A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Win Day

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 18, 2019

It’s so great when we can get one of these young guys plugged in to secure a win. It makes the time between Bum starts pass quicker. Oh, lookie here, he’s pitching today! His nemesis is Merrill Kelly, same guy who pitched at The Flapalooza—the game that turned the season around and exposed me as a fool who can’t catch a baseball tossed right to him.

I will never forget that nor live it down.

So instead of the famous “Catch” does this go down in infamy as “The Flub” “Are Hands of Stone”?

  2. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 9:34 am

Logan Webb 80 game suspension was for testing positive for (and this is a shit full of letters)
    Dehydrochlormethyltestorstrone..

    • Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 10:01 am

that’s old school east German shit. Wow, Webb wasn’t fucking around

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 12:52 pm

At the time, the reports show he issued the usual WTF happened? denial, he had no knowledge, and it must be a mistake, he used a lot of legit supplements, etc. Bottom line: hard to fathom that kind of nasty old school stuff is going to suddenly show up in some supposedly legit “supplement” by accident…

A sweep would be nice! LA and Atl are in barring unforeseen collapse. That leaves 7 teams fighting for 3 spots, with win totals ranging as follows 66,65,64,64,64,63,63. Still hard to believe that SF is in that group. I was at the game where Bum got pummeled by the Dodgers in LA, and we nearly came back from a 9-2 deficit and lost 9-8.starting a week later vs Az we are 29-14 since. My friends and I thought what a shame it was that the last time we would see Mad Bum pitch for SF he was horrible. What a turnaround this year has been!

Hey I’d love to see J Davis up too but…score last night was 13-10 and game was in Reno a launching pad. Mike Gerber playing RF, who I don’t even recall as a hitter, hit his 25th bomb to go with 36 doubles and has an OPS way over 1.000. It’s hard to evaluate how this projects.. Aramis Garcia went 4 for 5 too. Menez gave up 6 runs in 6 innings and was in line for the W til pen (Adon and Okert our old buddy) gave up 7 in bottom 8th.

Meanwhile different scenario playing out for Richmond. Both Ramos and Bart had 0-fers in a 1-0 L. Ramos is hitting .194 there, Bart .192. Sure it’s pitcher’s league but these 2 still seem a ways away from ML ball.

    • willedav said, on August 18, 2019 at 10:29 am

I misread Gerber’s stats. Slash line at Sac: .316/.377/.593 so OPS is .971. 62 XBHs in 408 ABs, about 1 every 6.5 times up with 25 bombs, 1 per 16 ABs. He is on 40 man and went 1-15 in brief time up.

Last year he hit 34 hRs in AAA but low BA, .213.

      • Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 10:44 am

think Gerber is Diggity’s guy but might be wrong about that

    • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 12:16 pm

Good post WillieD, and I think your take on the PCL is accurate.

Plus, if you wanted to bring Davis up, who goes down? The Giants really do not have a spot.

I wonder what the long-term plan is for Duggar, or if there is a long-term plan. If he does not pan-out, that could be a potential in for J Davis.

  5. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 18, 2019 at 10:21 am

I’m still a bit in awe of our OFers collecting 10 hits last night. Maybe the Giants have done that more than I realize in recent months, but it seems like one of those hopeful upward trends we’ve been looking for this season.

  6. mrsprtdude said, on August 18, 2019 at 10:44 am

Seeing Bart and Ramos at below .200 means they are sucking. I know only been a short time in Richmond…but I bet none of the current crop of young amazing hitters that are popping up on every team but ours were hitting .192 in AA. Sigh

    • willedav said, on August 18, 2019 at 11:02 am

      mm small sample size but…
      Ramos is 6 for 31, 1 double 1 bomb 14 Ks.
Bart is 5 for 26, 1 bomb only XBH.

  7. willedav said, on August 18, 2019 at 11:07 am

Avelino up/Bergen DFA’d with Pablo out for who knows how long.

  8. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 11:58 am

    I’m upset 😡 it’s not Davis!
But I can see a need for a SS/3B? since I guess the Giants don’t think Solano can play 3rd.
Surprised on Bergen, I believe he is a rule 5 guy and would of had to stay with the club the whole year are go back to Toronto I think 🤔

  9. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 12:08 pm

Ok now I’m wrong, Solano to start at 3rd today, only his 4th time ever.!
    Longo’s foot is sore !
2 problems going forward the health of Longo&Dick not helping the club..

