Rest Today Then Win More
After all these extra inning games and emotional rollercoasters, this team could use a day off. This upcoming roadie looks nasty but I also thought that about the last one and they went 7-1.
How long has Encarnacion been doing this “parrot” home run trot? Seems like he’s ripping off our own one flap down himself. I understand the arm is in a different angle but is he the first player to bust out a “one flap down” like trot since the great Jeffrey Leonard?
Good day to move Will Smith to keep us interested on a byr day but probably waiting for more desperation from other teams better strategy…
I feel like every win or loss in the coming days will factor big in what they do.
Lost ground to everyone yesterday I think.
Can’t afford many of those in the leap frog game…
My cousin somehow hooked up tickets for the promotion at the yard yesterday and invited me last minute so I made my way up hoping for the sweep. Some of you locals may have heard about the Supercuts promotion. Well, turns out my cousin was on Mac’s team and got to hit on the field prior to the game. He got 8 balls pitched to him and hit 2 out of the infield. All in all he pretty much brought shame on the family. Mac’s team ended up losing but scored 420 which was appropriate, I guess. Our big take away was that Joe Panik probably gets his hair cut at SuperCuts and that’s a big part of his problem(s).
With the Giants having already taken the series the game had a house money vibe. With 14 LOB they had their opportunities and couldn’t cash in which is sort of understandable with tomorrow being the off day after such a dramatic home-stand. It was nice to see the team playing with some energy at least. We caught a lot of the post game as we headed down the peninsula and I’d say for this club to compete down the stretch they need another starter, a legit second baseman and an outfielder. I just don’t have a lot of confidence in Beede until he puts together some consistent outings. Cueto returning possibly fills one of those needs but as has been mentioned here that’s a real crap shoot. If anyone can pull that off its Cueto imo. Anyway, if Zaidi can somehow cobble together 2 of those 3 who knows what happens.
wow very cool Dirt. Pct of Cubs fans in attendance? I know there are lot of transplants; see Cubs gear everywhere especially since they finally won one.
I think Z will have to wait to address 2b OF and hopefully 1b til next year but yeah upgrades needed.
It was a good size crowd and mostly Giants fans from what I could tell. Maybe a 70/30 split.
Yes SF got out bombed and lost yesterday. they got out bombed game 1 and won.
Yesterday there were 5 shutouts pitched including 1 hitter by Tribe. Tribe btw have second best pitching in AL, are 14-4 in July and ML best 30-12 since June 4.
Was pitching held Rox to 2 runs in 2 games and swept DH.
I think Loo is right Pom might be settling into set up role; that would allow them to dump Smith/Watson. Just me but neither is bringing back “build the foundation” type of multiple prospects for couple months rental. Same argument re: Bum. SF lucky to get one real keeper imo. Instead they likely wind up with Shaw/Solano types, not future stars. This is more longshot to me than Giants getting in playoffs. They are couple back with 60 to play and they’ve beaten Cards Brewers and now Cubs head up. They’ve shown they can hang with big boys.
I think their moving Smith for sure,Zman has a new shiny toy he wants to bring up (I’m hoping)in the 2nd half in a Lefty reliever named Sam Selman who’s lighting it up in Sacramento 63 K’s in 38 innings era 1.42 whip .078.Played ball with Yaz at Vanderbilt, who says his stuff fastball/slider is nasty..
Is he pushing 30 like Yaz?
He’ll be 29 in November.
He’s all of 16 months younger than TFL…
Some guys bloom late like Yaz, but he seems to have gotten his shit together now.
wink wink nudge nudge
Pads are 6-12 in July (-26 run dif)f and have lost 7 of last 10 even with W yesterday. They hit lot of bombs, 5th in NL, but don’t score lot of runs where they are 14th. Problem is simply getting OB and hits where they sit 13th. They have 3 guys in LU with 25 bombs (Machado Renfroe Reyes) but couple black holes C 2b and CF isn’t good either.
They brought the Urias kid back after early struggles and after 0-4 yesterday he’s 3-37. The C Hedges another one of their top prospects is under Mendoza line at .194 after over 200 ABs. The other kid C Mejia isn’t much better hitter either.
Their mostly all prospect pitchers rank 10th in NL for ERA as team–one really good one (Paddack) most of the rest 4.00+ guys. They are really young/lot of potential…and currently 5 games under .500. Really hope Giants roll them again and keep them there near bottom of division.
It was cool to see Leonard, Royce Clayton and my man Mitch on the tube during this series, I don’t remember which game and I didn’t catch why they were there, but it sure was cool.
There was a African-American heritage day at the ballpark.
