Joker Home Runs

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 7, 2019

MLB is in a bad spot. They changed the game forever with their juiced balls and now they seem to have jumped the shark with them. The Frazier bomb yesterday was an absolute joke and this can’t go on. Or can it? How does MLB get out of this? If they went back to normal balls all these launch angle fiends would be sent to the brink of insanity. MLB is already having massive problems with ratings, they know that a 20% increase in fly ball outs will not help with that.

Why can’t the Giants hit one legged off balance half swing bombs? Part of it is their park. Park of is that they have stubborn old vets who shunned the launch angle generation because they had just won 3 in 5 and didn’t see the need to do it—hitting the ball the other way seemed the way to continue to go. Wrong. Finally, their young guys are just awful. Changing their launch angle wouldn’t help. They would need MLB to tighten up that ball even further, or maybe turn it into a golf ball and then probably go to a suped up fungo bat, too….

by the way, some well meaning Flap vets have had some of their comments flagged lately. If you don’t see your comment show up you have probably unknowingly used a banned word. There are only 4 banned words here at the Flap. Several IP addresses, user names and emails have also been banned. All in all, the filter system does a very good job of sending the trolls nonsense into flagged oblivion. But if the problem is just that you’ve used one of the banned 4 words just re-write it without the word, dig?

Banned words? Dang, I must be getting flagged a bunch.

The juiced ball just ruins some pitchers’ careers. Pomeranz probably would have been effective theses days if the ball hadn’t been changed. Pitch-to-contact guys got screwed over.
Pomeranz is starting against the Dodgers tonight. Yikes.

Alonso has 20, on pace to 50+…this is Brady Anderson nonsense Last few years have seen epic increase in bombs and runs scored every season, yet attendance continues to drop. bottom line it ain’t working to draw more folks into the yard. Other factors sure but more HRs isn’t gonna solve it.
Btw, thx Bozo for that link to the online radio station playing Dr. John last night. Caught about an hour of that very cool stuff I’d never heard before.

    • Bozo said, on June 7, 2019 at 9:05 am

Willie, I think OZ will be running more the next couple of days, his catalog was huge, You might want to check out the OZ regular programming as well, pretty much the only station I listen to these days.

  5. Macdog said, on June 7, 2019 at 7:57 am

Frazier being a local star, I’ve followed his career closely. This isn’t the first time he hit an improbable HR, although this one came in Cincy. And I thought for sure he hit a 1-handed one with the Yanks, but I haven’t been able to find it.

    • Flavor said, on June 7, 2019 at 9:28 am

i absolutely remember the 1 armed bomb from Frazier when he was a Yankee, you aren’t imagining that.

story on nbc site re: Z not ruling out trading with LA. Rationale being if you hurt the other team by weakening them in long run trading within division actually helps you. Which provoked lot of “fox is in the henhouse” type of responses. Other than pen guys, don’t see who LA would want but sure would be interesting. And god forbid LA finally wins WS with former Giants.
9 HRs for Belt, 7 of them on road. Giants have played 33 games (15-18) on road so far. At a bomb every 4 games or so anywhere but Snoracle, Belt could wind up with 35. Given his proficiency with glove, present salary wouldn’t be an overpay.

    • snarkk said, on June 7, 2019 at 8:55 am

Lots and lots of changes coming for Giants.
Park has to be reconfigured. The entire minor league system just about has to turn over.
These 3-5 era vets will have to go.
New field manager and coaching team.
The Bart era will need to begin next season.
2024 season– maybe by then this team is back in competition for a playoff spot…

  7. unca_chuck said, on June 7, 2019 at 8:52 am

Jesus. Rosario’s HR in the 1st was worse. He was backing out of the box and wristed it over the wall. Frasier’s was a little better, but criminy, we might as well move the fences in 30′ all around the park to play like New York’s (or Cincy’s, or the Yankees, or Pittsburgh’s . . . ) fricking bandbox.

This is getting stupid. Football is a joke with all the penalties, criminals, and stoppages and now baseball is shooting themselves in the feet by looking at retarded schemes to get people into the park while driving existing fans away. Baseball is becoming beer-league softball. Basketball is fine, but we are about to be priced out of that soon.

    Go Sharks?

  8. unca_chuck said, on June 7, 2019 at 8:54 am

Tonight’s game? The Giants +14. 17-3 Dodgers. The pisser is the only game I’ve attended this year was the 18 run debacle.

