Black Friday, Unscathed

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 30, 2019

Well, at least we got to the truth about what happened that fateful night at George Harrison’s house. And I didn’t have to spend even a second in a store yesterday. So, all in all, a pretty successful Black Friday.

One thing I miss about Sabean: he did some early damage in free agency. That kept November and December interesting. He would then retire for 10 months. Young Z doesn’t seem to interested in forcing a move right now. He’s letting the market come to him. Genius.

I finally opened up this article on Joey Bart by McCovey Chronicles after a couple of days in my email basket and frankly, I wasn’t expecting much. I was wrong. Not so much about the content, which is misleading – this isn’t as much about Joey Bart, as it is about the rest of our minor league players.

Guess what? I am EXCITED. Yeah, most of these young studs wont be here for a couple of seasons or more, but I am still stoked about the minor league system “battleship” finally beginning to make a real turn. You guys all know Bart and Ramos and maybe a few know Luciano (STUD), but how about Matos, a “toolsy centerfielder” whom is only 17 years old?

Anyway, I am personally tired of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Detroit football (and basketball) and the holiday season in general. Can’t wait for my Christmas Eve trip to Thailand and another trip to the Big Island after that . . . then Giants baseball.

i notice and remember stupid things, I always noticed how this guy was constantly getting cheap shots from players during the game. I thought to myself, “Is this guy just a pussy? Or does he really get under the skin of other players THAT much?” And now he’s getting stabbed, I guess he’s just a dick? What is wrong with Pryor that everyone wants to kick his ass, lol

    • willedav said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:05 am

coached against b-ball kids like that. Running down court after rebound and they whack your top scorer with elbow, unseen. Of course if your guy retaliates the ref will see that one.
Maybe Patrick Beverly guy will get some comeuppance one day, run into a screen set by some 6-10 monster.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:43 pm

All the chicks he’s beating up, one fought back with a knife?

  3. willedav said, on November 30, 2019 at 8:49 am

    Genius?? OK
What I see is he’s lost 3 good players already off a team that lost 85 games last season.
Remember, the Padres hit 200 bombs last season and have stud 3b and SS that is one of best young players in the game plus power in OF. Do the Giants have this?
And yet because of couple black holes (2b CF) and less than stellar young pitching they lost more games than SF. But their young pitching SPs and closer is lot better than what Giants have shown to date and farther along in development.

so who is Z counting on to replace what Bum (200 decent innings) or Vogt (.800 OPS guy with power) or Smith the elite closer gave them?

Godson showed me new Pads unis. Home is pin stripes no more blue, brown with yellow. He had Friars logo in middle brown hoodie on. Preller makes some weird moves but so far (key word) he’s improved his team more than Z.

    • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:03 am

I was half-kidding with the genius call. And he should have traded the pitchers, that was a huge mistake. Also, I think you and he may have different goals. Z strikes me as a guy who’s ok with a couple of shit years if holding off on free agents means more $$ to spend down the road. And our farm system is strong. I don’t think anyone expects the Giants to be real competitive next year. If they are it will be a nice surprise.

      • djloo27 said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:13 am

Flavor: I suspect you were also half-kidding with the hilarious “disappointing” comment about Harrison’s performance during that horrific event. He was a skinny Beatle, not Meatloaf. And how about that Olivia?

      • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:28 am

yes, I was kidding about the Harrison comment. I found the image of his wife and the fire poker to be rather amusing. As you know, I don’t like the Beatles even a little bit. I don’t wish anything ill on those still alive but I’m not sad about the ones who are gone, either. Indifferent I guess.

  4. djloo27 said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:19 am

Sabean’s specialty was under the radar trade deadline/trash heap pickups.
He wasn’t real good at spending big money 💰💰💰…

    • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 9:29 am

I felt like in his last years he just kinda rushed through his job, paying for free agents to plug holes while completely ignoring back up plans for if any of the starters got hurt. He mailed it in for years after that first WS win, IMO

  5. alleykat69 said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:24 am

I don’t expect much from Z this winter unless he can dump a useless core player somehow. If he does anything it will be to strengthen the BP, lots of question marks.Another SP even a guy like Porcello who doesn’t miss starts would be nice.
Still in on a guy like Castelnous ( sp?) or Ozuna and Brock Holt who can play anywhere if he can stay healthy and bats LH which Z is looking for on the infield as a primary solid backup..