Looking forward to Alaskan Alcoholic Transvestite Senior Citizen Day.
Important to celebrate every fuckin’ thing on Earth…
That’s Inuit to you, pal. And I’ll be there in all my glory.
Unless you have one of those big important meetings.
What’s up with that?
Leave that shit for the little computer kids.
You should be getting drunk and playing stickball…
DIRT! That is awesome, having heard about this contest on the radio I have a few questions: I was only listening halfway but it sounded like to get on a Murph or Mac team you had to send in some type of resume and then they do a draft. Is that how your cousin got on a team? What did the guys look like—were they all a bunch of beefcakes from Twin Creeks? How many guys actually knocked a ball over the wall????
Fun long read on F/G about deadline deals. They have Bum and Dyson going to Twins for pitching prospect and LH power OF rated in top 100 (#29) by them. Smith goes to LA (yikes!) for “…without a headliner in return, but (gaining) 2 or 3 intriguing prospects” which Z would have knowledge of at least.
Very cool, Micah. Yeah, too bad they didn’t bring home the sweep. I almost bailed on work and walked down there, but too many meetings.
Were they throwing BP speed? Slower? Man, I haven’t picked up a bat in around 8 years. Even to play softball. Batting cages? Prolly 12 years, when my son was in little league. I’d hate to think how I’d do out there.
As far as Smith goes, they should get a very high AAA, or something resembling a solid starter. Pref a 2nd baseman. Panik is doing nothing. Trading a top-line closer for less is a bad deal. Watson should bring something in the way of a high AA guy, if not more.
So one loss and we’re selling everyone again?
The Cardinals are winning again, so . . .
Flav/Chuck,
It was a pretty fun event. Mac does promos for the Saramonte Ford dealership and they hook him up with car leases so my cousin sees him pretty regularly but he said he just entered and his name was drawn. When he first showed up Mac recognized him so who knows what shenanigans took place – he’s a big kid (6’3″+) and you’d want him hitting for your team if you were picking. From what I could tell the pitcher was some random clubhouse guy and he was grooving pitches but his location left something to be desired. My cousin played through HS and is a pretty good hitter but was complaining about pitches being too far outside but whatever – excuses for his failure to execute as far as I’m concerned.
The hitting groups overall were basically a bunch of schlubs with 1-2 guys that could actually hit mixed in. One guy was a HS or JC coach and put one out into that out-shoot in right center (6th archway?). Since it was a SuperCuts promotion they offered haircuts afterwards which was sort of hilarious. My cousin was having none of it, picked up some schwag and split.
that’s awesome. I would totally do this but time is a tickin’ I should probably get in next year or risk bringing shame to my family as your cousin did to his…..
Well, we are back on the road, where I think we have the best record in the majors. I’d like to see a little 4-1 run before the deadline. Regardless of what happens, I think we trade Smith and/or Watson and tie someone like Smargle/Melonhead to it.
I’m thinking Bummie stays and there’s some kind of back-channel agreement with Bummie about the next deal.
Irregardless of any trades, the bigger problem with this team is Posey, Melancon, Smargle, Belt, and Crawford and their onerous contracts. I think getting rid of the contracts and thus the black hole logjam they create in the lineup is a bigger issue than trading for prospects.
I’m okay with what Melancon has brought so far this year and Samardzija has been okay so other than Belt I agree on the rest. Belt has been good over the last month – just need him to go on HR binge to supply some power. If Green can show enough maybe he allows Zaidi to explore moving Belt but between the salary and being a stat filler that Zaidi seems to like I don’t know.
When does Longoria get back?
After Belt’s hot start he’s pretty much flat-lined. This was (yet again) supposed to be the year he put everything together. And it’s not like he’s carrying the weight of the team. 36 RBIs through July is not nearly enough.
He’s turning into Posey. The defense isn’t enough.
Belt has sucked in July. One dinger and 5 RBIs. 5 home runs in April. 6 the rest of the season.
11 walks, 21 k’s.
His line: .277 .362 .337 .699
Longoria ‘may be activated’ on this road trip.
Longo and Cueto are part of the contract thing, but there’s some hope they can get back on the field and at least not be utter shit like the others have been.
I took a break from the Lexi videos, they’ve really improved. Lots more depth to them, take a look
wow. mind bending dumb. How a guy from Texas wound up with the leftcoast nut job is beyond me.
You know I was reading restaurant review done by two Chron millennials, and for each drink and some of the courses they are taking selfies, including as they leave in front of mirror background. Must be what matters in their Instagram follow me lives.
