Giants have another off day for some reason.

Probably just as well.

Dubs have another beatdown scheduled for 6pm. Don’t miss it.

“despicable Bruins”…well said. Much respect for Original Six, but listening to Milbury do commentary was torture. Sharks have also suffered the Pavelski concussion to captain and leader plus a couple different ones (teeth and cojones) to Couture, their best player so far. Thornton won’t last forever either. Would be very cool if they won. Coach seems like stand up guy.

Speaking of funky endings, my former supervisor grew up in Buffalo. Hearing the name Brett Hull set him off pretty good. Bad enough about Bills but Sabres are another long suffering franchise.

the hockey grind through playoffs really is much tougher than any other major sport.

4 rounds of grueling high intensity hockey is the ultimate challenge. And winning the coolest trophy in all of sports imo is well deserving!
Yeah I’ve followed the Sharks since their inception in the league starting at the Cow Palace in 1991, lots of up& downs but almost always make the playoffs, and yes if they can win a Stanley cup, like the Giants years of frustration can finally have closure! 🦈

    • unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:24 am

I had forgotten they played in the Cow Palace. Only hockey game I saw there was the Golden Seals in the early 70s.

      • Stan Shell said, on May 16, 2019 at 11:01 am

Chuck, you mirror my experience. Only hockey game I ever saw in person was at the Cow Palace. Wasn’t the Sharks so it must have been the Seals. Most impressed when after the game a losing player wrapped his stick around a pillar on the way to the locker room.

There are some long suffering fan bases I have no sympathy for either because they won enough or their fans are jerks:

    1) Philadelphia Flyers
    2) Oakland Raiders
    3) NY Islanders
    4) NY Mets

    • Macdog said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:03 am

’83 must’ve been a rough year for you.

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 10:40 am

BTW Mac, I don’t consider Met fans jerks. I just think 1969 & 1986 were so incredible it should last them a lifetime. The newer generation hasn’t suffered enough for me to take pity on them. Raider fans that I know here are totally cool. Islander fans are mostly insufferable…

  4. unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:23 am

The Red Sox don’t make the list? All I hear is the stories about how bad the are, and we were in the city with hundreds of them when Boston came to town around 2008. They were fine if not drunk and obnoxious. Then again, so were we. The only time I was at Fenway, way back in 2002 (?) David Cone was pitching for the Sox vs the Yanks. Kathy and I garnered a lot of puzzled looks sporting Giants gear, but the fans in the RF bleachers were cool. Sox won 3-2.

I think the Raiders fans get some sympathy for having the worst owners a fan base could ask for. Losing their team twice? You have to be a special kind of owner to do shit like that. Re-undead Al continues to fuck with the fans from beyond the veil.

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:43 am

and ruining the Yard with dreaded Mt. Davis. Used to go there to watch AL teams, never thought that much was wrong with Coliseum til then.

  5. Macdog said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:30 am

Bruins are gonna cruise into the Stanley Cup final and will likely be the favorite whether it’s Sharks or Blues. I have no idea if the B’s are that good or if it’s just the result of their road was much smoother after top East teams Lightning and Caps got upset in the first round. I’ll be rooting for either Sharks or Blues because we really don’t need another Boston team win it all.

  6. gianthead said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:31 am

Fortunate win for is Sharks fans…Blues players went ballistic but you got stop whining about calls otherwise you are the Rockets. That could have been a huge choke job for the Sharkems after being up 2 goals and then giving up 4 in one period. I would expect we lose Game 4 and must hold serve on home ice…

  7. birddogpdx said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:36 am

I love the Dubs but they are going to run into the buzzsaw of a fasting Kantor (Stotts will promise to feed him if he defends the 3-pointer), Meyers Leonard knocking Draymond on his ass and Moe Harkless draining 3’s from half-court. Lillard and McCollum may nit even suit up tonight.

I’m calling this series Blazers in 5! Rip City Baby!!!!

    • unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:02 am

Put your money where your mouth is, skippy. Since you are so confident, give me 2:1.

      • alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:15 am

Yeah I’ll take some of that action too!

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:46 am

Not sure Blazers could win 4 games out of 25

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 1:03 pm

Chris what are you doing to the blog, my man.

  8. mrsprtdude said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:13 am

Birddog you think Dubs won’t win another game? Joking right?

  9. unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:24 am

Missing out on Adam Jones is still haunting this team. Our 3-11 start put us in a big hole that they still haven’t climbed out of. I think Jones would have done much better than the two-headed black holes of Joe and Reed.

