Inaction
The man with the black shoes kicks off this roadie. I, too, am hitting the road–driving up to Black Butte today.
A quick check of the rumors is yielding nothing.
Unless Zaidi pulls a rabbit out of the hat I see us sitting this one out.
And that sucks.
one of stumbling blocks seems to be years of control. Since Bum and Smith are pure 2 month rentals that factors into value, apparently. Watson has gotten more expensive though I would guess he is the one that gets moved somewhere. But he isn’t bringing back Panik’s ML ready replacement or Belt’s for next season.
Z was always in tough spot re: Bum. I’m sure this was gone over as he was being hired. It would have been suicidal for him to take over and immediately trade him off though I’ve always thought that would have been best time to do it.. Plan I think was hey play it by ear and listen to those who might show interest—if he sucked they let him leave or took what they could get, if not then see what market could bring. In end he wasn’t good enough to attract the type of talent Giants wanted back.
Prop votes for Pawlie winning it all!
Jeez the kid went to Del Mar? I’m 5 minute drive from there and hit b-ball tourney there every Holiday. It’s also block away from Sam’s BBQ, great food.
re: “that sucks” :: Do you still trust Z did the right thing? Who should he have traded away regardless of whether he thought he was getting fair value in prospects? Would you have taken back a bad contract in exchange for letting go of one, like how LA did with Homer Bailey whom they immediately released in Kemp and Puig deal?
Sabes did it with Matt Williams. That being said, I just don’t think they are getting what for Bum. And the Yanks pitching has been abysmal lately. I thought Dyson/Watson would be worth something as well, bt there’s no reason to get lowballed for the sake of moving pieces.
Just in general, I think the new trade deadline is bullshit and dollars to donuts, no MLB team likes it. Why? Because the old August 15th date allowed more teams to determine if they were sellers or buyers. Right now the situation is messed up because too many teams are on the proverbial fence. I suspect it will get changed back to the old way next season.
So, here’s the deal with our team (and like Flav, Snarkk and a few others have said, I’m hoping I’m wrong about this direction) – essentially, Zaidi will calculate that the players have earned the right to “play out this hand,” as well as giving Boch a shot in the playoffs one more time before he begins his new career as a fisherman. Oh, and no, Zaidi wont make a big move as a buyer either . . . the big move is allowing the veterans to play out the string. Again, I hope I am wrong, but regardless, I trust Zaidi to do what’s best and will support him either way.
Great post, Blade.
Z, driven mad by
the unsolvable riddle:
To buy, or to sell….
“In end he wasn’t good enough to attract the type of talent Giants wanted back.”
Willie, you’re spot on about Madbum . . . Last 4 starts, he is trending down again (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 earned runs). In fact, this guy Miller of ESPN said it best by using the Yankees pitching staff as an example about whether they would be a buyer for a starter:
“Miller: I doubt it. Put it this way: If James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka or Domingo German were on this trade market, they’d be at least as in-demand as Robbie Ray, Bumgarner or Stroman.”
Latest rumor: Clint Frazier for Robbie Ray.
If that goes down and Bum stays and this team misses WCII, that will be really a bummer …
Can totally see that deal happening…
Teams value prospects more now imo because the HS and college players are already polished with all the national tournaments, and more physically fit now too. Get to the majors quicker so the time value of a top prospect is better. Waiting 2-3 years vs 5-7 changes things..
well it’s also the money paid to prospects and years of control and arb vs. vets. I think what happened went something like this.
Z’s counterpart calls asking about top pitching. Z has his prospect list out and says, ” OK we want A B or C. ”
Other team says well we were thinking more 3 guys further down the list and tossing in one even further.
Z says then you’re talking about Melancon Gott yada yada.
They say OK we’ll get back to you.
end of story.
Cody Bellinger, 6.8 WAR player and MVP candidate, makes $605 K this season.
By contrast LA owes A J Pollock $55 mil for the next 4.
Keeping the team together and going for it regardless of how slim their chances are is the 100% right thing to do unless they are blown away by a trade offer. Planning ahead for anything is smart – but very often futile.