BF…How did Katie and her friend survive the “Nightmare at Union Square”?

    • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:51 am

they had some problems getting an uber to pick them up so they missed the train they wanted to catch but they made it home fine, 2 hours late. They had a blast, she spent a shitload of $$$ and I am still riding the sweet wave of unbridled happiness that I had nothing to do with that trip except drop them off/pick them up at train station

  7. Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 11:58 am

you know all I could think of was Harrison and his bride when I saw this

Harbaugh busy in 4th quarter trying to make another loss to Ohio State look somewhat respectable…

    • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 12:19 pm

classic Harbs, 4th and 1 he runs it straight into the line, loss of possession

      • snarkk said, on November 30, 2019 at 1:13 pm

He’s down by 26 early in the 4th, or late 3rd, in the red zone on 4th down, and kicks a FG.
        WTF?
Home crowd naturally booed his ass off for that…

  9. alleykat69 said, on November 30, 2019 at 1:08 pm

The only time Harbaugh should of run the ball was in the SB near the goal line to Gore instead of those stupid ass fade throws to Crabass and we would have a 6th title..

    • zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 1:26 pm

Or run some kind of option play with the greatest running QB in the history of the NFL.
But no. Brain-lock set in. Same pass repeatedly to the edge of the end zone.

  10. zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 3:06 pm

I’m rooting for Stanford in this one, but those Norte Dame helmets are cool-looking.

  11. Bozo said, on November 30, 2019 at 3:21 pm

I sure hope y’all are right about Zaidi. I’m still not convinced. I grade his moves last year as maybe a D, maybe. Everyone knew we needed some pop in the OF, a starter, a decent utility INFer and a backup catcher. But his big plan after losing on Harper was to try zeros at all those positions, less than zero if ya count Kratz. He did bring in guys later, who were fun to watch, but to me it was only guys to fix his earlier and ongoing revolving door screw ups.

He seems to be a procrastinator when it counts, he wasn’t able to sign some first round picks in LA and almost blew the deadline last year with ours. Maybe having Harris around will help him there, except Harris is a big unknown as a GM (or whatever the position is called under Zaidi). Choosing Kapler as Mgr didn’t get me all warm and fuzzy, hell, it made me wonder how long would it take for a player to go all Juan Marichal on his head.

Again, I hope y’all are right and I’m wrong about Zaidi, because where I’m sitting, he looks more like Spec Richardson than he does a genius to me.

    • alleykat69 said, on November 30, 2019 at 3:47 pm

I like your post Bozo, had some kick ass thoughts behind it.I really wish Farhan can sit down with the almighty gods on at the top of this organization and flat out tell them to cut Belt, cut Crawford, cut Longo, cut Posey, dump Baer while your at it,he’s like a bad rash that won’t go away and I don’t want him around any decision making ever again! Now go spend the money you just saved and ate,on new younger F/A that don’t cripple the team while the future young Giants arrive soon..

      • Bozo said, on November 30, 2019 at 4:33 pm

Kat, I’m not totally on board with cutting all those guys. Belt and Longo could be traded, probably with eating some salary but a change of scenery could benefit all. Before cutting them, Craw and Posey could just be vets off the bench and I’d be ok with that. Still, I would want players that could actually replace all those guys. Before all that happens though the Giants need to rebuild the pen, add a starter or two and we still need to think about the OF. I’m just not sure having the Dick, Pillar and Yaz as our everyday OF is the way to go, having someone out there with some pop and having 1 or 2 of those guys on the bench makes a bit more sense to me.
It seems to me Zaidi/Harris have a lot of work to do and right now it just looks like they’re sitting on their stat sheets.
Now as far as Baer is concerned, I’m in agreement with ya all the way.

    • blade3colorado said, on November 30, 2019 at 4:33 pm

Great post John, albeit, I disagree with it. I suspect that many of us are of the opinion that last season and next season are rebuilding years. Conversely, others here, think every year we should “reload.”

