Un-Great
There was a moment last night, some time late in the 4th quarter, it just hit me: Jimmy isn’t great. I know what great is. Great is Joe. Great is Jerry. Great is Ronnie. Greatness happens and unfolds because it is simply better than you. And it was then that I realized this wasn’t going to happen.
I’m so spoiled by past greatness. It’s almost a curse. Say what you will about Maholmes shaky Super Bowl performance, the fact is that dude led his team to 3 comeback wins in the 2020 playoffs. THAT is greatness.
Joe would never have missed a wide open Sanders. Not in that situation.
I know Jimmy isn’t Joe and I have to stop obsessing and pining for the past. But it is just so damn sad to not have greatness on our side. Not anymore. And that is the cold reality that Niner fans get to wake up to this morning.
mmm litany of way less than great QBs that have won the big one. My Redskin buddy points out and announcers in pregame did same thing Joe Gibbs won 3 with oddball QBs. The G wasn’t the guy whose D got lit up.
Niners had great season but still say it was tale of 2 completely different halves. First half they blitzed everyone in front of them, 8-0. As comp got tougher cracks started to show particularly vs. mobile QBs. Mahomes yesterday, I was thinking up to last 6 minutes, had been outfoxed by Saleh and wasn’t even as good as Russell Wilson. And he changed that in a big hurry as he did so often all year long by exploding bombs on any defense and running away from pressure. Chiefs outgained SF on ground too, despite Samuel’s yardage.
KC was fun to watch all year, and ultimately didn’t disappoint their fans…unlike Niners.
Joe: great
Steve: great
Kap: not great
Jimmy: not great
G’s pocket presence is just odd sometimes. He doesn’t recognize pressure soon enough to throw ball away when what he’s looking for downfield isn’t there. And yes Flav he did miss sure TD and scored 0 points in 4th Q in close game.
When M got the ball in 4th and had wide open guys downfield he didn’t miss them
only question remaining this winter is when the blog is going to get to 2 million hits.
Both our SB losses had epic defensive fails as well. It ain’t all on the QBs. Those 2 deep passes were wounded ducks that should have been defended.
of course. And if Jimmy completes that pass to Sanders they’re still giving the ball back to Maholmes with 1:30 left and 3 time outs. But my point, and this isn’t really even debatable, is that Jimmy isn’t great….
agree Big Guy but I’d add “yet.” he only played 3 games for SF in 2018, and 5 before that as starting QB after they got him in 2017. plus handful as Brady’s back up for 2 yrs. More experience, we’ll see.
the thing that bugged me about end of first half stall it out take my timeouts into locker room nonsense is that SF had just scored on previous possession. they went 80 yds on 7 plays and put the ball in the end zone to tie it and then the D stopped Mahomes so they could get ball back.
You have a chance, with momentum and timeouts, to use the whole middle of field and take lead. I thought game was gonna be higher scoring than it ultimately was, so ignoring the opportunity to put more points on board there bugged me. They had scored with TD pass to Us, using Mostert and Samuel and mixing up offense. then Coach backed off and said nah we’re good. pfftt.
These kinds of things add more to the legend of Walsh and his teams and their players (I include the last 2 SB wins as Walsh teams)…
yeah. And Shanny is not devoid of criticism here. The difference between him and Jimmy is that he can learn, evolve, maybe he can be a great coach. Jimmy is who he is. He might get a little better with experience. But he’s never going to be great.
Maybe never great, but I think he can be a very good QB, and with the talent around him, I believe the team can win a super bowl with him.
Fair point I suppose. He took pretty big steps this year but obviously needs to keep improving. The potential for greatness is still there and the jury is still out on Garoppolo for me.
Going into the game I thought it would come down to whichever coach blew it with clock management. Reid has a poor history in that regard so I expected it to be on the KC side but Shanahan’s closing of the first half was inexplicable. SF could have had 3 there and then receiving to start the 2nd half they had the opportunity to put the game out of reach. Then the 4th quarter collapse when just one or two first downs probably ices the game! I’m not one to pin the Alanta SB on him because he wasn’t the head coach but against KC, bottom line, Shanahan shit the bed imo.