“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there “is” such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

Not sure if this makes or refutes my point…
Bum’s agent should be knocking down the Giants door asking for a trade. If Bum stays and the Giants make him a QO, which he will likely decline he may find himself jobless like Keuchel this past offseason. Teams don’t want to lose draft picks by signing guys who rejected QO’s. His best bet is to be signed as an unrestricted free agent, which is what he becomes once he is traded.
At least I think that is correct. Chime in, if I am not looking at this correctly.
yes once he’s traded he can’t be offered QO. I would hope he and Giants can work out something amenable to both sides, for 2-3 years.
Loo, that’s exactly what several of us have been saying. Unless they come up with worthwhile talent then Bum stays home. I give them less than 50-50 to make the second WC, but surge demands they take a chance. A lineup improvement minus Bum still gives them a chance. Bum for 2-3 AA players forget it!
Right, Seal.
Giant management owes it to the fans that have suffered since 2014!
Anytime you have a chance, you gotta go for it…
I like this matchup tonight.Drew Smyly is downright horrible,Black Shoes Beede has pitched well this month going for his 3rd win of the month.I can see the Giants hammering Smyly as they keep their stellar play on the road to continue and increase their road record to 30-24!!
The Giants are 18-5 in July, that’s almost .800 ball for the month. Their run differential for July is plus 44.
The only trade that would make sense is Pomeranz for a bench guy (Tyler Austin is pretty much played out IMO) and even that doesn’t need to happen. Bring up Shaw or Gerber if needed for some extra pop.
I’d rather be wrong by taking the chance of winning, than to trade away my chances and always wonder if the team could have pulled it off.
Good to see Blade posting!
That old vid of early Candlestick is cool. Before my time, but it cracks me up as that era of Candlestick reminds me of Coors Field with those trees out beyond centerfield fence. I don’t usually associate pretty trees with Candlestick or its surrounding neighborhood.
I like that they no longer have 2 trade deadlines, but maybe they need to move this one back to August 15 starting next year. Either way, I think we are in a new era now where deadline deals aren’t going to be as sexy and common as they once were.
Fired up for tonight’s game. My wanderings are done, my visitors have left, and I can totally focus on a game tonight for the first time in weeks. And it’s a BSB start—to top it all off!
What vid?
Since the most they can get for Pomeranz is a cheap bottle of wine from the bottom shelf at a grocery store, I would agree with Bozo and just dump Austin who’s just a novelty they can’t afford to keep. They definitely need to add outfield depth, (with Dick’s back,Pillar’s overuse etc)rather it’s bringing back Duggar the easy choice are possibly getting an outfielder for Smith.Heard they have some interest in Angels outfielder Brian Goodwin that would be a nice fit.
Game of the year so far is tonight! Win and we are in for the ride. Lose (badly) and Zman could pull a trigger. Last game that counts before the trade deadline (5 pm EST??).
OSF
Root them home, guys. I’ll be watching the debates. Fate of the nation slight priority over Giants circa 2019. Small difference but still there.
“Make America Proud Again”.
OSF
Make America America again.
I’d like to make America Canada…
I completely disagree:)
Seal:
Why do you want to watch 10 nonsensical dumbells talk over each other for hours?
You can do that right here…
hey now
Ahh, found it, Dawg. That ain’t the Stick. There was never a hill behind CF. Beyond that StL is wearing their home unis.
On 2nd thought, maybe that is? We are wearing our cream jerseys. And we are listed as the home team on the scoreboard (doh!). I don’t remember CF looking like that.
It is the ‘stick Chuck . . . Go to Flagstaff site and they have other video (different games, but same park). What’s weird is that some of the players aren’t wearing sleeve patches and some are.
At this point I’d settle for Panik being DFA.
Tumbleweeds on the relievers but think there will be dominoes falling tomorrow.
Yeah, Dirt, I don’t know that Panik would be released, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the only move the team makes is for a better 2nd bagger….
Probably right but he’s a vortex of suckitude. I’m not going to look it up but wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the worst hitter in MLB this season. Assuming Zaidi deals from an area of strength (BP) most moves will require reshuffling the 40 man to somehow back fill with minor league arms. Who else is the odd man out?
