Insta Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 15, 2019

I don’t mind going with an opener at all. Make the opposition face 3 different pitchers the first 3 times through the line up–I can dig that. If we had better pitchers this wouldn’t be needed. Which brings me to Beede. Eight walks through his first 6.2 innings ain’t gonna cut it. At this point there is no reason to not keep trotting him out there. Maybe one of his *sunset hearthand* instagram posts will motivate him to shine now and again. Maybe the pitching coach can get through to him, get him to stop mashing the post button on his phone and actually refine his pitching repertoire to something that works at the major league level. Either way, we have nothing to lose. When you are a last place team mid-level talents like Beede get more run.

Dubs game went as expected. Portland’s strength is our strength and it’s not as good. Easy series to handicap.

Not sure Beede can get ML hitters out. Just a brief look last night, 2 outs nobody on and all of a sudden bags are loaded.
What the hell happened to Moronta? Had high hopes for him, now he’s wild and getting raked. Still capable of striking out the side, but too many bad outings like last night that blew game open.

I was following Blazers twitter stuff and after end of 3rd quarter when Hood and Lillard scored to make it 6 point game they were fired up. Stop turning ball over/guard Thompson and Curry we’re in this yada yada. but that was all they had. 4th Q was all GS, lead got back up to 12, game over. Maybe it was energy thing, maybe not.

On a night when Blazers were tough on boards and Harkless lit them up, backcourt duel never materialized. Just don’t see defensive intensity from anyone on Portland that Iguodala and Green bring all game.

    • Flavor said, on May 15, 2019 at 7:40 am

after the D Houston played on Steph last night looked like a pick up game. How can Portland seriously think they compete in this series if they don’t defend the 3 point line?

    • willedav said, on May 15, 2019 at 7:48 am

yes Flav. Iguodala and Thompson made Blazers guards work for what they got. Often Lillard would drive and make a nice pass to someone but rarely got all the way to hoop or wide open looks from outside.

The guy who beat Giants last night, for his first W all year, was traded to Jays by Astros. He’d been at their AAA team for 2 years and best ERA was 4.20-ish. The guy the Stros got? Aledmys Diaz, who had hit 18 bombs for Jays last year and already has 5 this year and an OPS of .815 for Houston. He hits RH and can play most IF spots, and has even started in OF. Better than Solarte?

Stros also signed as FA SP Wade Miley, who won last night and has ERA of 3.51. He didn’t sign until Feb 1 and is only making $4.5 mil on 1 yr deal. Uh, might have helped Giants more than Pomeranz?
Stros of course also signed FA Michael Brantley. He’s currently hitting .335 with an OPS over .900 Not a power hitter and might not hit more bombs than Pillar, but knows how to hit and is productive bat.

So…bottom line Giants have brought in Pillar and like no one of any note, while Luhnow has made 3 brilliant off season moves for players that were readily available for the taking.

    • Flavor said, on May 15, 2019 at 8:07 am

Yes, those were great moves but they were moves a contender makes. Guys like brantley probably weren’t on our radar and who wouldn’t have been very good at Oracle anyway. Z doing a decent job of avoiding left handed hitters right now (minus the dumb Parra move)

      • willedav said, on May 15, 2019 at 8:36 am

well, Miley is likely better than any current SP and would be fine at the O. He wasn’t expensive and was available for a long time. God knows Giants need pitching to hold down other team.
Understand LH bias toward Brantley but he can be conga line hitter in middle of LU. He can get on base and is decent OF. One decent bat obviously would help the LU a lot. That was my beef with Z all along—had the opportunity to add a good hitter and didn’t The chump change guys I can’t stand watching. Zero interest in watching the next Michael Tucker.

It doesn’t have to be this way and it isn’t about the salaries/contracts. Giants have the money to afford to put a better product on the field or they would not have bid for Harper. Z blew it and his dumpster dives haven’t paid off.

      • Flavor said, on May 15, 2019 at 8:44 am

If Miley had the choice, why would he sign with a last place team when he could be on a team that could likely win the WS?

      • gianthead said, on May 15, 2019 at 9:11 am

Miley is the type of guy who we could land and would probably want to pitch in SF if he got a 3 year deal that probably no one else will pay this off-season…and he would pitch well at Oracle..

  3. djloo27 said, on May 15, 2019 at 8:36 am

Doesn’t seem like the Giants are developing anybody for the long term.
Just looking at anyone and waiting for the trade deadline where they’ll hopefully get creative/lucky…

  4. Bozo said, on May 15, 2019 at 9:00 am

I didn’t see the game last night so except the HR was Vincent pitching OK? Beede’s line score doesn’t look too bad, did he just throw a lot of pitches? I still think the best way to use an opener is by going lefty/righty or slop/fastball guys. Switching up the look of the pitchers so you at least make the other Manager tinker with his lineup. Probably why Tampa Bay had success with it last year, Romo throwing floaters and the next guy bringing some heat.

  5. gianthead said, on May 15, 2019 at 9:04 am

I mentioned on Sunday to root for Portland because that would be a much easier matchup without KD. Dubs in 5!!! Sharks in a huge game tonight….they need to use the double opener before bringing Beede into any game!!!