Wow! Aisles and aisles of food! Are you that surprised at the concept of a grocery store?
I nearly scooped my eyes out with spoon, but thankfully this was short.
she so dumb, and, frankly, not hot enough to make up for her dumbness.
Belt has mostly been in the leadoff spot or cleanup. Granted his lack of power is an issue but it’s a stretch to throw him in with the under-performers like Posey, Crawford and Panik (who sucks) when he leads the team in OBP, walks and runs scored.
Lead off is fairly new. He seems to have lost all power. And regardless he should have more that 5 RBIs this month.
yes. He had 8 HRs first 2 months, and he’s hit 3 since in 160 ABs. For all the complaints about posey’s lost power, Belt’s slugging pct, is .10 higher, .401 to .391. they each get an XBH about once every 11 ABs. And he’s still awful at home after all these years, hitting .203 with .656 OPS at the O.
I just expected more out of him than a .240 hitter. This isn’t about his $$$ just want him to do more at the plate.
I don’t care if Belt’s power is gone as long as he keeps getting on base. He’s finally found a spot in the LU I can tolerate him.
Oh boy, MORE watching pitches go by?
ust saw the Encarnacion thing. Is he trying to be Cap’t Morgan?
Belt could just as easily go on an HR binge and slam 6-8. Considering that August has typically been his best month of the season I wouldn’t be surprised to see it.
Another interesting thing about the team’s recent surge is the emergence of MadBum as *the guy* the team seems to be rallying around. As in, there would be a revolt among the players if Bum is traded. Even though the team has no *captain*, I always considered Buster to be the de facto captain. But I have a hard time imagining the team rallying around Posey if he was the one rumored to be traded. If Bum stays, and I think he will be staying, it seems like this has truly become his team. Hard to find a harder worker or inspirational red-ass to fill that role…
Francesa says there is now “no chance” of Bumgarner being traded.
When Francesa says “no chance” he’s very often wrong.
Then he’ll lie about ever saying it and hang up on whoever calls him on it…
I watch a lot of clips of that guy that get posted on twitter and they are literally exactly as you just described lol
I’ve never really seen Posey as a leader of the club outside of his play on the field. Mostly because he’s just a subdued guy who doesn’t put himself out there and is too aware/controlling of his portrayal in the media. A local beat guy, want to say it was Baggs, recently said the leaders on the club right now are Bumgarner, Vogt & Sandoval.
Vogt impressed the fuck out of me during his in game interview last week.
Definitely a leader…
Nothing earthshaking..Dodger’s pick up recently DFA Tyler White 1B Astros for literally a Scrub RHP named Andre Scrubb!!
I can’t see keeping Bumgarner but still trading TFL.
AHOFO?!
Eh, we can still aim pretty fuckin’ high with Smith traded for a blue chip prospect. Giants bullpen is in great shape, they can withstand the exit of TFLR
BTW, “TFL” is just a nickname for TFLR…
i figured. I thought you just got lazy typing the whole nickname out LOL
APFHOFO!
Hundley, another one of our former great leaders, just got DF’A by the A’s
Zummie and Chuck, I read with interest your posts yesterday regarding Mueller’s talk. Like you and about half the country, I hoped Mueller would fire a 1000 pound torpedo into HMS Trump. But, we shouldn’t expect as much as that. We are going to have to work to get his ass out of office and into jail. But, even if he loses the election and doesn’t declare martial law, he will resign and Pence will then pardon him and the family.
But…at least Trump can’t say no obstruction, etc. without major pushback.
My guess is now the demos will fill the airways with hearings, and if interest picks up they will vote for Impeachment inquiry. Won’t get past the Senate, but put McConnell on a poster with trump going into the election.
Zman is sure in the driver’s seat the next few days. Almost as interesting as the Giants’ progress will be what he does.
I’m sorry, but I am still finding this to be increasingly annoying with all the media prognosticators trying to figure out if the Giants are sellers or buyers. It’s just a team looking at all possibilities of trades to improve the team both short- and long-term. Just because they might keep Bum doesn’t make them buyers, and just because they might trade Smith doesn’t make them sellers. Ah well, it’s always just the little things that annoy me. Like watching a golf tournament and the announcer says “What a great golf shot!”. Really? It was *golf* shot? No shit, Sherlock…
i put literally zero stock in anything a local scribe or a natty guy says about what may or may not happen, who is talking to who, etc. Sports media has shifted from getting the scoop to getting the clicks. I lol at some of these guys who literally tweet out conflicting rumors within minutes of each other just so they can have their bases covered when something does happen and they can point to the one tweet they got right (ignoring the others that were way off)
Paul, I think the terms buyer & seller in this case implies the intent to trade established vets/stars for prospects/young guys depending on where you are in the standings. The traditional trades that we grew up with are much harder to pull off nowadays…
^Possibly deserving of a “No shit, Sherlock”…
I like Matt Boyd a lot, big K guy, I’d totally support a move like this.