Yes, Panik needs to be replaced. Obviously, at some point over the next year or two, the whole infield has to be replaced. Maybe will start right now with 2nd base.
Will Smith for the Brewers 2nd base prospect.
Brewers Dubon are Hiura would excellent at 2B doubt they let either go though,Smith would not be enough imo..
In addition to Dubon, MLB site also mentions Orioles’ Jonathan Villar and A’s Jorge Mateo. Don’t know much about them… but also don’t know much about geography… and don’t know much about geometry…
Shit, Solano is better than Panik. Just flip Panik to the bench.
Astros supposedly trying to pry Bumgarner away…
You can’t hide… your pryin’ eyes…
If you read enough shit on the web, everyone is either about to be traded to 4 different teams or completely unavailable. Major waste of time…
Yes it is, but I got nuthin’ else to do, nursing my bruised ribs in 110 degree Phoenix……
Ouch but it’s a dry heat right?☠️🌞🔥
Yep, it’s dry except for the sweat it still generates…
Not that it matters, but just found out that one of the victims of the Gilroy shooting was a recent graduate (meaning, whole life ahead of him, etc.) of Keuka College in upstate NY, of which I’m an adjunct professor teaching in the Keuka program in China and Vietnam. Bloody hell, literally. The shooter who bought the gun legally in Nevada wouldn’t even be able to buy beer or rent a car. Sorry, I’m just a bit numb about some things so stupid in the USofA….
And we have to hope that the Russians haven’t figured out how to hack into the election voting machines, because Moscow Mitch keeps blocking the U.S. from doing anything about it. The Russians tried to hack into the machines in ‘16, but apparently it was the one phase of their attack on the election that wasn’t successful. Now they’ve had several years to hone their craft on that.
If they can, why shouldn’t they?
Think we’re above it back here?
Election fraud in the U.S. is actually very rare these days. There are obstacles put up by unethical Republicans to make it harder for people in poverty to get to polling places, but actual voting fraud is rare. Trump set up a commission to look for voter fraud, and then later quietly disbanded the commission because it wasn’t finding anything.
Russians attacking our elections should be taken extremely seriously, but our president is a Russian asset, so here we are. And the Senate leader is onboard with subservience to Putin, too.
Sad and scary. Ronald Reagan would be speechless.
Ron, here’s your party’s political leaders. A bunch of Russian assets.
Not what I meant, Zum.
I was referring to stuff like this (if it’s true)…

Dumb play by Pillar, no chance at 3rd
Wheels are falling off..
Gotta send our Austins back to Texas…
Just rolled into Black Butte and checked the score. Drew Smiley? This is embarrassing. The run of success is over. I pray there’s still time for Zaidi to work his magic.
Beede was throwing some meatballs.
Really surprised with a day off to boot, how sluggish they look against a pitcher that normally stinks 😷..
Belt finally does something
Belt finally got a hold of one.
Well there’s a pulse in Belt afterwards!
and Vogt, gets into the act.
Vogt launch!!
Vogt or die!
My dvr be laggin
Melancon comes through again. He’s really had a nice year.
Beede didn’t rock the black shoes tonight—super disappointing.
Yes Melon has niggled together a nice run of seedless outings.
Has he made him self tradeable?
Doubt it…
If you package him with Pomeranz you might get an empty package in return 📦
Not at $32 mill . . . or whatever the fuck we owe him
I love that you are now using the word “niggled”. Michael Wrona uses it in his race calls when he says a jockey is “niggling” away on his 🐎. I started using it too. Now that makes 3 of us.
I did it for you, Flavor, although I think Wrona might be the only one using it correctly…
Damn. Get em tomorrow.
Melancon has gotten his ERA down to 3.50. He’s found a niche in mostly low pressure situations, for his $12 million a season.
Looks like OSF made the right call watching the debate.
The human missile crisis to Cleve? Are they trying to shitcan their chances?
