Champs and Chumps in the Bay
Giants are saying 29,815 attended last night game and that is just lame. When did they stop counting the turnstiles? What is to be gained from releasing obvious inaccurate info like that? 29,815 WERE NOT AT THAT GAME! I doubt the tv viewership was even that high. lqtm.
Suarez proved he wasn’t so awful that he shouldn’t get another start. I’m fine with him pitching, especially considering our options.
So what the fuck are we going to do for nine (9) more days?
The National league stopped counting tickets taken and started counting tickets sold in 1992. The American league was sometime before that. One reason that I read said that counting tickets sold and reporting that, had something to do with revenue sharing.
Most teams do calculate and keep track of their tickets sold but not used and also the comp tickets, so why they can’t just report that calc number to the press, I don’t know.
seems like to me they could report both numbers quite easily
Yeah, If it has to do with revenue sharing you know teams cook the books on that and I guess since it’s possibly a fudged number some newspapers won’t even report it anymore.
The one thing this Dubs run has done: I’m not worrying about how bad the Giants are. I still care i’m just not sweatin’ this stretch of mediocrity (whatever is considered less than that). Another finals run is so great, I’m not worrying about a rebuild
Flav I hear you and it’s tough to watch Giants much when other more interesting sports stuff is on. Pitching though still my main concern. Suarez gave up 2 run bomb that cost him and then Acuna hit another one later.
off Vincent. Let’s see what suarez can do with few more starts, particularly on the road. The drop off from Holland and DRod and continued suckitude of Pomeranz leaves them scrambling for SPs.
I still think giants fans tend to overrate what would come back from dealing off Bum or Smith. Teams today just don’t give up their top prospects. Giants aren’t getting the next Acuna or someone in top 5 of a team’s system, more like 6-10 type who wouldn’t be ML ready for few years. and of course might never be able to hit ML pitching.
I don’t think anyone is under the impression we are going to rake in a boat load of high level prospects if we trade Gott, Dyson, Watson, even Smith and Bummie. We should be able to get mid-level guys.
Thing is though, when we get closer to the deadline, there WILL be teams looking for pen help and willing to overpay. The whole NL Central is a dogfight with only the Reds out of it, and we can make some hay with those guys. The Cubbies and Pittsburgh both have 8 blown saves already so there’s some deals to work there.
Then again, what happens if we are ~ .500 at the break? Do we pull a White Sox, and throw up the flag anyway? We keep teetering on falling off the cliff and staying in the race so there’s no clear choice now . . .
The Warriors started out the series talking about how they’ll be playing a deep bench out of necessity but also because Portland can’t stop them anyway and then swept them for the 2nd time in 3 years. Golden State is in some serious villain territory with Portland fan.
What a 10 year run for bay area sports. Except for the A’s and Raiders, every franchise has appeared in their league championship. If the Sharks could somehow stop being the Braves of the NHL it would be a nice way to close the run.
Flannery was a fucking joke on twitter last night. He wants Zaidi to sit on his hands and watch these losers play out the season. They lost 187 games the last 2 years. I support all the moves Zaidi is making, he’s trying to fix the enormous mess Sabean and Evans created……
Flan is completely behind the old guard. Not surprising at all.
Like I just said though, what if we somehow keep the boat floating by the break and are hovering at .500? Do we throw the white flag anyway? The scenario exists that we be buyers. Shit, Cueto could be back in late August. Make that September push. Hah! We’d have to pass up some teams, but still and all, we aren’t that far out of the WC race as it is
Don’t get me wrong, I like what Farhan is doing, because it is a necessity. I don’t by any means think we should play out the string, but if we somehow are competitive I think we should give it another month. We should know by then.
Flannery should shut up for several reasons. One is he’s wrong. Another it’s a bad look and reflects badly on Bochy. He and Boch were tight, I assume they still are. One could easily assume Flann is being a mouthpiece for things he’s hearing from inside the managers office…
Also, Flan bailed out. Now he wants to sit on the beach and talk shit about a game that’s passed him by? He’s just noise at this point.
