A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winding Down

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 20, 2019

Feels like we should be able to knock Atlanta around a little, right? They’ve clinched, besides Matt Joyce trying to settle a score, what do they have to play for? And the Giants? Add on to that 2K baby.

In Reno this weekend for the annual Stanford/Oregon game. Don’t ask why we meet there, that’s just what we do.

Cardinal in a shocker?

BUT, my theory is for sports to stop worrying about the youth, and just keep working on marketing to adults better.

    • zumiee said, on September 21, 2019 at 9:24 pm

People change as they get older.

      • blade3colorado said, on September 22, 2019 at 6:28 am

No, that’s incorrect, insofar as baseball viewership is concerned. Specifically, if you did NOT play the game (as we all did as Flappers), you are significantly less likely to watch it as an adult. This should set off alarm bells in the Commissioner’s Office. Think about it for a second . . . Did you play soccer as a kid? I didn’t and I have zero interest in it, except during the final World Cup game . . . and that’s only a maybe.

MLB should hire the Giants marketing people. The Giants do a much better job than baseball as a whole. MLB’s “I just wanna play” campaign sucks. What does it even mean? A player looks sternly into the camera and says “I just wanna play.” Lame. Typical MLB lameness.

    • snarkk said, on September 21, 2019 at 9:46 pm

An understated reason for MLB losing popularity is that the players aren’t very marketable, because they’re not very interesting. A lot of these guys are just high school or JC grads, listening to them being interviewed is boring ass. How many times do we have to hear the slider’s been working “good” lately? I’ve heard Trout of the Angels just a couple of times. Meh. Matt Cain interviews were like listening/watching paint dry. Posey? Zzzzzz. Strick? — he’d promote his duck hunting clothing line — quaaack. And, a lot of the stars are from the Caribbean and Central/South America, so English is a second language. Their interviews are very clipped, or non-existent because they don’t have the language skill. Compare baseball to Steph or Draymond, or Iggy or even Bogut when he was here, those guys have something to say, like it or not…

Remember the ad where Wilson is on the mound and he asks the guy in the crowd if the woman sitting next to him is his girlfriend? The guy gets a little angry about Wilson checking out his girlfriend. It’s very funny. If MLB ran a commercial like that it would get buzz they don’t normally get. Be bold with their commercials.

My university here in VN (actually a UK uni) recently added a major in Gaming. A major. Not just a class or two, a 4-year major, to create games, interactive marketing within the games, etc. Eek….. you’re right, we oldsters really don’t fully get it, at least I don’t.

    Speaking of Louisiana….
“A Louisiana man has drowned after proposing to his girlfriend underwater while the couple was vacationing in Tanzania.”

I’ve posted here before about my pet peeve about elaborate marriage proposals.

    • snarkk said, on September 21, 2019 at 10:20 pm

I just read this on the internet.
There’s a pic made by his GF of the dude wearing a scuba mask while doing this proposal, but no snorkel. No idea how far down he had to go to do this. I used to be a PADI certified diver. You don’t free dive in the ocean with no snorkel. Even if where you are it’s like a bathtub. That’s just flat not on. He may have gone down too far and ran out of air on the way up. Or, without a snorkel, he got to the surface and started swallowing water and panicked. Most scuba and snorkel accidents happen not in the water column, but at the surface. Here, no idea. Tragic, but this guy obviously was clueless about the danger in what he was doing…

I am continually amazed in life how one little decision often made with the purest intentions can just fuck you up forever….

      • snarkk said, on September 21, 2019 at 10:42 pm

I proposed to the future Mrs. snarkk in the Rainbow Room on top of Rockefeller Center, surrounded by two Kir Royales. The worst that could have happened was knocking over one of them so that the champagne spilled on my crotch, and I’d have to order another Kir Royale, and walk back to the hotel with wet underwear. Actually, the worst that could have happened was she’d say Yes. Ha ha. This guy gave his life to propose…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on September 21, 2019 at 10:45 pm

I proposed once… once…. her answer was she wanted to date someone else. Once was enough.

      • snarkk said, on September 21, 2019 at 10:47 pm

        Her loss Paul, no doubt…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on September 21, 2019 at 10:53 pm

Yeah, Tom, she ended up getting herpes from the guy she wanted to date. And then came crawling back to me. Uh, no thanks….

      • snarkk said, on September 21, 2019 at 11:36 pm

She did you a favor saying no…

When I saw story yday that Bochy may manage the Pads next year….I did a literal spit take…

    • willedav said, on September 22, 2019 at 12:02 pm

seems unlikely. Boch will move to front office for Giants in some newly created position.
Pads might be better off just keeping Barajas guy who has been around most of their younger players before.

