D-Rod Encore
Another big game for DRod to show last start wasn’t all VMI related. Wind coming in a little, humidity down, maybe he gets a little park help and surprises us again.
My buddy Luke, one of my main men in Portland, texted me this while watching the game last night:
“His stuff needs to move off the plate. Everything is on or right around. Big league guys will feast on that stuff. He needs to get them chasing shit that looks like a strike. His shit is up and over the plate. He’s missing his spots by a mile. Posey sets up outside and the pitch is in.”
I trust Luke on this and he explained why Beede’s stuff, while excellent, is just ending up in the wrong spot. Hopefully Young can help him fix that.
Didn’t take Watson long to give it up….pfffttt….
Mosst of that was Gott. But Watson fucked up that play twice. He shoulda gone home, but he fumbled the ball and blew the DP besides.
Missed the fireworks (evening exercise walking) and check my phone . . . Boom!
Or that shit. Fuck.
Dick Dick Dick.
Vogt Vogt Vogt!
Fucking Vogt!
Tag…Tied up again.
It’s Chiefs-Rams II, Loo.
Exactly what it feels like, Mac…
lol, based on how that looked off the bat and Kuip revving into his Bomb call I thought that was gone for fucking SURE!
Damn, I thought that was gone.
wow Pillar just missed another one. How many runs it take to win this one? Belt gives SF lead again.
Day game tmw getaway day not a lot of recovery time for pen once this one ends.
Finally Belt does something, Just need Crawfish to hit a bomb,
Can’t remember a slugfest like this in a long time.
It’s pretty cool, as long as you ignore the sheer ridiculousness of it…
exactly. It’s fun.
Shit! I’m thinking Waveland Ave for Pillar’s.
A shut down inning? PLease?
Gustave is just wild enough to get through this.
Gustave is rad.
9 pitches 8 strikes.
Mac thx for finding that box with the Brock bomb. Ken Hubbs Andre Rodgers (who played before or after for SF) Elio Chacon (guy Mays body slammed right?) Ken McKenzie was a Giant too iirc
Ha, that’s before my time, I don’t know any of those guys.
Ken McKenzie was the only 1962 Met with a winning record, I believe…
Only Loo pulls stuff like Brock HR at Polo Grounds (and Ken McKenzie) out of his memory bank.
Unbelievable. Hubbs was a sad story.
Gustave should be the Player of the Game.
Yes, a 1, 2. 3 inning.
Gustave, who the puck is this dude?
He’s pitching like Moronta used to. Finally, somebody got some outs…
With the way Watson and Smith are going, I’m with Kerry.
Happy birthday WillieD. If you are really 68 you’re the youngest looking 68 year old I’ve ever seen
Ha thx Big Guy, sad but true I’m afraid. Remember on train ride home I was telling you about 50th HS reunion, which is this weekend. And I am taking your advice and skipping it.
yes I remember. And then straight into a nice long slumber.
Hoooo. Nice. A shut down inning.
Yaz needs a triple for the cycle.
“It’s fun.” yes except when you have to watch the other team rake your pitching staff too, which sucks. Looking back at comments, not many seemed to think it was fun when DRod was in there and Gott sucked too.
gotta take the good with the bad in a shootout, my man
fair enough. I was listening to Miller on radio coming home and he was little dismayed Slater got thrown out at 3b, especially after Yaz doubled right after that off Holland whom they were pounding.
They can stop shooting after Longo’s AB.
I’d use Bum in this game if necessary…
Or Dick Dick Dick’s
I’d keep Gustave in . He threw like 12 pitches.
Nope, he’s out.
Happy birthday Willie!
Pffffffffffffffffuck. Got to get that first out
Happy birthday, Willie!!!
Jesus. Fuck this.
Told ya they shoulda left Gustave in there. Fuckin Moron-ta.
Sorry, Shawn, that was a fucking terrible pitch.
This ain’t fun no more.
lol
areyoufuckingkiddingme?!
Great name for a race horse!
too many characters
Cue up Bochy’s “proud how we battled” quote…
Happy birthday, WillieD. I’m hoping Magnus thinks I’m the youngest-looking 70-year-old he has seen. Fuck this game. It ages us!
Fuck that. You look like you could be WillieD’s dad…..
Bahahahaha! Just kidding
The pen is really awful these days.
Hey, it’s been a fun game. Entertaining. I don’t really sweat the losses, our chances at the WC have been and continue to be a complete longshot
thx guys. Place is playing like f-ing Coors. I realize this doesn’t happen every night here, but imo there is a park factor to warm weather humid yards of Midwest.
Remember what I said.
Cover of SI for Yaz…
re-said it. What did you said?
Wow. Finally caught a break, but we’re still gonna lose. Coonrod and Suarez can suck, but guys like Moronta and Gott shouldn’t.
Fucking Crabman. Hit this clown already.
Around 1978, the Cubs and Phillies played something like a 23-22 game. Maybe Schmidt had 4 homers. Pretty sure it was a Saturday game because I heard about it, I think, on Sunday morning, maybe Easter, with an abominable existential hangover.

