiere sports package and I buy all the NFL games.
Fucking bastards. I got the games all year. Till now.
Got to say I really do like the Megadeth iPhone commercial.
Greinke (7.2 IP) and two relievers cooled off the Yanks’ bats.
Jesus. Here come the refs. A slew of stupid calls and mistakes by the Warriors.Double T-s for staring.
Steph gets a foul going after a loose ball. He’s out. KD fouls Harden on a 3 with 1.5 seconds left. Stupid.
Couture with hat trick including last 2 after game was tied. 4-2 Sharks
Klay with the defense. Strange to see the Dubs killing it on the boards. Then again Capela has 5 fouls.
5 on 8 right now.
