A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

New Night New Hero

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 24, 2019

One underrated really fun thing about this incredible run the Giants have been on: Every win seems to crown another hero. You could also say this has been an ongoing example of *team baseball*. There is something to be said to having a bunch of scrubs, players that no other team wanted, coming together and making this happen. It does have a very *2010* feel to it, doesn’t it?

The main difference between then and now is that the 2010 had a rock solid pitching staff of studs. And that’s probably the main reason the Giants can’t keep this run going especially into the dog days of August and September.

Cue up the “Well if Zaidi becomes a buyer that fixes that….” crowd.

And that isn’t the worst argument in the world.

Any concerns about Dick going forward? Listening to KNBR they ran clip from Bochy saying he’s off on getaway day today and there’s no game Thursday. Schedule is 3 at Padres, day off Monday then 13 in a row–3 at Phils 3 at Rox then home for 3 with Nats and 4 with Phils.
would sure be nice to have him healthy and in LU more often than not.

    • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:24 am

Health is always going to bean issue for him but he did bang one out oppo last night so his back can’t be that bad. Remember tho, Mwc did hit one out I think right after he crashed into the wall. Fact check me on that but I think that’s true

      • willedav said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:27 am

yes I think you’re right. So did Panik iirc, back East (Was maybe?) or something. KNBR guys said Tolbert one minute had info no Dick for last night, then minute later said he was good to go and in the LU. Hope this isn’t case going forward, day to day shit.

      • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:36 am

Well the bottom line and I think we can all agree the pipeline of help coming from the minor leagues this year is probably pretty dried up at this point. If they’re gonna keep this run going all these dudes have to stay healthy

Feels a little more like the 1982 squad to me…

    • gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 9:58 am

Good reference…they had like the 2nd best record in the second half or a good portion..

  3. djloo27 said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:50 am

This leap-frogging shit is a rough business.
I feel like they should be closer than they are…

    • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:02 am

Well what did you think 0.9% meant when this all started? And going 9-1 over and over, this is going to end you’d think.

    • willedav said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:14 am

cards and Nats been hot too. Giants are still right there and they’ve already gone by all NL West teams.

  4. willedav said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:55 am

One good thing to come out of the winning ways is increased media attention, even to things like is Dick in the LU or not. And the sell or not discussion still goes on, lot of passion/insights from both sides.

NY must have been going crazy last night over Twins game 14-12 all the late rallies and exciting diving grab to end it. 3 blown saves, 2 by Twins 1 by Chapman who walked Triple 000 and he wound up scoring. 16 XBHs, 10 doubles 6 bombs.

Mets Robinson Cano hit 3 bombs 2 into upper deck at home as they beat Pads. guy has an effortless swing though I realize that word has been used to describe other parts of his game.

  5. willedav said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:18 am

Twins closer has now blown 2 of his last 3 saves, at home to A’s and last night to Yanks. They have a nice young team, hit a lot of bombs and play hard but that ain’t gonna cut it. They have supposedly good farm too.

  6. djloo27 said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:22 am

Even whipping boys Melon & Bom-Bom have come up big lately…

  7. unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:29 am

Panik had his moment as well, but I want to see more Solano. And the Belt is wearing thin. He’s putting up Posey-like numbers thes past couple months.

  8. alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:29 am

Giants had Duggar on standby if Dick couldn’t go.
Dick told Boch I’m good to go! Guess so with the bomb to invite the comeback again.
But yeah they will have to monitor him closely and really alot of guys need a blow after this grueling stretch of extra innings games and all.
I see alot of different players off today for sure,
Green will play 3rd,Vogt C,Solano 2B,Tyler Austin 1B,, OF Yaz LF..PillarCF but could use a day and Slater RF as hot as they are the old saying keep playing, but this day off on Tuesday should be a relief for many…

  9. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:47 am

All the talk about *buyers* and *sellers*, as if there’s nothing in between. How about just being *traders*? Maybe Z will accomplish everything with a few good trades: building for the future, dumping current dead weight, and adding a MLB-ready player to help with this run.

  10. alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:55 am

It’s heating up even more in this W/C race
Giants are about to leapfrog Milwaukee, and then have huge upcoming series with Phils&Nats those will be the deal breaker games one way are the other! Shit right now their only 2.5 games out of the 1st W/C spot as well..

  11. Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 9:48 am

by the way, the Flap views have been trending up with all the excitement of this run. In July we’ve already had 13,461 visitors with a week to go. Last July, for the entire month we only had 12,865. And, truth be told, every month this season is significantly higher than the last 2 corresponding seasons……

  12. gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 9:54 am

What is great about the addition of Yazzy Dick is that both hitters go the other way effortlessly. I think that has been the difference in their success versus the neo-Bowker gang types like Cheesy Mac, Parker and the revolving door of no-names (plus something Belt, Panik and Crawford dont seem to know how to consistently do…but Panda is also someone who can go the other way ala last night and especially hitting from the left).
In this new juiced ball era and hitters trying to swing hard with an upper cut on every swing with skyrocketing strikeout rates, success at the plate can be had just taking the ball the other way.

    • gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:03 am

A team that can put the ball in play with great pitching and defense can be a winner in any era…that is how we rebuild…

      • alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:19 am

That’s how the Redsox did it last year. And yes they still have some bombers, but they consistently put the ball in play and make D’s work harder cause of it..

      • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:19 am

you’re aware that during this streak they have been leading MLB in home runs right? They were up until a couple of days ago I don’t know where they stand now. But since June 1st or whatever they have led MLB in bombs up until very recently, possibly still.

      • gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:37 am

Flav, my point is that they are taking the pitch given like Panda got and trying to go the other way…they are not trying to pull and jack balls out as hard as they can swing…not it is frankly shocking with the team they have they could possibly have the most homers… I’m not saying not to try and jack homers out but to swing at the pitch and put it in play the best way you can…

      • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:34 am

GH, and my point is one that you seem to gloss over. They led MLB in bombs during that stretch of winning. They finally started playing the game the way other teams play it. Pitching and D, that’s great, but you have to be able to bang the ball out of the park to win CONSISTENTLY. Fact.

  13. Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:13 am

That Mueller hearing was ridiculous—trotting out that doddering old man and listen to him stammer, look confused and not even be able to answer simple questions was a huge blunder by the dems.

    • alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:24 am

Didn’t see it.Did Mueller have a Admiral Stockdale demitia moment when he was running with Perot in 92?

      • gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:39 am

Many Stockdale moments…classic SNL skit when Phil Hartman played Stockdale…”where am I????” All time classic..

    • zumiee said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:35 am

I see your point, but a high percentage of Americans aren’t reading the report so the Dems were hoping he would give some good sound bytes.
I’ve been reading the report on and off, and it’s lengthy, but it’s interesting and disturbing and important. It’s an incredibly valuable historical document of how Russia interfered with the election, and how a U.S. predident did a lot of stuff to try to block and hamper the investigation.
I’m all for impeachment, but I know that not all of the Left is onboard with that. There would be no guilty verdict because of needing a 2/3 guilty vote in the Senate, and that could have political ramifications.
But still….the House has an obligation to defend the Constitution. They literally take an oath. Impeachment would drive a spike in the moment, for history, and for the future of our republic.
      My opinion.

      • gianthead said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:45 am

By the way zum and I’m not going to hijack the blog, I have first hand knowledge from former colleagues that Dems were running all around Ukraine trying to dig up dirt on the Trump campaign and to benefit Clinton and this includes contacts with Clinton’s law firm representing her campaign Perkins & Coie. Same firm hired Christopher Steele. Guess what??? Steele is a foreigner. Is that not collusion on both fronts? Where are those investigations? Direct foreign collusion…Dems and media absolutely not interested. What we call a double standard..

3 questions I’d love for you to answer since I can’t get a single Trump supporter to answer any of the 3.
        1. Why won’t Trump admit Russia interferred in the election?
        2. Why won’t he condemn Putin for doing it?
        3. Why won’t he warn Putin to not do it again?

  14. Macdog said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:54 am

  15. unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 10:57 am

In the end this won’t do anything. In the end, Trump was right. The investigation was a big waste of time. Mueller tripped over his dick by not coming to any conclusions at the release of it. In the end, he just laid the turd out there for all to see, and 90% of the people already have concluded what they want to conclude.

Yeah, I know, in the real world, any one of the hundreds of transgressions committed by this enormously incompetent administration would be good enough for impeachment trials, if not outright treason accusations, but this is the age of alternate facts, fake news, and a tweeting 12 year old retard as president.

Frankly, I’m at the point that I feel like the Dems have no chance to win this next election due to their own incompetence. The DNC really doesn’t mind the fiscally conservative lie that is the Republican platform. They love the tax breaks as much as any Republican.

The Dems will fight among themselves about how far left to go and trip over their collective dicks yet again. I mean really. Saying you will completely shitcan the insurance companies at the altar of a government-only run healthcare system is a bridge too far. Kamala saying only blacks deserve assistance to help to buy a house is another alienating platform being bandied about.

I’m sick to death of all this motherfucking shit. The country survived Reagan and clown-boy Bush II, but we may not come out from under Trump if he wins this next election. The Republican party has thrown its lot in with our infant-president and will follow him up to and over the point where he abolishes the 22nd amendment and installs himself as president for life.

And the blame falls squarely on turtle-man Mitch McConnell and his fucking toadie Paul Ryan.

I can’t watch the news anymore. I go from 0 to fully enraged in 3 seconds. I’ve never been anywhere near this disgusted with my country. Russia and China are racing by us in global and economic power. Putin is destabilizing our country while the president gleefully follows his lead. His brain-dead followers say shit like “Better Russian than Democrat!” Fuck this shit.

