I haven’t seen the deal yet. The details don’t matter. Signing Hunter Pence is the dumbest signing I can remember the Giants making in the last 20 years. Maybe ever.

Pence’s batted ball profile changed pretty nicely in 2019 following the swing changes he implemented. His hard hit rate (42.5%) was the highest of his career, and he saw a healthy decline in his GB% with a corresponding increase in his FB% last season…
I have doubts he can play much outfield, but he would just be a cheap vet that can be easily jettisoned, if needed.
Z is hoping the young players will nail down spots, but the cheap vets are just a cheap insurance policy of sorts.
Kat’s line about Puig being weird entertainment made me laugh. Puig would be that, definitely.

Pence signed a 1 year / $2,000,000 contract with the Texas Rangers last season. If he signs with the Giants, he will sign for that – maybe less, maybe more. More important, he wont be starting. He’s only more depth. Or, as one site said, “Think of Pence as an outfielder who can shoot the gaps when Dickerson goes down or Yaz and Davis are ineffective or Austin Slater doesn’t provide enough power. 75-85 games of Pence couldn’t hurt.”
They are so cheap Blade it’s ridiculous.
Yeah I get with the core contracts and Cueto&Shark their screwed, but they are under the luxury cap right?
If you add a Puig at 8-10 mil your still ok with the cap and you have a Outfield I could get excited with Yaz LF Davis CF Puig RF with your backups of the injured trio of Duggar,Dickson & Slater.
No reason at all to have Pence at 37 being a rah rah on the bench, he can’t play the OF anymore, and I believe 2nd base is covered now..

After clearing out our closer, a good backup catcher, a relatively good offensive/defensive outfielder and the probable #2 starter it seems like it’s starting from some god-forsaken square minus one. So, if it’s going to be a lot of wide-eyed, gut wrenching youth for the most part learning the ropes, I’m for Pence and Panda to be on the bench to at least bring some confidence to the bunch; to bring some of the leadership, pump them up, bring some fun to the game which will be difficult as they know and see the position they are in. There is no one IMO left on the team that has the personality to help in this way which I have always called the ‘chemistry of winning’. And if they can contribute by bringing in some of their past performance… a bonus….
Can’t WAIT to see more Instagram and twitter posts from Pence and his wife. And I bet the facebook wives have cleared every store of all their available Saran Wrap.

AK, I think the primary reason that you bring back dudes like Pence or Panda is to mollify or appease the fan base (or what you guys derisively refer to as the Facebook housewives). Personally, I could give 2 shits. We all knew this team was going to suck regardless of whom they signed this season. A Mike Trout wouldn’t get this team past the smell test. Are we all straight on that? It seems not. Anywho. Pence is a low cost rah rah type, who showed he can still hit (last season) and I have no problem with him being on the team. My main concern right now is and will always be the farm system. Ownership has made it clear by their inaction, that they are not getting rid of the 4 bore core or whatever they’re called, so this is what Z has to work with.
Personally, I find all of this fascinating after 5-6 years of fruitless “reloading.”
Z, Harris, Kapler, all of them have no sentimental attachment to any of the current Giants roster. I think the comfort zone that the Bore Core was living in is going to be encroached upon. They won’t be cut, but their playing time could be highly diminished as the season goes on.

Of all the inexpensive veterans that they could sign to fill out a roster rebuild, I don’t like the Panda and Pence signings one bit. This is either a sign of weakness on Zadi’s part or Baer forced his hand. Maybe a bit of both. It’s such obvious pandering to the Facebook housewives. It’s just feels like this organization is hell bent on keeping some connection to the 3 in 5, when quite frankly that feels like an eternity ago.
I have high hopes for Zadi, but between the Kapler hiring and these two moves, he’s really beginning to make me question his game plan.
It just doesn’t matter who they sign. Pence and Panda are pacifiers to appease the casual fans it seems like. That being said, Pillar was the biggest fan fave. And they didn’t sign him. I guess they can wait him out and see if they can get him on the cheap.
