A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Niners

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 1, 2019

Really interested to see how the Niners do against this Baltimore God. It’s funny, nobody said crap about this dude till this year. And then I watched him last week and it’s astounding how fast he is–looks like he’s playing against high school kids. I don’t remember a ton about Michael Vick but there’s no way Vick was better than Jackson.

Earlier in the week I was thinking this was a good test for the defense but now I don’t really feel that way. This guy Jackson might not be something a great defense can contain. I suppose if they manage to limit him it will either be a testament to how good he is or an indication that the hype on this meteor was overdone.

But the Rams have a decent defense and he torched them.

So……

It’s ludicrous to think Z is not competitive or trying to be competitive . . . By the same token, it’s also insane to think he’s going to “relaod” when he has a bunch of “has beens” already on the roster, e.g., Longo, Belt, Crawford, Posey. Be serious. He’s supposed to “reload” with that foundation? Hilarious.

Even more hilarious is saying that “. . . Giants have $$ to spend especially after losing 3 FAs.” Newsflash! He didn’t “lose” jack shit . . . He chose to let those guys go. I echo what snarkk said:

“If someone thinks SabEvans could have done better this past season with the crap hand they dealt themselves up to that point at the end of 2018’s season, let’s hear it…”

Back to your regularly scheduled NFL football games.

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:46 am

well let’s see if by April GM can replace the 3 guys they let walk. All were important contributors last year.
S/E bashing is way old news. They drafted Ramos and Bart who are only Giants top prospects and acquired Dyson and Smith, who need to be somehow replaced or things get worse. It’s OK to let guys go but if you don’t get bring in at least equal value in, then you aren’t better, only newer and cheaper. And better by mid 2021 is what I want to see or I ain’t gonna bother watching.

      • blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 9:50 am

Ramos and Bart are NOT the only Giants top prospects. In fact, per FanGraphs, Marco Luciano is now #2 and Ramos is #3. The Giants now have as many players in FanGraphs’ top 100 as the Rays and Dodgers (3 players). More important, per the article I cited yesterday, “they’ve also added four players with future values of 40. Remember: that’s the magic scouting number on FanGraphs. An FV of 40 or greater means they see a prospect as a player who will make the majors and stick to a roster in some capacity. In May, they had 22 prospects with an FV of 40 or more. Six months later, they’re up to 26. All three of the players the Giants received in the deadline deal with the Twins are on this list, as is Tristan Beck, the top 25 prospect the Braves gave to the Giants in exchange for Mark Melancon’s entire contract.”

Personally, I’m excited by this news. In my opinion, the splashy free agent signings or trades you crave would be a big mistake for our current “jalopy” of a roster. Slowly, but surely, Mr. Z is improving our minor league system, which was left bereft of good prospects. Is it boring going this route? Perhaps, but I think his methods will get results. I am also hopeful he can get rid of Crawford, Belt and/or other over the hill players a la Melancon as Mac pointed out. .

Sorry Blade, I do feel Sabean/Evans would have started the year and overall fielded a better team than Zaidi did in 2019. Since I can’t prove my opinion would have been correct, the argument, “If someone thinks SabEvans could have done better this past season with the crap hand they dealt themselves up to that point at the end of 2018’s season, let’s hear it…”. can’t be proven, and since there are no points listed in Snarkk’s opinion statement, can’t be proven either way.

Again, I do want Zaidi to succeed because I want the Giants to win, I just don’t see how his first year evokes the complete confidence being given him here. And yes, I’m a fan of reloading not rebuilding and based on statements by Zaidi, so is he.

      • blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 10:46 am

You have a point that it can’t be proven, i.e., Sabean and Evans no longer make the decisions. However, I can point to the 4 seasons following our last World Series championship. They were in charge and we only made the playoffs once (2016).

      • Bozo said, on December 1, 2019 at 10:59 am

True, but besides the mid year collapse in 2016, they did make it to the NLCS.

  2. Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:13 am

I’m not a fan of either team, but Niners-Ravens is the game of the week by far and it sucks this is buried with all the other 1 p.m. (EST) games and wasn’t moved to tonight, instead it’s the Pats for the gazillionth time. Maybe I should’ve gone to Finnerty’s. It’s gonna be a crappy weather day in Baltimore, so we’ll see how Jackson deals with that.

  3. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:20 am

Raiders have big game too. lose this one they are probably done; even if SF loses still could win division. Supposed to be 36 degrees in KC and maybe 10 degrees warmer in Balt so weather could be factor too.

Jackson’s passing has come long way. Gotta wonder if/when designed runs take their toll.

  4. Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:27 am

I like what Z’s doing so far, especially what he pulled off at the trade deadline (see Braves-Melonhead). His throw-everything-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks approach took awhile to get used to, until he actually found a couple players who stuck (Pillar, Yaz). And while I’m as impatient as anyone to see the Giants get back to being competitive ASAP, that’s just not realistic with the hand he was dealt and I’ve grudgingly accepted this is a long-range game with Z. Now if the Giants still suck in 2022-23, then I’ll be pissed.

