Baseball: The Aftermath
Wonderful day of racing in Southern California yesterday. Sadly, in the final race, a horse went down and had to be euthanized. Horses are athletes, there is always going to be risk just like with human athletes who *take the field*. It’s sad and unfortunate. But horse racing is an amazing, timeless sport. I’ll never apologize for loving it.
With the Dubs in straight up tank mode this is going to be a tricky off season for me. I love the Niners but that’s just one game a week.
I’ll try to get jazzed about the hot stove but right now that’s not doing anything for me.
True that. Dubs were awful to watch even before Curry got hurt. They will surely set a record for the most losses ever by a team in the finals. Thankfully the Niners are a fun team to watch. Having a good defense means they are in every game.
The older Snarkette competes on her college equestrian team back east. Div 3 small schools mostly. When we visited her several weeks back we went upstate NY to one of her meets at an outdoor horse 🐎 facility north of Poughkipsie. Beautiful horse country with hills full of fall color. There must have a hundred girl riders from a bunch of really mixed type of schools —Marist, SUNY New Paltz, Vassar, etc., even from nearby Army at West Point (who had the best gear of course, but didn’t do that great). Beautiful horses in a beautiful environment ridden by decked coeds. Pretty good day. Older Snarkkette took third out of 7 in her flight; she was jazzed. In these meets the horses are provided and drawn at random. So, one week U might get Count Fleet, the next you get Buckin Bronco. Your experience and ability to size up a horse quickly to figure out how to handle it are key…
Blade made a good point at the end of the last thread. If a horse doesn’t want to run they don’t run. They stand in the gate when it opens and don’t move. That is one of my favorite words of all time. They “dwelt”. It doesn’t happen very often. I saw a horse at DM do it two races in a row and they retired her after the second time she did it.
“Dwelt” is awesome, but not quit as horrific as “Refused”…
Giants do have lot going on in next couple days. Watson did exercise his option to stay. Vogt is FA and Giants have only short time to negotiate before he can go anywhere, like Bum. Not to mention GM and mgr.
wow Fins get a W beat Jets. NY twitterverse must be on fire.
The horses are well-trained. They know if they run the races, they get food. They’re smart animals, but they’re not rocket scientists.
That is a great post by Blade at the end of the last thread, but I disagree with some of it. 37 horses have died on that race track in the last year. There’s elements to horse-racing that are not natural to the horses.
and zero horses died at the Del Mar meet. A lot of factors went into that spike in deaths and Santa Anita has taken steps to fix the track. Blade was spot on about the use of drugs to mask injuries. That needs to get completely eradicated. I’m not too worried about the electric shock buzzers, that was more a problem 30 years ago and at smaller tracks. I’m pretty confident that doesn’t happen at a track like Santa Anita anymore
I’m sure sometime in the past decade plus, I told you about the time at Belmont in 1974 when I saw jockey Sandino Hernandez arrested and taken away in cuffs after getting caught in the paddock with a buzzer. There’s a little more to it – I remember every detail. The horse he was supposed to ride was named Calcification. Poor S.H. was a 3rd rate rider and the horse was a bomb. With about 8 MTP they announce a replacement rider – some guy named Laffit Pincay, Jr. Ten thousand people make a mad dash for the windows. Most get shut out. I heard curse words I didn’t know existed. The horse dropped from like 25-1 to like 5-1 and won for fun…
that’s a great story, hadn’t heard that one before.
Zumie, thoroughbreds are bred for sole purpose of racing. They would not exist otherwise.
And BTW, they are generally considered rather dumb…
good ol’ Sandino Hernandez died 4 years ago…..
He was banned for life, but they eventually let him back as a trainer IIIRC.
Jose Amy, too. Amy took the fall for some big time riders like Cordero, Vasquez.
The Con Errico scandal – early 80’s…

Kings ahead of the Knicks by 20 at halftime. The Knicks are not awesome.
good for Sac. Seems like Fox is playing better and they are getting something out of the big man, Holmes.
Btw, Cauley Stein is doing pretty well for GS, in limited minutes coming back from foot injury. Rest of team, uh work in progress.
The Chiefs TD scored by the running back on long play features something I always dug. He is being chased by defender but Tyreek Hill probably fastest guy on the field) sprints after him and takes away angle so the defender can’t get to him, and ultimately the guy gives up. TD Chiefs. Just to watch the teammate, usually wide receiver, go into full out sprint to help his teammate I always thought was cool play.
It was awesome, Willedav. Tyreek Hill is much more than just a burner.
He can do it all…
couple nice catches too cool player. Even without Mahomes they are fun to watch.
Niners will be in Balt to face Ravens Dec. 1. Greg Roman is O co-ordinator, hmnn. He had 4 years here with Harbs. SF won lot of games til they didn’t in 2014 and went 8-8 and that was it. Wonder what overall feeling from Chuck and others was about Roman, whose offense was never higher than 11th even in winning years.
Fun fact?
Babe Ruth’s Red Sox we’re unbeaten in 3 WS appearances.
His Yankee teams were just 4-3 in 7 appearances…
Jackson giving Pats fits. that15 yd run when they had him hemmed in behind line was impressive.
The “word” is that the Pats designed their D to stop KC.
No answers for this beast…
Entertaining NFL game, and I haven’t said that often in the last several years.
Baltimore built their defense to stop the Pats. Mobile QBs give Belichick’s defense fits. We all remember what Kaepernick did to the Pats a few years back.
And really, this is the first test for NE. And they are getting spanked. Love it. So many folks were giving the Niners shit for beating easy teams, but look at who they’ve played.
Niners have the best record in the NFL.
Unreal.
And Tyreek Hill makes Roberto Osuna look like a choir boy.
And he makes Bob Hayes look like Refrigerator Perry…
right there with this take
I figured we’d start fast as we had a fairly easy schedule. Undefeated?? No. Not in any universe did I see that.
The next 8 are a lot tougher. 4-4 I’ll be happy. 12-4 should win the West.
Roman had Gore and he used him pretty well. I just thought that Niner offense was too conservative. Like Singletary saying “we are running Gore all day” Roman and Harbaugh would lean on the run too much in my book. Under Harbaugh/Roman the Niners always had problems getting plays off on time. It cost them the Super Bowl. They had Balt’s defense tired, and Kap would have scored on the play Harbs called the time out on.
Still can’t believe Fucking Flacco beat us in that Super Bowl.
Green Bay looks terrible for being 7-2 though.
Seattle Monday night would be a great game to see live. Russell Wilson is 90% of that team. He is scary good.
Gold Glove winners. No big shockers, IMO.
