A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Shocking Suckitude

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 26, 2019

When I looked at this team last Spring, objectively, it was painfully obvious that this was going to be a last place team. Now nearly 3 months into the season, it’s amazing to look at just how many of our players played down to my expectations. Every single hitter who started the season with us has sucked. Except the Panda but he’s not in the starting line up.

On the pitching side, it hasn’t been quite as bad. Will Smith is the only player we have who has exceeded expectations. All the starting pitchers have under-performed but they have at least had their moments of respectability. And actually the relievers other than Smith have been good, they just haven’t been as dominant as Smith has been. Few in the league have.

Pillar, Dickerson and Yaz have been bright spots. I guess that’s what you look for in a lost season. That, and the trade deadline. Our World Series starts and ends July 31st…

Austin is OK too, adds some power. Nice insurance run last night tho really all of above save Pillar might be Bowker gang material After scoring binge of 26 runs in 3 games on road Giants have scored 7 in last 3 and 4 runs total in 2 home games. Pitching has been stellar which has resulted in close competitive games like last 3. 12-10 this month.
Giants trade deadline guys are really only Smith Watson and Bum. At some point they all have to be replaced, along with Smardz M and Pomeranz, almost half the staff
Hey get all the prospect hitters you want, but don’t forget pitching.

I think Bumgarner has begun resurrecting his career after the 2 injuries. The increased velocity this season is a major surprise to me. If the money and years aren’t too insane, I think they should absolutely try to re-sign him as a FA like the Yanks did with Chapman. He’s a victim of the juiced ball like anyone else…

  3. alleykat69 said, on June 26, 2019 at 9:14 am

Solano has been a pleasant surprise to me.He’s stepped up his game since first coming up, now contributing some key hits and good defense overall, should get more time spelling Panik&Crawford imo.
Another positive to me is the Giants Bench has been the best in years imo.Austin,Panda,Solano,Vogt etc have done the job, Giants are tied with the D-backs for most PH HR’s at 7 so we can proudly say atleast we’re leading the league in one category!!

    • snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 9:25 am

Well said, Kat. Vogt should be the regular catcher, shoulder and all. Posey is a ghost at bat. He’s got to be hurt. If not, he should retire at end of the season…

      • djloo27 said, on June 26, 2019 at 9:52 am

Of course Posey or anyone else wouldn’t walk away from millions, but maybe that insurance thing which I’ve never understood could be used…

Ok, Snarkk, Unca, WillieD and San Dawg, I am buying our tickets now, you can pay me back when I see you at the game. Zumiee, we will hook up with you there for a beer, I know you’re in the Club

i decided to get tix in the arcade. Never sat there before and I want an HR ball off Belt’s bat so I can rip it out the air, turn around and throw it in the *ocean*

Loo if I was you, I’d go and get all fired up for tonight’s game by listening to the Slavic Soul Party at the Plaza downtown Brooklyn. I know it’s not the 2019 Flapalooza, but it’s free and goes from 6:30 – 8:30, just sayin’.

We should be demanding a premium for Will Smith…like taking Longoria!!! Or Belt.

Did anyone see my Bum to A’s idea? Thoughts on who the A’s would be willing to give up???

  7. gianthead said, on June 26, 2019 at 11:09 am

I had been in the contingent supporting and guessing they would re-sign Bum even if traded. Now I think that is not just unlikely but unwise. Think he is destined for the AL and will face a gree agent market like Keuchel just did. I think he would be lucky if he got traded to the A’s and maybe helps put them in wild card and they offer him a 3 year $45 mill deal. Dont think anyone is going much higher than that for years or dollars…

    • djloo27 said, on June 26, 2019 at 11:54 am

I promise you he gets nothing short of 5 years/$125 million.
      This is Madison Fuckin’ Bumgarner!!!

Bet a pop on that? Of course I would have to go to Citi Field to collect…

Other teams don’t like giving up Grand slams,so Shark 🦈 will stay here unfortunately especially with his unmovable contract.