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:03 pm

      Plantar fasciitis is no bueno.
He’s had bouts of it before.
That’s a potential chronic off and on deal.
Another reason this contract is a stinker…

  10. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 12:35 pm

Webb has a nasty nasty split or change, whatever it is.
I haven’t seen one dive like that from a Giants pitcher since Timmy days.
One stint and a few highlights, I already have hopes for this kid that he’s the real deal.
His PEDs maybe was a reaction to having the TJ surgery at a young age; now that his arm’s back, hopefully that’s overwith, or he’s not so stupid again.
Heard on KNBR from this Joe Ritzo guy who is subbing for Kuip, that Cueto was looking good his first start last week for San Jose. Due to start this week for them in Modesto. If it goes well, he’ll do a start up at Raley, then see what happens – sounds like he’d be up to SF by end of month…

      boring. Shoulda been Davis.

      • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:01 pm

Would love to see what Davis can do, but they need an IFer (since no telling when Pablo returns) more than an OFer right now.

  13. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:06 pm

By cutting Bergen it actually makes room for the Giants to add Davis to the 40 man roster since this will leave them at 39! With a off day tomorrow and Friday they don’t need a 5th starter for awhile, they need Davis playing in Chicago starting Wednesday!
It will be just like when the Giants just got Kevin Mitchell, and his 1st game was in Chicago and his 1st AB was a HR..just sayin you can’t write a bette script…

    • Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:09 pm

didn’t he hit 2 that game?

      • alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:22 pm

        Yes I believe so..

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:05 pm

Yep, he hit 2 yesterday. I reported one last night, but he wasn’t done at that point…

  14. Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:08 pm

imagine being so bad that you actually had to pitch Ty Blach over and over. He got lit up again today, his ERA is over 12.00

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:04 pm

It didn’t take long for ZMan to realize he was AAAA at best, and dump him. SabEvans kept him around for 2 years…

  15. chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:17 pm

What a fricking bonehead play by Gennett to get doubled-up. I think he pulled some similar shenanigans the other night, too. SMH…

  16. blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:27 pm

That hurt. Nice try by Pillar though.

  17. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:27 pm

    Well that sucks..

  18. chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:30 pm

Damn. I thought Bum was going to work out of this 1st inning jam, unscathed.

  19. chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:34 pm

Kat – it looks like the 40 man is up to date and there is not a slot open for Davis (reflects the Avelino transaction). So, they would have to shuffle an OFer, and I just don’t see that happening with the way the guys up now are playing. Plus, as Willie mentioned earlier, the PCL is crazy now, and no guarantee that someone tearing it up there translates at the ML level.

  20. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:46 pm

Chi, I guess I’m confused since Bergen &Avelino were both on the 40 man and now Bergen gone, doesn’t that make it a 39 man roster?

  21. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:54 pm

And as I much as every Flapper here, have believed their turnaround was hugely contributed “To the Dick” I think we might have got the best we’re going to get out of him, due to his nagging injuries and now the ability to start much..
My Outfield for the Stretch run is:
    Yaz,Pillar,Slater,and Davis
Plus the added speed to cover, especially at Oracle is good to have..

  22. zumiee said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:59 pm

They can’t send Austin back, without destroying the guy mentally. He’s got a .400 OB%. Dick is actually the weak link in the outfield right now. They’re hoping Dick can catch fire again.
Davis for sure will be up in Sept., I would think.

    • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:05 pm

Yeah, I don’t expect to see Davis before Sept. call-ups, and this was alluded to on the pregame, too.

  23. Paul Kocak (@kocakwords) said, on August 18, 2019 at 1:59 pm

Bochy did acknowledge Jaylin Davis in his postgame remarks yesterday. He’s on the radar screen. Blinking. I’m sure I saw him at the game I attended in Rochester, but the only guy I remember was Rymer Liriano of the Mets. And Gregor Blanco. I ordered a copy of WORLD SERIOUS to give to the White Shark in 3D.

    • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:06 pm

Were you able to make that hand-off of “World Serious,” Pawlie?

      • pawliekokonuts said, on August 18, 2019 at 5:35 pm

Just ordered it; I will look for him after a game.

  24. zumiee said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:02 pm

Melancon got the save again vs. the Dodgers. That’s kind of humorous.