Kuiper wasn’t having it on the drive in this morning. He thinks everyone should let Zaidi do the job he was hired to do and that Williamson will succeed “because of the opportunity the Giants give him or fail because of the opportunity they give him”. Solid takes imo. He was also obviously eating something.
Agree 100% with BF and Dirt on the above. Yeah, I heard Kuip, he basically bitch-slapped Flann without naming him. For once, I totally agreed with Kuip on all he said. And, yeah, I thought he was eating through the interview, too. Does he wait to eat only when he’s live on radio?…
Solano sent down. We have 3 bench players tonight.
And 14 pitchers of course. Avelino coming up.
I get what Zaidi is doing and don’t generally don’t have any issue with it but that doesn’t mean he gets a 3 year pass and should be immune from criticism. My issues thus far are
1. Having looked at the acquisition dates of players on the dodgers MLB roster, I’m not convinced that he was instrumental in identifying or acquiring most of them.
2. He strikes me as sort of naive in his dealings with the media. Not Booby level naive but he seemed to have been genuinely surprised about the clubhouse and public blow-back over the roster turnstile. He can grow into the role so this isn’t that big of a deal.
3. Former dodger.
The relative success in offloading contracts and/or acquiring talent will be judged starting this summer. As has been mentioned, it will be interesting to see what happens if the club somehow gets to .500 and is in the WC hunt.
Who is Bum the best fit for?
Have to wait and see who loses a starter in the next month.
The Yanks are losing guys left and right.
think it would have to be NL team so at least he could hit too. wonder if present team playing here right now would be interested? They’ve been talking about trading Teheran forever. Would they be interested in keeping Bum around beyond 2019? They signed Donaldson and re-upped with Markakis too so they aren’t averse to vets on team.
My issue is Z is that while he says he is trying to do what is best for the club every day, with all the moves he has made who has actually done that?
Pillar seems like best move so far but I am very ambivalent this is a guy you keep.
He is hitting .163 vs. LHP so he hasn’t helped as RH in a LH heavy LU. After his great start his May sucks. He’s hitting .200 and has 1 bomb and 4 rbis in his last 60 ABs. The slugging pct is down to about Panik level, not good for corner OF.
Watson seems like most movable guy. any playoff team facing LA would want him to go up against their LH.
Loo asks great ? about Bum, have to think about that one. Wonder if part of the deal to a team he blocked would involve future signing.
Cursory look through MLBTR and F/G, one blogger suggested asking SF about bum and offering up some pitching in exchange. Braves top prospects (and they just called one up, Riley kid for 3b/OF) mostly seem to be pitchers except for #6 rated OF in AA and hitting .300
. Bum would probably be no worse than #3 SP alongside Teheran. He grew up near there and iirc said he gets loose easily in warm weather so ATL probably wouldn’t bother him much.
Their real need seems to be in pen…Bum and Watson, wonder what Braves would give for that, assuming they are in “win now” mode? Not that it matters but I bet fan base would be thrilled.
Hey, we could throw in Posey and $50 million to boot. We get McCann and Riley.
Everyone keeps saying Zaidi is trying to fix what Sabean and Evans left him, but it seems to me that all he’s doing is trying to correct his own moves.
If you want some higher level prospects you trade DRod or even Joey Bart and Bum. If you just want to get rid of salary you package Longo and DRod and/or Smith and Belt. Some sort of combo of those players will get rid of some of the Evans/Sabean guys and in return Zaidi gets his own guys or cash.
Like I said before, I’m not sold on Zaidi until he does something to help us and hurt the Dodgers
get ready for a LOT of this from this fucking guy.
Oh joy. Him and his brother are both injury-prone. If this is yet another bust, Lynch may be a goner after this season.
i was completely off this pick from Day 1.
truth be told, it wasn’t hard to be *off* the pick. Pretty boy silver spoon white boy sitting out his final season nursing a suspect injury to *prepare for the draft*–fucking Trump lover. He’s easy to root against.
Yep, Nine days off with no Dubs !?
Oy, I might actually have to pay attention to the Giants.
Most inane sportstalk subject floating constantly around now — are the Dubs better with or without Durant?
