Pop Flies And Pom Poms

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 24, 2019

Did you guys see that Will Smith game winner? He just kind of fisted an opposite field fly ball that just kept going and going and going. It didn’t have the look or the sound or anything. And it was gone, just like that.

Pom Pom tonight. Yikes. Our grip on 14th place in the National League is still safe for another couple of games but after that…..

Dodger PBP guy, Steiner called it a pop up off the bat…
    The game is broken…

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:26 am

i heard that call about an hour ago. This isn’t baseball anymore

  2. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:08 am

Charlie Steiner still works for the Dogs? He was on ESPN a million years ago wasn’t he?

Fuck. Saw the HR. Fucking Posey barrels one and he doesn’t reach the track. Belt hits one well on the barrel opposite field and he barely reaches the track. This guy gets jammed on his hands and it goes over the wall?

Are some teams getting different balls than others? It’s like LA is getting those old hard-soft rubber baseballs we used as kids when we played on cement. Those bastards flew a mile if you hit ’em right. and the spin generated was wicked.

The next thing I want to see the a check-swing home run. Or a goddamn bunt that goes over the wall.

    • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:16 am

Back here, the wicked spinners were called “egg balls” cause of the optical illusion they made…

  3. willedav said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:11 am

Anderson pitched pretty well, only 5 hits 1 BB. Surprised too they gave Escobar a hit on the ball into shallow center that Crawford dropped. Fortunately Moronta pitched out of it with Vogt retrieving the wild pitch and tagging out Escobar. Meanwhile Nunez, who went to Boston in that deal, is hitting .234.

Rox had swept the DBax 3 in a row before Giants got there, then lost 3 in a row in LA all to rookies hitting walk off bombs. Giants (last) and Rox (2nd) are 6 and a half games apart. Rox 13 back of LA..

Ostler’s headline front page of Chron sports: “Worst line up in SF history?”

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:22 am

It was supposed to be so different. Posey, Belt, Crawford, Panik, and Longoria were supposed to still be in their prime at this point. It all went wrong, starting a few years ago.

      • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:29 am

i don’t understand how Posey, et al have gotten so bad. Theoretically, while they shouldn’t have the power of most of the men playing the game today they should at least have some. How can they have nearly none? They’re hitting the same damn juiced ball as everyone else.

      • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:12 am

As a beat up 30 something catcher, Posey’s the only one with an excuse…

  5. Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:29 am

Heard that The Dick had the most RBI’s (9) in his first two games played in SF history. He broke the record of 8 held by……John Bowker.

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:37 am

      Yikes.

  6. zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:41 am

We haven’t had some Beatles in a few days. This is John’s demo recording of “Across the Universe.” A great song, and I’m such a huge fan of John’s voice.

  7. Macdog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:51 am

Todd Frazier hit a HR Saturday at Wrigley that he thought had no chance of going out, throwing his bat in disgust and jogging to first expecting it to be an out and even admitting so after the game. On and on it goes.

  8. sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:09 am

Maybe it is a good thing we didn’t sign Harper. For me, getting Harper was predicated on expecting the infield to collectively bounce back and be a solid group. Hasn’t happended.

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:17 am

also, Harper has been pretty bad this year. His OBP would be up if he was with us considering all the walks he would be getting.

  9. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:27 am

It’s one thing to lose when you have some confidence with are starting pitching staff, but to keep letting Pomeranz go out there is asinine!
Boch is losing credibility still giving him starts, he adds nothing but an automatic loss..

  10. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 24, 2019 at 9:55 am

Took the series despite getting no Dick yesterday (0-3).

  11. gianthead said, on June 24, 2019 at 11:03 am

I did see that when mlb channel cur into the game…it is ridiculous what is becoming of the game. I noted our Dick opposite field triple and the Flodger game winner Friday night being like hit cue balls. Ridiculous and topped by that ridiculous game winner. On the hands and he takes to right center…the Flodgers are the ultimate juiced ball team. Will eventually get shut down in the playoffs..

  12. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 24, 2019 at 11:52 am

Nice write up in The Athletic on Darren Baker who’s currently playing in the Cape Code League. Here’s a snippet.

“One scout who knows Darren well from the Pac 12 games says, “what helps him improve constantly is that he knows who and what he is. He’s barely six feet, maybe 160 pounds. He’s not his father, but he works on his bunting, he always runs hard and plays hard.

At Cal, Baker batted .273 as a freshman, .306 as a sophomore. One scout thinks “he could hit a lot more next year and be an interesting draft pick, if he prefers to sign rather than stay around for his senior year and graduate. He is smart. He’s also a very smart baseball player.” Indeed, he was 21-for-21 stealing in 2019. Oh yes, and he also played in every one of Cal’s 52 games.”

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:36 pm

He sounds Dee Gordon-ish, and that’s not bad, IMO.

      • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:38 pm

Gordon has carved out a 9-year MLB career so far.

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 24, 2019 at 2:02 pm

Sort of what I thought too. Hey, the club took a flyer on Duston’s kid in a recent draft. I’d be okay if they did the same for the Little Lizard ™

  13. zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:40 pm

The folks at WAR are still icy cold towards Adam Jones. He starts the day with a 0.1 WAR.