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:53 am

Jones or any other decent hitting OF. Z got the OK to offer Harper $30 mil + per, then when he declined, they spent only chump change. For half that Giants could have added the 3 guys I mentioned the Astros did in their off season–Brantley Diaz and Miley. A middle order bat OF a backup RH with pop middle IF and decent SP.who threw well in bandbox Milwaukee Imo that turns Giants into .500 team and way more enjoyable to watch than current product. Instead Z folded the tent and went dumpster diving.

  10. alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:49 am

We also have a 2 headed black hole at hitting coaches.Schu&Powell suck!! How do you hire 2 Mendoza line hitting coaches to teach??

  11. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 10:36 am

Posey is due to return and maybe Pomeranz for a start over weekend. when he went on concussion protocol MLBTR had discussion by bloggers about his HOF chances, mixed results. There was a Munson comp too.

Took a look at some numbers btw him and Y Molina, who I’m sure Daniel would feel is sure fire HOF worthy.

    Molina: career BA .282 150 HRs splits .334/.406 for .740 99 OPS+
career WAR 39 in 16 seasons. 3 of those have been .800 OPS, 5 have been under .600
Makes $20 mil this year and next and has made about $135 mil over his long career.

    Posey: career BA .304 135 HRs splits .373/464 for .837 131 OPS + career WAR 41.5 in 10yrs

has made $125 mil in 10 yrs and due $22 this year/couple more. 6 times OPS over .800 plus 1 at .796. Worst season 2018 .741.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 16, 2019 at 11:45 am

Interesting comparison especially with Molina basically seen as a lock. Molina probably gets to 2K locking it up for him. If Posey can get 3-4 more above average years he’s probably in imo.

I was thinking about Sandoval recently. Not as a HOFer but what might have been if he’d been able to avoid injuries and keep himself in shape. He’d probably have been able to get to 2K hits at least.

  12. zumiee said, on May 16, 2019 at 11:49 am

Adam Jones is at a 0.4 WAR so far this season. Almost half a win! That extra half a win would have the Giants breathing down the necks of the Dodgers. 🙂

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 1:01 pm

WAR is dumb. End of comment. You “WARers” can get befuddled by the .5 win, I’ll count the 9 bombs and he would have helped us win at least 2-3 more games. But whatever, not enough to make a difference, I’m not sweating not getting him anymore. Would be nice to have a guy with 9 bombs, tho

    • Bozo said, on May 16, 2019 at 2:13 pm

Pillar’s WAR with SF is 0.3 and I know he’s won some games for us.
      Connor Joe -0.1
      Michael Reed -0.3
      Solarte -0.2
Kratz -0.2 but I know that dude lost us at least 1, maybe even 2 games

  13. zumiee said, on May 16, 2019 at 11:53 am

I tend to believe Zaidi never wanted a gigantic Harper deal. That was surely Baer pushing for that. Then when the deal fell through, Zaidi probably breathed a sigh of relief. And then Baer imploded, but that’s another story.

    • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 3:45 pm

I think the Giants have mastered the art of offering just enough to get turned down…

    • gianthead said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:00 pm

      Think that is exactly right…

  14. Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 1:36 pm

I’m outting birddog right now. He’s a huge Giants, niners and warriors fan who lives in Portland. I’m going to game 3 with him. He’ll be draped in dubs garb

    • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 3:44 pm

      I hear he’s a very good man…

  15. zumiee said, on May 16, 2019 at 2:21 pm

I’m not saying WAR is an exact science, for sure it isn’t. But you can’t just give a player credit for helping to win some games without also giving that same player credit for helping to lose some other games. WAR is trying to measure what difference did the player make in the long run.
Jones has rated as one of the worst defensive outfielders in the majors the last few seasons, for one thing.

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 4:35 pm

defensive WAR rating are unreliable–almost everyone agrees with this. I’m moderately on board with it when it comes to offense but the defensive rating has a LONG way to go, IMO
Would he have hit 9 bombs as a Giant? Probably not but nobody here thought Pillar would have 6 right now. Bottom line is that he has power and we need that.

  16. snarkk said, on May 16, 2019 at 2:37 pm

How about WAR for a manager? Is there such a thing?…

  17. unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2019 at 3:44 pm

Good God, y’all. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Anyway, the point is Jones is doing more than we have gotten from anyone currently in the outfield, ort who we;ve already jettisoned. Comparing him to the league (HUH!) means little when we had Connor Joe from Kokomo and the hologram of a hologram in Michael Reed starting the season and doing nothing.

We went 3-8 to start the year. We are 6 games under .500 now. Even 3 games from Jones and we’d be at .500.