Boom! right score; wrong about Schmidt
Memory always plays tricks. I don’t know how I could’ve had a hangover because I wasn’t drinking then. But of course one can have an existential hangover any time. #Greenland
This must be the game you meant, Pawlie…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN197604170.shtml
Pawlie, Schmidt did hit 4 HRs in one game at Wrigley in ’76.
It seems like I am conflating the memory of two games and merging them. Either that or . . . too many Rolling Rocks, too much brain damage
Pawlie , Last time I was at the races, there was a horse named Knightdressauxeyed. I was gonna bet and lost track. The bastard won.
Of course Hoof Hearted was also in that race.
I love horse’s names. For about 20 years, The Washington Post has run its annual What Kind of Foal Am I? contest in the Style Invitational humor contest, taking the names of Derby candidates and “breeding” them. Only once did I get an Honorable Mention for that contest. For many years I was a weekly contributor to the Style Invitational who got in now and then; never won. Runners-up got cool T-shirts, HMs fridge magnets. A whole subculture grew around it in the D.C. area, breakfasts, dinners, etc. In 1995 or so, wife and I drove from Syracuse to Baltimore for a gathering of Losers, as runners-up are affectionately called. Haven’t submitted for years.
Loo surely knows the character limit for horse names.

Playing the crowd. Fuck that.
Grim, Crab-like…
Wrigley sure has become the proverbial House of Horrors for the Giants.
11 wasn’t 1 louder tonight.
Ahh, so much for watching Cueto pitch for SJ. He’s going to Sacto to pitch.
speaking of b-days: Mike Yaz is Friday 23rd, grandpa Carl tmw 22nd.
Tomorrow also 54th anniversary of “The Incident”…
Happy BD, WillieD!
Giants kept it interesting, but interesting doesn’t buy ya jack shit, especially when playing a team you are chasing. Another pfffttt….
Well, baseball is good for distracting us from the fact we have a deranged sociopath for president who’s angry because he couldn’t buy Greenland.
Today, I actually sent an email to the Prime Minister of Denmark. I apologized for the insanity and bad behavior of our current occupant of the White House. I agreed with her that his behavior was indeed “absurd”, and not to hold it against our country, who wishes to remain friends and allies with hers…
Hopefully this insanity ends on 1/20/21, which still feels like a perilously long ways away.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Iceland is giving a visit there by Mike Pence next month a miss, as she has “prior commitments”. Maybe the blackhearted self-proclaimed “Christian” will find something else to do there while visiting, like swallow a quart of Icelandic Aquavit and eat a pound of ripened raw cod that smells like ammonia.
“Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said “prior commitments” will keep her from meeting with Pence in early September. She is scheduled to address the Council of Nordic Trade Unions’ annual meeting in Malmo, Sweden, on Sept. 3. Pence arrives Sept. 4 en route to the United Kingdom and Ireland.”…
“….Strickland, who said he endured a “clean break” of his nose while doing hip exercises in a squat rack at PNC Park. He attached a mobility cord to the barbell to hold it steady as he worked.
“Obviously, that didn’t work out too well,” Strickland said. “When I sat down on the ground to do the hip stuff, I went to reach up and grab the cord, but I guess one of the ropes still got hung behind it. And when I grabbed it, I guess my weight pulled the bar off and crushed me.”
The Nationals’ training and medical staff was on the scene “instantly,” Strickland said, and he was quickly ushered to get X-rays. The clean break meant there wasn’t a high risk associated with it, and since he’s able to breathe regularly, he’ll be available to continue pitching.
“That’s why I’m thrilled it’s not as bad as it could be,” he said. “That’s one of the things that they determined with the X-rays, was just to make sure that the nasal passages were still straight and clear”
Jansen blew another save tonight.
To keep alive the WC hunt (and keep Smith and Bum) we go all in. Trading away all the bullpen and keeping those guys was a mistake. I feel like our hopes died today. The only good out of keeping those 2 was WC. Slipped away today. FUCK
I think we’re 6 back in the LC with who knows how many teams ahead of us,
Can’t fathom a miracle with this staff.
Yeah, it’s over…
Not an A’s fan at all, but it is enjoyable watching them stick it to the Yanks the last couple days.
Agree that tonight’s game was great fun, but a last gasp.
Giants now playing rest of the season to see who is a roster keeper, and who is not…
It was weird hearing the post-game crew say how much they liked Vogt in the lineup and wanted to see more of that. No mention of Posey.
It’s the truth. No question…
Craw and Belt at bottom of the order, again and Craw has been double switched out lately. Avelino got a start already and might get another tmw with day game. Times they are a changing.
Like Vogt a lot too but he’s already 34 yr old C coming off injury and not particularly adept behind the plate. Hope they can keep him around but like Pablo maybe best used part time.
In the box Loo found with Schmidt blasting 4 bombs Ron Reed pitched. iirc he also played b-ball in NBA and was about 6-7. Not sure who he played for gotta look that one up…Ollie Brown was on Phils then too, cool player.
I looked up Ron Reed’s basketball career, Willedav.
I hope you had a very happy birthday…

The biggest future star RR was drafted ahead of was the great Butterbean Love.
Looking at old drafts in any sport is kind of fascinating…