Hmm, let’s see. Were the Giants better with or without Bonds?…
Interesting read at 538 regarding the Giants dynasty.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-strange-dynasty-of-the-san-francisco-giants-is-over-yes-it-was-a-dynasty/?ex_cid=538twitter&fbclid=IwAR08-5ptp3B4F7xa0WIr3POlfqjqHtGVPIleyRZNF5LJ24E7La4dXpYttLU
Tied up. Longo smoked that ball.
this guy is the best
LOL !
Ben Carson. He doesn’t know a short sale from long johns…
oh shoot Belt got robbed by Acuna there.
Sharks gone. like my buddy from Buffalo used to say, ‘they’re like their arena. they tank.”
Vogt is now 0-16 since 3 hit game vs. Reds.
As far as dealing with the Yanks, things have changed in just a few months except for the fact that they are almost always in “win now” mode. Frazier has recovered from his concussions and is probably untouchable, so forget him. 3B Andujar is out for the year with shoulder surgery. Severino’s injured and who knows what he’ll be when he returns. Happ’s been crap. CC is an ancient 5 inning pitcher. They’ve been getting by with Urshela and Voit at the corners. Is that gonna last through the WS? They could use Bum & more.
I’m sure the Yanks would love to unload Stanton. At the trade deadline he will have about $260 million coming – $30 million of which the Marlins will pick up, bringing it down to $230 million. Remember that the Giants were supposedly in on Stanton & Harper at around $300 million. Belt & Longoria will have about $110 million combined left on their deals at the TD.
So…..would you send Bum, Belt and Longo to them for Stanton, Andujar and Byrd contingent on the Yanks picking up at least $50 million of Stanton’s salary? Would $80 million do it?
I know this is all nonsense…
It beats watching the Giants anyway.
You going to any of the NY games, Mac?
I’m not too motivated…
I might go to the Thursday game.
Sure does. POTD right there. Pillar now looking up at Mendoza line after the GIDP.
BTW, SP Domingo German, winningest pitcher in baseball at 9-1 is supposedly subject to an innings limit at some point this season…
zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Interesting things brought up here to think about: does Z change his strategies if the G’s are near .500 around the break and within spitting distance of the WC, or continue along the path and do what the White Sox did all those years ago, trading key players even though they were only about 6 games out. I can’t remember exactly when that was; ’98? Chicago was roundly criticized for that, and it didn’t really pay off for them, as their WS appearance came 7 years later. IMO, “around .500” by the break would be surprising but I guess doable, but I don’t think I’d want Z to change direction; this team is really not built or ready for post-season yet, even if they’re not *out of it*. Wouldn’t want to see Z try to add some old vets at the deadline thinking they’d put the team over the top. Guess we’ll see.
Loo the trade proposal is stroke of pure genius. Question: does Stanton have any no trade provisions built into his contract?
He has a full no trade, but I don’t think he likes it here and it seems to be mutual with most Yankee fans.
On some level it makes sense. Belt would crush it in that park and maybe a return to the AL would suit Longo. Bum brings the obvious. For us, a power righty OF (finally) a possible star young righty 3B and 1B opened up for Posey and Byrd which would also open up catcher for Bart. These things don’t even get discussed in real life – just get dreamt up by bored fans…
yeah it would make too much sense on a lot of levels. And anyway watching Braves last 2 nights it doesn’t seem like pitching is a big need.
3 hours later after it started at Snoracle here’s the only reason to actually sit through it–PH AB by Sando with game on the line.
Pillar making it interesting gotta give him credit for ribbie and SB. Sando gets vs. shift.
the SB is and always will be an effective tool when trying to win a baseball game. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
YEAH!!!
Wow! Every time I want to write this team off, they do something like this!
well maybe they do after all. Panik had hella night too, 2 hits 2 BBs. Only scored once but drove in game winners.
hard to f-ing believe Braves choked that game. Heat’s gonna be on for pen help, big time. If you can’t get out Panik and Crawford, what’s gonna happen when you gotta face Bellinger and co.?
Sick!!! Winner winner!
