A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Relax

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 7, 2019

So I’ve collected myself a bit since last night realizing there are still 3 weeks of games to go before the trade deadline. Maybe Bum misses a start? Either way, he has to come back and show he’s healthy or no team is going to offer shit for him.

Slater, Pillar and all the Dick you can handle. That outfield might not produce too many wins but it’s the outfield I’d like to see trotted out there for a few weeks straight. Three hungry, fast dudes. Why not?

Brewers likely to miss out on the chance to see Bum up close in their own park right after the break.
    Pool implications?

    • unca_chuck said, on July 7, 2019 at 9:54 am

Yeah, I have Bummie to the Brew Crew. All he has to do though is rub out a good start or 2 before the deadline. I’m sure all these teams have scouts attending games.

  2. willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 8:33 am

someone mentioned opener last night and that’s kind of way it worked out. 2 innings for Bum Dyson followed by Moronta M Watson Smith. Except for the golds 3 run bomb it worked pretty well. If you saw that, the pitch from Watson was on the black outside corner at the knees and he hit it just barely over RF wall down the line very short distance for HR—nothing like the one he crushed to deep CF and at back of the wall behind the fence off Poms.

Lead story on MLBTR says Arrieta could need season ending surgery for bone spur that he admits has been bothering him after he got bombed yesterday by Mets.

So far I have picks for these 17 entrants:

    AlleyKat
    Big Flavor
    Bozo
    Cardinal 70
    DJ Loo
    Gianthead
    James
    MacDog
    Pasalon
    Paul in Asia
    Pawlie Koko
    SanDog
    Snarkk
    SportsDude
    Unca Chuck
    Willedav
    Zumiee

Any changes to your picks or new entrants (Where’s Xoot, Dirt, Blade, Wilco, Kev?) must be time stamped by 9:00 PM tonight on the blog. Keep in mind, you do have the option of picking Bum and/or Smith to stay with the Giants and not be dealt.

  5. zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 9:12 am

If the Giants do a lot of crazy winning in July, I think things really change. It has to give Zaidi pause. And Baer and the owners would probably step in anyway. They can’t look like they’re throwing in the towel while the Giants are making a surge.
Will the surge last? Probably not, but the team has finally become fun to watch this season.
The odds are the trades still happen, but the odds are slightly less strong than they were about a week and a half ago.

    • Macdog said, on July 7, 2019 at 9:24 am

Two parts to that. First, they have to win today and take another series. Second, they’ll have to go 4-3 in the post-ASB series at Milwaukee and Colorado that includes a doubleheader at Coors. If they can do that, it might, as you say, give Z pause.

    • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 10:09 am

Other thing to remember though, there are at least 7-8 teams “in contention” right now for those 2 WC spots that all have better records than Giants do right now– 3 in West 3 or 4 teams in Central at least 2 in East. That’s a pretty big hill to climb to get past that many teams with their young pitching and new OF. You are right tho Zum, Giants sure lot more interesting these days.

    Overhaul for me:

    Bum: Braves
    Smith: Astros
    Tiebreaker: Dyson-Rays

  7. unca_chuck said, on July 7, 2019 at 9:57 am

Sure they can dump. As well they should. I mean, unless we jump 4-5 teams in the next 3 weeks, we aren’t gonna do shit.

I will definitely say the team is a shit-ton funner to watch than the Connor Joe from Kokomo and Michael Reed team.

  8. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 7, 2019 at 10:12 am

    Bumgarner: Twins
    Smith: Red Sox

    • djloo27 said, on July 7, 2019 at 10:38 am

Very good, Dirt. Just need you to pick a tiebreaker…….

Tiebreaker: Pick a 3rd Giant who will get dealt (or waived, DFA’ed whatever) and the team he lands on.

  9. willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 10:15 am

Bum’s next turn might come as Loo mentioned Friday vs. Brewers, which would be normal rest. If not his next turn would come getaway day the 17th Wed at Rox which I doubt they would do. If he is to be place on 10 day IL he could make home start Thursday night 18th.