  18. djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:03 pm

One of the many recent failures was not getting in on the Marlins’ latest clearance sale.
That’s how they got Robb Nen when the ’97 champs were disbursed…

    • xoot said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:05 pm

      and Livan, right?

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:14 pm

Had to look it up, Xoot. Here’s the deal (literally):

July 25, 1999: Traded by the Florida Marlins to the San Francisco Giants for Nate Bump and Jason Grilli.

        Fun fact:
Livan wore # 61 in every major league game he appeared in for 9 franchises over 17 seasons (counting Expos & Nats as one)

  19. xoot said, on May 16, 2019 at 5:04 pm

Bill James wrote some very funny stuff about WAR right after the 2017 WS. Judge’s WAR for the season was slightly higher than Altuve’s and James mocked anyone who thought that Altuve had not been more valuable to the champions than Judge had been to the yanks. He also explained the flaws and limitations in most versions of WAR. Nonetheless, he said it’s useful, in its limited way.

  20. djloo27 said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:00 pm

Is it just me, or is this game a little pedestrian so far?
    Crowd seems a little sleepy…

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:21 pm

that’s been a huge problem at Oracle this year. A bunch of millionaires sitting on their hands. I’m expecting the crowd in Portland to be on their feet the entire game, we’ll see

  21. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:41 pm

    3 pt. game

  22. alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:44 pm

You make a run to get back in it and the crowd gets back in it.Tightened up the D make clutch 3’s and the rest will take care of itself..

  23. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:52 pm

    back in front.

  24. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 7:58 pm

Bell, lol. Almost throws the pass into backcourt, blows a layup off stupid shot on 3 on 2 break. Nice board though for putback.
Good to see Thompson and Curry attack the basket. Need to shoot more FTs since they both hit very high pct.
Kerr and Curry have a FT shooting contest at practice, first to 25 wins. Curry’s don’t count unless he swishes them. And Kerr never wins.

  25. snarkk said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:03 pm

Dubs with much better D in Q3. That pushed the run that got em back in the game. Bell is playing a nice game. Dubs picking up the ball and trapping beyond the arc and in front of half court line has BlaZers a bit messed up getting into their offense…

  26. snarkk said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:09 pm

Lillard’s taking jumpers from San Leandro…

  27. zumiee said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:11 pm

“Even 3 games from Jones and we’d be at .500.”
Mike Trout’s WAR so far this season is 2.8.

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:18 pm

Another example of why WAR is dumb

      • willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:21 pm

So tell me what offensive stat do you value the most? You don’t like BA OPS WAR (except your own Fwar),
What is it? wRC or wOBA? what matters beside HRs?

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:19 pm

Zum I hear you but Jones and his 8 bombs compared to the OF stiffs Z brought in—Joe Reed Parra Solarte. Hey he’s not a great player any more, just an improvement over what they had going in.
Giants decided they didn’t want to go the Cutch route but haven’t replaced the OB, 15 bombs and .770 OPS.

  28. snarkk said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:30 pm

This has turned into a really good game. Very cool that brothers Curry are going at each other in this situation…

  29. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:31 pm

tremendous ballgame. Missed first half but second half has been great. Props to Portland they’ve made GS come from behind all night and they are in it til final minute.

  30. alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:35 pm

    WAR
    Warriors Awesome Rejection!’

  31. snarkk said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:36 pm

Iggy with the all ball Strip to seal it. Great game…

  32. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:36 pm

Tough way for them to lose that off the strip. I was worried Dame would shot fake someone into a foul and get 3 FTs to tie. 14-3 run at end. Portland couldn’t get enough stops. Leonard might be a guy who only has so many good minutes in him, kinda surprised to see him in there so much at the end.

  33. alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:36 pm

Lillard schooled by old man Andre in the end..

  34. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Barnett on radio end of first half was lamenting how many points Warriors gave up, 65 right?
    Second half only 46.

  35. willedav said, on May 16, 2019 at 8:45 pm

Did you see that play ESPN just ran? Bell knocks the ball away from Lillard dribbles up left side of floor and I swear he throws the pass into the middle to Livingston, and he is still in backcourt by a step.

  36. Macdog said, on May 16, 2019 at 9:28 pm

    Since no one’s mentioned this . . .

Also, Garcia sent to Sac, Posey expected back tomorrow.

Is cash anything else other than money?…

      • xoot said, on May 16, 2019 at 10:29 pm

It’s a rhetorical trope called pleonasm. Sometimes it works. Cash money. (USA) The most unkindest cut of all. (Shakespeare) Sometimes it’s just there. Tuna fish.
