Friday Night No Lights
Friday night, no baseball. Why? So the Giants and A’s can finish off this ridiculous rivalry series that nobody except the guy who wears the split Giants/A’s cap cares about? I couldn’t even guess what the series is at now or how many games are in the series. Anyone know the answer?
Not much left to do except evaluate talent and have some dudes dig a ditch all the way to the ocean so the facebook housewives can have somewhere to send their tears. Or are they still all in on this team? Zumiee you seem to take that pulse pretty accurately, if Posey dropped to 8th in the order would there be outrage? If he was released, would the tears flow freely? Or are they smart enough to see the value in him leaving?
The Giants dont have a game tonight??? The outrage…the Cubs series was the official back breaker but the summer run at least gets Boch close to the Mystical Magic Number. Posey should have been traded a good 2 years ago when I first started to harangue about the matter. But this org will never let him go at this stage and dollars owed…
But Boch now down to just 4 games over. 500 as SF manager…again, once he hits 2000 and presumably will be at or over .500, he should immediately resign!!!
Hey you had a bunch of posts go to spam filter for some reason last week. If that happens email me I don’t check it often and it’s usually just filled with idiots I’ve banned
I was having posting issues thought it was lack of wifi in the Jo…
Craig, what happened to the photos GH and I sent you for the Flap photo bucket?
A’s are rolling right now. Swept the Yanks and held down their scoring, before that took 3 of 4 from Astros.
They hit HRs, have excellent IF defense, strong pen and seem to get lucky with retread vest SPs like Roark H Bailey (great at home for them so far) and Fiers. And for most part very young team.
Interesting to see how many fans they draw and if Giants fans show up in Oaktown.
Last night listed as 25 thou. In old days half the yard would be Yanks fans and same thing would happen when Boston was in town. Saw them in Gossage days place was packed, lot NY blue. Watching Gossage warm up in pen RF was a trip.
Barring a major injury still feel really good about how things have played out over last couple months. giants have young players who have gotten their feet wet with more on the way. Product on field is much improved and more watchable and farm is rejuvenated.
Despite lack of bombs team has shown it can compete and play .500 ball alongside vast majority of the NL. Even with guys like Yelich and Harper Giants have won like 2 or 3 less games than Phils and Brewers over almost 130. As is they’ve shown they can hang…get better players, serve notice.
this is not completely accurate. When they were on their huge run they were near the top or at the top of the national league in homeruns for that.period
They are right now a .500 team despite how (and who) they started the season. I don’t expect Giants to continue to hit as many bombs like they did in their streak or as other teams do—that does not mean imo they can’t win games and play .500 ball.
Most of recent Ls have come because pitching has sucked, like the 12-11 game the other night. I know we stand on opposite sides of fence on this–I don’t think how many HRs you hit as important as you do.
In the current mix, sure HRs are more prevalent, but I agree with WillieD, I don’t think you have to be a top HR hitting team to win or be competitive.
Case in point is the Cards. 24th in MLB, and just ahead of the Giants at 12th in the NL. Phillies are 11th in NL, and Nats are 7th (middle of the pack). Cards win playing more small ball, pitching, and playing good D.
I like HRs as much as the next guy, but hate that other aspects of the game are waning (such as the hit and run, moving the runner over, bunting, and stolen bases). I prefer a well-balanced game.
The Facebook ladies are smart. They know when a season is heading towards missing a playoff spot. They root for the team with a lot of heart. They just get emotionally attached to the players in a way we don’t, and that’s OK. I think a lot of guys USED to get attached that way. But we don’t anymore. And in some ways, that’s kind of too bad. We’re more clinical about sports now. But the analytics have taken over, and that’s where sports are now.
I do think as time goes on, we’ll appreciate that Bochy got to end his career with some dignity, with a team that was pretty competive. The Giants got swept by the Cubs in three games by a total of 4 runs.
Looking forward to the managerial search assuming it’s not already been decided.