  5. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 9:48 am

LAs defense isn’t all that. Tampa put 55 on them. Balt 45 and Seattle 30. You stop Donald, and you’ve contained their entire D. And they are going nowhere but down. Goff looks lost, they don’t know how to use Gurley, and the O line is suspect. They are in salary cap hell, and Jalen Ramsey will likely get pissy and hold out next year.

    Super Bowl hangover?

  6. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 10:01 am

The Giants have no reason to spend on big (or even middling) names if they don’t shed at least 2 contracts before the season starts. And the owners won’t put up with a billion dollar (babies) bench. Longo at least hits once in a while. Posey Belt and Crawford don’t. They can pray Dick Dick Dick stays healthy and keep Yaz, but if those 4 guys are playing the majority of the time, we score 2 runs a game or less. All the pitching in the world won’t help that.

Saying we are going to suck anyway means what, throw good money after bad? Farhan’s approach is what we will see this year. Taking fliers on mid to low level guys and see if they stick.

  7. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 10:38 am

best running back so far has been Jackson.

Just stumbled onto a replay of Aaron’s 715th, which we’ve all seen 1,000 times.
It really hit me what an absolute meatball Al Downing served up.
I wonder if it was intentional – like McLain/Mantle…

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 10:58 am

wouldn’t doubt it Loo. love the milo Hamilton call, classic.

Amazing how that could even happen.
Lee Harvey Oswald had better protection…

Interesting how few people can tell you the name of the pitcher who gave up Bonds’ 756th.
    I can’t…

  13. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 11:39 am

Funny the dork with the glasses 🤓 who caught Aaron’s historic HR blast was his teammate Tom House better known for his coaching NFL QB’s in the offseason..

  14. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 11:40 am

Read through the MCC column linked by Blade, which has F/G ranking of SF prospects and bios, great read. Writer does note only 3 of top 10 including Dubon and Davis at 9/10 acquired by present regime. So 7 of top 8 (didn’t look them all up) signed by S/E, including Luciano and Canario in 2018 plus Webb and some pitchers. hmmnn
let’s hope for continued development under Z staff.

    • djloo27 said, on December 1, 2019 at 11:42 am

I’ve been watching my NY Rangers develop the youngest team in the NHL (I think) and even though it can be frustrating, it’s usually a lot of fun…

      • Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 11:52 am

Didn’t know that, even with the 37-year-old goalie.

  15. djloo27 said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:23 pm

Someone called Francesa the other day and asked him why there’s so little officiating/penalty controversy in major college football compared to the NFL. Francesa thought it was an outstanding question. I forgot his answer. I think it might’ve been something like the NFL making things worse by doing way too much.

  16. mrsprtdude said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:26 pm

Niners may not win against a very good team on the road, but it has been fun for them to be relevant again! That’s my goal for Giants in 2021! A younger fun team around .500 will be great for next year.

    • djloo27 said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:30 pm

  17. mrsprtdude said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:27 pm

I agree Loo. Replays for non called PI have slowed the game down, and almost never get changed anyway…

  18. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:35 pm

No more GD mistakes!~!! Defense is killing it.

  19. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:37 pm

Couple crummy passes there by Jackson. and they turn it over on downs. I thought they would pin SF deep. He has 75 passing yards all day. The PI one they challenged he threw into triple coverage.

      yes.

  21. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:43 pm

  22. mrsprtdude said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:51 pm

OMG. Best run offense in football. Run on 3rd for 5 yards. pass on 4th and one??? Twice already. 1st time bailed out on PI. That is so damn annoying.

  24. Bozo said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:59 pm

Damn, damn, damn. Hell of a game though.

  25. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 12:59 pm

got just close enough. hella game though. Harbaugh would have looked bad with clock management if he missed it.

  26. blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:00 pm

Damn. Tough loss. I rarely watch football, but that was an excellent game.

  27. Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:13 pm

Where was Kittle today? (He’s on my fantasy team).

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:25 pm

mm good ?. G rarely had much time to throw today and he’s funky in pocket and doesn’t move much. Seemed like short range throws were mostly only ones being completed.
Would like to have seen them run the play where G rolls out after run fake and Kittle heads out on his side of field.

  28. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:25 pm

He was opening up holes for Mosert who was a savage today running the ball!
I got 12.50 pts out of their TE Andrews plus a score, but of course I wanted a 49er win. Shanny sucked at clock management, they would still be going into OT if he worked the clock better at the end of the 1st half for a closer FG attempt!!

    • Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:32 pm

Dammit, Kat, I don’t get points for blocks!

      • alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:48 pm

Heh heh 😏 yeah that does suck Mac!
You know I don’t know why you can’t get additional pts for punt/KO returns as well?

  29. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 1:30 pm

Curious if a star player ever wanted to exchange a game jersey with a field goal kicker who choked a game winner against them?

Not taking long for the Raiders to self destruct.2 turnovers first 2 possessions. This tape like the Raiders will self destruct in 10 seconds Mr.Phelps…

running back from Bama Jacobs is beast though.
Watch out for next one, Najee Harris local kid out of Antioch.