  10. Macdog said, on July 7, 2019 at 10:18 am

    Baggs tweeted after the game:

Bochy said he expects Bumgarner to be OK to make his next start, which is scheduled for Saturday in Milwaukee. If they need to push him back, they will. Swelling from contusion was the issue.

      I love that line up

      • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 12:37 pm

really? Panik hitting second Longo third Slater 7th? As well as he’s done June/July I’m surprised Pillar hits lower in the order too.

      • Flavor said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:52 pm

Yes. Belt on top, Vogt instead of Posey and all 3 of our best outfielders.

  13. wilcojoe said, on July 7, 2019 at 11:30 am

    Steven Vogt…

  15. snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 12:21 pm

My favorite lineup: Nov 1, 2010

    Andres Torres RF
    Freddy Sanchez 2B
    Buster Posey C
    Cody Ross LF
    Juan Uribe 3B
    Aubrey Huff 1B
    Pat Burrell DH
    Edgar Renteria SS
    Aaron Rowand CF
    Tim Lincecum P

    • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 12:41 pm

We had trouble then, and ever since then, at leading off. Remember when they’d trot Rowand out there leading off? Phew.

  16. pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 12:42 pm

Uribe. That homer to beat the Dodgers in LA. Big comeback. Uribe. Dominoes in the clubhouse. Where is he now?

    • alleykat69 said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:09 pm

Read a article where Uribe last played last for the Indians in 2016, but took a 106 mph rocket off of Mike Trout’s bat at 3rd base right in his nuts 🥜 ouch! Had a testicular injury.
Asked why he didn’t have a cup in place:”He said they don’t have a cup big enough for me to wear”!
Juan Uribe is a freakin Legend Now!!

    • snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:21 pm

I definitely remember that Uribe homer at LA in early September, top of 9th. I think it was a 3 run dinger to left center? Yes, huge, I think it actually won the game. 5-4 possibly?…

  17. willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 12:48 pm

Flaherty, Cards 23 yr old RH SP, made 28 starts last year threw 150 innings gave up 20 bombs.
In 90 innings this year he’s already given up 19. ERA hits allowed lot higher than last year too. Day game yard plays a little nicer…Giants might have to hit a few bombs to make up for what Smrdz gives up.

  18. snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:19 pm

Belt loses another homer to the ballpark dimensions…

    • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:26 pm

yeah thought that was gone. Pitch was right in his happy zone, middle of plate and low beneath strike zone so he can get fully extended.

  19. willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:31 pm

part of the problem with the whole sideline babe genre is airtime allotted to stupid stuff like AmyG talking about the players’ dogs and sharing cutesy pics. It’s just ridiculous and she seems to be the stuff she gets most satisfaction out of. Can you imagine Doris Burke asking Popovich about stuff like this on camera while game is going on?

  20. unca_chuck said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:32 pm

If Bummie shuts down the Brew Crew in Milw, I’m golden.

  21. pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:34 pm

    • snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:38 pm

Could be just a bit of a stretch for Amy G = sideline babe…

      • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:44 pm

    • Macdog said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:53 pm

I’m keeping track of your what-it-takes-to-come-back post from a couple days ago:

SFG gets to within five games under .500 (8)
      ADickboy reaches 10 homers (4)
      Hemingway’s Pilar reaches 55 RBIs (47).

      • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:31 pm

it’s beginning to look not so far-fetched, eh? plus, I’m already ‘back’

  23. Macdog said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:56 pm

We should have a contest, O/U on how many times Kuip gets fooled on fly balls he thinks are going out.

  24. zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 1:57 pm

The Amy G types on broadcasts help the teams market to women. MLB does a good job marketing to women. Plus the players don’t spit tobacco anymore. Women were disgusted by that.

    • zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:00 pm

The photos of the players’ dogs warmed the hearts of women in Giants Nation.

    • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:03 pm

OK Zum but women who are baseball fans and follow the team are way more knowledgeable about players and the game these days and I doubt give a flying F about who has the cutest dogs. The ladies who do twitter posts for other teams and that Maria guardado from Giants (?) are talking real baseball stuff in their posts.

And marketing by and large is one of lower life forms in any business.

      • zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:12 pm

My mom couldn’t tell you what an OPS is, but she can tell you how many kids the Crawfords, Poseys, and Belts have. And my mom never misses a game.

  26. snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:09 pm

It’s very Giants to have Amy G as their sideline “reporter”. Wholesome, sympathetic, not edgy.
A true, hot “babe” is just not their style.
Dubs had Ros Gold-Onwude outta Stanfoo. She was great, very hawt, knew her BBall.
Too good, onto TNT she went…

    • snarkk said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:25 pm

He frequently mixes up the batters and base runners…

  30. willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:13 pm

5 solid from Smrdz, give him credit. Now if Giants would um…
The kid 3b Munoz who made the tremendous play on slater gets their first hit and steals 2b. The other new IF Edman looks good too. what an amazing farm system they have.

  31. zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:17 pm

Great truth by Loggins about the National Anthem. “You have to start on the right note or you’re screwed.” If you start too high, the high notes later will destroy you. Roseanne Barr found that out, and many others have, too, over the years.

  32. alleykat69 said, on July 7, 2019 at 2:26 pm

    Dude is nails.
Trade him now over the break before something happens…

    • willedav said, on July 7, 2019 at 3:32 pm

Yep. There’s no reason they can’t trade these guys for good prospects, and re-sign one of ’em next season to anchor a Pen. Smith will cost a ton, assuming he keeps on truckin’…

    • zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 3:39 pm

There’s no way Smith gets traded over the break. Zaidi doesn’t want to get ridden out of town on a rail. He has to pick a time when the Giants are floundering again.

But it’s cool 😎 to get the entries in early…

  63. zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 5:17 pm

Hank tweeted something during the game that linked to his column in SF Chron re: interview with the Z. Here’s the headline: “We don’t feel like we have to do anything”
It’s a q and a with the Z who obfuscates a lot but maybe he’s just trying to sound noncommittal.
How would you guys feel if, like Zum said, he didn’t trade Bum Smith yada yada at deadline?

    • zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 5:57 pm

The winning complicates things. If they pass a few teams in the next couple of weeks, the clamor will be strong from the vast majority of Giants Nation to go for the ring this year, which is probably a fool’s gold chase, but Zaidi will be on a hot seat deciding the path forward.
      It’ll be interesting.

      • Flavor said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:50 pm

it complicates nothing. We are terrible. At best we are making a run at a few games under .500. Screw that. We need to trade anyone of value and get the most we can get.

    • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 8:04 pm

You mean I wasn’t the only moron to suggest Bum and Smith might not get traded?

  65. Cardinal70 said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:23 pm

As I said, I never count the Giants out. If Pillar doesn’t catch Goldschmidt’s drive, I do think it might have been a different game but that was a heck of a play (and a nice catch of Fowler’s drive right after that as well).

I keep hoping this Cardinal team will catch fire. Not sure if it’s even possible but thankfully the division is waiting around for them.

    • alleykat69 said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:35 pm

Nobody in your division is running away from anyone Daniel, it’s crazy, what 4 1/2 from top to bottom?I see the Cardinals as usual hanging around till the end,and probably winning it ..

  66. zumiee said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:26 pm

For the first time ever I have some respect for Machado. After losing game 1 to the Dodgers this week, Machado was quoted as saying the Padres would win the World Series before the Dodgers won one this century. He was already tired of the Padres being the Dodgers’ doormat. Maybe it helped fire his team up for the three wins.

  67. pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:38 pm

I don’t want to *imply (you can *infer, Macdog) that I’ve been good luck, but …

  68. pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:45 pm

I would love nothing better than for Zedman to have this dilemma: Jints stay hot, or get hotter, say 8 of 10, after ASG and the team starts to look viable. Hell, they’re near the bottom of the WC but creeping up. 5.5 GB is surmountable. Yeah, everyone else has to crash. Don’t worry about that. Winning will sort that out.

