Smarge Again

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 27, 2019

Ok, let’s see if I can get this one right. Jeff Samardzija is pitching tonight, right? Has everyone admitted they were wrong about him? He’s checking in with a 3.44 ERA/1.08 WHIP and after watching everything our underwhelming youth be toeing the rubber with, I for one appreciate this dude.

Look, baseball is stupid the way they reward free agents and until that changes we’re going to always get overpaid free agents who aren’t worth the paper their contract is written on. Guys like Belt, Crawford and Posey, hey, I think they’re trying their best, I don’t think they mail in their effort. But they are the weakest links on our team, by far.

A guy like Smarge who has struggled with injuries and now is showing up every 5th day pitching like a man, I can dig that, man. You can’t fake a 1.08 WHIP this late in the season. He’s pitched very well this year.

Yep, Samardzija has been really good this season and deserves the props. The club is basically stuck with Poesy, Crawford and Belt but I’m interested to see Zaidi’s off season approach to Samardzija, Longoria and of course Bumgarner.

Looks like Bochy finally was asked about Posey batting third. I guess five months’ worth of stats won’t be enough to make him budge.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 27, 2019 at 7:35 am

Bochy is so delusional when it comes to Posey. Is he just getting hammered with him from his alcohol tour every night and passes out then Buster fills in the LU card himself?

  3. willedav said, on August 27, 2019 at 7:28 am

Yaz in a little slump lately too. 0-12 with 8 Ks. Sometimes tries to do too much I guess. Pitch he swung at last night wasn’t near a strike. Having fine season but does K a lot.

Good analysis about Jaylin Davis’s outstanding minor league stats since he joined the Giants . . . Also, some other up to date info on Ramos, Bart, and other hopefuls in minor league ball.

Smardaramjam is one his last year so maybe very tradable this off-season…but Will Clark’s comments about the hitters not putting in the time in the cage I think is the heart of the matter….

    • chipower9 said, on August 27, 2019 at 11:19 am

If you are counting next year as his last year, then yes, you are correct. This year is not his last year. So, in a trade for him, his 18 mil salary for next year would have to be part of the discussion. I don’t see the Giants eating ANY of that contract to move him, as I think they will need him for the rotation next year, especially since we have no idea as to the status for Bum next year.

Yaz haz been chasing the high fastball for a couple weeks now. Posey? Jesus. He’s been in his ‘slump’ since the 2017 all star break.

  8. unca_chuck said, on August 27, 2019 at 8:16 am

Smargle? Yep. He’s been our best guy, or close to it. I was hoping for .500 out of him, but then again, I was hoping for something like 18-12 for Bummie.

  9. alleykat69 said, on August 27, 2019 at 8:26 am

Why do the Giants keep teasing everyone thinking their still in this race? Davis should be up starting every game right now for evaluation and just getting use to playing at the park!
Fuck it my OF I would hope push hard for jobs next year are Davis, Ramos,Yaz, Pillar&Slater battle it out for 4th spot unless Ramos Fizz fizzles out in ST which might be likely and needs more seasoning..

  10. blade3colorado said, on August 27, 2019 at 8:38 am

This is just my opinion on Smarg and the rest of our players . . . Yes, give props to eye chart for pitching well this season. He basically has replicated his first 2 seasons with the Giants, where he pitched good, but not great. My deal with Smarg is that he has never filled the promise of that 5 year $90 million contract the Giants gave him in 2015. Based on what we have seen this season, I would prefer that he be traded for prospects during the off-season while his value is relatively high, but am also fine with him completing his contract, where he will be 35 years old.

Frankly, I am not overly impressed with anyone on this team, including the new guys – Yaz, Solano or the Dick. They are all over 29. Similar to Suarez and DRod, whom both were good pitchers last season, but essentially flamed out this season, I wonder about whether they’ve caught lightning in a bottle like those guys? My perspective is that none of these guys are world beaters or they would have been in the Show years ago.

Consequently, they, along with the other “filler material” Z has brought on board, I am positive about because they practically cost nothing. Like Pillar and Vogt, they are found money under the sofa cushions. That’s fantastic until such time that the Barts, Ramos, and players that Z drafts mature and make the team. Bottom line is that we still will need a couple of excellent drafts and key trades to make this team better in my opinion.

    • chipower9 said, on August 27, 2019 at 10:28 am

Agree with much of what you say, Steve, and especially the “will need a couple of excellent drafts and key trades to make this team better in my opinion.”

