“Done to the Nines”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 21, 2019

One of my favorite British sayings. Well, that went pretty much as we expected it to go. Looking back it’s amazing we won a game. I missed the comeback last night, I guess there’s something to be said for not getting “9’d* to death every game. “Death by Nine-ing” lqtm. They made it interesting at least.

I wonder what number Arizona will relentless pummel us with? 9 seems so dated and played out. And AZ is a more friendly hitters park. Maybe they reign 12’s down on us?

The sadder theme playing out is the dwindling worth of Bumgarner. Nobody pays up for what a legend used to do. Ghosts are worth nothing…..

Newest contest…how many runs does our starter give up or do we go total runs???
    I’ll go 5 and 7…

    • Flavor said, on June 21, 2019 at 6:58 am

Contests only work when there’s a prize my man. I shipped off this year’s prize already to the great Mac Dog. If I come upon another one I’ll definitely 🔥 it up again

      Rhetorical contest….

That same Lillard/baggs rap-fight is pretty epic. Lillard crushed him.

  3. djloo27 said, on June 21, 2019 at 7:46 am

I gotta plow through some stuff. I might have some decent prizes to throw out there.
Gotta clean the bathroom first. I’ve been using the one in my corner gas station.

Timing is everything, and last night unfortunate after he’d pitched well against them before. MLBTR story had lines about how Bum’s peripherals weren’t far off career numbers, velo was OK yada yada. But with scouts in hand, a clunker vs. hated rivals and bombs from likes of Austin Barnes and the rookie kid Garlick isn’t good.

I said before they should have done this in off season. IF he is in decline (don’t necessarily agree) longer you wait/worse he gets it’s gonna affect what comes back. Maybe Z was under orders–you can’t walk into the job and trade Bum right away and blow up the fan base.

Didn’t watch game, caught the NBA draft. Good to see they made comeback score some runs off Dodger pitching. Good for Yaz too, doing some good things.

  5. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 8:54 am

9-peat? Jesus. Missed the comeback as well. This team is playing 1 step forward 3 steps back. Every time they look like they are kinda decent, they get their dicks knocked in the dirt.

Back to reality. Back to the team that threw a double-9 on us. What a game that was. I sure picked the wrong game to go to. Pomeranian in AZ? We’ll probably get a 3 TD spread.

    • snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:24 am

A handful more forest fire starts and Pom will be the new Wellemeyer or whatever his name was. That guy was flat awful, Pom has a ways to go yet for that level of disaster. But, he’s making an effort…

    • unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:40 am

That would be a Brad Penny year.

  6. snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 8:58 am

I said last winter they should trade him then, mainly because I didn’t want injury risk. Teams know what he is. He threw a gem against LA up in SF. Last night not so good. Inconsistent. They still have to trade him. His value to the team is to be traded, not pitch for a loser in meaningless games in a lost season…

  7. snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:34 am

Apparently, last night post-game possibly before his wine, Boch got a little miffed at the out call at third on Vogt. Wondered about how the umps in NY are accountable. They’re not…

    • unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:47 am

The umps are getting worse and worse. The Machado deal the other day was ludicrous, but the ump;s union taking to twitter to single out Machado’s rant is right out of the Trump playbook of idiocy.

If a player did that, he would be fined and suspended. Umps instigate shit all the time (see Joe West), make shitty call after shitty call (see Angel Hernandez) and get away with shoving players (see Ron Kulpa) with no repercussions.

Granted this isn’t much, but the ump clearly escalates this situation all game. It gets weirder when the ump yells at Hinch “I can do anything I want!” Kulpa is watching the dugout rather than watch the actual pitches during the game.

  8. snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:50 am

It’s probably not even hard to fix this replay system with tech. Every player has a chip in the palm of the glove, and the bases have pressure chips, or some such. A bang bang play registers on a computer application, and its easy to immediately document exactly whether the ball touched the meat of the glove first, or the runner’s foot on the base. This has probably been already figured out by multiple people, maybe even tested. No need for the visual fuzziness, and lack of enough cameras. You could make rules and tech protections to prevent cheating with the chips. But, this would go a long way to eliminating umps altogether, so no bueno…

  9. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 9:56 am

Didn’t realize how long ago that shit happened.

  10. alleykat69 said, on June 21, 2019 at 11:55 am

When it’s 1:30 in NewYork is their anyone even manning the review room? These guys are closing down their local bar,I bet they the ump puts on the headsets waits a few minutes listening to elevator music 🎶 then takes the sets off and does his stupid out fist 👊 in the air sign just to move the game along,Vogt clearly beat the throw, but your never gonna get the call on the road in LA,And especially in a empty room from NY..

