A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Doubled Up Again

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 6, 2019

The bright shine from last Friday’s Flap supernova is gone. Dimmed and diluted, we are back to the reality of this hopeless season. You know, watching PomPom get blasted might not be so bad if he didn’t take a 30 minute dinner break in between pitches.

Anyway, none of this is surprising. Tonight is our best shot at snagging a victory but a sweep is still the most likely outcome.

Kawhi makes his move, seismic shift in both NBA conferences.
Daniel’s blog is little different too, less day to day long columns of analysis and commentary. Cards in dogfight this season, interesting to see what they do…grab a bat or help the pen. Always amazed at their farm system though. That new 3b blasted a triple to deepest part of yard last night.

  2. willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 8:39 am

That first inning was so disheartening. Pom was awful, giving up 2 400 ft bombs to Martinez and Golds. That Golds bomb was just crushed to deep CF. Right away giants are down 3-0.

Then the Cards SP can’t find the plate, 2 walks sandwiched around Posey single load bases with no one out.
Dick swings at dumb pitch and lofts weak fly to LF that almost results in Belt getting doubled off 3b. He had short lead off the bag before the LF caught the ball, went back to tag, then bluffed a few steps and almost didn’t get back as throw came in. This is right in front of Wotus! Wtf was he doing? He drew a throw that was right on money and almost got tagged out.

Longo has a worse AB than Dick, striking out on check swing on ball in the dirt way out of the zone. Finally Pillar grounds single past 3b and then another walk to Crawford with sacks loaded scores run #2. Just could have been much more had Giants been able to square up a big hit when kid did find the plate. Instead they fouled off decent pitches. And never got another walk all night while Cards continued to rake.

I have not even watched one complete MLB game this year. Parts of a few. Who knows why.

    • willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 8:52 am

every Giants and A’s game is televised here. I rarely listen to Krukow/Kuiper feed at all though I watch and follow along on cbssite.
Thanks for the post on Blanco sighting. It’s cool you still hit local minor league games. Good luck with new book. Every time we get Daniel on here I’m reminded of Starry Night, which he was part of along with other bloggers from contenders involved in that whole story.

I should fly to SF just for my mental health (Magnus knows some reasons why, as Father Confessor); maybe I will go to Rome in October. But would I stay, with a Claudia Cardinale or Gina Lolabrigida type?

Once Upon a Time in the West.
Great movie. One of the greatest soundtracks ever. courtesy Ennio Morricone.
The very first scene with Charles Bronson is one of the great first scenes in cinema.
Henry Fonda, his only role as the bad guy. Trust me, he was really bad, too.
If you’ve never seen this flick, do yourself a favor and see it. You’ll be blown away.
      And — Claudia Cardinale.
      Unbelievably gorgeous. Wow…

K&K made interesting comments about the juiced baseball recently. I hadn’t really thought much about how the ball is affecting infielders on groundballs. They talked about how they’ve never before seen so many infielders getting handcuffed by rocketing grounders.

  7. zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:54 am

The A’s broadcasters talked about how their thirdbaseman plays deeper than any thirdbaseman they have ever seen. He has such a strong arm he can get away with it. And he’s so great at coming in on slow grounders.
In so many ways, it’s not the same game it was just a few years ago when the Giants were winning the 3-in-5.
Tweaking the baseball has changed things a lot. MLB claims they never asked for the balls to be tweaked. But they’re not making any effort to change them back, either.

  8. zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:57 am

So, really, what chance does a guy like Pom have in today’s game anyway? The laces of the ball are tighter to the ball now, so pitchers who rely on curveballs are having a harder time getting the grip they need to pitch a good curveball.
Pom has turned out to be a really bad signing by Zaidi. His contract is cheap, so he could easily be DFA-ed without any drama from the front-office.

    • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:11 am

      This is Bom-Bom’s deal:

      Drew Pomeranz (LHP)
      1 year/$2M (2019)

      1 year/$1.5M (2019)
Signed by San Francisco as a free agent 1/23/19

      Performance bonuses:

      $250,000 each for 25, 50 innings pitched.
      $125,000 each for 2, 4, 6, 8 games started.
      $100,000 each for 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 27, 30 GS.
      $200,000 for 32 GS

      Roster bonuses:

$500,000 for making active Major League roster on Opening Day (met).
$250,000 each for 90, 120 days on active Major League roster.
$500,000 for 150 days on active Major League roster

Giants can still save about a million if they get rid of him in time.

BTW, The Oven is owed about $3.75 million at the moment, so I doubt he’s going anywhere…

      • Flavor said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:24 am

they shoulda skipped all those and just given him a $500million dollar bonus for making the all star team. He woulda taken that

    • alleykat69 said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:19 am

Then Z-man should jettison Pom now, why waste another pitchers progress? Giants could contact all 32 teams about him and the line would go static with a bad connection immediately followed by laughter..

  9. djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:36 am

If the Giants truly intend to fix the ballpark as most people seem to think, shouldn’t they announce it ASAP, or the day the season ends? It might help attract guys who can actually hit. I wonder how much planning and engineering goes into it and how long it will actually take…

    • Bozo said, on July 6, 2019 at 1:17 pm

The environmental impact report will take some time and money to get through the scratching of the backs process. The public forums will bring out noise and traffic concerns from pretty much the whole city, but mainly from the neighbors in the pricey condos across the street, again slowing any construction until all the right and left palms are greased.

      • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 2:41 pm

I’m surprised, Bozo. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal with everything taking place inside the park…

      • xoot said, on July 6, 2019 at 3:01 pm

The “project” for CEQA purposes will be the park itself as remodeled. No new impact there. I’ll bet you they can bypass the EIR. Construction noise and pollution will require some city permits and neighborhood graft, but that’ll move quick. The big problem is how to hype the renovation. Now that Larry’s back, those wheels are rolling I’m sure.