  31. dirtnrocksnomo said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:03 pm

Tough one for the Niners but still a good game that was fun to watch. If Jimmy doesn’t lose that ball early they may have pulled it out. 2 loses by a total of 6 points is rough but they shouldn’t sweat it. After all these games against scramblers in Seattle, Arizona and Baltimore they’re well prepared going forward. Tight grouping at the top of the NFC is brutal.

  32. zumiee said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:20 pm

“besides the mid year collapse in 2016, they did make it to the NLCS.”

Hopefully not sounding picky, but they lost 3 games to 1 in the NLDS that season.

    • Bozo said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:13 pm

      I stand corrected.

  33. zumiee said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:27 pm

The 2019 Giants won 4 more games than the 2018 Giants, finished 1 place higher in the division, and gave us an awesomely fun 25-5 July.
In addition to the minor league system getting overhauled.
Zaidi is doing fine so far, IMO.

Question – Are the Raiders just stupid or are the Chiefs just really good? Seems like the Raiders have been making dumb mistakes forever.

  35. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:51 pm

Blade..The Raiders are just that Stupid!
Really for a very long time.
That FG attempt if that’s what you call it was so laughable 😂 it reminded me of that bimbo girl throwing out the 1st pitch in Chicago and hitting the cameraman just to her left a few feet away!

    • blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 2:56 pm

      Thanks AK . . . I thought so.

  36. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 3:10 pm

How’s that for the ultimate stupidity, off sides on the Raider player continues with the whistle blown and then knocks down Mahomes for a 15 yard penalty!!🤣🤣

  37. zumiee said, on December 1, 2019 at 3:36 pm

    An epic butt-kicking going on.

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:19 pm

and a final indignity after they do score a TD. I understand Carr is gamer, but what is he doing in there at end of game down 35? Like Romo said they aren’t out of playoffs yet, but if he got hurt they sure would be.

  38. blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:16 pm

My day will be good enough if Chargers come back and beat the Broncos.

    • Macdog said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Wow, what an awful way to lose by the Chargers.

      • blade3colorado said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:31 pm

Yeah, I thought Hayward was going for the ball too, so the contact was unavoidable. Refs didn’t see it that way. Regardless, two mediocre teams with 4-8 records. Not unequivocally certain, but everyone I know in Denver is saying that Elway will lose his job after this season. I say good riddance.

  39. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:33 pm

And I only thought the Raiders were stupid!
You give up a 37 yard pass interference penalty with 8 seconds left to go into OT? And the 53 yarder as time expires, wow 😳

  40. willedav said, on December 1, 2019 at 4:43 pm

Stanford men b-ball win again, led by Oscar DaSilva and freshman Spencer Jones who hit 5 3s.
I looked up Reid Travis who left there to go play senior year for Kentucky. Turns out he is playing in the German league, on the same team as Bryce Alford (coached by dad Steve at UCLA) who previously spent couple years in G League.

  41. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 5:45 pm

There are a lot of dumb teams out there. Cowboys included. But the Raiders and the Chargers are at the top of the heap. The Bolts make a living out of blowing late leads.

As far as the Niners go, they just have to get to the point where the Seattle game doesn’t mean anything. We stand to fall to 5th place (or worse) in the conference should we lose to Seattle.

  42. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 5:51 pm

Then you have what the idiot on the Texans just did. Picks off Brady and gets to the 6 yard line. Pulls off his helmet for a 15 yard penalty. 1st and 10 from the 21.

    Duuur.

They still get the TD though.

  43. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 1, 2019 at 7:46 pm

New England’s D has been pretty good all year (yeah yeah, I know, they play mostly shitty teams)… their points scored vs. points allowed total was insane thru the first 8 or 9 games. Lately, their offense sucks, which Brady has been saying for awhile now. Doubt you’re gonna see another Pats romp thru the playoffs this year.

  44. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2019 at 7:52 pm

Not playing like this. Their defense is getting torched.

  45. djloo27 said, on December 1, 2019 at 7:58 pm

    They entertain KC next week.
Not a must for the Chiefs who should cruise to AL West title with Broncos & Chargers at home + Bears in Chicago remaining. Not that you all should care…

    • zumiee said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:52 pm

Hey, if they can beat New England in the playoffs, we hugely care.

  46. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2019 at 8:08 pm

Tonight’s game not a indication for sure how dominant New England’s Defense has been, which was top 10 in all fantasy points most of the year, which is insane for a Defense to be..Last few weeks have dropped them to 17 overall still impressive..

  47. unca_chuck said, on December 2, 2019 at 8:47 am

  48. unca_chuck said, on December 2, 2019 at 8:47 am

  49. unca_chuck said, on December 2, 2019 at 8:55 am

Gronk is sorely missed. NEs offense is struggling w/o him. They don’t block well enough to run or pass.

The Raiders? Their defense is horrible. And if the offense sputters at all they are doomed.

    See the last 2 games.