We’ll see. But this was Garoppolo’s first full season as a QB. Shanny can learn and evolve? This is 2 straight fails for him in the big one.
The move that Shanny pulled at the end of the 1st half is the same move that got Mariucci fired against TB. Walsh would have hit the gas.
Everyone wears this.
Think SF wins with Alex Smith in is prime?
Smith had a prime?
lol
Smith’s best shot was in 2011 the Giants debacle when Kyle Williams fucked up 2 punts.
Smith had a prime?
Only in the eyes of Twin who worshiped Alex like he was the best QB in 49er history!
Great QB’s don’t go 1-9 throwing the ball down the stretch in a SB game.Jimmy G May not have what it takes to win the big one.But hey it’s just not him they’re is plenty of blame to go around.Shannys running scared before halftime with a 49 era stop and a possible 1:49 left on the clock and he’s in knell down move, fuck that! ,and the ball to start the second half too, inexcusable, think the Chiefs would of done that if it was reversed?
And yeah the defense let down too, and don’t forget about cocky Richard Sherman ,who looked old and slow getting beat twice on big gains and having to stfu on his greatness like a church mouse..
Think they also went into “Dusty Baker” mode to fast also when they picked off Mahomes for the second time, and the whole team sprinted to the endzone for they’re stupid victory in the bag pose, which only motivated the Chiefs more to comeback..
I was thinking the same thing on that Kat. There was tons of time left and they’re posing in the EZ after a pick? Weak…
Every team does that shit every time now.
If I were Niner fan I’d be steamed over Williams’ blown TD call and the helmet to helmet hit on JG that the announcers didn’t say a word about even during the slo-mo replay…
I say go out and win and not whine…we f’n choked.
Niners were at midfield with 1 1/2 minutes to go and 2 time outs. Shanny calls 4 straight passes all no good, game over. That third down bomb overthrow to Sanders— even if that hits for a TD, that leaves Mahomes tons of time to come back. Should have taken the 3rd down and the 4th to get chunks for the next first down. Plenty of time. Shanny has a pretty good sample size now that shows he has a problem with game management at crunch time. How that can be fixed, IDK…
First, congrats to the Chiefs, and Loo (and others pulling for the Chiefs). They deserve to be champs. I am not saying this because I am a Niner fan, but I still think, across the board, that the Niners are a better team. They just did not execute when they needed to yesterday. Again, not taking anything away from the Chiefs. I hope that there is a rematch in next year’s super bowl. Long shot, but I hope.
Jimmy is not great. But, I think he will be a very good QB, and with the right talent around him, I think he can win a super bowl. Time will tell how good Jimmy G is…he has some areas in which to improve, that is for sure.
Under the current leadership of Lynch and Shanihan, they went 6-10, 4-12 and now 13-3. I like the direction. Going into this year, I was thinking maybe 8 or 9 wins, and possibly, a wild card. This game exceeded my expectations, big time, and I think the Niners will be back in the hunt next year.
Agree with snarkk’s comment about Shanny and game management. Not sure what the answer is there.
The misdirection runs worked to a T in the 1st half. KC never stopped them. We stopped running them.
I’m just too livid to still get over. Well said about Garoppofail. I did not like they deferred after coin toss but got a good stop but then hated the gimmicky play calls on the first drive. Bill Walsh did not have to rely on gimmicks. They scripted out the first 10 plays or so and then executed. I wanted to see that on the first drive. Hated the tuck your tail between your legs first half. Hate Niner fan friends who complained about the call on Kittle…that is a penalty as is the pass interference. Dont fucking whine about it or the hits Garoppofail took. Just go out and execute and win the damn game. Hated the 3rd and 10 call and then not taking a time out to map out an absolute must-have 4th and 10.
First Super Bowl we ever blew a lead and will take a long time to get over…still not quite over the 2002 Giants blown Series..