Wow. This kinda just flew out of me. Nevermind.

    • zumiee said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:11 am

I basically agree with a lot of that, but here’s something I don’t agree with:
“The investigation was a big waste of time.”
The investigation lays out in great detail what Russia did. We absolutely know all the ways Russia attacked the election. Amazing detective work was done. Lives in Russia were risked to get the information to us.
Sure, the traitor Trump spit all over it and spit all over our nation in general, but the report will damn Trump’s presidency as long as the nation exists. (Granted, if he’s re-elected, who knows how long that will be.)

      • unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:23 am

I think it became a waste of time because nothing will come of it. Nothing. If Mueller came out and said Trump obstructed the investigation 12 different ways and broke the law, then I’d be fine with it. But since he wouldn’t go that last step, then Trump can basically do anything in the eyes of his party, the DoJ, and the SCOTUS. Any resistance now will be met by Article 2, “I can do whatever I want!”

Yes, we know how the Russians did it. And Trump promptly dismantled the cyber-security team in charge of protecting elections. People risked their lives, and hundreds of good people in the FBI did their jobs well. So naturally, Trump supports Putin and throws his intelligence agencies under the bus. The Senate of course turns a blind eye to it. Trump is right, he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue, and Mitch McConnell would call him a hero and bury the body in his backyard.

      • zumiee said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:42 am

Ultimately the 2020 election is massively huge. The nation will either send the sociopath back to the rotten hole he crawled out of, or it will re-elect and embolden him.
This election cycle will be extremely intense and ugly. There are Trump supporters who’ve waited their whole lives for a president like Trump, and they’re going to tenaciously try to hang onto power.
The sadly funny thing is: once Trump finally leaves office, the GOP will try to pretend he never existed. He’ll join Dick Cheney on the list of discarded outcasts.

      • unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 12:23 pm

What the RNC did to McCain was hideous back in 2000. I lost a ton of respect for him when he went crawling back to them in 2008.

To be honest, I don’t even know how Trump supporters can even do it. I have some relatives who support him, and when they get going on about him I don’t even recognize them. It seems like a cult to me. The religion of Trumpism.
I’m very grateful to historian Jon Meacham for his book “The Soul of America.” He wrote the book to help people put our present times in historical perspective, and encourage people that the nation has gotten through dark times before. Very good, interesting, and insightful book.

  19. unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:30 am

We may not come out of this, I’m afraid. The slow-moving coup is gaining footholds every few weeks as trump dismantles safeguards around the environment, around health, and social services. No oversight of this upcoming election is so comforting. Citizens United, legalized gerrymandering, the DoJ and Supreme Court in his pocket, he’s very close to being able to install himself as Pres for life.

And the evangelicals line up behind him like the lemmings they are. If there ever was a man who should be scorned by anyone who is remotely religious, it’s Trump. But no.

If all this comes to pass, what then?

    • zumiee said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:53 am

We can only do what we can. The votes are there to defeat him in 2020 if the non-Trumpers unite behind the Dem candidate. That didn’t happen in ‘16. Many butt-hurt Bernie supporters didn’t vote for Hillary. Insanely short-sighted, in my opinion.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 24, 2019 at 11:55 am

My daughters were both of a mind that Bernie got screwed by the DNC (which he did) and instead voted for comrade Jill Stein. I said you are voting for Trump. They didn’t listen despite my pleadings. And of course they regret it. A LOT of young voters felt the same way.

    • djloo27 said, on July 24, 2019 at 5:29 pm

      Absolutely, Kat.
So now the consensus is that Bum is staying?
Are the next few games really going to change minds either way?

      • Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 6:52 pm

there seems to be some concern about what the players would think if Bum is traded. Zaidi can weather the facebook housewives no problem but he does have to be careful with how the players view that trade.

Didn’t see or hear it, but Beede came back to earth some. You’re going to get that inconsistency with young pitchers. He’s got enough good stuff to hang in there with him through the end of the season, then evaluate…

no i could easily see them trading Smith, he’s pretty replaceable—at least if you compare him to Bum who is hard to replace both in the rotation and spiritually. If Z gets a nice haul for Smith I’m ok with keeping Bum assuming he didn’t turn down anything good.

  45. Flavor said, on July 24, 2019 at 7:44 pm

they can keep the dream alive and still trade players. Paul said it earlier, Z doesn’t have to be a buyer or a seller, he can be a trader. I’m ok with that approach. As long as Z is getting value with who he is trading I’m not going to freak out if he doesn’t trade everyone.

  46. alleykat69 said, on July 24, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Yeah I can see Smith moving for the right deal. But they have to keep Watson cause their going to need to keep a lefty in the pen besides that other guy.
Dyson has like 60 saves in his career so I’ll assume Boch will go with him and sometimes Watson in certain matchups.Moronta not sure if Boch will move him to closer, probably keep him in his role in the 7-8 spot..