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:42 pm

      Craw -0.3. Ouch.

  14. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:44 pm

    and longo is 1.3

  15. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2019 at 12:48 pm

There is something inherently wrong with war.

  16. alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2019 at 1:17 pm

    Drew Pomeranz..WAR -1.3 ..2-7 record..7.09 ERA
1.781 WHIP and he’s still starting WHY????

  17. zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 1:22 pm

That 1.3 WAR for Longo strikes a nerve with Flappers. 🙂

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 3:27 pm

it doesn’t strike a nerve, it’s just clear evidence that WAR is stupid.

  18. djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 3:44 pm

Pomeranz has several incentive/roster bonuses in his deal.
It would be smart to release him before he reaches any more of them…

    • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 3:46 pm

Do they really fuckin’ need me to tell them that?

  19. djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 5:22 pm

    Didn’t expect this variation:

    1. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
    2. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
    3. Buster Posey (R) C
    4. Pablo Sandoval (S) 1B
    5. Kevin Pillar (R) CF
    6. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
    7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
    8. Donovan Solano (R) SS
    9. Drew Pomeranz (R) P

    • Macdog said, on June 24, 2019 at 5:27 pm

Another $100G for Pomeranz making his 14th start. Ca-Ching!

  21. zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 6:08 pm

Lil Yaz and the Dick leading off the lineup; a chance to really shake up the batting order if they can do well.

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 6:13 pm

and of course Posey locked into the 3 spot for absolutely zero reason except history from long ago…..

  25. unca_chuck said, on June 24, 2019 at 7:53 pm

    Bombs Away!!

  27. snarkk said, on June 24, 2019 at 7:56 pm

I was listening to this tilt on radio, outside. Belt, something like 2 for the roadie. Panik 3 for the last 23 on the roadie, then grounds out weakly. Solano? Not a restaurant row street in N. Berkeley. No, a dude who drops a throw at second for an error. Now, Pom gives up the oppo homer to some Rocky I’ve never heard of. 70 total HRs hit (20 more on road than at Oracle), 112 given up. Team BA .221 at home. I’m really tired of this S. This is the third year of it. Am I wrong to be sick of this? Trade them all. Every single last one of the vets. Not Vogt. Not Pablo. For nothing, I don’t care. Bring AA players up, play ’em. Rant over. Back to the deck, and my double vodka+ Lillet “martini” with a twist of pissed off…

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 7:58 pm

Snarkk– I think we need a Flapalooza to lift your spirits. What are you doing Fri? Diggity is trying to fire me up, I think it sounds like a good idea. What do you guys say? Flapalooza this Fri?

      • djloo27 said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:04 pm

I don’t know why you guys don’t do it more often.
Are you all that spread out?

      • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:09 pm

        yes

    • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:01 pm

If it makes you feel any better, the error on Solano was a horrible call. Should have gone to Panda for a shit throw.

      • alleykat69 said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:08 pm

Shit throw? It was in his glove a full second before the runner got there,That’s not on Panda, it’s Solano for not keeping both his glove and right hand locked in, the dude just kicked it out, inexcusable..

      • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:16 pm

It WAS a shit throw. He short hopped it 3 feet from the bag and caught it deep in the web. Then he had to haul ass to put the tag on over at the base. Totally on Panda!

  28. sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:03 pm

Anderson on the mound. We can get upper deck behind the plate tickets (a fine place to catch a game at Oracle in my book) for less than $20 each.
We love baseball. We love the Giants. We love each other. Its time like these when the true fans show up.
    Who’s with us????

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Diggity you can get lower box seats down the left field line (or right field line) for $15.

      • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:06 pm

On a Friday night–with Sean Freaking Anderson on the mound???????

    • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:08 pm

Alright, alright, I’ll stick to recruiting—you pick the seats….

  29. snarkk said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:08 pm

What about San Jose instead. They’re playing Friday night at 7 at home. vs. Stockton Ports. Bart, Ramos, cheaper beer, good BBQ. it’s a great time out?…

    • Flavor said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:10 pm

tough for me to get jazzed about a SJ game when Shawn Freaking Anderson is toeing the rubber but 50 miles north……

      • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:11 pm

The only thing better would be Black Shoes Beede on the mound.

  30. zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:08 pm

I will be at Friday’s game in the Club Level. That all came together yesterday.

    • zumiee said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:10 pm

      • sandog said, on June 24, 2019 at 8:40 pm

“Down the peninsula” Hadn’t heard that one in a while. My relatives in the Portola District used to always use that expression. Confused me when I was a kid.

DVDs from Netflix, Zum? I’ve been carting around a bunch of CDs and DVDs, but with a faulty DVD drive in my laptop, I’m thinking using disks is done for me. Just moved out of my apartment and threw out those disks. It pained me. But obviously online is it now, and laptops are hardly being produced with disk drives anymore….

This post-game dude Willard on KNBR is horrendous. Now, he’ll get 4, not 3 hours in the evening on non-game nights. Fitzgerald also gone from KNBR, but apparently stays as TV guy for Dubs. Won’t miss “Fitz” in the slightest. He had to go. No way Papa and he could be at the same station at same time. Papa always holds a grudge on Fitz for taking his Dubs TV gig years ago…