The pitches to Samuel are hardly ‘trick’ plays. Yeah, how stupid to get 15-20 yard rushes. They worked. The Niners were fucking stupid to STOP running those plays. They were stupid to stop running period. The Niners have been making huge gains on misdirection runs all year.
I’d say 80% of the teams prefer to play defense first. So they defer. Both the Harbaughs were some of the guys that went all-in on that. I’d say it works most of the time because first drives usually don’t get points. Shanny’s fail was running the clock out to close the half.
I get tired of people endlessly sucking Walsh’s dead dick.
Walsh was an offensive genius…there really is no argument. Should have just kept running simple plays and try and pound them the first drive. Gimmicks are fine spread out in a game not all in one drive
Garropofail just does not have HERO written over him…he had the moment of glory with a receiver open to get him the ball. Mahomes would have made that throw.
The ref seemed confused by the coin flip and now I am too. What does it mean when you defer?
You let the other team decide what to do or you choose to kick off?
The 9ers deferred and the ref kept asking KC if they want the ball.
WTF???
Agree…that was confusing as hell. I thought in deferring, the Niners were saying we’ll kick the ball.
#Metoo, Chi. So why doesn’t the team that wins the toss just say we’ll kick or receive?
Agree. And congrats on your Chiefs being Super Bowl champs.
Thanks, Chi.
Long time coming. Now there’s dynasty talk!
I quit on them at some point in all 3 post season games…
I still can’t believe stiffs like Brad Johnson &Trent Dilfer quarterbacked teams to a SB win!
Not to mention Flacco. Fuck.
It’s back to baseball!
Guyer’s 34 with no pop and hasn’t played at the MLB level since 2018. F Zaidi!
From Wiki: His knack for getting hit by pitches has earned the nickname, “La Piñata.”
Yeah that’s just fucking great Z!Add a 34 year old scrub with a nickname La piñata who’s only hits are when he gets hit!!!
As I alluded to yesterday, and Dirt said today, Shanahan shit the bed. He runs the show and he’s to blame. He fucked up at the end of the half. We all saw that. He got conservative or as he said, he felt “really good at 10-10.”
What’s worse is that he doubled down on being conservative on the first drive of the second half. Shanahan was facing a fourth-and-2 from the Kansas City 24-yard line, and numb nuts chose to send out Gould to kick a 42-yard field goal. The Niner offense was averaging 7.6 yards per play at the time and had yet to punt in the game. I forgot where I read this (ESPN?), but this decision to kick the field goal dropped the 49ers’ win expectancy by 5%.
Related to the aforementioned, in the fourth quarter, the 49ers had a chance to ice the game. Their run game was operating on all 8 cylinders, but instead of using their strength and playing the clock, son of rat face passed on consecutive plays after a five-yard rush; neither pass was completed, giving the Chiefs plenty of time to take the lead.
Pfffttt!
Garoppolo is just a guy, but in my mind, he’s not to blame because he doesn’t call the plays. At best, he’s a “game manager,” but Shanahan decided to put the game in his hands. The fact that Garoppolo is just a guy exacerbated the situation in two ways – selecting more pass plays that number 1, didn’t work; and, 2. kept our defense on the field longer, thus exhausting them out in the key 4th quarter. I mean come on – how do you lose a game 20-10 in the 4th quartter, when that quarter is nearly half over? Unfuckingbelievable.
Son of rat face, haha.
Agree for the most part. I would categorize Garopolla above the Smith’s of the league with a lot of room to improve. It’s not like the 49er receiving corps is top shelf at the moment. Do you think the Chiefs receivers get under that ball that was overthrown to Sanders?
I saw a headline some where that pretty much sums it up in my mind-“Kyle Shanahan Coached Like the Old Andy Reid, So the New Andy Reid Won”
Jimmy G. has movie star good lucks, and I wonder how much that influences what we expect from him. He looks great in photos, so we expect him to also be a great player. What if he looked like a plain ol’ guy? We’d probably have more realistic expectations of what he is.
Maybe he will achieve greatness someday, but he’s got to keep improving.
This is funny . . .

But Trump could solve the problem by doing this . . .

.