    • chipower9 said, on August 27, 2019 at 10:32 pm

Regarding the likes of Yaz, Solano, and Dick, they certainly are not long term pieces, but I like their grit, and they have added a charge this year. Maybe they help us bridge to the next generation of Giants.

  11. snarkk said, on August 27, 2019 at 8:40 am

If Posey were making league minimum doing what he’s doing with a linguini bat, he wouldn’t be in the 3 hole. Bochy retirement fully welcomed here…

      Ditto

    • Flavor said, on August 27, 2019 at 9:40 am

Boch really exposed himself with that quote. He’s just mailing this in on autopilot. He’s actually always been on autopilot. That’s HOF worthy?

      • snarkk said, on August 27, 2019 at 10:18 am

Vogt should be the starting C with that bat of his, and this team’s inability to score at home consistently. Buster should see one or two games a week…

  12. chipower9 said, on August 27, 2019 at 10:26 am

You nailed it, Flav. Smard is pitching today. Not much for your troll to jump on, today. 😉

I agree on your take on Smardj. The dude has definitely been one of the bright spots on the team this year. He has one year left on his contract at 18 mil. Hoping he can finish out this contract strong and be a solid piece of the rotation next year.

  13. Flavor said, on August 27, 2019 at 10:48 am

Smarge might have a little *Mike Leake* in him. Like, maybe he’s just a low pressure guy. Speaking of Leake, good chance for him to shine tonight in a no pressure game for either team……

  14. zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:08 pm

“He’s actually always been on autopilot. That’s HOF worthy?”

He’s got the hardware to get in. The three trophies gets him in.

    • Flavor said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:10 pm

how bout POsey? That’s a hard no right? I was looking at his stats the other day for his career–underwhelming to say the least. I compared them to Bench’s, Bench dwarfed him.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:11 pm

Posey was on-course for the HOF until a couple of years ago when he fell off a cliff.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:12 pm

Posey has the hardware, he just needs to compile more hits. He needs 2,000 hits to get to the HOF, in my opinion. He’s about 700 short or so.

      • chipower9 said, on August 27, 2019 at 1:10 pm

As he stands now, no way Posey is in the HOF. As Zume said, until a few years ago, he was on track…now. Uh, no.

And one of Bochy’s biggest flaws is his unfettered dedication to his veteran players, even when they suck over a prolonged period of time.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 27, 2019 at 3:10 pm

Another sore subject with the FB Wives Club. To suggest Posey isn’t Hall worthy is to strangle puppies and drown kittens.

  15. zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:10 pm

Bochy was the right guy for the 3-in-5 teams. Those teams had great pitching talent, and veterans providing help with leadership in the clubhouse.

    • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:18 pm

What I mean is, Bochy didn’t “over-manage.” He had just the right feel for how to work with those guys, especially the bullpen.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:18 pm

Without a lot of talent on the team, Bochy is just another guy.

  16. blade3colorado said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:20 pm

I guess Bochy gets into the HOF. I recalled the near flawless use of the bullpen and almost as good, substitution of bench players in key situations. Coupled with his use of mid-season additions like Ross, Scutaro, and Sanchez, I was quite impressed by how often he made good in-game decisions during our championship years.. Last, but not least (and probably a detriment now – see the “core,” especially, Posey), he always had his players backs and they love him for it.

Yeah, if I was to guess – he gets in. It’s just weird that he has a below .500 win/loss record, but apparently, that hasn’t stopped others with similar records from getting in.

  17. unca_chuck said, on August 27, 2019 at 12:34 pm

I don’t know. San Diego wasn’t likely even the 8th best team when Boch took them to the world series. Bochy always shined with his BP management. Setting a lineup card on the other hand shouldn’t be too difficult. That being said, I think Bochy is in with his 3 titles in a walk. Sure, it’s a different era but only 10 other managers have 3 titles.

Posey? His numbers now are equal with Thurman Munson and even with his tragic death, he isn’t in. But, Posey has the likeable thing, the 3 trophies, MVP ROY, a slew of SSes and gold gloves. I think he gets in more on his popularity.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 27, 2019 at 3:11 pm

This is more response to the assertion that Bochy is average with average players. I think if he managed the Yankees/Red Sox, he’d have 6 rings. If not more. Bochy was never given a really dominant team. He managed the hell of of the 2010 squad with cast-offs and spare parts.

Good article about the new call up, Dubon, although this paragraph had me laughing . . .

“With his new organization, Dubon is blocked at shortstop by Brandon Crawford (and his no-trade clause), who is signed through the 2021 season. However, while Dubon has played primarily shortstop in 2019, he has ample experience at second base and could immediately step into a regular role there as he auditions for 2020 at-bats. The Giants recently cut ties with Joe Panik, creating a clear opening for Dubon to slot into the lineup.”