A miracle run as a sendoff for their beloved manager?
I’ve seen crazier things. Like 50 years ago.
    How’s Cueto coming along?

re williedav’s 1:58, I met Amy G at Finnerty’s, before ASG at Citi, after Timmy no-no. She was fine. I mean, she wasn’t like, oooh, you’re THE Paul Kocak?! She interviewed me with a little camera; it never aired as far as I know. To be fair to her, she seemed, like, why am I doing this, I’m tired, we flew all night, get me outta here. Who could blame her?

    • djloo27 said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:55 pm

      I could blame her.
      It’s called being a professional.
What the fuck better did her and her fat ass have to do at Finnerty’s except drink Guinness out of plastic cups?

      • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 6:58 pm

was that the same time I met you? I think that was later

      • Flavor said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:00 pm

Agree with loo. AmyG should have conducted the interview like a professional, realizing who she was talking with and then gone down on him at the end as a TY to Kokonuts for taking the time to speak with HER

Not sure, Pawlie. That day’s a blur.
You and Mac left me there with a bunch of 49er fans…

Mac, you coming to Syracuse for your Ithaca reunion thing? Speaking of Vladimir Nabokov by way of Ithaca, I watched Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita for the first time last week. James Mason is excellent, Shelley Winters, too, and Sue Lyon is okay, but Peter Sellers is insane! The whole thing is somehow funnier than I’d ever expect.

    • xoot said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:20 pm

The novel’s very funny too. “You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style.”

      • pawliekokonuts said, on July 7, 2019 at 8:15 pm

I read Lolita last year for the first time since college. It was funnier and more clever than I had remembered. The prose is delicious. Rare (OED stuff) and made-up words. One could argue there is not one salacious scene in it. First time, I did not even get that he masturbates hands-free near the beginning. No question, the book would not be published in the #metoo era. It’s challenging, to say the least. I have this running debate with a scholarly friend. He says Humbert *loves Lolita. Well, sort of. But no. He’s like the collector in The Collector by John Fowles. Love? Or hostage-taking? The reader can’t forget Humbert is raping and kidnapping an underage kid. But the genius of Nabokov is how he pulls off the whole stunt, if you will. (Last year I read The Real Lolita, about a girl from NJ kidnapped in 1948 for two years. Nabokov had to know about it, but he and his estate dismissed it bc they wanted to focus on the artifice of the fiction.)

      Is Vladmir Nabokov a FA?
      He’d look great in a Rangers jersey…

        hahaha

I didn’t see the game but just watched the highlights. Man, anyone that says Duggar is a better defensive player than Pillar, sorry, I ain’t buying it. And Pillar is obviously a much better hitter. I have no real interest in Duggar as anything more than a 4th outfielder, maybe plug him into a game late for Slater or The Dick.

    • djloo27 said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:13 pm

Well now that we’re dreaming of becoming buyers, I’ll give the Mets Duggar and Panik for Wheeler…

BF’s 6:50 is spot friggin’ on.
Was listening to Lurie’s post game. There are a lot of clueless SF fans out there that think this recent upgrade to actually playing decent ball means the Giants can get to the NLCS, if not the Series. They do realize this good game today was result of Giants getting 2 hits? They don’t get that Bum, Will Smith, Dyson all are FAs after this season, so they can and will likely leave anyway and the Giants get nothing except some draft picks, which is next to nothing as far as the near future is concerned. Let the trades begin…

    • djloo27 said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:17 pm

Of course I agree with you and BF, but if we’re offered shit for Bum and our pen studs…………..

    • Flavor said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:26 pm

the worst teams are going to win 60 games. We are a little better than the worst teams. Barely. Counting on a Slater pinch hit slam and Longo today (1 of 2 hits) is hardly a blueprint for success the rest of the season.

here’s the spreadsheet of Daniel’s *contest*. Not totally sure what I’m looking at here but it seems like UncaCHuck won our group

Let me simplify it for you:

  75. Flavor said, on July 7, 2019 at 7:28 pm

We’ll get offered much better than shit, especially for Smith, Z knows what these guys are worth and his fellow GM’s know he’s sharp. He is playing it perfectly with his public comments. I didn’t expect him to tell the world we’re sellers and then have him bend over and let the other GMs take turns on him