Yeah, their huge history of 14 games in 60 years is one for the ages. 7-7.
Stick to your day job of drinking at Club Mallard.
21 straight points@Go Time and a Super Bowl win IS domination. The Chiefs won the only game that matters; the Super Bowl. There’ the “one for the ages.”
I know this may be a challenge for you blowm…but go blow yourself, asswhipe.
Did you hit any of your prop bets, Flav?
No. Lol. But I made back about half what I spent on them hitting the under on the first half so it wasn’t a total loss. Almost all of those prop bets were big odds so it’s not a huge surprise I whiffed on them
No idea how this makes the Dodgers a better team. Yeah, I know that in 2019, the Dodgers led the Major Leagues in ERA (3.37), WHIP (1.10), lowest walks per nine innings (2.44), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.88) and lowest on-base percentage (.282), slugging percentage (.379) and OPS (.661) against . . . but wasn’t pitching again their Achilles heel? Isn’t that what they need most? Not only starters, but a closer too?
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Yeah, I’m not buying into that either. It sure feels like the LA window shut last year but the div is anyone’s to win. Hey Buster, long time.
Pretty good creativity by the Chiefs on they’re first TD , going all complete spin like the 4 Tops in they’re backfield before a direct snap to the RB Williams that confused the Niners Defense that stopped him just short of the endzone. But gave them a 1st down and they scored 2 plays later.Oh btw that was a 4th down play, Reid goes for it,Shanny kicks a FG on 4th and 2!! Reid shows Shanny who really has the brass balls in the SB!!
yep. It’s almost like Reid went through a Bochy like transformation in his approach from his first attempt at winning a championship. He definitely pushed all his cheeseburgers in.
Kittle was open all game, Jimmy for some reason rarely went to him. Jimmy choked multiple times yesterday with the worst choke being the post shot he had gift wrapped only to overthrow him by a mile
I mostly agree with this guy. Shanny wasn’t great but Grappy was the true dunce last night
Meh. 9ers D gave the lead. Period.
I don’t know, but Samuels had some big runs early and they went away from him and the run completely. 2nd and 5 was 2 tipped balls at the line. Bourne was open as well a few plays. Garoppolo looked skittish all game. I don’t know, maybe the moment was too big for him. Like I said, this is his first full year as a starter. He has learning to do. Especially pocket awareness.
But running the ball with a lead, esp when you got 5 on 1st down, means you try it once more at least. Shanny got in big trouble in Atl by going too pass-happy down the stretch and it backfired. He did the same fuckoing thing last night. He panicked and tried too hard for the big play. 3rd and 10 bomb? Stupid. Too high risk. They were at mid-field. You try that on 1st or 2nd down, not when they are teeing off with the rush. Mostert got 17 yards to start the drive. And why the fuck wasn’t Mostert starting? No Breida was odd as well as KC had problems with edge runs.
Terrible calls. Mid-field, 1:30 left, you chip away.
you’re only saying that because you know the outcome. He had a wide open Sanders FOR THE WIN. He fucking blew the pass. But the play call was there for the taking.
Bullshit. Running on the edge was working all 1st half. The misdirection runs with Deebo were working as well. They didn’t stop the run game. WE stopped running.
For all the shit Garoppolo gets, he was 17-22 for 250 halfway through the 3rd quarter. I’ll even give him a break on the 1st pick as he was trying to get it OB. Yeah, he needs better pocket presence. Yeah he went 2-9 on the last 2 drives. But Shanny abandoning the run was the same problem he had last time.
Who’s to say KC doesn’t drive on us anyway? Giving them 1:20 if they hit that bomb doesn’t win the game.
well the goal is to take the lead, you can’t worry about what KC *might* have done with the ball. If he hits that pass you’re celebrating wildly. He fucking blew it.
Exactly why wasn’t Mosert not starting?
Probably because Shanny had a bromance moment with him when they were both in Atlanta and felt obligated even coming off an injury which makes no sense. And did Andy Reid give a shit about feelings when he deactivated McCoy for the game?NO, he knew even if he use to be great that’s he’s a fumble machine!
