No Cole
The Giants were listed as one of 9 teams Gerrit Cole will be considering this off season. I can’t think of a worse decision than the Giants signing this guy. He’s still throwing damn near 100 in his final inning. Think that’s an arm that’s gonna last through his next contract? Ludicrous. He’ll get a TJ within a year and that’s if his arm stays attached to his body which it might not as hard as he throws. He’ll be 29 next week. NO THANK YOU.
Signing big money free agents is a completely antiquated, lazy way to GM a baseball team. I trust Young Z to do the dirty work in the trenches to bring this team back to respectability and relevance….
DRod pitching tonight unless I’ve messed it up again…..
Tell me Flav, what do you hope Z does re: Bum in off season? smith too for that matter. Z kept them so now he has to figure out next move. Dunno enough about Cole to comment though I’d guess $$/yrs prohibitive.
I still think Giants are going to be long way from matching what other teams do when it comes to HRs next year even though they continue to get younger and more athletic. So I’m hoping pitching gets a lot better, soon. Other than Smrdz, mostly disappointing for SPs and young pen guys have been up and down. Sucks Gott is out hope whatever ails him isn’t serious.
And yes, Belt at home is just flat out awful, no excuses. He’s has to go somewhere he’s more comfortable hitting, and Giants need to figure out a replacement within system with 2b/SS soon to follow.
I’d be fine signing Bum to something short term. 3 years/60 mil something like that. To hell with Smith who will fall apart like all closers do. Let someone else hold that bag.
mm agree on Smith. Ever since the streak of successful closings ended Smith hasn’t been the same. And what has happened to Blake Treinen, who got lit up by the Royals and lost another game for A’s?
Well as far as 2B, Zman dumped Genett to clear the way for Dubon who will take over next year and hopefully play some SS as well against lefties since we’re likely stuck with Craw thru out his contract.Solano can be a super utility guy (2B,SS,3B) when someone needs a blow..
Do think msg gets delivered though that Craw’s days as full time regular are all but over. So at that point how does he handle it? He bats 8th a lot already and I’m sure analytics guys who will make out LU for next mgr. ain’t gonna like Craw. So he’ll be stuck hitting 8th like when he first came up when he’s even in there. See how this plays out.
In answer to Willie’s q on Bum, I am with Flav and am down with anything LESS THAN three years. Will be interesting to see what kind of interest he will get (I suspect quite a bit), and whether his loyalties to the Giants (if he has any) figure into the decision.
Yes, DRod tonight. Which DRod will we see.
I am looking forward to seeing Cueto pitch Saturday night for the RCats. Great little ballpark and Sacramento is awesome for a summertime game.
Good for you Chi with a final chance to see a Shimmy Cat performance in Sacramento, hope he pitches well to setup his September starts! Go Giants!,Go Rivercats!
Thanks, Kat. Will provide an update to The Flap on Saturday morning. I’ll also probably get to see your boy, Jaylin play.
As bad as Craw has been (and he has been bad), Belt has absolutely cratered per Flav’s post yesterday:
“Brandon Belt is hitting .198 at home this year
That is all…..”
Ok dont think this is Farhan’s method but signing Cole to be your #1 arm does make sense but then that means you dont make Bum an offer unless they both sign below market deals and more back-ended to get through the Posey Craw and Belt dead contracts and the expiring ones for Cueto and Smardaramjam. But highly doubt it happens…and you still have Longo’s awful contract to try and move…
Good points Peter. Yeah, for the reasons you cited, I don’t see adding more long term contracts to the garbage ones we already have. That being said, he did try to add Harper last season. Or was that Harper nonsense instigated by Baer (who still hadn’t assaulted his wife yet)?
oooh, have a hard time seeing what happened as an “assault.” She took his phone away from him and they had both been yelling at each other. Him walking away is very bad look but she is hardly innocent and imo overreacted quite a bit. I’m not excusing Baer for being a slime but don’t see him as being guilty of a criminal level of assaulting his wife here. She could have reamed him over this but went in complete other direction afterward, at least publicly.
And the $30 mil was on the table, Harper turned it down because he said SF would have to add to it because of Cal taxes. Might be total BS but money was there for taking.
Totally disagree. It was an assault and the only reason he was not charged was due to his wife not pressing the matter. Willie, there are various levels of assualt, e.g., simple, aggravated, etc. Regarding your last sentence, I have zero idea what you are talking about, as I did not question the authenticity of the offer – only calling it nonsense (my opinion).
and by the by, I can find you a dozen links where the word “assault” is used describing what Baer did (on video no less).
Big column in Chron today re: J Davis, and a smaller one on Shaw too. Among other things, Bochy said he is happy with 4 OFs who Giants currently have so it’s tough to find spot for Davis on roster given the needs for extra pitching spot. Shaw is also NE native who would love to be with SF during visit to Boston next month.
Next season should be interesting. Giants AAA mgr says CF is Davis best spot…I can see where Pillar (31 next year) might be become odd guy out vs. all the younger guys maybe including Gerber fighting for spot. Or Giants stash a couple OFs in Sac and sign Pillar in off season and eventually make him available.
Man I would love to have Gerrit Cole&Bum at the top of the rotation, you need a couple of STUDS, to help with the maturity needed from the other youngsters.
Isn’t Cole, Crawford’s brother-in-law and former teammate at UCLA? That could help getting Cole here with some added help by Crawford ..
Im looking forward to this offseason. Zman will make moves. I expect at least two of the core to be offloaded somehow. Has to be done ✅. You can’t have four big contracts doing squat at the plate. Two, maybe is palatable. No Cole. Zito, Cain and Cueto Deals and Smardzxxx, how much more contract pain need be shown that LT deals with pitchers is no Bueno ?…
We all know that something needs to give with the core, but don’t hold your breath.