  14. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 1:44 pm

Smarj-type contracts will never happen again. Teams will never sign a journeyman pitcher like that to such a huge contract.

Adios Pablito! 2-2 with a bomb. Gotta believe he’s played himself into the trade market. Still would rather see him stay.

    • alleykat69 said, on June 26, 2019 at 1:52 pm

Dirt,I just don’t see Panda going anywhere with his cheap contact, and Bochy career bromance with him.I hope he stays only cause he’s one of the few I enjoy watching this year..

      • dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 26, 2019 at 2:33 pm

Tend to agree. I’d like to see him stay through the season. He’s basically playing for a new contract so…

  21. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 3:26 pm

The Dodgers started a rookie pitcher and he got shelled, so that’s amusing.

  22. Macdog said, on June 26, 2019 at 3:40 pm

Posey batting with a runner on first and less than two out is not a good situation.

  23. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 3:43 pm

Panik swings at ball 4 and pops out, and Posey grounds into a double-play. And that’s the ballgame.

    • alleykat69 said, on June 26, 2019 at 3:48 pm

Yep, your down 3 you get a leadoff hit, 3-1 on Panik and he should be takin all the way but nooo!
And then Posey? just no words anymore on how pathetic his bats are.Who knows if even Panik took ball 4, that Posey’s feeble attempt might have turned into a triple play..

  24. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 3:49 pm

The Dodgers are a cocky group these days. They started Pederson at first base for no reason (he made two errors), and Russell Martin pitched the 9th inning when they were trailing by 6 runs.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 26, 2019 at 4:06 pm

All the better when they crater in the playoffs.

        Yes!

  25. Flavor said, on June 26, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Does Bochy have the balls to just keep batting Posey 3rd all season? He shuffles everyone else up and down the line up but he leaves our worst hitter in the 3 hole. Today he only got one at bat, still coughed up 2 outs with it.

    • zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 4:48 pm

Probably the the first priority of a baseball manager is to put your players in situations where they can be successful. Bochy’s not doing that for Posey in the batting order.

      • zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 4:53 pm

If Posey is a .240s-hitting catcher now, with little power, then, frankly, he should be batting 8th. Bochy won’t do that to Posey, I get that, but at least 6th or 7th is reasonable.

We had the album “Johnny Cash at San Quentin” when I was a kid. Listened to it many many times. Great album.

      • snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 6:55 pm

I’ve heard most of the At Folsom Prison album, though I don’t have it. Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues, and Jackson (w/ June Carter) are pretty special IMO. Lyrics in lots of ’em not PC, but you have to remember the time, and the audience. There aren’t any characters around like Johnny Cash or Roger Miller (Dang Me!, King o’ the Road) anymore. I’m not as familiar with the San Quentin material, other than A Boy Named Sue and a couple other of his standard repertoire at the time. It was recorded apparently in ’69, where Folsom was recorded in ’68. Internet reviews say Folsom was better, but I dunno. It has a lot more tracks. In those days, the Man in Black was pretty damn ragin’ all the time, so he had to be good at the Q, too…

  32. snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 7:56 pm

He’s got rings, but IMO Posey isn’t close to being HOF material if he doesn’t snap out of whatever he’s in, and get going. He needs to get a lot closer to 2000 hits, for one thing. Play in a lot more games. He’s only got 4357 ABs over about 10.5 season in MLB. or about 415 ABs/season.

Hits, HRs, OPS, WAR, Games played

    Buster: 1320, 136, .832, 41, 1199
    Bench 2048, 389, .817, 75, 2158 (gold standard)
    Molina: 1914, 150, .738, 39, 1934
    Yogi: 2150, 358, .830, 60, 2120 (impressive, especially for his size)
    Carter: 2092, 324, .773, 70, 2296 (surprisingly strong stats to me)
    Dickey: 1969, 202, .868, 58, 1789
    Fisk: 2356, 376, .797, 68, 2499 (iron man)
    Piazza: 2127, 427, .922, 60, 1912 (PEDS era)
Munson: 1558, 113, .756, 46, 1423 (died at 32, age of Posey right now, about same number of seasons)

    • djloo27 said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:43 pm

Posada and his 4 rings lasted about 10 minutes on the ballot.
Ted Simmons was another C who could really rake.