And yeah where was Brieda? Besides Tyreek Hill is one of the fastest players in football, and could of easily broken a long run against the Chiefs suspect D..
I pretty much agree with you, it’s a joke that Mostert didn’t get a carry till 9 min left in 2nd quarter. But, Shanny has stayed consistent with this in starting Coleman. He starts every game this wasn’t anything new he was doing in the SB
Simms is full of shit. They could of kept feeding Deebo Samuels ( who was the best player on the field last night) with a jet sweep play the Chiefs couldn’t stop all night, are a roll out option to Juice( the other non dud of the evening) would of been effective, with no defender able to deflect the ball..
Same thing happened to Jimmy G in the Baltimore game, having passes deflected with the game on the line late…
Who’s Ronnie?
Happy for ya, Loo. Congratulations.
Thanks a Lott, Pawlie…
You’re welcome. And thanks for the answer to my query. Natch.
Right. Shanny got caught up in the throw or die mentality. Just like Atl. Look, I think he’s a great offensive mind, but he has a lot of learning to do. Under his watch, he’s been outscored 40-0 in the 4th quarter in 2 Super Bowls.
I just had a feeling that it was gonna slip away ffrom us. A fellow Niners here, from Santa Rosa, texted me he wouldn’t be comfortable unless we were up 40 points. The odd thing is, it happened so fast, it’s a blur to me. I can’t even recall what happened, how the Chiefs did it. Maybe old age.
I’m sure I don’t remember a lot of the little details of our 3 in 5.
Not to mention the major one the other day…
At least there is one good fan
.
Why can’t I post links?
Don’t know. Mentally challenged? Seems to have worked but how bout you just post your shit once and then I don’t have to go fix it, ok?
I didn’t see anything post at all. l’ve never trolled the flap & still haven’t but right on. It’s your blog. You’re killin me. I won’t try posting in future.
you’ve never trolled the flap? That fucking video is a troll post. Did you forget you posted that already? Add memory loss to the mentally challenged part. Look, you’re a fucking Dodger fan, you not posting here doesn’t move the needle for me one fuck. But you are free to post here. Your call, see ya later or not.
That’s right, I’ve never trolled this blog & your reading skills need some work, fella. That video was posted & answered by 9er fans. Late.
I remember this guy being a certified Koufax killer…
Has Shanny really been outscored 40-0 in the 4th Q of Super Bowls?
Still say the biggest hero of Chiefs season was the guy who popped Mahomes’ knee back into place on the field.
And I don’t even know his name…
Without the personal interest, it wasn’t a particularly entertaining game, was it?
I didn’t watch the halftime show but a lot of talk about it being “inappropriate.”
I kind of doubt that. Even 12 year olds are probably desensitized by now…
One of the columns in Chron today mentioned the ads. One of the better ones was “Groundhog Day” I thought, tho I doubt Shanahan want’s to hear that phrase much. or the redundant deja vu all over again.
Hammer was pretty good one too and the hands off Cheetos guy.
For all us old farts the Google one (guy remembering wife’s favs) struck a nerve.
Halftime was mute time.
Congrats Loo, Hey 50 years is a longtime between Championships!
As far as the MVP, I just can’t go with Mahomes, but all his hype gets him the award!
The real MVP was Damien Williams in my book.104 yards rushing and the final nail in the coffin ⚰️ run of 38 yards sealed it for me.
And then to run off the field(while his teammates were all on the field celebrating)and chase down Rasheem Mostert in the tunnel and ask to exchange jerseys shows a lot of CLASS in my book!!
And both these guys went undrafted to start they’re careers, even more impressive!!
Completely agree, Kat. Sammy Watkins was also excellent.
Mahomes was just not himself for most of the game…
Flav, if you look at the Atlanta super bowl NE scored 31 unanswered points from late in the 3rd quarter to OT. KC scored 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter.
That’s 51-0 on Shanny’s watch. Jimmy G isn’t the only one on a learning curve.
Oooops Can’t edit on my phone. Should read 52.