Craw 15 m next two years. Full no trade
Belt 16 m – next two years and can block to 10 teams (unknown)
Posey 21.4 m through 2022. 3 mil buyout in 2023. Full no trade
Longo 15 m, 2021 18.5, 2022 19.5, 2023 option – 5 mil buyout
Moving any of these guys will be tough. Giants would have to eat some salary. I think the most likely, and easiest to move would be Belt.
Still more blah blah blah about Davis is the fact that they don’t want to start his FA clock until absolutely necessary. The wonks on 95.7 were going on and on that he was 29. Uh, no.
Still though, if this is about his FA clock, that’s a bigger joke than Connor Joe from Kokomo.
Yeah, 3/$75 for Bummie is fine with me. I don’t think he’ll have a problem with that. He prolly still feels a bit guilty about the dirt bike thing.
Could also be that Sac wants him for a River Cat playoff run. They need one more win to clinch that spot.
And no on Cole as this is what we are trying to get away from.
Davis’ AAA line. In his first year at that level. Jesus. Like they can’t fit this in? Or at least give it a solid look? Bochy is cruise-controlling this thing off the Golden Gate.
H:81 2B:17 3B:1 HR:25 RBI:67 BA: 338 OBP: .418 SLG: .729 OPS: 1.147
I know Boch is just going with the party line by saying there’s no room for him, but Davis would more than likely make the team better, and we’d know what we have. Dick Dick Dick has viagra issues, and he more than likely will end up as a solid bench guy, so play Davis already. this is maddening to me.
They might as well wait till next May if they are that worried about him.
Dick won’t even be on the team next year. He’s been a great 2 month rental wonder and the Flap applauds you for the resurgence that really you did to jump start their run to respectability, but the best of him is done.Like Bill Walsh use to say:Better to get rid of someone a year early then a year to late!
Sadly the Giants didn’t take that approach under Sabes/Evans, but I feel confident that will change and I’m already seeing that under Zman!!
Oh btw I believe Jaylin Davis actually has 35 HR’s this year not 25, but who cares under Bochy’s stubborn belief that he’s not needed in our current outfield…
Good post AK. Agree with most of what you said.
I think there is some truth in the Giants being relatively happy with their current mix in the OF. Rosters expand shortly, and Davis will get his look. There was really little chance of him cracking the line-up before rosters expand. Plus, as I have mentioned a few times, perhaps Sac wants his bat for their anticipated AAA playoff run.
Yeah but that run could possibly go all the way to Sept 18th, Now I hope you get a chance to see him Saturday Chi( most likely) but I’m greedy with my boy Jaylin and want him up Sunday/Monday at the latest and STARTING!!
They want to stick with 4 outfielders, which makes sense, so if Davis had come up before September, who was supposed to get sent out? Dick, Yaz, Pillar, or Slater? Slater has a .400 on-base %. And there’s no guarantee that Davis is great. Mac the Oaf used to tear it up in AAA all the time. Davis should get a look in September at the big club, I would think.
Dick went on the 10 day DL( mid Aug)which turned out longer, and then could only occasionally PH, that’s when Davis should of gotten the callup. And he might of made a difference in the Cub series instead of getting swept.I believe any other team that had Davis would of immediately brought him up as hot as he’s been, but not the Giants who are notorious for bringing up prospects..
With Zaidi now, any old rules of Sabean and Evans don’t really apply.
Disk has been pretty flaccid since his injury. They could have brought him up then.
ahhhh once again I didn’t see a post that was answered. nvrmnd
i saw an online sports column about how the Giants shouldn’t have traded Panik.
Man, that is so tired. Panik SUCKED for the Giants the last few years. How does that go by some people? Because he’s white and he looks like some kind of TV show baseball player or something? Seriously, there’s a kind of subconscious racism that happens with people sometimes, who would otherwise never think of themselves as racist.
He’s still sucks as his -0.2 WAR demonstrates. Maybe the NY Mets Facebook wives think he’s dreamy or something.
I think some of the women want to mother him, like he’s their child.
The FB wives went nuts over the Panik ‘trade’. As in “why did the Giants trade Pence and Panik! They never should have done that!”
There’s no reasoning with that.
Did the housewives also get butt hurt over Aaron Rowand & Casey McGee?
Ever notice how the proverbial “All American Boy” is always white and usually blonde?
So I guess Mickey Mantle was more American than Willie Mays…
It was a major burning issue with TF. Of all of us, TF was the most resistant to crowning Posey, Crawford, or any of the honkeys as the boy wonder. He had seen the racism against players of color in the earlier decades and it was something that could trigger him at any given moment.
*could trigger him at any given moment*—there were a LOT of subjects that had this effect on good ol Twinner
Looks like the Mets can be crossed off the list of WC contenders.
Drod…
…….sucks
Augh
Watching a game like tonight (on MLB) I marvel at how we ever win a game. Belt Craw Posey and pitchers spot. How can you ever score when 5/9ths of the lineup are easy outs? Our guys who hit occasionally are the 6-9 level guys on every other team!
Bingo. That’s why they have to shed “the core” as much as possible before next season, whatever it takes to do that…
Giants doing a slow Phhhhhhhttttttt into the last month of the season.
Play anybody but the core…
I think “Phhhhhhhttttttt” is a faster leak than “Pfffftttt”.
Have to check with the expert, Blade…
Watching voit was great. Thought fastball. Saw fastball. Hit the shit out of it. watching some of our other guys hit is just not fun. Longo with bases loaded was the opposite of voit
