A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bay Bridge Series

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 24, 2019

I guess tonight qualifies as a big game. Bum toeing the rubber. Our *arch rivals* in the box. The haunting beat of the drums in the distance….

Runs will probably be pretty scarce tonight.

Pour one out for my homey Dick VanDyke whose name, while never uttered here before, shall never be uttered here in the future……

Most of these are just terribly unoriginal.

college football gets started with few games today yaha!

Z talking about Slater’s ability to play on IF…hmmnn. Hasn’t shown a lot of pop yet (esp at home) but he looks like much better hitter to me and can drive ball to opposite field too. I like him and he whacks LHP

    • Flavor said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:09 am

He and Yaz might have me over valuing the ability to hit the other way for power. Fuck the shift. That’s what those guys say.

  3. willedav said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:11 am

Astros took Verlander’s side of the argument with Detroit Free Press, no surprise I guess. V requested paper send someone else as their part of press corp. They refused so he said he’s not doing the presser with the guy in the room, Stros barred the door and wouldn’t let him in til after it was over.

As a blogger on yahoo wrote, they don’t have the right to decide who the paper sends. This guy is credentialed and approved and has a right to be in there per collective bargaining agreement. Disturbing, that a personal beef (related to the Mrs maybe?) allows team to decide who has coverage rights/who doesn’t.

    • Flavor said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:14 am

Terrible precedent to set. I hope this has been nipped in the bud but it’s happening at the white House so we’ll see where this goes.

  4. willedav said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:33 am

Minor lines report: Dubon 3 for 5 with BB scores 5 in 11-5 W over Pads PCL. He’s hitting .341 at Sac.
    Gerber 4-6 38th double 83 rbis
Sac is in first place btw.
    Ramos another 0-4 3 Ks batting .214.
    Bart homers, his 3rd.

Um, big discussion on MCC site Aug 22 blog post on what Giants should do with Pillar for next season. Last year of arb eligibility probably looking at $7 mil ish. Lot of disagreement from bloggers over there re: value going forward, who can replace him in CF and the $$$. Also as a fan fav, energy and clubhouse presence

    • Flavor said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:36 am

for 7 mil of course you keep him, that’s not even debatable. We’re still in a re-build, he can help with the bridge to the other side for 7 million peanuts.

      • djloo27 said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:43 am

They would be insane not to keep Pillar.
On the other hand, Gennett looks like a goner.
        Panda…… who knows?

      • zumiee said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:52 am

Is Gennett officially a disappointment to all of us? He’s pretty disappointing to me. I know he’s still basically coming back from injury, but he gets over-powered by a pretty good amount of the pitchers. Maybe next year is when he really comes back to form. Whoever gets him should get him for a minimal contract.

  5. unca_chuck said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:55 am

Solano is the keeper. Gennett? Meh.

  6. willedav said, on August 24, 2019 at 8:56 am

2 ? I would have is who can you live without and who else can really play CF?
Reason Davis hasn’t been up yet revolves around whose place he takes if he’s gonna be in there a lot–Yaz Pillar Dick Slater have all hit ML pitching at certain level. There’s also Shaw and Gerber (who played CF last night in Sac) both of whom have done pretty well in hitter friendly PCL. Would Z/new mgr (and/or GM) go all in with kids in rebuild or would it be better to have one solid vet at least for another season of control?

And again, argument is 2 sided–Pillar numbers for certain categories aren’t great, and more Longo level. The fact that he leads team in certain other ones is kind of like the argument against Belt in years previous–it only shows how crummy team is and less about how he would rank league wide.

Not to keep harping on this weekend’s uniforms, but….the players have to be thinking “What the heck? We signed off on THIS?” To be fair, in the evening games, under the stadium lights, the black uniforms seem to look pretty cool. But those white uniforms, oh man.

    • djloo27 said, on August 24, 2019 at 9:35 am

  9. snarkk said, on August 24, 2019 at 9:48 am

Criminy, I though Dick van Dyke had died, then I read last night’s posts.
DvD is almost a hero to me. Dude is in his 90s and is still sharp as a tack.
He just was in the Mary Poppins remake, and danced on a table.
One of my favorite all time TV shows, DvD, mainly because of him. The other players were good, but he was the main guy. (though they may have had the worst child actor of all time playing his son).
Great physical comedy skills. He was Jim Carrey before Carrey.
Married some years ago a woman about 40 years younger. Nice move.
He was not a dancer, no history of it, but did all his own stuff in first Mary Poppins, including Step In Time, one of the great dance scenes in movie history. He does some moves there that are incredible for someone with no history of dance training.
Every interview I’ve seen him, he’s one of the most positive attitude people I’ve ever heard–
Maybe because the guy was a raging alcoholic for years, including when he made the DvD show, but beat it.
Long live DvD, the original “the Dick”…

Fire alarm at San Jose International. Terrible example for all, but I hid in the shitter versus evacuating the building as the PA system instructed. No way, no how, I was going through TSA security again. Joined by many travelers.

Makes me wonder if we would evacuate if a shooter was reported via PA. So common place now, I might have to hear actual shots to react. lqtm

Not fun, Steve. I think I told you, after this summer having several domestic flying debacles, I’m avoiding flying in the US from now on. Was going to fly from Phoenix to SF next week before my flight back to Vietnam, but I’m taking a few days and driving up. Asia, and international, no problem, but when I’m in the US, I’m becoming John Madden. Trains, buses, cars only….

  16. snarkk said, on August 24, 2019 at 12:31 pm

    That Verlander thing.
One thing that does piss off fans is the sense of entitlement that some of these long term, big money players seem to develop. Verlander makes more in one game than that reporter does probably in 4 years. What gives Verlander the right to deny this guy the ability to do his job? Nothing. And, it violates the CBA in some way. MLB should fine or discipline Verlander to the greatest extent possible under the CBA. The other players conspiring to protect Verlander should be disciplined as well…

  17. zumiee said, on August 24, 2019 at 12:55 pm

Bummer on Pablo, You all know that ruins Bochy’s last carnival act having Panda play every position on the field. I would of gotten a kick out of him playing 1 inning in CF trying to track down line drives in the gap..

    • djloo27 said, on August 24, 2019 at 6:09 pm

Were they really planning to do that, Kat or was it just something you were hoping to see?

      • alleykat69 said, on August 24, 2019 at 6:15 pm

Loo..No he had plans of doing that is what I understood once they were out of it, which is now..

  26. alleykat69 said, on August 24, 2019 at 6:13 pm

Do you think Posey would have a mental breakdown ( think Anthony Perkins in the Jimmy Piersall story) if he saw his name in the batting order like 7th are 8th and grab a bat in the clubhouse and start destroying Bochy’s desk?

    • zumiee said, on August 24, 2019 at 6:17 pm

It has nothing to do with Posey. It’s all Bochy. He thinks it will be embarrassing to Posey.
Of course, the number one goal should be to win the game.

Guy has .780 OPS and plays a good 3b. He has 3 less HRs than Pillar in 140 fewer ABs and almost exact same slugging pct. the combo of him and Sando was perfectly fine this season.
what the Giants need to do is find some one who can play the sando role and fill in at multiple IF positions. the idea any of the kids can take Longo’s spot and put up those kind of numbers is far fetched.
I don’t give rats ass what he makes–only the quality of play at his position.