  8. willedav said, on September 22, 2019 at 12:16 pm

man another bad look for Raiders, down 31-7 to Vikes start of 4th. Meanwhile Amari cooper has 2 TDs for Cowboys.

  9. mrsprtdude said, on September 22, 2019 at 12:30 pm

Webb pitching well. I thought they go a whole series without scoring a run

    • willedav said, on September 22, 2019 at 1:28 pm

dubon just got his first hit of the series he’d been 0 for ATL, rough road trip after 3-14 vs. Boston. Not too many walks so far either, 3 or 4 in 80 ABs. If he’s gonna lead off and why not next year, has to pick up the OB. But this is good time to get feet wet. Next year he’s in deep end.

Happy flight for the Giants! You can lose 2 out of 3, but if you win the last one it’s a happy flight. That’s kind of funny, actually.

  11. alleykat69 said, on September 22, 2019 at 2:09 pm

And Bochy can always say I never loss my last road game lol 😂

  12. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 2:56 pm

In the SF Chronicle today, there are 16 headlining acts listed for the Fillmore coming up. I’ve only heard of two of them. Kurt Vile, and The Waterboys.

    • blade3colorado said, on September 22, 2019 at 3:31 pm

Sixteen acts and you’ve only heard of two of them. You, Bozo, Willie, etc., know a variety of music genres and I think I know quite a few as well. However, I looked at those sixteen acts you mentioned and I have heard of NONE of them. Just speaking for myself, but it’s a sign that I am definitely getting old. Ha.

      • alleykat69 said, on September 22, 2019 at 3:56 pm

Yeah goes for me as well Blade&Zumie
My son’s a DJ on radio and he shakes his head thinking I should no the band :The Interrupters, I hear their great though sigh 😔.. Yes getting old.But still say whoever will listen, that I grew up in the times of the best rock&roll of all times!!!

      • zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 4:07 pm

Yeah, it doesn’t mean the newer acts we haven’t heard of are good. Time will tell for the newer acts.

    • wilcojoe said, on September 22, 2019 at 4:08 pm

Fishermans Blues by The Waterboys is a good album. The title track is fantastic.

      • zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 4:33 pm

Yeah, I like those guys. And not a newer act, of course.

  13. snarkk said, on September 22, 2019 at 3:35 pm

Webb looks good on the highlights. Nice slider going.
This kid looks like a keeper, his time up the last 6 weeks is invaluable going into next season.
Beede has to get it together next Spring or he’s back to AAA or trade bait. I doubt he’s worth anything in trade now, he’s looked awful overall, in between the occasional good start. He throws too many hit me pitches…

  14. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 4:08 pm

    Niner/Steeler game is pretty sloppy.

  15. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 4:41 pm

Niners prevail. A win is a win.

    • Flavor said, on September 22, 2019 at 5:08 pm

I mean is it? Niners are just a rag team clumped around a bunch of other rag teams.

    • zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 5:14 pm

A lot of fumbles, botched plays, and penalties by both teams. Hard to watch. Kittles is special, though. He is fun to watch.

      • Flavor said, on September 22, 2019 at 5:41 pm

3 in 5 ruined me. I just can’t get invested in wasting my time on bullshit teams anymore. New thread tomorrow, btw. In Reno airport now. The only thing I know for certain in life is to spend your best moments hanging out with the best people you know. Everything else is just a waste of time

  16. alleykat69 said, on September 22, 2019 at 5:06 pm

I thought Adam Sandler played a good Waterboy…
Oops 😬 thought we were talking about a movie not a band..

  17. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 5:19 pm

What I’m really excited about on TV today (tonight, actually) is the next episode of the Ken Burns country music documentary. Every episode has been very interesting. I’m still grieving over the loss of Patsy Cline in a plane wreck in the previous episode.

  18. unca_chuck said, on September 22, 2019 at 6:25 pm

Hey, the 49ers are actually pretty close to being a great team. Their defense was hitting hard all day. The O was turnover happy, but to win a game like that is a bit of a statement.

Since parity is the rule of the day, who knows?

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on September 22, 2019 at 8:48 pm

Nice, Chuck. Finally some music I can dig up in here.

      • zumiee said, on September 23, 2019 at 3:29 am

        Is it music? 🙂

  19. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 6:45 pm

Tonight, I think Kapler completely moved into the “so fired after the season” category.

  20. zumiee said, on September 22, 2019 at 6:50 pm

We may see an epic amount of managerial changes after this season. The new GMs have the patience of a gnat.
Padres have already gone and done it.
Giants will get a new one.
    Phillies and Cubs probably.
Maybe Mets, Marlins, Rockies, and a bunch more.

  21. snarkk said, on September 22, 2019 at 8:25 pm

I will put Linda Rondstadt’s version of Crazy against Patsy Cline’s version, any time…