Using high frequency sound to scare away the gulls, now that might raise EIR CEQA disputes.

      • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Never been in the yard, but I don’t think there needs to be much in the way of destruction.

    • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:55 am

Cesar Cedeno was the first guy I ever heard of that was supposed to be “the next Mays”.
Kirk Gibson was supposed to be the next Mantle.
Ever notice that in sports they seem to only compare guys by race?
Especially obvious in football with QB & WR stereotypes…

Bobby Murcer was the next Mantle as well. I remember when he got here, those comparisons slowed some. He did have a coupe solid seasons with the Giants in those dark days of the mid 70s though.

    • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 11:32 am

I think that was more for being his successor and that they were both from Oklahoma and signed by the same scout. No one ever thought Murcer would approach Mantle’s power…

    • gianthead said, on July 6, 2019 at 4:53 pm

Not I. Maybe wille. I thought the Dubs would get him on the one-year $6.5 mill limit.

  16. snarkk said, on July 6, 2019 at 2:22 pm

Paul George forced OKC to trade him to the Clips. He bailed on Westbrook and OKC fans after signing a multi-year deal last year. Is he going to get clobbered by the media and fans like was done to Durant? Probably not, and I don’t see the double standard rationale. Nobody in top tier wants to play with Westbrook. Nor with Lebron, other than Anthony Davis. Boogie just needed a contract from anybody, and Lakers were willing. IMO the Dubs can make the playoffs next season in a 5-8 position, and if Klay is available, they could make a bit of noise in the playoffs…

  21. willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 5:53 pm

Watson has been a little funky lately, but any NL team that is going to have to face LA in playoffs has to be in on him to handle their LH power. Dyson btw is a good call. He’s easily forgotten about, has reasonable salary (arb eligible next year) and isn’t a rental. Nice column on him couple days ago MLBTR. And the guy has been lights out this year and really only has that bad stretch in Texas against him.

  22. zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 5:57 pm

BF got it. Felipe Crespo hit those two Splash hits.
Loo, you’re thinking of F.P. Santangelo, a similar player. F.P. is the color analyst on Nats TV broadcasts, and yes he’s annoying. But maybe a little less annoying as time has gone on. But he used to do things like brag about how good-looking his wife is. I wonder if they’re even still married.

    • zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 6:02 pm

      According to wikipedia:
Santangelo has married twice; his second marriage was to Playboy Playmate Michelle McLaughlin. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia.
Santangelo′s first marriage produced two children, who as of March 2018 attended college in California.

My thought on Cousins was only that warriors could use him, not for any max money. Give him more time before season starts to condition and work on his fitness and inside game. Hey their front court right now is Looney Jones Green and McKinnie, plus the rook from Nova, Paschall, who might be a steal.

    • willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 5:59 pm

and Cauley Stein. Zum I’m waiting for the scouting report on him!

      • zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 6:12 pm

Skinny very tall guy, with lots of potential. Very athletic. Beef him up! The opposite of Cousins’ physique. Cauley-Stein’s tattoos on his face and neck are off-putting. He needs to rebound better. He has nice post-up moves around the basket. Not much of an outside shooter. Terrible free throw shooter, but is getting a little better at it. Can run the fast break like a gazelle. Awesome at slamming alley-oops on the run. Good shot-blocker. I could see the Warriors utilizing his abilities well. There was no future for him with the Kings with Bagley on the scene.

      • willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 7:07 pm

thx Zum.. Few times I saw him noticed Kings used him at elbow high post. doesn’t sound like he can hit that shot though Warriors use that position on offense too. comps were made with JaVale McGee for lobs off high screen and roll, which is supposed to be a strength of D A Russell’s game. Warriors are going to be desperate for defensive rebounders and shot blockers…his numbers didn’t seem to be great on either. hmmnn
Dis on him as reported by Warriors guys was that Kings didn’t think he fit their fast pace offense. True?

      • zumiee said, on July 6, 2019 at 7:28 pm

I wouldn’t say that. His issue is more on defensive rebounding. His inability to get a big rebound at the end of a few games cost the Kings in some close games.

He’ll be fine. It’s like getting HBP.
Still 25 days to the TD…

If he did it from memory, I’d be impressed…

        There’s no way he did.

I friggin’ predicted this kind of hit by batted ball injury shit for Bum. They should sit his ass now until they trade him…

    • djloo27 said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:27 pm

He’s going to have to prove he’s healthy at some point after the break.
      Maybe he misses one start…

Dickerson is a lot of fun to watch. Big grin on his face when does something good.

    Pablomb!

  55. snarkk said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:45 pm

Used to be, if you were picked for the homer inning participant, you’d win $10K for a grand slam. Now, a homer of any kind will get you two days stay at some hotel in Reno. WTF?…

  56. willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:54 pm

Pablo having quite a night great snag almost gunned the guy down at 1b.

  57. willedav said, on July 6, 2019 at 9:56 pm

Watson not increasing the trade value.

Pillar plays with a lot of fire. This team has gotten an identity in the last week or so. Some life on the team. Actual winning going on.

    • snarkk said, on July 6, 2019 at 10:16 pm

IMO, it’s Dick that lit the fire, as soon as he got to that first game in Arizona and started cranking hits and HRs all over the place Amazing what an OFer with a power bat can actually do for a team…

A real outfield and a real bench!

Pads take 2 in a row in the latrine.

    • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:55 am

yeah very impressive. Their kid SP Paddack shutout LA into 6th and they hit 2 bombs off Maeda for 3-1 W. Lost first one vs. Ryu for 5 th L in a row but bounced back.
I think Loo’s math is right–10 day IL bum would miss 1 start after AS break.