Should give us plenty to yak about while we wait for Stix to return – perhaps early next season…
mm guessing it’s someone from either LA or Oak side with strong analytic background, younger and Hispanic ala Cora. Z still doesn’t have a GM either so that could be another issue too. Does he pick a GM first and allow him to make that decision?
Will be cool as hell to have Stix in the mix here, again. As I mentioned a while back, was floored when he called me. While he has suffered physically in health, his mind was razor sharp, and the dude still dissects the game in his letters.
Meanwhile, Brazil elected a Trump-like guy for president and he’s allowing their rainforest to be burned down.
And one of the Koch brothers died and apparently was not able to take his billions of dollars with him.
And what should we do zum to stop the burning? Invade Brazil???
Comical how so much gets talked about what we could/should do on climate change as a country to restrict our growth/green new deal/yadda yadda and the impact of these Amazon fires are so much more impactful than anything the US could do on its own. All the while China and India pollute at will but somehow US climate policy on global warming will cure the world of climate change??? Not gonna happen folks…
And throw in future volcanic activity and that impact will overwhelm any policy prescriptions..
GH – you expecting Krakatoa II soon?…
Snark, no one was expecting Mt. St. Helens and that probably emitted more “pollution” at once than probably US produces in gas emissions over 30-40 years…but there is constant volcanic activity globally and burning rain forests that pollute the air to a far greater extent than what the US pollutes.
The polluting of the air from the fires in the Amazon is a small issue in comparison to how much oxygen the rain forest creates for the planet (20% of the world’s oxygen).
Yeah. Who needs clean air and water? So, more coal! Burn baby burn! You have kids, right, GH?
Police in Rio have shot and killed 1,100 people this YEAR. We need to catch up, amirite?
I grew up in the 70s, some of you are older and the US was far more polluted in the 70s…these are scientific facts. The air was far dirtier, the water was dirtier, garbage was thrown all over the place. You would go to parks and rip-tops of beer cans would he strewn about. Everything outside of the homeless plague in places like SF and LA is clenaer in the US than it was in the 70s. And the enviro left nuts drove a stake in the cleanest form of energy in nuclear energy and there has not been a single nuclear reactor built for commercial energy since the 70s…
And the killing of nuclear energy had forced more reliance on burning fossil fuels but we have uncovered a huge US Supply of clean burning Natural gas making us far less dependent on foreign and even domestic oil. The elites rip coal but they dont take into account the millions of people living in West Virginia and Kentucky and elsewhere who solely rely on coal jobs to survive. What do we do with those people, shoot them to make the left happy? Plus they will still sell the coal to China and elsewhere and they have no compunction about burning coal to meet their energy needs and they are not worried about finding ways to burn cleaner coal and that coal burning also then has a far greater effect on climate than what the US emits….
Not buying your nuclear talk, brother. Clean energy, but with a HUGE risk. There is a reason no other reactors have been built.
And most of our government is in bed with (been bought by) the oil and coal industry (we have a former fucking coal lobbyist running the EPA…talk about having the fox guard the hen house). Our government should be investing more in renewable energy and get the fuck off oil and coal, IMO.
Top priority (along with dealing with climate change) should be the repeal of the Koch Law (er, I mean Citizens United) and getting money out of politics. We are much closer to being an oligarchy than a democracy, thanks to the almost unlimited flow of money to politicians.
Yes things were far worse in the 60s. Then the EPA was started. Under Nixon, for fuck’s sake. And the air and water quality got much better.
Not sure what your point is here, but is it to return to the grand old days of the 60s when Lake Erie burst into flames and we were dumping slag directly into waterways? Winning!
It would be great if we had a U.S. president with any kind of moral integrity to speak out on these things. The U.S. can be a world leader when it chooses to be.
The days of this country being a world leader died long before Trump.
Everybody hates us, including the people that move here…
Obama bought us a lot of international cred. Regardless of Bush’s inane ways, and Trump’s dangerous ones.
Please, please, please move Posey out of the top of the lineup. Have Belt or Crawford ever considered making an adjustment? Does Bochy know how to manufacture a run?