Just read that , I like that as well as long as he doesn’t turn into the other Matt we did that for Matt Moore..
Hey I wonder if we could get Nick Constelleous ( sp for sure wrong) RH bat 3B/OF for both Smith&Moronta..that would be sweet…
Sure, that would be a great pick up too. RH power. We’d have to give up a lot to get both of them, tho
Giants “high-level” scout in Detroit:
Tulowitski retired. I feel old.
What does Willie Mays at 88 do to ya?
Bob Costas is literally so played out and awful to listen to, he’s the worst baseball announcer out there right now, IMO. SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT ALL YOUR STUPID MINUTIA BULLSHIT!!!!!!
One of the most painful things about Costas is that he thinks he’s funny. He cracks a lame joke then pauses to wait for the people at home to laugh.
(Spoiler alert: they’re not laughing.)
That kid is the highest level of Dork scout I’ve ever seen..”He eats eagle scouts for breakfast”!
I think Z will trade to buy and trade to sell. Smith should be gone, but pieces that help long term are in. If this guy is a smart as they say lets not buy or sell, lets trade to get fucking BETTER. SOOO sick of being a 2nd div team compared to LA!
Re: S Shell’s 3:07
Book this.
Trumpf will pardon HIMSELF and family before he leaves office. That is, if he doesn’t declare martial law and have the Congress and SCOTUS arrested. He would not leave something as critical as a pardon up to friggin’ Pence. Drumpf tolerates Pence like a dirty shag rug to wipe his feet.
New York should have an arrest warrant ready to execute for tax fraud at 12:01 pm Jan 20, 2021 as Drumpf leaves the Capitol, and before he jets out of the country, which is not farfetched, IMO.
Assuming this country does not re-elect this disaster, which is not at all a given…
Serious question here.
All this pre-deadline talk of trades always has the “scouts for [insert any team] were seen at X Stadium looking at Joe Hitzalot”.
All teams looking for talent surely must know most of the players in the league, and probably have watched or scouted a ton of ’em for a long time. At the last minute, what is this “scout” looking for that the team doesn’t already know from video, previous scout reports, and other sources? Is the scout there to make sure Joe looks healthy, doesn’t have a bad haircut, or what?…
it’s probably like seeing a house on the market. Now any buyer has seen every video/drone/pic of the house and you don’t really need a realtor anymore to help you find a house. But you still want to walk through it and see it and feel it with your own eyes. That’s what that scout was doing.
could just be confirmation/refutation of what reports from others might have said. Does fastball still have life, breaking pitches sharp, level of control yada yada. How a guy looks defensively for range and arm strength, how he looks vs. same handed pitching, how pitchers are getting him out. Scouts don’t always agree, even on prospects. Stros had their draft meetings with combo of analytics guys and minor/college scouts.
Remember reading about Noland Smith who was playing college ball at Tennessee St and Chiefs sent a scout to watch him. Problem was they had his name wrong and asked about Norland Smith (his brother), who as it turns out, was playing in the band.
Flav mentioned how much power Giants bats have brought during the winning streak. We’ve seen LHs like Dick Sando and Yaz knock HRs out of the O to LF. why can’t Belt do that, even to RF? He’s got 1 HR this entire month in 80 ABs. Slugging pct has dropped every single month from high of.495 April to .337 July.
Are they only pitching to him with unjuiced balls? His OB remains steady at career average it’s the lack of slugging that is driving down his OPS.
Maybe his knee is worse than he’s letting on?
I think its the knee.
I don’t even know which one it is, though. If it’s the left knee, that’s the drive leg, which would seem the one a LHer relies on for some power…
Those fly outs to left field seem like mostly upper-body swings.
Padres only have the 1st game starter announced, Joey Luchesi LHP..
So give Belt a day off and start Austin and Green at 3rd for Panda..
Bochy wanted to do that Sunday but Maddon scratched Lester and that all blew up in their face..
Pads got shut out 4-0 by DeGrom and Mets today on 6 hits, of which Machado had 3 by himself. Their kid 2b Urias went 0-3. He’s 1-16 since being called back up jul 20 and hitting .075 (3 for 40) on the season taking over for Kinsler (who sucks as bad as Panik)..
Pads have lost 9 of last 12. Let them wake up next week.