Manfred is not diggin’ you guys. But, I am…

  35. alleykat69 said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:35 pm

Posey’s OPS in the last 3 years .861 to .741 to now .690 his decline is obvious.Could he get back on track? Only if he plays 1B starting next year( preferably more this year, his numbers are so much better there, plus the wear and tear will only be helpful, but know way under Bochy’s bromance watch will this happen as Z gives him the unfortunate slack till this bitter season ends.Kinda sucks Z just sits back waiting for Boch to split, but I guess he doesn’t want to disgrace a 3 time W/S championship.Switch Belt to LF are probably trade Belt, bring up Bart and have Posey mentor him, and pray Posey’s numbers improve .Won’t be enough now for the HOF sadly..

    • snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:45 pm

Posey doesnt’t want to take 1b on a near FT basis, because it screws his HOF chances as a catcher, low as they are at this point…

  36. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:44 pm

Posey was on a Hall of Fame path until his hip problems in the last couple of years. I think the key thing he still needs is 2,000 hits. It’s not looking good for that.

    • snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:47 pm

Yeah, looks like no chance at 2000. He may not event get to 1600. He’s playing (when he plays) like he’s 45 years old…

  37. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:48 pm

“He’s only got 4357 ABs over about 10.5 season in MLB. or about 415 ABs/season.”

You’re counting this ‘19 partial season in the average, and you’re counting his September ‘09 call-up season when he had 17 ABs. That skews everything.
His plate appearances for a person who mostly plays catcher are otherwise respectable.

    • snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:54 pm

I’m going with baseball-reference stats and the seasons listed there as in MLB. Trying to compare apples to apples with the other guys. I used 10.5, though he’s listed in BR with 11. We can argue about the average/season. The bottom line is he’s way low in games played and ABs and hits for potential HOF consideration. He needs more stats for the HOF, and I don’t see him getting them, unless he starts playing and hitting like he’s 32, not 42. But, that’s just my opinion. He lost a season to the broken leg, yeah, that’s a no-denying factor in his lower-end position in the comparative stats range…

  38. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:54 pm

Posey has all the HOF hardware necessary, but he needs those 2,000 hits.
    He already has:
    3 World Series rings
    Rookie of the Year
    MVP
    Batting title
    .300 lifetime hitter
    Gold Glove

    • zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:55 pm

      Several Silver Slugger awards
      Several All Star appearances

      • zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 8:59 pm

Plus (and this isn’t fair to a lot of other Giants) there’s the national perception that the Giants won the 3 rings with Bochy, Posey, a couple of key pitchers, and a cast of over-achieving no-names.

  39. snarkk said, on June 26, 2019 at 9:05 pm

Virtually all commentators agree Bochy should be a lock for the HOF with three titles. But, otherwise he’s been a .500 manager over the course of 2000+ games managed. Why should he be a lock to the HOF, basically out of longevity of “meh” with a short run of excellence, but the major contributors to his short run of excellence won’t get into the HOF, but were arguably spectacular during that run? (Posey, Timmy, Bum, Cain, the Beard and rest of core 4). I’m biased, but IMO Timmy should be in the HOF because of his unique contribution of excellence and star power to that period of the Giants and the game. He has as much right to be a HOFer, IMO, as Bochy…

        Here, too…

  40. zumiee said, on June 26, 2019 at 9:24 pm

Wins are not as important a stat for pitchers as they used to be, but Timmy still doesn’t have enough career wins. It didn’t help that he and Cain got Cained so many times by lack of offensive support.
The 3 rings (with the SF Giants?!!) and number of total career wins make Bochy a lock for HoF. All the other managers with the same credentials are in the Hall.
Plus Bochy took a Padre team to the World Series. That’s another feather in his cap.
Plus people really like Bochy on a personal level. That doesn’t hurt his cause.