The good news is Posey can DH in Oakland. (sweet jebus)
Dick or Slater too. when Vogt is C doubt Posey gets off bench. Sucks Pablo might be done for the year, he’d help vs. AL teams too. But he can’t throw or hit RH.
Did not get a chance to report that the college kid made the journey last week to Bowie MD to see the Richmond Squirrels and Bart and Heliot. Bart ended up not playing and signed a ball for mybson’s buddy but not for him and Heliot I think went hitless and refused to sign anything and my son broke into Spanish and that did not help…the blowing off of young fans starts earlier and earlier with ballplayers.
The run by the Virginia Little League team from the other end of our county ended badly last night getting shellacked by the Louisiana team who had two big boys (one pitching and the other hitting the snot out of the ball including a grand slam) was too much to handle…will be an interesting game against the Hawaii team…
From Bruce Jenkins article today about player nicknames. Eye Chart!
Body types have been a reliable source, leading to “Piano Legs” Hickman, “Schnozz” Lombardi, “Banana Nose” Bonura, Ron “The Penguin” Cey and Jimmy “The Toy Cannon” Wynn. Dick Stuart was such a disaster at first base, he became known as “Doctor Strangeglove.” Third baseman Brooks Robinson became “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” and Mike Hargrove, known for his incessant dawdling in the batter’s box, was called “The Human Rain Delay.” Sal Maglie, a pitcher known for brushing hitters back — a little chin music, if you will — became “The Barber.” And for the impossibly named Doug Gwosdz: “Eye Chart.”
Hard to believe “Stretch” was the best they could do for McCovey…
Can’t believe their no baseball game on my birthday, wonder if Yaz wants to party with me lol since it’s his Birthday too 🎉🎊🍻🍺🥃🍸🍾
Have a good one, Kat!
Thanks Loo I will..
Happy B-day, Kat !
But, sorry, Lil’ Yaz won’t be much good Saturday if he gets a skink on with ya today.
Send him an e-gift birthday card…
Lol 😂 yeah I guess Yaz can’t you the DD(designated drunk 🥴) instead of DH…
HBD, Kat!
No game on a Friday is too bad. Strange schedule this year. No game on the 4th of July either.
Happy birthday AK!
Thanks Blade..
Always liked former Giants nickname Ollie “Downtown Brown” it has a certain flair to it..
Oil Can Boyd was one of my fav nicknames. Hard to even remember his real name (Dennis), that’s how prominent his nickname was. Supposedly got that moniker ’cause he would drink beer from an oil-can sized vessel in his growing up days down south.
Oh, and, GH, some countries are actually doing something to phase out fossil fuels (China is completely phasing out coal, compared to the stupid push in the US to rejuvenate it, and petro motobikes are pretty much banned and have gone all electric, not to mention the nationwide network of electric fast trains reducing the demand for plane travel).
Oh, and, happy b-day, Kat!
Yeah, Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd. I always liked that guy mostly due to the nickname. Just looked at his stats and this should be exciting for someone – he had a 17.3 career WAR!
I think it was Foster’s Lager. We called those oil cans…
Giants option Andrew Suarez back to Sac.
Rumor please be true, that maybe they activate Jaylin Davis and have him DH against Oakland…
Suarez didn’t show much, unfortunately.
The Cubs today are wearing the whitest uniforms you likely ever saw.
Just put white hoods on them and they’re ready for a Trump rally. Oh no I didn’t!
🙂
LMAO…
Such a shame we didn’t elect a bull-dike, criminal hag when we had the chance…
She would have been 1,000 times better than the deranged sociopathic weirdo currently in the Oval Office.
Why don’t you take this shit somewhere else, bud?
Right. Much better a racist 8 year old.
Nats ahead of the Cubs 7-0, which is kind of funny in a sad way.
So you might call it a white out for the Cubs against the Nats at 7-0?
Yeah, a snow storm. 🙂
All the teams are wearing “monochrome” uniforms this weekend, and this sportswriter doesn’t like it:

Washington is playing good ball, might be biggest threat to Dodgers getting back to lose the World Series again.