I digress though . . . Regarding perspective, I’ve learned that 2 people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different. This dude probably said it much better:

There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception. – Aldous Huxley

Yes; for example, two artists saw Lucille Ball differently.

      • Bozo said, on November 30, 2019 at 6:15 pm

I know you’re right, Kat. Although, I’m thinking it’s probably most if not all of the Flap.

Zumiee, I’d bet money that Desi Arnaz saw both of those images in Lucy.

      • djloo27 said, on November 30, 2019 at 8:18 pm

I don’t disagree with Bozo at all.
Those are excellent posts and I too am far from dazzled by Z so far…

  12. zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 4:45 pm

Kings get an exciting overtime win over Denver. Good defensive effort by the Kings.

  13. willedav said, on November 30, 2019 at 6:28 pm

Z’s job is to put as competitive a team as possible out there given $$ ownership allows him to work with, and nothing less. He may be “OK with couple shit years” but I think that sucks and is an insult to those ownership hope continue to show up starting Opening Day and pay to watch. Sure you can continue to dumpster dive and hope some of your kids will work out (hopefully better than what he opened last year with), but if that’s his idea of running baseball ops, then F him.

    • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 7:11 pm

well, it’s not all on him. If he’s being forced to work within a budget, and if ownership isn’t cool with casting off the dead weight of the Core, his hands are kinda tied, right?

  14. zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 7:48 pm

Man, what happened to Chip Kelly’s coaching career? Rough gig being a football head coach.

    • zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 7:51 pm

His Niner 2-14 season was particularly rough.

      • Flavor said, on November 30, 2019 at 8:03 pm

that seems like 6 lifetimes ago, I have barely any memories of the Chip Kelly Era

      • zumiee said, on November 30, 2019 at 8:17 pm

I looked it up. Both wins were against the Rams. That’s kind of weird.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:50 pm

Jeff Fisher was the Rams coach. That explains everything you need to know.

  15. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 30, 2019 at 8:51 pm

General Managers are usually the ones front and center, making the moves, discussing the strategies and options, etc. Z no longer serves in that function, it’s Harris’ gig now, and I admittedly know very little about the guy. Unless Z is a complete control freak, I’m kinda thinking we’ll be seeing Harris more and more as the off-season unfolds. Not expecting too much to happen between now and end of year, let the brain trust map it all out, but there really had better be some action very early in the new year.

  16. snarkk said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:37 pm

If someone thinks SabEvans could have done better this past season with the crap hand they dealt themselves up to that point at the end of 2018’s season, let’s hear it…

  17. unca_chuck said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:54 pm

If Z and Co aren’t gonna shed some contracts, then they can’t do much BUT lose. Why spend on players when half your lineup is old and awful?

  18. unca_chuck said, on November 30, 2019 at 10:58 pm

Narwhal tusk? Fire extinguisher? So much to unpack. That is amazing.

I guess in honor of the game tomorrow, the NFL Network is showing Super Bowl XLVII.

Great movie but the ending sucks. I forgot how many times we fumbled.

  19. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 7:30 am

flav you’re right in what you said earlier, but Giants have $$ to spend especially after losing 3 FAs. I’d also guess even in they redo Pillar deal, he and Smrdz will be gone by trade deadline, so there goes another 25-30 mil.

I think what Bozo said makes sense–you have to replace whomever you deal off. I can live with longo because I don’t think giants have a 3b in system to hit 20 bombs and be at his level, Posey either til Bart is ready. Craw and Belt are another matter entirely and it would serve LU to bring in better hitters and use them less often or not at all if they can be dealt.

Ramos hit .240 at AA ball with 3 bombs in 100 ABs. Both he and Bart aren’t going to move needle for a while yet. Replacing what team has already lost in pitching, including trades last year and Moronta injury, is gonna take some doing.

  20. zumiee said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:25 pm

The 2019 Giants won 4 more games than the 2018 Giants, finished 1 place higher in the division, and gave us an awesomely fun 25-5 July.
In addition to the minor league system getting overhauled.
Zaidi is doing fine so far, IMO.