Blocked??? Now, that’s funny. Come next season, with Bochy gone and either this kid providing competition or someone else being added (sure thing with Z being in charge), I personally think Craw will ride the bench or be platooned.

  26. zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 3:58 pm

I never warmed up to Gennett. Maybe it was the gum-smacking. He was often over-powered by opposing pitchers. Maybe he’s still recovering from his injury.

  27. alleykat69 said, on August 27, 2019 at 4:04 pm

Wow Zman doesn’t screw around, jettisoned Gennett so he could get a look at Dubon( plus salary dump savings for next year) but still won’t bring up Davis? and goes back with Rickard. Is Dick basically useless now? And Yaz day to day u would think theirs room for 2 outfielders.. So I guess it’s all about starting the players time clock ⏰ so Davis won’t be here till Sept1 unless the Giants don’t think he deserves a shot Lol 😂

    • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 4:30 pm

I’d imagine Davis will brought up for the September call-ups. It would be shocking if he wasn’t.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 4:32 pm

It doesn’t mean Bochy will play him much. He had the young Buster Posey up in September of ’09 and hardly ever played him. Bochy is old school, where you treat rookies like garbage. None of the new managers and GMs do that anymore.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2019 at 4:34 pm

Bochy WILL play the rookie when there’s absolutely no other option, like with Yaz, for example.
Sabean knew he had to trade Molina in the middle of ’10 if he wanted Buster to play a lot after he was brought up.

Can’t figure Boch out in his Swan Song season.
Now he says he’s gonna give the kid Dubon all the playing time as possible.Funny when Posey came up September 1st he rode the pine basically the whole month and ended up with just 17 AB’s as Big Titty still caught most everyday in a year they were out of it early. Finally in July the next year, did he get rid of the Titty/Posey platoon as Posey was raking and low and behold a W/S championship and ROY all in his 1st season..

  30. snarkk said, on August 27, 2019 at 6:16 pm

ZMan is fully committed to seeing the talent. Moves and more moves.
I love it. He knows they have no shot at WC, so let’s see what these guys can do. Bochy is the only one possibly standing in the way…

  31. Flavor said, on August 27, 2019 at 6:18 pm

Love that Gennett got sent packing. Z doesn’t give a fuck, man. He spared the core this season because it was Bochy’s finale but all those dudes are on notice that the end is near…..

  32. snarkk said, on August 27, 2019 at 6:26 pm

“Host parents” generally refers to an adult or adult couple who house in their home a young person or student (usually high school age) who is an exchange student from another country or somewhere else in the same country. They take on that role as part of a program or maybe even an altruistic reason. Dubon came up to Sac a decade ago out of Honduras and stayed with such a couple while in high school. IDK the details. Mrs. snarkk and I have been “host parents” for two different high school girls, a month each in two different summers, out of Mexico who came up here for a student exchange program. The older snarkkette several years ago went down to Mexico to their town in the summer before her senior year in high school as exchange student in the other direction. Best thing she ever did. After that she spent a year in Spain. Now, she’s back at Drew Univ in Jersey (small private college) double majoring in Spanish and International Relations. She’s essentially fluent in Spanish. That summer program in Mexico really energized her and focused her in the direction she’s headed. We keep up with both our Mexican “daughters” all the time on WhatsApp. The younger one just went to Germany for a one year exchange with “host parents” via Rotary. She’ll come back more than conversant in German. The younger snarkette is darn near fluent in French, she has a certificate that allows her to go to any French speaking Univ in France and take classes in French, as long as she qualifies otherwise. I suspect she will do at least one semester abroad in France during college. She is entering UCSB in a month. There is a really a mind expanding advantage (and work world advantage) to be able to speak another language fluently and experience/understand that culture. My German is pretty good, I spent about a year there off/on in my younger days, but I’m nowhere near as good as my snarkettes are in their second language (and I’m jealous in a nice way)…

Well, when/if she goes, she’ll be 21 or so.

Miller said Craw is 12 for his last 28 tho still batting no higher than 7th. He gets switched out and platooned plenty lately. After day off tmw Giants play 18 days in a row so I’m guessing he gets his share of days off esp vs. LHP.
Same with Vogt –he’s 34 coming off major injury and has been C for 5 months. It isn’t fantasy ball, Cs get lot of wear and tear by now. with Garcia up that will provide more rest opps for he and Posey during 18 game stretch.