Trump tweeted something about China today and the Dow went down 600 points. Not sure why the Dow is hanging on his every word. His tweets are pure insanity.
So why don’t all you political geniuses short the market?
You’ll make a fortune…
Time to start buying gold.
Happy birthday, AK!! Have a good one.
Agree with Loo on taking the political stuff elsewhere. Because as we all know, nobody has ever had a political discussion with someone and changed their mind. So, it’s pointless. And this is a Giants blog anyway.
Fine, then Loo also needs to stop the gay-bashing on this site. It’s completely unacceptable.
And any Flappers doing it need to stop the gay-bashing on this site. This site is not a friendly place for any gay people who visit the site.
When did I ever do that, Zum?
Because “faggot” was my favorite insult in 1971, that’s relevant?
Happy B-day Kat and belated Wille!
Yeah, this is weird not having a game Giants game on a Friday.
You probably know this but on days they don’t run at the race track they call that a “dark day”. I always thought that was a fantastic description…..
Ha, is that term even used anymore? I think Monmouth Park only runs Fri-Sat-Sun in summer, so there’s more dark days than racing days.
It is fantastic – and old time TV wrestling fans might remember that when they announced the following week’s matches the best one (untelevised) was called the dark match…
HB AK! enjoy
Last night Strick gets a W by going 2 shutout innings for Nats.
And Gomer blows save and takes L for Jays vs. LA. bottom 9 gives up lead off walk double double bloop single and Jays blow 2-0 lead and game.
Man Marlins with a 19 spot vs. Phils tonite. Phightins actually led this 8-7 going to bottom 4th. Sean Rodriguez got last 2 outs of the game.
Phils led 7-0 in the 3rd inning!
No big deal.
Baseball’s only frame of reference is this season…
Rare occasion of rooting for the Yanks. Didi hit a grandslam. Very cool.
Loo, when did you ever do it? Well, today, for a start. You called Hillary a dyke. Clearly, to you, it’s a crushing put-down to call someone gay. That kind of thing causes a lot of pain to gay people. My wife and I have a lot of gay friends. Great folks. All of them make my life and hers better by them being in it.
You’re a good guy, with a good sense of humor, and seem real friendly. I’ve just never understood why you use the slurs sometimes.
Atlanta struck out 26 times in an extra inning game tonight. That’s….not good for the sport.
Melancon got the save. Billy Hamilton won the game, with his bat singling in go ahead run in 2-1 W.
In order for Braves to acquire Hamilton after Royals waived him he had to pass through entire AL and every NL team beside Dodgers. He also stole two bags. gotta feel like he’s sitting on top of the world.
Panik hit 2nd with predictable results: 0-5, 2 Ks.
7 earned runs for Ryu. That’s pretty groovy.
I don’t know if the Yanks can get past the Astros in the playoffs, though. Astros seem like a team on a mission.
In those white batting helmets, the batters look like:

Lots of games on TV tomorrow. MLB Network, FS1, and the Giants/A’s game.

Zumiee– any racism or homophobia is not allowed at the Flap. In the spam filter there are several words that will get you fast tracked to the filter if you use them. And if there is something openly or consistently said that’s offensive I zap it myself. Having said that, this isn’t a church or school. I allow some rougher language here. There are words that are allowed to pass through because they might not be as intense as the others. “Dike” or “Dyke” are not flagged words. Mostly because, while derogatory in nature, they aren’t as bad as other words.
Calling something *gay* for instance is something I used to do all the time when I was younger. I stopped doing it as I got older because it was offensive to gay people. But I’m not flagging the word *gay*. I just choose not to use it in a derogatory manner.
But I agree with the tenor of your statements last night so I am banning the words *dyke* and *faggot* right now.
wow cbs site had 1:42 of Patty Mills highlights as Aussie team got measure of revenge vs. USA squad still rotating guys in/out. Bogut involved too. Loved his passing and screening and aggressive D, classic old school big man stuff.
Dwight Howard back to Lakers? Man Luke Walton has to be doing lqtm.