  6. gianthead said, on May 15, 2019 at 9:06 am

And Flav, Vlad Jr. must have heard your slams about the hype and over-reaction:)

  7. snarkk said, on May 15, 2019 at 9:36 am

Stratton, Beede, Bickford. What a Giants high draft trifecta…

    • Bozo said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:16 am

Not saying you’re wrong, but an argument could be made that no team did well in the 1st round of the 2014 draft. I’d have to say, getting Beede at 14 was a better deal than the Astros picking Brady Aiken #1 (he didn’t sign and is now somewhere in the Cleveland org). Bickford was traded for Will Smith and we also got Chris Shaw in that 2015 1st round, so the jury is still out on that one. Stratton gave us around 200 innings of .500 ball not great but we also got Jerez for him, so we’ll see how that turns out.
Again, I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I would have led off with Gary Brown, a full on swing and a miss for a 1st round pick.

      • djloo27 said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:36 am

        Gary Brown’s finest moment:

I guess it’s the old Roger Craig arm-wrecking splitter which is really the old Elroy Face forkball.
Face went 18-1 in relief one year…

      • alleykat69 said, on May 15, 2019 at 10:15 am

        Loo…Nice pull on Elroy Face!!
Recall playing strato- matic with my buddies and seeing Elroy Face’s card, and thought wow this has to be a 1st seeing a reliever’s card with a 18-1 season on it.I thought it was a misprint, but nooo😱you just don’t see a remarkable season like that very often..

I was like, “Rod Carew didn’t do this?”–looked it up, Carew WOULD have won a batting title in 3 different decades, he hit .331 in 1980 but that was the year Brett went crazy and hit .390.

    • Flavor said, on May 15, 2019 at 10:35 am

actually, he wouldn’t have. 3 other dudes hit better than .331 in the AL that year (Cooper, Dilone and Rivers)

    • Macdog said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:09 am

Yeah, Brett was hitting .400 for awhile that season.

      • Flavor said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:34 am

i remember spending that summer in Oregon at my grandparents and my grandpa would drive into town to get a copy of the Oregonian; what Brett was hitting was the first thing we’d check when he got home. And then if it was a west coast game it would often be labeled with the dreaded (N) and no stats as in *night game not completed before we went to print*.

  11. alleykat69 said, on May 15, 2019 at 10:42 am

I like that their starting Garcia at catcher, it should help Shaun Anderson in his 1st start, since he’s caught him at Sac a few times.
This is are new “Thor” if he can pitch anything like the original guy in time, we will have a keeper for sure! So looking forward to this start!
Got him probably by luck(since under Booby/Sabes were basically clueless on deals) for Nunez trade I believe?

  12. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:37 am

Panik (who sucks) still manning the lead-off spot. At least he’s picked it up over the last 2 weeks and is posting a high OBP. Still at the bottom of the league with his 87.5 exit velocity.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 15, 2019 at 11:44 am

That would be great if he was driving to Sacramento.

  28. unca_chuck said, on May 15, 2019 at 1:45 pm

Wow. What a lousy day all around. Anderson will be at 90 by the 4th inning. Weather sucks. Small crowd. Think Boch stretches out Anderson to 110? I doubt it but that may be the only way Shaun has a shot at winning the game.

  37. alleykat69 said, on May 15, 2019 at 2:31 pm

3 errors didn’t help the kid, though he supplied a 2 base one..
You guys noticed Panda stopped running after that wild throw? Guess he was praying the Right fielder with bail him out..

Nice debut by Anderson. The Guerrero Jr gloss sort of reminds me of when Griffey Jr came up except he was tearing up the minors.

You Guys serious about only about 3000 at the game? That means no vendors are making money. No bueno. Vendors may not Re-up for 2020 with traffic way down. Maybe the ownership is starting to pay attention to the baseball product. And not just to real estate development…

    • sandog said, on May 15, 2019 at 4:03 pm

What would you have ownership do that they’re not already doing? They tossed the keys to Zaidi who is doing everything under the sun to shake things up AND we have the 5th highest payroll in MLB, so it’s not like we’re stashing money in real estate deals instead of spending $$$ on the team.

      • snarkk said, on May 15, 2019 at 7:12 pm

I said they’re starting to pay attention. More than alittle late. The last half decade they haven’t, which is why Zaidi was brought in with the house on fire. They’re stuck now with a 3-4 year rebuild. It didn’t have to happen, with all this money they make. Bad front office management of contracts and the minors. Now fans are ripping on the messenger, Zaidi, after only 6 months on the job, which is crazy. I think he’s doing great, making lemonade out of something really sour…

Loo, Orr’s goal, and that photo, were classic. On one of the little streets near the old Boston Garden, Bobby had a bar called 4’s Bar, great pub, tons of pics, and that one was the biggest on the wall. Hell of a hook by the Blues defender after the score to send Orr into the air. Good times. Boston hasn’t won it all too often since then… neither has St Louis, I think…

  53. djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 4:18 am

Paul-Chuck: I find myself sympathizing a little with long suffering fan bases. The Blues have never one it (50+ years). Orr was the best player I ever saw. I watched him and the despicable Bruins skate around MSG with the Cup in ’72. Got in with no ticket and a $5 bribe for the gate man. Easily in my top 3 all time sports heartbreaks.
Bruins went almost 40 years before they would win it again. The Sharks drought is relatively short…

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:32 am

The Sharks existence feels extremely long, if you ask me. Isn’t hockey over yet?
