Being Rewarded For Being An Idiot

Absolutely. It’s a story I’ve told before. 2004 Super Bowl. I was in Reno with my main man Pa Salon, we were at the Grand Sierra (it might have been the Hilton back then I can’t recall for certain). I was not being the most responsible patron, boozing pretty good, carousing around. I think I even played some black jack that night something I don’t think I’ve done since. Most of the second half, I was all over the casino. I don’t remember what specifically caused me to do this but with a few minutes left in the game I decided to purge myself of all my losing tickets. I threw away a bunch of them (it felt sooooo good) and then trudged off in a huff to go get another beer or lose money, I don’t remember, it’s a haze this many years later.

The end of the game was the Vinatieri field goal and I was staring at the score and I was like, “wait a minute I think I had $20 on Carolina to score 29 at 40-1.” That’s when I realized what an idiot I had been and I went looking for that damn ticket that I’d thrown away. I scoured garbage cans. Looked all over the ground. I must have looked like such an idiot. No luck.

Anyway, this story goes on and on but it ended with Pa Salon convincing the pit boss to pay out my ticket without producing the winning ticket. I forget the details, he can chime in in the comment section if he reads this, but it had something to do with it being such an unusual bet and it would be easy to track if that ticket ever got cashed or not. I think we had to wait a couple weeks or so? Anyway, they paid out the bet despite never receiving or running the ticket through the machine. A definite first for me.

So, I’d like something similar to that happen this Sunday minus the losing the ticket part…..

    That is amazing customer service!
The story of the name “Pa Salon” could be interesting, too…

    Don’t do this, Loo

    • djloo27 said, on January 26, 2020 at 9:33 am

I never would, Flavor. I have my doubts that it’s real.
The “KC” looks 15 years old…

Great story, Flav, glad I asked. When you said you got the exact score, I figured it was both teams, not expecting just one team. And such an unusual number; only one other time has a team scored 29 — Colts in their win over the Bears three years later.

wow, I didn’t even think about that type of bet but it would be fantastic. Wish there was a way to send this idea to the people who offer the bets

watched tremendous comeback by Bobby Hurley’s ASU in home win over U of A. At one point in first half they were down 25, cut it to 13 at half and then began second half on 10-0 run. Ultimately won by a point on basket in last 5 seconds.
Arizona is led by 3 freshmen including point guard Nico Mannion who hit 4 3s in first half but got in foul trouble and didn’t do much in second half at either end. State was led by senior point guard Remy Martin who repeatedly got to the rim off the drive. Much respect for guys who stay all through 4 years of college, grow their game and skills, and gain experience of being on the court in all kinds of situations.
Being down 25 to hated rival, props to Hurley for maintaining composure and keeping his team on winning track.

Nico Mannion — any relation to Pace? Also, I see Stanford is atop the Pac standings.

Rutgers got a scare at home from Nebraska, a team they beat a couple weeks ago in Lincoln. RU led by 11 with about 10 minutes left, but Nebraska went on a big run and led by 6 with three minutes left. Rutgers hit a couple 3s to tie it, then Geo Baker hit a step-back 3 in the final seconds to win it.

Yes, Pace’s son and mom is a foreign beauty he met playing overseas.

I get it, by “Dope Book” was always kind of a weird name. Kinda ironic that its my boy Bobby B on the cover.
Catfish my all time favorite A and Bobby B my first favorite Giant.