  11. zumiee said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:30 pm

If the ump had called Vogt safe, the call would have stood. It’s the same ump the night before who blew the called strike 3 call on Bellinger, and then Bellinger hit an HR on the next pitch.

  12. zumiee said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:33 pm

The umps suck, and electronics need to replace them as much as possible. We expect umps to visualize an imaginary strike zone in the air to call strikes. It’s a pretty ridiculous situation that the technology could help a lot with.

  13. snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:41 pm

Umps jobs could totally be replaced by tech. Right now. They are an anachronism from old times. A vestigial organ. But, their error prone humanity offers some drama in a game becoming increasingly boring and hard to watch…

    • snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:44 pm

It is ridiculous that old farts and egomaniacs like Joe West and incompetents like Angel Hernandez have key roles in deciding game action…

  14. snarkk said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:50 pm

My quick fixes for the game:
    Deaden the ball
Shifts ok but must have 2 infielders on each side of second, mic pitcher and catcher
Infielders cannot have any foot on outfield grass before pitch thrown…

  15. zumiee said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:56 pm

Sports in general are becoming harder to watch. I think some of that has to do with everyone’s shrinking attention span for 3 hour sporting events, mine included. We live in a faster-paced society with a gazillion entertainment options. Sports has its challenge really cut out for it. Spectator sports would be in a lot more trouble if some fans hadn’t invented fantasy sports to liven up their interest.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:03 pm

The problem with baseball isn’t the time it takes. It is the pandering to what they consider their demographic needs to be. Pandering to younger people (18-35) only alienates the fans they HAVE. T-shirt cannons and dot racing. the slide, etc. are all fine for the youngsters, but the incessant noise and distractions foisted upon the crowds is off-putting. And this is supposed to bring 20 year olds to games?

  16. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 1:57 pm

    I like the first one.

Regulating where players can or cannot stand I think is ridiculous. Is 5 infielders legal? Teams do it a lot late in games. Playing up to bunt? Is that now off the table? It’s on the players to adjust. Teams were doing this to Willie McCovey back in the day. I didn’t hear too much complaining then.

Zman picks up another scrub outfielder for AAA.
Joey Rikard from the Orioles hitting .203 for his career .245 about the same numbers as are idiot 2 headed hitting coaches put up for their irrelevant careers..

    • Flavor said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:12 pm

i’m cool with most of his moves but this one is just dumb. Unless it’s strictly for AAA depth

  18. zumiee said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:03 pm

Wrigley Field is putting in some new seating section signs, and fans can bid on the old ones. Fans can literally pay for junk.
“Hey, look at my Section 402 sign, and it only cost me $1,000!”

    • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:35 pm

I think they all do it, Zum.
I know Shea and Yankee stadiums were sold off in pieces.
Candlestick – the seats for sure. Can you sell wind?

  19. zumiee said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:33 pm

I’m softening on the shift rule ideas. I would say have rules only for the first 6 or 7 innings, though. Allow teams to do shifts late in the game.
The analytic nerds have cracked the code on locating the fielders. The rules need to adjust. The NBA and NFL have made rule changes over the years to balance offense and defense. Baseball needs to do it, too.

    • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2019 at 2:40 pm

      Dumb question:
Are fielders permitted to be in motion at all times – or is there some rule in place to protect hitters from being distracted by 8 guys scrambling around?

    • unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 3:21 pm

Not to that level though, Zoom. It would be like telling the strong safety he HAS to play within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Or that WRs MUST be lined up within 10 yards of the sideline.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 3:22 pm

      The players need to adjust.

    • djloo27 said, on June 21, 2019 at 4:07 pm

I think the NBA oughtta widen the court so the corner 3 is a little deeper.
Years ago there was talk of raising the rim…

  20. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 3:19 pm

A’s pitcher Frankie Montas was just suspended 80 games for PEDs.

  21. djloo27 said, on June 21, 2019 at 4:28 pm

I bet less than half of your NFL fans would go 3 for 3 on this quiz:

    1) What yard line do teams kick off from?
    2) What yard line do you start from on a touchback?
    3) What yard line is the ball placed on for the extra point?

    • alleykat69 said, on June 21, 2019 at 4:44 pm

      Kat’s analysts..1)35 yard line kickoffs
      2) 25 yard line touchbacks
      3)25 yard line extra point

“Dressed to the nines” took on new meaning the past 3 games. Maybe the guys misheard it and thought it was dressed for the nines. Wonder how often a team has given up exactly 9 runs in 3 consecutive games…

SF picked, in 2015 Round 1, Phil Bickford 6 slots ahead of Buehler …
    Sweet pick, Giants !…

  49. unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2019 at 11:47 pm