  9. snarkk said, on June 7, 2019 at 8:57 am

Nice “state of MLB” by BF.
Plus, there is almost guaranteed IMO that there will be a player strike when the current CBA is over…

The other day I mentioned during the Fresno State/Stanford game that 2B Nolan Dempsey for FSU is the son of a college friend of mine.
The Giants ended up drafting him in the 33rd round, which is pretty cool. He is a bay area kid who went to Serra and the family are big Giants fans, so they are loving it.
His dad played baseball at SDSU when I was there and grandpa, Con Dempsey, pitched in the big leagues and had a nice PCL career.
I met Nolan last year when FSU came to play SDSU and he seems like a great kid.

    • Flavor said, on June 7, 2019 at 10:21 am

i wonder how many 33rd round picks ever make it to the show. At that point is the org just drafting for Class A depth? Serious question, I’m not trying to down on your buddy’s son, just getting drafted is a huge accomplishment.

      • alleykat69 said, on June 7, 2019 at 10:36 am

Well their’s a HOF player drafted in the 62nd rd pick #1,390 by the name of Mike Piazza so anything’s possible..

      • sandog said, on June 7, 2019 at 10:40 am

Yeah, I was kind of wondering the same thing. Its pretty amazing though–when I saw him last year he was playing all over and was kind of a glue guy, laying down some bunts, not a prime producer for them. Then this year he got a regular gig in the infield and made all league. Then the WS run and now drafted.

  11. sandog said, on June 7, 2019 at 9:52 am

Yes, great take BF. The ball is a joke. I guess MLB thinks that is their ticket to becoming more relevant.
    Bad move.

I shudder to think how many HR’s we’d have without the juiced ball!

  12. alleykat69 said, on June 7, 2019 at 10:44 am

Yeah the juiced ball should be in full force tonight with Drew Pomegranate starting(why it’s beyond me?)as he sports the 5th highest ERA 8.08 among all starters with atleast 5 starts!
    ⚾️🚀⚾️🚀⚾️🚀⚾️🚀⚾️🚀⚾️🚀balls a flying out tonight!!

  13. Flavor said, on June 7, 2019 at 11:42 am

I think Pom is going to pitch ok tonight. LA not good against lefties and they also have the worst VMI number for hitters in MLB today. Plus theoretically he’s pitching in a pitchers park. If he’s going to save his career it needs to start tonight or this may be his last start…..

  14. Flavor said, on June 7, 2019 at 11:46 am

I highly doubt Pom has a long leash tonight even if he’s pitching well. I’ll say 5 innings, 1 earned run. That would actually be incredible, right?
Let’s do the Amazon card contest. I’ll say Pillar and 18 (hits/k total for Pom and Kershaw)

  15. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 7, 2019 at 11:50 am

I’m headed to the yard on Sunday. Kind of bummer that it will most likely be the last time I see Bumgarner in orange and black. No chance he signs back with the Giants as a free agent imo. Does that ever happen?

    • Flavor said, on June 7, 2019 at 11:55 am

i think Chapman did that after he was traded to the Cubs, right?

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 7, 2019 at 11:59 am

If I remember correctly the Red Sox seemed to think Lester would come back after trading him to the A’s but he signed with Chicago.

  19. gianthead said, on June 7, 2019 at 1:39 pm

Chuck makes a good point about beer leaguers now being mlb claiber…look at Voit (who of course the Giants could gave easily had made a deal with the Cards with better relievers) and Gallo and this kid Vaughn from Cal…he looks like a leg destined for DHing…

If the Giants solution to to the juiced ball era is to bring fences in Oracle by 30 feet and turning games into 12-10 slugfests, (they will probably shove the DH down our throats) I’m probably done with baseball. Baseball to me is a game of strategy and how to use your pitchers when they hit, pitching around other guys to get to the other team’s pitcher, bunting, moving the runner over, manufacturing runs, that is frickin baseball!!!

I’ll turn to golf 24-7 during the summer months when the NBA ends..

    • gianthead said, on June 7, 2019 at 1:40 pm

Good question about traded players coming back to the “home team” as free agent. Without looking it up, I seem to remember Ricky Henderson and Yanks/A’s/Toronto? doing it once, maybe. Maybe Jack Morris once too, traded as a rental but then returned (Twins/Tigers/Toronto, I don’t know)… Or maybe it was just discussed that it was a possibility but then never happened.

    • zumiee said, on June 7, 2019 at 6:04 pm

That show ruled when I was a kid.
That was nice wisdom of Bruce Wayne about music being a hope for peace in the world.
The opening narration was cool, too. Very literate. And it was very lenient of the warden to allow the Joker to wear his make-up.

  31. willedav said, on June 7, 2019 at 6:59 pm

Lowry doing his Elvis Patterson imitation.
Still Raps front court is tough love the way they attack offensive boards.
Guards shooting though is “regressing closer to the mean.”

  32. willedav said, on June 7, 2019 at 7:12 pm