  25. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:07 pm

    Chi, your 1:34.
Davis was in the International League at AAA level for Minnie before trade. He was bombing in that league, and there are no cheapie HR parks in that league, unlike PCL. The guy looks to be the real deal in the power department…

    • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:20 pm

Thanks, Snarkk. I knew from where he came (acquired in the Dyson deal), but not familiar with the International league. But again, outside of Duggar, who would you move to make a spot for JDavis?

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:24 pm

Nobody makes sense to move for Davis unless the Dick goes back on IL. He should come up with the call ups. He wouldn’t be a pick for post-season roster anyway, with virtually no MLB experience…

  26. chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:09 pm

  31. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:38 pm

Nice nice AB by Solano for the knock…

  32. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:41 pm

  33. willedav said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:42 pm

Dick has only had 2 starts in last 3 weeks plus couple PH ABs. Giants ain’t giving up on this guy given what he did when he was rolling. I’m not denigrating Davis either he’s been fantastic. But the other 4 Giant OFs have hit ML pitching pretty well and Sept 1 is right around corner.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2019 at 2:48 pm

    Crawford = turtle

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:19 pm

Maybe he has done, but I can’t remember a really clutch RBI type AB by Crawford recently. Maybe heresy, but I wouldn’t miss him next season. Get a SS that is good defensively and 40 points better at bat than Craw and I’m there. Who misses Panik now? Nobody. Pretty much same deal with Crawford, as long as his replacement isn’t a butcher with the glove…

      • Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:21 pm

no, get rid of him. He’s another slow and weak player, no place for a guy like that in today’s game. And his defense isn’t THAT good.

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:29 pm

Solano can play short, maybe Dubon can.
Crawford seems to play now like he sounds on those Wells Fargo radio commercials — dull as a post…

      • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:46 pm

I agree, Craw needs to go. Only way is if the owners agree to eat salary. Or, if they can find a team that needs a “veteran/good glove,” and the Giants eat some salary.

Long-shot either way, as the team owes Craw 30 mil through the next two years. Another dead weight contract….

  43. Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:22 pm

they hit 23 home runs the last 2 games in Washington? Twenty motherfucking three? We need guys who can hit homeruns, not shortstops who make flashy plays now and again…..

  45. willedav said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:38 pm

Dunno if they can keep FA Gennett but he definitely has enough pop in the bat to make a difference.

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:46 pm

      Let’s hope.
If Longo is going to continue to be susceptible to plantar fasciitis episodes the rest of his contract, and that’s not beyond the realm of possibility, then 3b needs a viable alternative. Zaidi should get rid of him, too, even if it takes eating lots of that salary…

      • chipower9 said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:51 pm

And ya think the Crawford deal is bad. Team owes Longoria about 53 mil over the next three yearsl. 5 mil buyout in 2023. OUCH…

  46. Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:44 pm

  47. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:49 pm

  48. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:52 pm

You add a juiced ball to the August heat environment of east coast and midwest ballparks, and you’ve got home run derbies daily all over the place. No such thing as small ball anymore. The stolen base will turn into a thing of the past …

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 3:59 pm

  49. blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:04 pm

I cited Crawfish being near last in the league hitting/defense about 2 weeks ago per Fangraphs (maybe 28th).

Him and the rest of the core (plus Longo) need to be traded/DFAed or minimally, platooned next season. Posey – whether they call it this or not – is already being platooned.

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:08 pm

Posey is just a ghost at the plate. He bears no resemblance to what he once was. I hope Bart gets it going at AA, then in the AFL in the offseason, and comes into 2020 ready to make some offensive noise in the upper minors by summer. Normally catchers are tolerated with low averages because it’s considered a defensive position and offense from it is gravy; that’s fine other than when you’re paying $22 million for a defensive catcher…

  50. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:09 pm

Watson and Smith are on fumes. They need a real break…

    • blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:14 pm

Both have been overused, especially Smith. You don’t win all those 1 run games and extra innings games and not pay a price.

      The bill is due.

  51. Flavor said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:09 pm

    Wtf has happened to Watson?