Heard on radio this morning that some Doghair fans are organizing a mass attendance at Opening Day at the Angels Big A. Opponent? Astros.
Apparently, there is some sort of mass embarrassment, harassment or outrage or something that will be directed at the Astros on the field.
As long as there is no violence, I am down with this entirely.
MLB has mishandled this thing, more punishment needs to be in order to the Astros. That’s why fans will take it into their own hands, which is potentially dangerous. Plus, it could be the last straw for some fans that are wondering why they should be fans anymore, or why they should at all be interested in a game that can be rigged like this and an entire team of players suffer no official repercussions from it…

Mrs. snarkk’s male cousin was killed in a Sikorsky copter crash out in the Gulf of Mexico about 9 years ago. He was copilot on big copters ferrying guys out / back to oil rigs. NTSB never came up with a cause, basically blamed pilot error, which is not unusual result, and was total BS. None of the factors of the crash made sense to blame pilots. Crystal clear night, weather calm. That model had history of rotor issues. Copters are not the safest things out there, for sure…

    • snarkk said, on January 26, 2020 at 1:50 pm

I’m just reading that Kobe’s copter model Sikorsky S-76 is the 6 passenger executive variant of the 12 passenger variant used for off shore oil crew shuttles. Criminy, this is really pissing me off now…

    • snarkk said, on January 26, 2020 at 2:19 pm

Yeah, I’m hearing they were traveling to a girls travel team basketball game, so there was apparently a teammate of Kobe’s daughter and her parent along. Plus the pilot…

      • djloo27 said, on January 26, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Snarkk, would you know if that is a large number of passengers for that type of helicopter?

      • djloo27 said, on January 26, 2020 at 3:22 pm

Sorry, just read above where you said it was the 6 passenger model.
You may have already found the cause…

      • snarkk said, on January 26, 2020 at 3:30 pm

        Well, IDK details of course.
But, from what I know of these copters due to the death of my wife’s cousin in one, if there is only one pilot which is what the news is saying, then this is likely still the 6 passenger executive model. It still might be rated to carry more than 6 or a weight max load that would accommodate more than that. The larger model of 12 passengers has 2 pilots. I do know that professional, experienced copter pilots normally do not F around with extra passengers and weight issues. LA Times is saying the flight was nearly 50 minutes in when it went down. Destination was a basketball camp/practice facility of Kobe’s nearby. Flight left John Wayne airport in Orange County at about 9:08, crashed around 9:50 up in Calabasas, which is probably about a 60 mile distance northwest over LA basin as the crow flies. More than that at this point would only be speculation on my part. Overloading IMO would have impacted at the beginning of a flight, not the end, where fuel weight has been burned off. The investigation I can predict will take upwards of two years before anybody says anything official. I will predict that the pilot will be blamed, not a mechanical failure. Witnesses on the ground are being quoted that the copter was making unusual sounds like there was definitely something wrong with it right before the crash. Such statements are part of the investigation, but won’t rule out pilot error. This copter should have a version of a black box recorder, but not as sophisticated as on commercial airliners…

cal trying to knock Stanford out of first, up a basket with 3 seconds left

  27. willedav said, on January 26, 2020 at 5:00 pm

ugly turnover filled game neither team shooting very well. Stanford had ball with game tied 40 seconds left and lost in on a double team. Then fouled Paris Austin on a drive who hit both FTs to put them up 52-50.
Oh no Stanford scores at buzzer to tie it but might be too late.
Nah doesn’t count Cal (who scored 40 points entire game vs. UCLA last sunday) beats hated rivals that blew 11 point lead in second half.

Pa Salon just texted me–said it took 6 months to get paid. Man, I do not remember it taking that long but I guess it makes sense, they wanted to make sure nobody came forward to cash the ticket…..

  29. snarkk said, on January 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

I’m hearing on various outlets that Kobe’s copter circled around Glendale for a while, possibly waiting for some fog/marine layer to clear out West. Then the pilot followed the 101 out towards Calabasas. Looks like reduced visibility could be a factor…

Helicopter’s don’t go by the same rules as small planes I believe, they can fly as low as 500 ft which is insane.Counter in fog& mountains, not a good scenario for sure.FAA needs to change these situations..

    • zumiee said, on January 26, 2020 at 8:58 pm

The Stevie Ray Vaughn helicopter crash happened because the pilot flew the helicopter into the side of a hill in foggy weather.