All these guys in baseball media reporting trade rumors — Kurkjian, Rosenthal, Morosi, etc.– they or somebody must be making money reporting this stuff, right? Because none of it comes to fruition, its all just S thrown against the wall. “Sources” and “reported interest” could just as well be made up by these dudes. Who predicted Bauer to the Reds and Stroman to the Mets, and Puig to Cleveland? I’ll guess nobody…
Watched some highlights on MLB.
Got two homers anyway. Belt’s HR would have been an out at Oracle, most likely. Lovin’ Vogt, and that’s unusual for me and an ex A’s guy.
What’s with Slater — the guy has for some time now been misplaying chances in RF that he should handle. Tonight, he’s loping over to his right to cut off a long single and suddenly just lets the chest high bounce get by him. The dude is playing himself out of a roster spot, get it together out there…
Heard on radio weather report not one day this month has SF had a day higher than 75.
so Belt goes to 90 degree and humid Philly, just like where he grew up in Texas, and blasts a HR. Pls do him a favor and get him out of Dodge. Any team in Midwest or East coast hot summer he hits 25 bombs, plays good D and gets his walks. $$$ won’t be an issue, fans will love the guy. He just needs to get out of SF.
just watched clips of the Reds/Pirates brawl. Garrett went into that ready to fight. That’s where guys like Puig and Bum fall short. They talk shit but never do anything. Bum is the worst at that. Even today, Puig only started fake fighting once he got held. But Garrett? He went into that like a man. I support that. If you’re gonna fight go fight don’t sit there chirping about it. Take your suspension like a man and at least you acted like one…….
Bell? He’s the manager, he can’t fall apart like that. Horrible look for him.
Bum invites opponents to come out to the mound, but they always decline the invitation.
kind of. He acts a lot like Puig in the sense that there is talk talk talk and then someone always gets in between them. Puig starts acting like a bigger idiot at that point so I’m not putting Bum in that category. But Garrett just said “Fck it” and there’s something refreshing about that.
What a strange trade. Bauer to the Reds? I don’t get it.
Tribe already have great pitching. They get Puig and the Padres Reyes (probably real prize of the entire deal) another power guy.
Bauer goes straight to obscurity.
Slightly fun fact:
Canseco also won a ring with the 2000 Yankees.
If Bum does go to Astros that would be very cool. I could pull for them no matter who they played.
Pirates Reds stuff is a trip. on mlb .com they have the older vid of Reds Dietrich hitting the HR and standing there watching it that pissed off Pirates back in April.
So what set Garrett off? Looked like harmless out where he covered 3-1 put out at 1b and then after he’s on the mound he charges the Pirates dugout by himself. ?
Apparently the Pirates dugout had been woofing all game, and was woofing at Garrett..
Votto had engaged the Pirates bench in an animated discussion earlier, between innings…
It shows it’s more than just Bum in MLB who is old school about batters standing there admiring their HRs.
Really a great trade for the Indians, they just added 50 HR’s to their LU and 106RBI’s for the stretch run.
Bauer to the Reds makes no sense, I’m wondering if their going to flip him tomorrow in another deal?
And San Diego? WTF they got hosed in this trade..
I don’t think so AK . . . Padres got a stud prospect in Trammel (forget about what he did in double AA this season . . . His approach is excellent and he should excel going forward). Even Keith Law is saying that the Padres were the big winner in this 3 team trade, despite not getting a MLB player. I mostly like Law’s takes on players.
well Pads gave up a young power hitter with years of control and only wind up with a prospect in return. Reyes is a big guy and probably a liability defensively but he can hit. I thought they were the ones after Bauer. Reds at least got an SP they desperately need to hang in that Division, at least for a season. Just surprised Pads didn’t get more out of the deal considering all the players involved.
Puig had already been traded away when he went on the brawl with the Reds, his ex team.
The imbroglio was basically done, he went back in to start some more, which he usually does in these things. What a tool.
I wouldn’t faint if the Giants cleaned house today – Bum included…
They’d be 3.5 behind Cards if they were in NL central where at least 1 and maybe both WCs come from, with 55 games left. They’ve lost 2 less games than Brewers total. Magic number is something like 54. They are serving notice for next year and giving Z a plan for offseason when he makes his next moves with new mgr coaching staff yada yada