  52. snarkk said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:17 pm

Headin’ out, it’s very tough to sweep any series, let alone a 4 gamer.
Ritzo the SF radio announcer in middle 7th, says we’ll keep it here for the “traditional” singing of God Bless America. There is nothing traditional about it. It started as a reaction to Sept 11, back in 2001, and hasn’t been stopped. Traditional was the singing in the 7th inning stretch of “Take me out to the ballgame”, which makes much more sense and doesn’t get into mixing religion and nationalism with baseball…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 18, 2019 at 4:34 pm

  57. Macdog said, on August 18, 2019 at 5:13 pm

I knew after three games of Belt tearing it up in AZ, Bochy would move him up in the order. Ahead of Pillar (who was 0-4) and Slater. Not to blame this one on Belt (0-3, walk); MadBum especially was crap early and put them in a 3-0 hole. But Belt, Craw and Posey need to take up permanent residence in the bottom of the order whenever they’re in the lineup.

    • blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2019 at 5:27 pm

“But Belt, Craw and Posey need to take up permanent residence in the bottom of the order whenever they’re in the lineup.”

Absolutely . . . I just don’t get this deference to “has beens.” Meanwhile, players that are “bringing it,” get little or no respect, e.g., Solano.

      • blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2019 at 5:37 pm

I mean it’s beyond ridiculous that Posey is batting 3rd and Solano is being wasted at 8th.

Baseball is sort of being ruined. I don’t say that as an old scold. No finesse. Homer or strikeout. (I heard somewhere, maybe false, that in the minors they don’t even teach location anymore. Just throw it hard. They’ll swing.) Forget steals, hit and run, bunt, hitting to opposite field. Is it reasonable to compare this to the 3-pointer in the NBA (as much as I love Steph Curry #30)?

Fortunately, WordPress let me rescue my pawliekokonuts identity. I would’ve missed that dude. (Yesterday Firefox crashed and forgot nearly all my sign-ins; and my cookies settings got whacked. Sigh. #modernlife.)

I don’t really mind the game today. Home runs are fun. I miss the steals. My main complaint about the game is that my team isn’t playing it the way the other teams play it.

Yes, Pawlie, the new analytics have altered the sports greatly, not all of them good ways. In fact, few of them good ways.
And MLB started using an altered ball, of course. It does get tiresome watching strike outs, walks, and guys pounding the ball into the shift.
There are moments went real baseball still comes through. Moments.

the shift thing is definitely annoying because that’s something the players SHOULD be able to beat. But home runs are great. Wish our guys hit them more often. Or enough.

In the SF Chronicle today, 14 concerts listed coming up at the Fillmore, and I’ve never heard of any of the 14 headliners. lulz

come on, you’ve heard of Rage Against the Machine, right?

Zumiee report back with how many seconds you made it thru this song.

Sure, I’ve heard of those guys, of course. They weren’t in the Fillmore ad I saw, though.
The song is tolerable once the guitar comes in. 🙂

Read Darling’s earlier book, “The Complete Game” fascinating insights on pitching. He doesn’t like what’s going on (2009) either. Says pitchers are way overmanaged with everything called from bench, and are overprotected due to extreme reliance on pitch counts and have been dumbed down to think all they have to do is go 5-6 innings.
Did talk about things that helped him grow, from minors pitching coach Al Jackson (arm slot secondary pitch conditioning and hitting spots with command) and mgr. Dave Johnson. Great scene where he’s getting lit up early for 6 runs in 2nd inning and Johnson lectures him on mound but says he isn’t coming out.
“No more of this caveman baseball.”
You’re a smart guy. You’ve got to think. You’ve got to have some kind of game plan. You need to learn how to pitch your way out of this shit. I suggest you start getting some outs so you don’t ruin the back of your baseball card.”
Which he did, going 4 clean innings afterward by “changing it up” yada yada

HRs are fun. juiced ball, no. giants are -50 when it comes to bombs this year but I think both sides of equation are equally to blame. The LU without a few non productive hitters/new blood with more power next year, sure.
But at same time, look at following pitchers:
Poms 17 bombs allowed 77 innings
Holland 17 bombs allowed in 68 inning
Beede 17 bombs allowed in 82 innings
    smith/Watson 17 bombs allowed in 100 innings
That’s way too many especially given home games at the O. At least 2 of those guys above are gone. But how much improvement from guys replacing them?

giants are also 14th or 15th NL for walks hits BA and OB-so they aren’t getting enough runners on to create traffic and more opportunities to score, and not enough guys on when they do hit HRs. OB has to improve along with power to get past .500 ball they can play as is.
